1 Samuel 25

1 Et Samuel mourut, et il y eut assemblée de tout Israël, et l'on célébra son deuil, et on lui donna la sépulture dans sa demeure à Rama. C'est alors que David fit un mouvement et descendit au désert de Paran.

AND Samuel died; and all the Israelites were gathered together, and lamented him, and buried him in his house at Ramah. And David arose, and went down to the wilderness of Paran.

2 Or à Maon était un homme ayant des biens à faire valoir sur le Carmel, homme très considérable, et il possédait trois mille moutons et mille chèvres et il assistait à la tonte de ses troupeaux sur le Carmel.

And there was a man in Maon, whose possessions were in Carmel; and the man was very great, and he had three thousand sheep, and a thousand goats: and he was shearing his sheep in Carmel.

3 Or cet homme se nommait Nabal et sa femme, Abigaïl, et cette femme excellait par l'intelligence et avait une belle figure; mais le mari était dur et méchant. Et c'était un descendant de Caleb.

Now the name of the man was Nabal; and the name of his wife Abigail: and she was a woman of good understanding, and of a beautiful countenance: but the man was churlish and evil in his doings; and he was of the house of Caleb.

4 Et David apprit au désert que Nabal faisait la tonte de ses moutons.

And David heard in the wilderness that Nabal did shear his sheep.

5 Et David dépêcha dix valets avec cette instruction: Montez au Carmel et présentez-vous chez Nabal et le saluez de ma part

And David sent out ten young men, and David said unto the young men, Get you up to Carmel, and go to Nabal, and greet him in my name:

6 et lui tenez ce langage: Pour la vie! salut à toi, et salut à toute ta maison et salut à tout ce qui tient à toi!

And thus shall ye say to him that liveth in prosperity, Peace be both to thee, and peace be to thine house, and peace be unto all that thou hast.

7 Maintenant, j'apprends que tu as des tondeurs; or tes bergers ont été avec nous; nous ne les avons point molestés, et ils n'ont éprouvé aucune perte quelconque pendant tout le temps de leur séjour au Carmel,

And now I have heard that thou hast shearers: now thy shepherds which were with us, we hurt them not, neither was there ought missing unto them, all the while they were in Carmel.

8 – interroge-les, ils te renseigneront, – que donc mes valets trouvent grâce à tes yeux, car nous sommes venus pour un jour de fête; veuille donner ce qui se trouvera sous ta main, à tes serviteurs et à ton fils David!

Ask thy young men, and they will shew thee. Wherefore let the young men find favour in thine eyes: for we come in a good day: give, I pray thee, whatsoever cometh to thine hand unto thy servants, and to thy son David.

9 Les valets de David vinrent donc et de la part de David ils tinrent à Nabal ce langage, puis ils attendirent.

And when David’s young men came, they spake to Nabal according to all those words in the name of David, and ceased.

10 Mais Nabal fit cette réponse aux serviteurs de David: Qui est David, et qui est le fils d'Isaï? Aujourd hui il y a beaucoup de serviteurs qui rompent avec leurs maîtres!

And Nabal answered David’s servants, and said, Who is David? and who is the son of Jesse? there be many servants now a days that break away every man from his master.

11 Et faut-il que je prenne mon pain et mon eau et la chair des bêtes que j'ai tuées pour mes tondeurs et que je les donne à des gens desquels je ne sais d'où ils sont?

Shall I then take my bread, and my water, and my flesh that I have killed for my shearers, and give it unto men, whom I know not whence they be?

12 Et le valets de David rebroussant chemin s'en retournèrent à leur arrivée ils lui firent un rapport exact du tout.

So David’s young men turned their way, and went again, and came and told him all those sayings.

13 Alors David dit à ses hommes: Ceignez chacun votre épée! Et ils ceignirent chacun son épée, et David ceignit aussi son épée, et ils se mirent en marche sous la conduite de David au nombre d'environ quatre cents, et deux cents restèrent auprès des bagages.

And David said unto his men, Gird ye on every man his sword. And they girded on every man his sword; and David also girded on his sword: and there went up after David about four hundred men; and two hundred abode by the stuff.

14 Cependant Abigaïl, femme de Nabal, fut informée par l'un des valets, qui lui dit: Voilà que du désert David a envoyé des messagers pour saluer notre maître, mais celui-ci les a rebutés avec rudesse.

But one of the young men told Abigail, Nabal’s wife, saying, Behold, David sent messengers out of the wilderness to salute our master; and he railed on them.

15 Et ces hommes ont beaucoup de bonté pour nous; et nous n'avons point été molestés, et n'avons éprouvé aucune perte quelconque pendant toute la saison où nous avons cheminé avec eux;

But the men were very good unto us, and we were not hurt, neither missed we any thing, as long as we were conversant with them, when we were in the fields:

16 durant notre séjour aux champs ils ont été pour nous un rempart et la nuit et le jour tant que nous avons été à côté d'eux occupés à faire paître nos troupeaux.

They were a wall unto us both by night and day, all the while we were with them keeping the sheep.

17 Maintenant examine et vois ce que tu as à faire, car la ruine de notre maître et de toute sa maison est résolue; car c'est un méchant homme; on ne peut lui parler.

Now therefore know and consider what thou wilt do; for evil is determined against our master, and against all his household: for he is such a son of Belial, that a man cannot speak to him.

18 Alors Abigaïl fit diligence, et elle prit deux cents pains et deux outres de vin et cinq moutons apprêtés et cinq mesures de grain rôti et cent gâteaux de raisins secs et deux cents bols de figues, qu'elle chargea sur les ânes;

Then Abigail made haste, and took two hundred loaves, and two bottles of wine, and five sheep ready dressed, and five measures of parched corn, and an hundred clusters of raisins, and two hundred cakes of figs, and laid them on asses.

19 et elle dit à ses valets: Précédez-moi! je vous suivrai. Or elle ne mit point Nabal, son mari, au fait.

And she said unto her servants, Go on before me; behold, I come after you. But she told not her husband Nabal.

20 Et cheminant montée sur son âne, elle débouchait à une anfracture de la montagne, lorsque voilà qu'elle fit la rencontre de David descendant avec ses hommes; et elle se trouva en face d'eux.

And it was so, as she rode on the ass, that she came down by the covert of the hill, and, behold, David and his men came down against her; and she met them.

21 Or David avait dit: C'est en pure perte que j'ai surveillé tout ce que cet homme-là a dans le désert, et empêché que rien ne fût soustrait de ce qui lui appartient: il m'a rendu le mal pour le bien.

Now David had said, Surely in vain have I kept all that this fellow hath in the wilderness, so that nothing was missed of all that pertained unto him: and he hath requited me evil for good.

22 Qu'ainsi Dieu traite les ennemis de David, et plus mal encore, si jusqu'au point du jour je laisse subsister rien de ce qui lui appartient, fut-ce l'enfant qui pisse à la muraille!

So and more also do God unto the enemies of David, if I leave of all that pertain to him by the morning light any that pisseth against the wall.

23 Et à la vue de David, Abigaïl s'empressa de descendre de l'âne qu'elle montait, et en face de David, elle inclina sa tête et se prosterna jusqu'à terre;

And when Abigail saw David, she hasted, and lighted off the ass, and fell before David on her face, and bowed herself to the ground,

24 et, se jetant à ses pieds elle dit: A moi la faute, mon Seigneur! daigne permettre à ta servante de se faire entendre à tes oreilles, et écoute les explications de ta servante!

And fell at his feet, and said, Upon me, my lord, upon me let this iniquity be: and let thine handmaid, I pray thee, speak in thine audience, and hear the words of thine handmaid.

25 Veuille, mon Seigneur, ne pas t'inquiéter de cet homme de rien, de Nabal; car il est ce que son nom indique: Nabal (fou) tel est son nom, et il y a chez lui folie; quant à moi, ta servante, je n'ai point vu les valets de mon Seigneur, que tu as envoyés.

Let not my lord, I pray thee, regard this man of Belial, even Nabal: for as his name is, so is he; Nabal is his name, and folly is with him: but I thine handmaid saw not the young men of my lord, whom thou didst send.

26 Or, mon Seigneur, aussi vrai que l'Éternel vit, et que tu vis toi-même, aussi vrai est-il que l'Éternel t'a empêché de devenir coupable de meurtre et de te venger de ta propre main. Ainsi, ils auront beau être comme Nabal, tes ennemis et ceux qui cherchent à nuire à mon Seigneur!…

Now therefore, my lord, as the Lord liveth, and as thy soul liveth, seeing the Lord hath withholden thee from coming to shed blood, and from avenging thyself with thine own hand, now let thine enemies, and they that seek evil to my lord, be as Nabal.

27 Accepte donc ce présent qu'apporte à mon Seigneur ta servante, et le donne aux valets qui vont à la suite de mon Seigneur…

And now this blessing which thine handmaid hath brought unto my lord, let it even be given unto the young men that follow my lord.

28 Ah! pardonne l'offense de ta servante! Car l'Éternel veut créer à mon Seigneur une maison stable, car mon Seigneur soutient les guerres de l'Éternel, et le mal ne t'atteindra pas durant ta vie.

I pray thee, forgive the trespass of thine handmaid: for the Lord will certainly make my lord a sure house; because my lord fighteth the battles of the Lord, and evil hath not been found in thee all thy days.

29 Et si des hommes se lèvent pour te persécuter et attenter à ta vie, la vie de mon Seigneur sera serrée dans l'écrin de la vie auprès de l'Éternel, ton Dieu, tandis que la vie de tes ennemis sera agitée dans la paume de la fronde.

Yet a man is risen to pursue thee, and to seek thy soul: but the soul of my lord shall be bound in the bundle of life with the Lord thy God; and the souls of thine enemies, them shall he sling out, as out of the middle of a sling.

30 Et lorsque l'Éternel accomplira pour mon Seigneur toutes les excellentes promesses qu'il t'a faites, et qu'il l'ordonnera souverain d'Israël,

And it shall come to pass, when the Lord shall have done to my lord according to all the good that he hath spoken concerning thee, and shall have appointed thee ruler over Israel;

31 mon Seigneur n'aura ni remords, ni embarras de conscience pour avoir versé gratuitement le sang et s'être vengé lui-même. Mais lorsque mon Seigneur sera l'objet des bienfaits de l'Éternel, souviens-toi de ta servante.

That this shall be no grief unto thee, nor offence of heart unto my lord, either that thou hast shed blood causeless, or that my lord hath avenged himself: but when the Lord shall have dealt well with my lord, then remember thine handmaid.

32 Et David dit à Abigaïl: Béni soit l'Éternel, Dieu d'Israël, qui m'a fait faire aujourd'hui ta rencontre.

And David said to Abigail, Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, which sent thee this day to meet me:

33 Et béni soit ton jugement! et bénie sois-tu pour m'avoir empêché en ce jour de me rendre coupable de meurtre, et de me venger de ma propre main!

And blessed be thy advice, and blessed be thou, which hast kept me this day from coming to shed blood, and from avenging myself with mine own hand.

34 Sans cela, par la vie de l'Éternel, Dieu d'Israël, qui m'a empêché de te faire du mal, si tu ne t'étais empressée, et ne m'avais prévenu, il ne resterait d'ici au point du jour, rien de Nabal, fût-ce l'enfant qui pisse à la muraille.

For in very deed, as the Lord God of Israel liveth, which hath kept me back from hurting thee, except thou hadst hasted and come to meet me, surely there had not been left unto Nabal by the morning light any that pisseth against the wall.

35 Et David reçut de sa main ce qu'elle lui présentait et il lui dit: Regagne en paix ta maison! Voici, j'ai écouté ta voix, et eu égard à ta personne.

So David received of her hand that which she had brought him, and said unto her, Go up in peace to thine house; see, I have hearkened to thy voice, and have accepted thy person.

36 Et lorsque Abigaïl entra chez Nabal, voilà qu'il avait un festin dans sa maison, comme le festin du Roi; et le cœur de Nabal était en belle humeur, et il s'était enivré à l'excès. Et jusqu'au matin elle ne l'informa d'aucun détail, ni grand, ni petit.

And Abigail came to Nabal; and, behold, he held a feast in his house, like the feast of a king; and Nabal’s heart was merry within him, for he was very drunken: wherefore she told him nothing, less or more, until the morning light.

37 Et le matin l'ivresse de Nabal s'étant dissipée, sa femme lui raconta toutes ces choses et il en eut intérieurement la mort dans le cœur et il fut pétrifié.

But it came to pass in the morning, when the wine was gone out of Nabal, and his wife had told him these things, that his heart died within him, and he became as a stone.

38 Et il se passa environ dix jours, et l'Éternel frappa Nabal, qui mourut.

And it came to pass about ten days after, that the Lord smote Nabal, that he died.

39 Et à la nouvelle de la mort de Nabal, David dit: Béni soit l'Éternel qui a tiré sur Nabal vengeance de mon outrage, et préservé du crime Son serviteur! – C'est ainsi que l'Éternel fit retomber la méchanceté de Nabal sur sa propre tête.

And when David heard that Nabal was dead, he said, Blessed be the Lord, that hath pleaded the cause of my reproach from the hand of Nabal, and hath kept his servant from evil: for the Lord hath returned the wickedness of Nabal upon his own head. And David sent and communed with Abigail, to take her to him to wife.

40 Et David, par une délégation, fit proposer à Abigaïl de l'épouser. Et les serviteurs de David arrivèrent chez Abigaïl au Carmel, et lui transmirent le message en ces termes: David nous a délégués auprès de toi afin de te prendre pour être sa femme.

And when the servants of David were come to Abigail to Carmel, they spake unto her, saying, David sent us unto thee, to take thee to him to wife.

41 Alors Abigaïl se leva et s'inclina la face contre terre et dit: Voici ta servante pour faire le service de laver les pieds des serviteurs de mon Seigneur.

And she arose, and bowed herself on her face to the earth, and said, Behold, let thine handmaid be a servant to wash the feet of the servants of my lord.

42 Et Abigaïl avec empressement se leva, et elle prit l'âne pour monture avec cinq jeunes filles pour suivantes, et elle se mit en route à la suite des délégués de David, et elle devint sa femme.

And Abigail hasted, and arose, and rode upon an ass, with five damsels of hers that went after her; and she went after the messengers of David, and became his wife.

43 David épousa aussi Ahinoam de Jizréel, et l'une et l'autre elles furent ses femmes.

David also took Ahinoam of Jezreel; and they were also both of them his wives.

44 Cependant Saül maria Michal, sa fille, femme de David, à Palti, fils de Laïs, de Gallim.

But Saul had given Michal his daughter, David’s wife, to Phalti the son of Laish, which was of Gallim.
