1 Samuel 6
1 Et l'Arche de l'Éternel fut sept mois dans le pays des Philistins.
And it came to pass, that the ark of Yahweh was in the country of the Philistines, seven months.
2 Et les Philistins mandèrent les prêtres et les devins, et ils dirent: Que ferons-nous de l'Arche de l'Éternel? Indiquez-nous avec quoi nous devons la renvoyer dans son lieu?
Then called the Philistines for the priests and for the diviners, saying, What shall we do with the ark of Yahweh? Let us know, wherewith we shall send it to its own place.
3 Et ils répondirent: Si vous voulez renvoyer l'Arche du Dieu d'Israël, il ne faut pas la renvoyer sans rien, mais Lui payer une amende expiatoire: alors vous pourrez guérir et savoir pourquoi sa main n'a pas cessé de peser sur vous.
And they said—If ye are going to send away the ark of the God of Israel, do not send it away, empty, but ye must, surely return, to him, a guilt-offering, —then, shall ye be healed, and it shall be known to you, wherefore his hand would not turn away from you.
4 Et ils dirent: Quelle est l'amende que nous avons à Lui payer? Et ils reprirent: A raison du nombre des Princes des Philistins cinq bubons d'or et cinq souris d'or; car la plaie est une pour eux tous et pour vos Princes.
And they said—What shall be the guilt-offering, that we shall return to him? And they said—By the number of the lords of the Philistines, five tumours of gold, and five mice of gold, —for, one plague, was on you all, and on your lords.
5 Faites donc des effigies de vos bubons et des effigies de vos souris qui ravagent le pays et donnez gloire au Dieu d'Israël: peut-être aura-t-Il une main plus légère pour vous et pour votre dieu et pour votre pays.
Wherefore ye shall make likenesses of your turnouts, and likenesses of your mice that are laying waste the land, and shall, give unto the, God of Israel, glory, —Peradventure he will lighten his hand from off you, and from off your god, and from off your land.
6 Et pourquoi endurciriez-vous votre cœur, comme les Egyptiens et Pharaon endurcirent leur cœur? Après qu'il eut achevé Ses vengeances sur eux, ne leur permirent-ils pas de partir?
Wherefore, then, should ye make your heart dull, as the Egyptians and Pharaoh made their heart dull! When he had done his great doings upon them, did they not let them go, and they departed?
7 A l'œuvre donc! procurez-vous et faites un chariot neuf et deux vaches qui allaitent et qui n'aient pas porté le joug et attelez les vaches au chariot et ôtez-leur leurs veaux que vous ramènerez à l'étable.
Now, therefore, take and get ready, one new waggon, and two milch kine, whereon hath never come yoke, —then shall ye fasten the kine in the waggon, and withdraw their calves from them, into the shed;
8 Et prenez l'Arche de l'Éternel et placez-la sur le chariot, et les ouvrages par lesquels vous Lui payez l'amende expiatoire, mettez-les dans une cassette à côté; puis laissez-la partir
and ye shall take the ark of Yahweh, and place it in the waggon, also, the jewels of gold which ye send back to him as a guilt-offering, shall ye put into a coffer, at the side thereof, —so shall ye let it go, and it shall depart.
9 et regardez! Si elle se dirige vers Sa frontière en montant à Beth-Sémès, c'est Lui qui nous a fait ce grand mal; sinon nous saurons que ce n'est pas Sa main qui nous a frappés: c'est pour nous un événement fortuit.
Then shall ye look—if, by the way of its own boundary, it goeth up to Beth-shemesh, he, it was who caused us this great affliction, —but, if not, then shall we know that it was not, his hand, that smote us, a chance, it was, that befell us.
10 Et ainsi firent ces hommes; et ils prirent deux vaches qui allaitaient, et les attelèrent à un chariot, et ils tinrent les veaux enfermés à l'étable.
The men, therefore, did so, and took two milch kine, and fastened them in the waggon, —but, their calves, shut they up in the shed.
11 Et ils placèrent l'Arche de l'Éternel sur le chariot, ainsi que la cassette et les souris d'or et les effigies de leurs bubons.
And they put the ark of Yahweh, into the waggon, —also the coffer, with the mice of gold, and the likenesses of their tumours.
12 Et les vaches allèrent tout droit au chemin de Bethsémès, et elles suivirent une seule route allant toujours et mugissant, et sans s'écarter ni à droite ni à gauche, et les Princes des Philistins suivirent jusques aux confins de Bethsémès.
And the kine went straight along the road, on the way to Beth-shemesh, yea, along the main highway, they went, lowing as they went, turning not aside, to the right hand or to the left. And, the lords of the Philistines, went along after them, as far as the bounds of Beth-shemesh.
13 Or les Bethsémites récoltaient la moisson des orges dans la vallée; et ils levèrent les yeux et ils aperçurent l'Arche, et ils se réjouirent de la voir.
Now, they of Beth-shemesh, were reaping their wheat-harvest in the vale, —so they lifted up their eyes, and saw the ark, and rejoiced to meet it.
14 Et le chariot arriva dans le champ de Josué, Bethsémite, et fit halte là; or il y avait là une grande pierre. Et ils fendirent le bois du chariot, et offrirent les vaches en holocauste à l'Éternel.
And, the waggon, entered into the field of Joshua, a man of Beth-shemesh, and stood still, there, where also, was a great stone, —so they clave into pieces the planks of the waggon, and, the kine, offered they up as an ascending-sacrifice, unto Yahweh.
15 Et les Lévites descendirent l'Arche de l'Éternel, et la cassette qui y était jointe et contenait les ouvrages d'or; et ils les placèrent sur la grande pierre, et les gens de Bethsémès offrirent des holocaustes et sacrifièrent des victimes en ce jour à l'Éternel.
And, the Levites, took down the ark of Yahweh, and the coffer that was with it, wherein were the jewels of gold, and put them upon the great stone, —and, the men of Beth-shemesh, caused to go up ascending-offerings and offered sacrifices, that day, unto Yahweh.
16 Et les cinq Princes des Philistins le virent et retournèrent à Ekron le jour même.
And, the five lords of the Philistines, saw it, —and returned unto Ekron, the same day.
17 Or voici les bubons d'or par lesquels les Philistins payèrent à l'Éternel l'amende expiatoire: pour Asdod, un; pour Gaza, un; pour Askalon, un; pour Gath un; pour Ekron, un.
Now, these, are the golden boils which, the Philistines returned as a guilt-offering unto Yahweh, —For Ashdod, one, for Gaza, one, for Ashkelon, one, for Gath, one, for Ekron, one;
18 Et de souris d'or il y en avait en raison de toutes les villes des Philistins appartenant aux cinq princes depuis les villes fortes aux villages ruraux. Et témoin en est la grande pierre où ils déposèrent l'Arche de l'Éternel, jusqu'à ce jour, dans le champ de Josué, Bethsémite.
And the golden mice, by the number of all the cities of the Philistines, pertaining to the five lords, both fortified cities, and country villages, —yea, even the great meadow whereon they rested the ark of Yahweh, until this day, is in the field-land of Joshua, the man of Beth-shemesh.
19 Et Il porta des coups parmi les Bethsémites, parce qu'ils avaient regardé l'Arche de l'Éternel [sans respect], et Il frappa dans le peuple [ici] soixante-dix hommes, [là] cinquante mille, et le peuple fut dans le deuil de ce que l'Éternel eût frappé un si grand coup dans le peuple.
And, when he smote the men of Beth-shemesh, because they looked into the ark of Yahweh, yea smote of the people seventy men [and] fifty thousand men, the people mourned, for that Yahweh had smitten the people with a great smiting.
20 Et les gens de Bethsémès dirent: Qui pourrait tenir devant l'Éternel, ce Dieu saint? Et chez qui ira-t-elle en nous quittant?
Then said the men of Beth-shemesh, Who is able to stand before Yahweh, this holy God? and, unto whom, shall he go up from us?
21 Et ils envoyèrent des messagers aux habitants de Kiriath-Jearim pour dire: Les Philistins ont ramené l'Arche de l'Éternel; descendez et emmenez-la chez vous!
And they sent messengers unto the inhabitants of Kiriath-jearim, saying, —The Philistines have returned the ark of Yahweh, come down, fetch it up unto you.
