1 Cependant Joram, fils d'Achab, devint roi d'Israël à Samarie la dix-huitième année de Josaphat, roi de Juda, et régna douze ans.

Now Jehoram the son of Ahab began to reign over Israel in Samaria in the eighteenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah, and reigned twelve years.

2 Et il fit ce qui est mal aux yeux de l'Éternel, seulement pas au même degré que son père et que sa mère, et il fit disparaître les statues de Baal qu'avait faites son père.

And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD; but not like his father, and like his mother; for he put away the pillar of Baal that his father had made.

3 Il s'adonna seulement aux péchés de Jéroboam, fils de Nebat, qui avait entraîné Israël au péché; il ne s'en départit pas.

Nevertheless he cleaved unto the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, wherewith he made Israel to sin; he departed not therefrom.

4 Or Mésa, roi de Moab, était propriétaire de troupeaux et payait au roi d'Israël un tribut de cent mille agneaux et cent mille béliers avec la toison.

Now Mesha king of Moab was a sheep-master; and he rendered unto the king of Israel the wool of a hundred thousand lambs, and of a hundred thousand rams.

5 Mais à la mort d'Achab le roi de Moab se rebella contre le roi d'Israël.

But it came to pass, when Ahab was dead, that the king of Moab rebelled against the king of Israel.

6 Et à cette occasion le roi Joram sortit de Samarie et passa en revue tous les Israélites;

And king Jehoram went out of Samaria at that time, and mustered all Israel.

7 puis il se mit en mouvement et députa vers Josaphat, roi de Juda, pour lui dire: Le roi de Moab s'est rebellé contre moi; veux-tu marcher avec moi contre Moab pour l'attaquer? Et il répondit: Je marcherai, moi comme toi, mon monde comme ton monde, mes chevaux comme tes chevaux.

And he went and sent to Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, saying: 'The king of Moab hath rebelled against me; wilt thou go with me against Moab to battle?' And he said: 'I will go up; I am as thou art, my people as thy people, my horses as thy horses.'

8 Et il dit: Quel chemin prendrons-nous? Et il répliqua: Le chemin du désert d'Edom.

And he said: 'Which way shall we go up?' And he answered: 'The way of the wilderness of Edom.'

9 Ainsi, se mirent en marche le roi d'Israël et le roi de Juda et le roi d'Edom, et après une traite de sept jours, l'eau manqua pour l'armée et le bétail qui les suivait.

So the king of Israel went, and the king of Judah, and the king of Edom; and they made a circuit of seven days' journey; and there was no water for the host, nor for the beasts that followed them.

10 Alors le roi d'Israël dit: Hélas! l'Éternel a fait appel à ces trois rois pour les mettre dans la main de Moab.

And the king of Israel said: 'Alas! for the LORD hath called these three kings together to deliver them into the hand of Moab.'

11 Et Josaphat dit: N'y a-t-il ici aucun prophète de l'Éternel pour consulter l'Éternel par son moyen? Et l'un des serviteurs du roi d'Israël répondit et dit: Il y a ici Elisée, fils de Schaphat, qui versait l'eau sur les mains d'Elie.

But Jehoshaphat said: 'Is there not here a prophet of the LORD, that we may inquire of the LORD by him?' And one of the king of Israel's servants answered and said: 'Elisha the son of Shaphat is here, who poured water on the hands of Elijah.'

12 Et Josaphat dit: La parole de l'Éternel est chez lui! Là-dessus le roi d'Israël et Josaphat et le roi d'Edom descendirent auprès de lui.

And Jehoshaphat said: 'The word of the LORD is with him.' So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat and the king of Edom went down to him.

13 Mais Elisée dit au roi d'Israël: Qu'ai-je à faire avec toi? Va aux prophètes de ton père et aux prophètes de ta mère! Et le roi d'Israël lui dit: Non! car c'est l'Éternel qui a fait appel à ces trois rois pour les mettre dans la main de Moab.

And Elisha said unto the king of Israel: 'What have I to do with thee? get thee to the prophets of thy father, and to the prophets of thy mother.' And the king of Israel said unto him: 'Nay; for the LORD hath called these three kings together to deliver them into the hand of Moab.'

14 Et Elisée dit: Par la vie de l'Éternel des armées, aux ordres de qui je suis, si je n'avais égard à Josaphat, roi de Juda, je ne te regarderais pas, je ne te verrais pas!

And Elisha said: 'As the LORD of hosts liveth, before whom I stand, surely, were it not that I regard the presence of Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, I would not look toward thee, nor see thee.

15 Eh bien! amenez-moi un joueur de luth. Et comme le joueur de luth touchait les cordes, la main de l'Éternel s'étendit sur lui

But now bring me a minstrel.' And it came to pass, when the minstrel played, that the hand of the LORD came upon him.

16 et il dit: Ainsi parle l'Éternel: Pratiquez dans ce ravin fossés et fossés.

And he said: 'Thus saith the LORD: Make this valley full of trenches.

17 Car ainsi parle l'Éternel: Vous ne verrez ni vent ni pluie, et ce ravin s'emplira d'eau, et vous vous désaltérerez, vous et vos troupeaux et votre bétail.

For thus saith the LORD: Ye shall not see wind, neither shall ye see rain, yet that valley shall be filled with water; and ye shall drink, both ye and your cattle and your beasts.

18 Mais c'est trop peu aux yeux de l'Éternel: Il mettra Moab dans votre main.

And this is but a light thing in the sight of the LORD; He will also deliver the Moabites into your hand.

19 Et vous forcerez toutes les villes fortes et toutes les villes d'élite, et vous abattrez tous les meilleurs arbres, et comblerez toutes les sources, et vous affligerez de pierres tous les champs fertiles.

And ye shall smite every fortified city, and every choice city, and shall fell every good tree, and stop all fountains of water, and mar every good piece of land with stones.'

20 Et le matin au moment de l'oblation de l'offrande, voilà que l'eau arriva du chemin d'Edom, et toute la contrée fut pleine d'eau.

And it came to pass in the morning, about the time of making the offering, that, behold, there came water by the way of Edom, and the country was filled with water.

21 Cependant lorsque tous les Moabites apprirent que les rois s'avançaient pour les attaquer, ils furent tous convoqués depuis les hommes à même de porter les armes et au-dessus, et ils se portèrent à la frontière.

Now when all the Moabites heard that the kings were come up to fight against them, they gathered themselves together, all that were able to put on armour, and upward, and stood on the border.

22 Et à leur lever le matin, quand le soleil parut sur les eaux, les Moabites virent devant eux l'eau rouge comme le sang,

And they rose up early in the morning, and the sun shone upon the water, and the Moabites saw the water some way off as red as blood;

23 et ils dirent: C'est du sang! les rois se sont détruits l'un l'autre et se sont massacrés entre eux; au pillage donc, Moabites!

and they said: 'This is blood: the kings have surely fought together, and they have smitten each man his fellow; now therefore, Moab, to the spoil.'

24 Mais lorsqu'ils arrivèrent au camp d'Israël, les Israélites se levèrent et défirent les Moabites qui s'enfuirent devant eux, et [les Israélites] pénétrèrent dans le pays et mirent Moab en déroute.

And when they came to the camp of Israel, the Israelites rose up and smote the Moabites, so that they fled before them. And they smote the land, even Moab, mightily.

25 Et ils démolirent les villes, et ils jetèrent chacun sa pierre sur tous les champs fertiles qu'ils en remplirent, et comblèrent toutes les sources et abattirent tous les meilleurs arbres, jusqu'à ne laisser que les pierres de la ville à Kir-Haréseth. Et les frondeurs l'enveloppèrent et la battirent.

And they beat down the cities; and on every good piece of land they cast every man his stone, and filled it; and they stopped all the fountains of water, and felled all the good trees; until there was left only Kir-hareseth with the stones of the wall thereof; so the slingers encompassed it, and smote it.

26 Et lorsque le roi de Moab vit que la bataille était plus forte que lui, il prit avec lui sept cents hommes tirant l'épée pour percer jusqu'au roi d'Edom; mais ils ne purent.

And when the king of Moab saw that the battle was too sore for him, he took with him seven hundred men that drew sword, to break through unto the king of Edom; but they could not.

27 Alors il prit son fils premier-né, qui devait régner en sa place, et l'immola en holocauste sur le rempart. Et il y eut une grande indignation contre les Israélites, qui partirent et regagnèrent le pays.

Then he took his eldest son that should have reigned in his stead, and offered him for a burnt-offering upon the wall. And there came great wrath upon Israel; and they departed from him, and returned to their own land.
