2 Chroniques 10
1 Et Roboam se rendit à Sichem, car à Sichem étaient venus tous les Israélites pour le faire roi.
And Rehoboam went to Shechem; for all Israel had come to Shechem to make him king.
2 Et à cette nouvelle Jéroboam, fils de Nebat, qui était en Egypte, où il avait fui loin du roi Salomon, revint de l'Egypte.
And it came to pass when Jeroboam the son of Nebat heard it (now he was in Egypt, whither he had fled from the presence of king Solomon) that Jeroboam returned out of Egypt.
3 Et par une députation ils le mandèrent, et Jéroboam arriva ainsi que tous les Israélites, et ils tinrent à Roboam ce langage:
And they sent and called him; and Jeroboam and all Israel came and spoke to Rehoboam saying,
4 Ton père a rendu lourd notre joug, maintenant allège le dur service de ton père et le joug pesant qu'il nous a imposé, et nous te serons soumis.
Thy father made our yoke grievous; and now lighten the grievous servitude of thy father, and his heavy yoke that he put upon us, and we will serve thee.
5 Et il leur dit: Encore trois jours et revenez me trouver. Et le peuple se retira.
And he said to them, Come again to me after three days. And the people departed.
6 Alors le roi Roboam se consulta avec les Anciens qui avaient été les ministres de Salomon, son père, de son vivant, et dit: Comment conseillez-vous de répondre à ce peuple-là?
And king Rehoboam consulted with the old men, who had stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, saying, How do ye advise to return answer to this people?
7 Et ils lui parlèrent en ces termes: Si tu es bon envers ce peuple, si tu lui es propice et lui parles un langage de bonté, il te sera toujours soumis.
And they spoke to him saying, If thou be kind to this people, and please them, and speak good words to them, they will be thy servants for ever.
8 Mais il négligea le conseil des Anciens qui le conseillaient, et il se consulta avec les jeunes hommes qui avaient grandi avec lui et étaient ses ministres.
But he forsook the advice of the old men which they had given him, and consulted with the young men, who had grown up with him, that stood before him.
9 Et il leur dit: Que conseillez-vous que nous répondions à ce peuple-là qui m'a tenu ce langage: Allège le joug que nous a imposé ton père?
And he said to them, What advice give ye that we may return answer to this people, who have spoken to me saying, Lighten the yoke which thy father put upon us?
10 Et les jeunes hommes qui avaient grandi avec lui, lui parlèrent en ces termes: Réponds ainsi au peuple qui t'a tenu ce langage: Ton père a rendu lourd notre joug, mais toi, allège-le-nous! parle-leur ainsi: Mon petit doigt est plus fort que les reins de mon père;
And the young men that had grown up with him spoke to him saying, Thus shalt thou say to the people who have spoken to thee saying, Thy father made our yoke heavy, and lighten thou it for us, — thus shalt thou say to them: My little [finger] is thicker than my father's loins;
11 eh bien donc! mon père vous a chargés d'un joug pesant, et moi j'ajouterai à votre joug: mon père vous a morigénés avec des étrivières, et moi j'userai de fouets à pointes.
and whereas my father laid a heavy yoke upon you, I will add to your yoke: my father chastised you with whips, but I [will chastise you] with scorpions.
12 Et lorsque Jéroboam avec tout le peuple se présenta le troisième jour à Roboam, aux termes de ce qu'avait dit le roi: Revenez me trouver dans trois jours!
And Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king had appointed saying, Come again to me on the third day.
13 le roi leur répondit durement, et le roi Roboam négligea le conseil des Anciens.
And the king answered them roughly; and king Rehoboam forsook the advice of the old men,
14 Et il leur parla suivant le conseil des jeunes et dit: Mon père a rendu lourd votre joug et moi j'y ajouterai encore; mon père vous a morigénés avec des étrivières, et moi j'userai de fouets à pointes.
and spoke to them according to the advice of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to it; my father chastised you with whips, but I [will chastise you] with scorpions.
15 Et le roi n'exauça point le peuple, car la chose tourna ainsi de par Dieu, à cet effet que l'Éternel accomplît sa parole qu'il avait dite par l'organe d'Ahia, le Silonite, à Jéroboam, fils de Nebat.
So the king hearkened not to the people; for it was brought about by God, that Jehovah might give effect to his word, which he spoke through Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.
16 Et quand tous les Israélites virent que le roi ne les exauçait pas, le peuple répondit au roi en ces termes: En quoi sommes-nous participants de David? nous ne sommes point légataires du fils d'Isaï! Chacun à vos tentes, Israélites! Désormais pourvois à ta maison, David. Et tout Israël regagna ses tentes.
And all Israel saw that the king hearkened not to them; and the people answered the king saying, What portion have we in David? and [we have] no inheritance in the son of Jesse: every man to your tents, O Israel. Now see to thine own house, David! And all Israel went to their tents.
17 Quant aux Israélites domiciliés dans les villes de Juda, Roboam continua de régner sur eux.
But as for the children of Israel that dwelt in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them.
18 Alors le roi Roboam délégua Adoram qui présidait aux corvées; mais les enfants d'Israël le lapidèrent et il mourut. Et le roi Roboam se hâta de remonter sur son char et s'enfuit à Jérusalem.
And king Rehoboam sent Hadoram, who was over the levy; but the children of Israel stoned him with stones, that he died. And king Rehoboam hastened to mount his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem.
19 Ainsi Israël s'est détaché de la maison de David, comme il l'est aujourd'hui.
And Israel rebelled against the house of David, unto this day.
