2 Samuel 11
1 Et au retour de l'année, à l'époque où les Rois ouvraient la campagne, David envoya Joab et avec lui ses serviteurs et tout Israël; et ils ravagèrent le pays des Ammonites et mirent le siège devant Rabba.
And it came to pass at the return of the year, at the time when kings go forth to war, that David sent Joab and his servants with him, and all Israel, and they spoiled the children of Ammon, and besieged Rabba: but David remained in Jerusalem.
2 Mais David resta à Jérusalem. Et il advint que dans la soirée David s'étant levé de son lit de repos, se promenait sur le toit de la demeure royale; et de cette terrasse il aperçut une femme au bain; et cette femme, de figure, était belle au plus haut point.
In the mean time it happened that David arose from his bed after noon, and walked upon the roof of the king’s house: and he saw from the roof of his house a woman washing herself, over against him: and the woman was very beautiful.
3 Et David envoya demander qui était cette femme, et on dit: Mais, c'est Bathséba, fille d'Eliam, femme d'Urie, le Héthien.
And the king sent, and inquired who the woman was. And it was told him, that she was Bethsabee the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Urias the Hethite.
4 Et David dépêcha des émissaires chargés de l'emmener; et elle entra chez lui, et il habita avec elle; puis, elle accomplit la pratique sainte pour secouer sa souillure, et elle s'en retourna dans sa maison.
And David sent messengers, and took her, and she came in to him, and he slept with her: and presently she was purified from her uncleanness:
5 Et elle se trouva enceinte, et elle en fit informer David en ces termes: Je suis enceinte.
And she returned to her house having conceived. And she sent and told David, and said: I have conceived.
6 Alors David fit dire à Joab: Envoie-moi Urie, le Héthien. Et Joab envoya Urie à David.
And David sent to Joab, saying: Send me Urias the Hethite. And Joab sent Urias to David.
7 Et Urie étant arrivé chez lui, David le questionna sur l'état de Joab, et sur l'état de l'armée, et sur l'état des opérations.
And Urias came to David. And David asked how Joab did, and the people, and how the war was carried on.
8 Et David dit à Urie: Descends chez toi et te baigne les pieds. Et Urie sortit du palais du Roi, et il fut suivi d'un don du Roi.
And David said to Urias: Go into thy house, and wash thy feet. And Urias went out from the king’s house, and there went out after him a mess of meat from the king.
9 Mais Urie se coucha à la porte du palais du Roi avec tous les serviteurs de son maître, et ne descendit point à son logis.
But Urias slept before the gate of the king’s house, with the other servants of his lord, and went not down to his own house.
10 Et l'on informa David en ces termes: Urie n'est point descendu chez lui. Et David dit à Urie: N'arrives-tu pas de voyage? Pourquoi n'es-tu pas descendu chez toi?
And it was told David by some that said: Urias went not to his house. And David said to Urias: Didst thou not come from thy journey? why didst thou not go down to thy house?
11 Et Urie dit à David: L'Arche et Israël et Juda logent dans des huttes, et mon seigneur Joab et les serviteurs de mon seigneur campent sur le sol; et moi, j'entrerais dans ma maison pour manger et boire et coucher aux côtés de ma femme! Par ta vie et la vie de ton âme! non, je n'en ferai rien.
And Urias said to David: The ark of God and Israel and Juda dwell in tents, and my lord Joab and the servants of my lord abide upon the face of the earth: and shall I go into my house, to eat and to drink, and to sleep with my wife? By thy welfare and by the welfare of thy soul I will not do this thing.
12 Et David dit à Urie: Reste ici encore aujourd'hui, et demain je te congédierai. Urie resta donc à Jérusalem ce jour-là et le suivant.
Then David said to Urias: Tarry here today, and tomorrow I will send thee away. Urias tarried in Jerusalem that day and the next.
13 Et David le convia; et il mangea devant lui et but; et David l'enivra. Mais le soir il sortit pour se coucher sur son lit à côté des serviteurs de son maître, et il ne descendit point dans sa maison.
And David called him to eat and to drink before him, and he made him drunk: and he went out in the evening, and slept on his couch with the servants of his lord, and went not down into his house.
14 Et le lendemain, David écrivit à Joab une lettre qu'il lui expédia par Urie.
And when the morning was come, David wrote a letter to Joab: and sent it by the hand of Urias,
15 Et dans cette lettre il marquait: Exposez Urie au plus fort de la mêlée, puis retirez-vous de ses côtés, pour qu'il soit atteint et meure.
Writing in the letter: Set ye Urias in the front of the battle, where the fight is strongest: and leave ye him, that he may be wounded and die.
16 Et comme Joab faisait le siège de la ville, il plaça Urie à l'endroit où il savait qu'il y avait des braves.
Wherefore as Joab was besieging the city, he put Urias in the place where he knew the bravest men were.
17 Et les hommes de la ville firent une sortie et en vinrent aux prises avec Joab, et la troupe, les serviteurs de David, eurent des hommes tués, et Urie, le Héthien, fut aussi du nombre des morts.
And the men coming out of the city, fought against Joab, and there fell some of the people of the servants of David, and Urias the Hethite was killed also.
18 Là-dessus Joab envoya à David un rapport de toutes les circonstances de l'affaire.
Then Joab sent, and told David all things concerning the battle.
19 Et il donna au messager cette instruction: Quand tu auras fini de raconter au Roi tous les détails de l'engagement,
And he charged the messenger, saying: When thou hast told all the words of the battle to the king,
20 si la colère monte au Roi et qu'il te dise: Pourquoi vous approcher de la ville pour une attaque? ne saviez-vous pas qu'ils tireraient du haut de la muraille?
If thou see him to be angry, and he shall say: Why did you approach so near to the wall to fight? knew you not that many darts are thrown from above off the wall?
21 Qui a abattu Abimélech, fils de Jérubbéseth? n'est-ce pas une femme qui du haut du mur lui a lancé un fragment de meule, et il en est mort à Thébets? pourquoi vous approcher de la muraille? — alors dis-lui: Ton serviteur Urie, le Héthien, est mort aussi.
Who killed Abimelech the son of Jerobaal? did not a woman cast a piece of a millstone upon him from the wall, and slew him in Thebes? Why did you go near the wall? Thou shalt say: Thy servant Urias the Hethite is also slain.
22 Le courrier partit, et arrivé il redit à David tout ce dont Joab l'avait chargé.
So the messenger departed, and came and told David all that Joab had commanded him.
23 Et le messager dit à David: Comme les gens de la ville nous avaient fortement attaqués et avaient dirigé contre nous une sortie dans les champs, nous les avons refoulés jusqu'à l'abord de la porte,
And the messenger said to David: The men prevailed against us, and they came out to us into the field: and we vigorously charged and pursued them even to the gate of the city.
24 c'est alors que du haut du mur les archers ont tiré sur tes serviteurs et que plusieurs des serviteurs du Roi ont péri, et ton serviteur Urie, le Héthien, a aussi succombé.
And the archers shot their arrows at thy servants from off the wall above: and some of the king’s servants are slain, and thy servant Urias the Hethite is also dead.
25 Alors David dit au messager: Voici ce que tu as à dire à Joab: Ne sois point peiné de cette affaire! car par-ci, par-là l'épée tranche: pousse avec vigueur l'assaut de la place et la rase! — Et encourage-le!
And David said to the messenger: Thus shalt thou say to Joab: Let not this thing discourage thee: for various is the event of war: and sometimes one, sometimes another is consumed by the sword: encourage thy warriors against The city, and exhort them that thou mayest overthrow it.
26 Et la femme d'Urie apprenant la mort d'Urie, son mari, prit le deuil pour son seigneur.
And the wife of Urias heard that Urias her husband was dead, and she mourned for him.
27 Et à l'expiration du deuil, David la fit chercher et l'introduisit dans sa maison, et elle devint sa femme et lui enfanta un fils. Mais l'action que David avait faite, déplut à l'Éternel.
And the mourning being over, David sent and brought her into his house, and she became his wife, and she bore him a son: and this thing which David had done, was displeasing to the Lord.
