1 Et une femme d'entre les épouses des fils des prophètes jeta son cri à Elisée en disant: Ton serviteur, mon mari, est mort; et tu sais que ton serviteur était craignant l'Éternel; or le créancier s'est présenté pour prendre mes deux enfants et les avoir comme ses esclaves.

Now there cried a certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets to Elisha, saying, Thy servant my husband is dead; and thou knowest that thy servant feared the LORD: and the creditor hath come to take to him my two sons to be bond-men.

2 Et Elisée lui dit: Que faut-il que je fasse pour toi? Dis-moi ce que tu as au logis! Et elle lui dit: Ta servante n'a rien au logis sinon une fiole d'huile.

And Elisha said to her, What shall I do for thee? tell me, what hast thou in the house? And she said, Thy handmaid hath not any thing in the house, save a pot of oil.

3 Et il dit: Va et emprunte pour toi au dehors des vases à tous tes voisins, des vases vides, et pas en petit nombre.

Then he said, Go, borrow thee vessels abroad of all thy neighbors, [even] empty vessels; borrow not a few.

4 Puis, rentrée, ferme la porte sur toi et tes fils et verse dans tous ces vases, et mets de côté ce qui sera plein.

And when thou hast come in, thou shalt shut the door upon thee and upon thy sons, and shalt pour out into all those vessels, and thou shalt set aside that which is full.

5 Alors elle le quitta; et elle ferma la porte sur elle et sur ses fils; ceux-ci lui tendaient les vases, et elle versait;

So she went from him, and shut the door upon her and upon her sons, who brought [the vessels] to her; and she poured out.

6 et lorsque les vases furent pleins, elle dit à son fils: Tends-moi encore un vase! Et il lui dit: Il n'y a plus de vases. Alors l'huile s'arrêta.

And it came to pass, when the vessels were full, that she said to her son, Bring me yet a vessel. And he said to her, [There is] not a vessel more. And the oil stayed.

7 Et elle vint raconter à l'homme de Dieu, qui lui dit: Va, vends l'huile et paye ta dette, et toi et tes fils vivez du surplus.

Then she came and told the man of God. And he said, Go, sell the oil, and pay thy debt, and live thou and thy children on the remainder.

8 Et il advint alors que Elisée passa à Sunem; et il y avait là une femme notable qui l'obligea à prendre son repas [chez elle]. Et toutes les fois qu'il passait, il entrait là pour prendre son repas.

And it fell on a day, that Elisha passed to Shunem, where [was] a distinguished woman; and she constrained him to eat bread. And [so] it was, [that] as oft as he passed by, he turned in thither to eat bread.

9 Et elle dit à son mari: Vois-tu! eh bien! je sens que c'est un saint homme de Dieu qui passe chez nous constamment;

And she said to her husband, Behold now, I perceive that this [is] a holy man of God, who passeth by us continually.

10 faisons-lui donc à l'étage une petite chambre en maçonnerie, et plaçons-y pour lui un lit et une table et un siège et un flambeau pour qu'il y loge quand il viendra chez nous.

Let us make a little chamber, I pray thee, on the wall; and let us set for him there a bed, and a table, and a stool, and a candlestick: and it shall be, when he cometh to us, that he shall turn in thither.

11 Et il arriva alors qu'étant venu là il logea dans la chambre de l'étage et y coucha.

And it fell on a day, that he came thither, and he turned into the chamber, and lay there.

12 Et il dit à Gehazi, son valet: Appelle cette Sunamite. Et il l'appela et elle se présenta à lui.

And he said to Gehazi his servant, Call this Shunamite. And when he had called her, she stood before him.

13 Et il lui dit: Eh bien! dis-lui: Voici, tu t'es agitée pour nous de toute cette sollicitude: que puis-je faire pour toi? Y-a-t-il à parler pour toi au roi ou au général de l'armée? Et elle dit: Je reste au milieu de ma Tribu!

And he said to him, Say now to her, Behold, thou hast been careful for us with all this care; what [is] to be done for thee? wouldst thou be spoken for to the king, or to the captain of the host? And she answered, I dwell among my own people.

14 Et il dit: Que puis-je donc faire pour elle? Et Gehazi dit: Mais! elle n'a pas de fils et son mari est vieux. Et il dit: Appelle-la.

And he said, What then [is] to be done for her? And Gehazi answered, Verily she hath no child, and her husband is old.

15 Et il l'appela, et elle se présenta à la porte.

And he said, Call her. And when he had called her, she stood in the door.

16 Et il dit: A cette époque l'année prochaine tu embrasseras un fils. Et elle dit: Oh! non! mon Seigneur! Homme de Dieu! Ne trompe pas ta servante!

And he said, About this season, according to the time of life, thou shalt embrace a son. And she said, No, my lord, [thou] man of God, do not lie to thy handmaid.

17 Et cette femme devint enceinte et elle enfanta un fils à la même époque, l'année révolue, comme lui avait dit Elisée.

And the woman conceived, and bore a son at that season that Elisha had said to her, according to the time of life.

18 Et l'enfant ayant grandi, il arriva alors qu'il sortit pour joindre son père auprès des moissonneurs.

And when the child was grown, it happened on a day, that he went out to his father to the reapers.

19 Là il dit à son père: Ma tête! Ma tête! Et celui-ci dit au valet: Porte-le à sa mère. Et il le porta et l'amena à sa mère.

And he said to his father, My head, my head. And he said to a lad, Carry him to his mother.

20 Et l'enfant resta sur ses genoux jusqu'à midi, puis il mourut.

And when he had taken him, and brought him to his mother, he sat on her knees till noon, and [then] died.

21 Et elle monta et le déposa sur le lit de l'homme de Dieu, puis ferma sur lui et sortit.

And she went up, and laid him on the bed of the man of God, and shut [the door] upon him, and went out.

22 Et s'adressant à son mari elle dit: Envoie-moi donc un des valets et une des ânesses, et je vais courir chez l'homme de Dieu, puis revenir.

And she called to her husband, and said, Send me, I pray thee, one of the young men, and one of the asses, that I may run to the man of God, and come again.

23 Et il dit: Pourquoi vas-tu chez lui aujourd'hui? ce n'est ni lune nouvelle, ni sabbat. Et elle dit: Laisse-moi faire!

And he said, Why wilt thou go to him to-day? [it is] neither new-moon, nor sabbath. And she said, [It shall be] well.

24 Et elle sella l'ânesse et dit à son valet: Mène et va sans m'arrêter dans la course, que je ne te le dise!

Then she saddled an ass, and said to her servant, Drive, and go forward; slack not [thy] riding for me, except I bid thee.

25 Et étant partie elle arriva chez l'homme de Dieu au mont Carmel. Et lorsque l'homme de Dieu la vit de loin, il dit à Gehazi, son valet: Voici cette Sunamite!

So she went and came to the man of God to mount Carmel. And it came to pass, when the man of God saw her afar off, that he said to Gehazi his servant, Behold, [yonder is] that Shunamite:

26 Maintenant cours donc à sa rencontre et lui dis: Tout va-t-il bien pour toi, bien pour ton mari, bien pour l'enfant? Et elle dit: Bien.

Run now, I pray thee, to meet her, and say to her, [Is it] well with thee? [Is it] well with thy husband? [Is it] well with the child? and she answered, [It is] well.

27 Et elle arriva chez l'homme de Dieu à la montagne, et elle embrassa ses pieds. Alors Gehazi s'approcha pour la repousser, mais l'homme de Dieu dit: Laisse-la faire! car elle a dans l'âme une amère douleur; et l'Éternel m'en a fait un secret et ne m'a point mis au fait.

And when she came to the man of God to the hill, she caught him by the feet: but Gehazi came near to thrust her away. And the man of God said, Let her alone; for her soul [is] sorrowful within her: and the LORD hath hid [it] from me, and hath not told me?

28 Et elle dit: Est-ce que j'ai demandé un fils à mon Seigneur? N'ai-je pas dit: Ne me trompe pas?

Then she said, Did I ask a son from my lord? did I not say, Do not deceive me.

29 Et il dit à Gehazi: Ceins tes reins et prends mon bâton dans ta main et pars! Si tu rencontres quelqu'un, ne le salue point, et si quelqu'un te salue, ne lui réponds point, et tu mettras mon bâton sur la figure de l'enfant.

Then he said to Gehazi, Gird up thy loins and take my staff in thy hand, and go thy way: and if thou shalt meet any man, salute him not; and if any shall salute thee, answer him not again: and lay my staff upon the face of the child.

30 Et la mère de l'enfant dit: Par la vie de l'Éternel et par ta propre vie, je ne te quitte pas! Alors il se leva et la suivit.

And the mother of the child said, [As] the LORD liveth, and [as] thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. And he arose, and followed her.

31 Or Gehazi les avait devancés et avait posé le bâton sur la figure de l'enfant; mais pas un son, pas un signe d'attention. Et il rebroussa à leur rencontre, et il l'informa et dit: L'enfant ne s'est pas réveillé.

And Gehazi passed on before them, and laid the staff upon the face of the child; but [there was] neither voice, nor hearing. Wherefore he went again to meet him, and told him, saying, The child is not awaked.

32 Et lorsque Elisée entra dans la maison, voilà que l'enfant était mort, gisant sur son lit.

And when Elisha had come into the house, behold, the child was dead, [and] laid upon his bed.

33 Alors il entra et ferma la porte sur eux deux, et il invoqua l'Éternel.

He went in therefore, and shut the door upon them both, and prayed to the LORD.

34 Et étant monté il se coucha sur l'enfant et appliqua sa bouche sur sa bouche, et ses yeux sur ses yeux et ses mains sur ses mains, et il s'étendit sur lui de manière à réchauffer le corps de l'enfant.

And he went up, and lay upon the child, and put his mouth upon his mouth, and his eyes upon his eyes, and his hands upon his hands: and he stretched himself upon the child; and the flesh of the child became warm.

35 Et il se releva, et marcha dans la maison une fois d'un côté, une fois de l'autre; puis étant remonté il s'étendit sur lui.

Then he returned, and walked in the house to and fro; and went up, and stretched himself upon him: and the child sneezed seven times, and the child opened his eyes.

36 Alors l'enfant éternua sept fois, et l'enfant ouvrit les yeux. Et il appela Gehazi et dit: Appelle cette Sunamite! Et il l'appela et elle vint à lui et il dit: Reprends ton fils!

And he called Gehazi, and said, Call this Shunamite. So he called her. And when she had come in to him, he said, Take up thy son.

37 Alors elle vint tomber à ses pieds et s'inclina jusqu'à terre et emmena son fils et s'en alla.

Then she went in, and fell at his feet, and bowed herself to the ground, and took up her son, and went out.

38 Cependant Elisée revint à Guilgal et la famine régnait dans le pays, et les fils des prophètes demeuraient devant lui. Et il dit à son valet: Mets en place la grande marmite et fais cuire un légume pour les fils des prophètes.

And Elisha came again to Gilgal. And [there was] a dearth in the land; and the sons of the prophets [were] sitting before him: and he said to his servant, Set on the great pot, and boil pottage for the sons of the prophets.

39 Alors l'un d'eux sortit dans les champs pour cueillir de la verdure, et il trouva une sorte de vigne sauvage et il y cueillit des concombres sauvages plein son habit; et étant rentré il les coupa en morceaux dans la marmite aux légumes, car on ne savait pas ce que c'était.

And one went out into the field to gather herbs, and found a wild vine, and gathered from it wild gourds his lap full, and came and shred [them] into the pot of pottage: for they knew [them] not.

40 Et ils les en sortirent pour le repas des hommes; mais lorsqu'ils goûtèrent du légume, ils se récrièrent et dirent: La mort est dans la marmite, homme de Dieu! et ils ne pouvaient manger.

So they poured out for the men to eat. And it came to pass, as they were eating of the pottage, that they cried out, and said, O [thou] man of God, [there is] death in the pot. And they could not eat [of it].

41 Alors il dit: Mais! prenez donc de la farine! Et il en jeta dans la marmite et dit: Sers-en à ce monde! et ils en mangèrent. Et il n'y avait plus rien de nuisible dans la marmite.

But he said, Then bring meal. And he cast [it] into the pot; and he said, Pour out for the people, that they may eat. And there was no harm in the pot.

42 Or il vint un homme de Baal-Salisa et il apportait à l'homme de Dieu du pain de prémices, vingt pains d'orge et des gruaux dans sa valise. Et il dit: Donnes-en à manger à ce monde!

And there came a man from Baal-shalisha, and brought the man of God bread of the first fruits, twenty loaves of barley, and full ears of corn in its husk. And he said, Give to the people, that they may eat.

43 Et son domestique dit: Comment pourrais-je en servir à cent personnes? Et il dit: Sers-leur-en pour qu'ils en mangent; car ainsi parle l'Éternel: On en mangera et on en laissera.

And his servitor said, What, should I set this before a hundred men? He said again, Give the people, that they may eat: for thus saith the LORD, They shall eat, and shall leave [of it].

44 Alors il leur en servit et ils mangèrent, et en laissèrent selon la parole de l'Éternel.

So he set [it] before them, and they ate, and left [of it], according to the word of the LORD.
