1 Samuel 21

1 Et David vint à Nob, chez Ahimélech, le Prêtre; et Ahimélech accourut au devant de David et lui dit: Pourquoi es-tu seul, sans personne avec toi?

Then came David to Nob to Ahimelech the priest: and Ahimelech was afraid at the meeting of David, and said to him, Why are you alone, and no man with you?

2 Et David répondit au Prêtre Ahimélech: Le Roi m'a chargé d'une affaire et m'a dit: Personne ne doit rien savoir de l'affaire pour laquelle je te dépêche, non plus que des instructions que je t'ai données. Et j'ai marqué aux gens de ma suite un certain lieu pour rendez-vous.

And David said to Ahimelech the priest, The king has commanded me a business, and has said to me, Let no man know any thing of the business about which I send you, and what I have commanded you: and I have appointed my servants to such and such a place.

3 Et maintenant ce que tu as sous la main, donne-le moi, cinq pains ou ce qui se trouvera.

Now therefore what is under your hand? give me five loaves of bread in my hand, or what there is present.

4 Et le Prêtre répondit à David et lui dit: Je n'ai pas sous la main de pain ordinaire; il n'y a que du pain sacré; si tes gens s'étaient seulement abstenus de femmes!

And the priest answered David, and said, There is no common bread under my hand, but there is hallowed bread; if the young men have kept themselves at least from women.

5 Et David répondit au Prêtre et lui dit: Ce qui est certain, c'est que depuis nombre de jours tout accès auprès des femmes nous est fermé, et à mon départ mes gens avaient leurs personnes en état de sainteté, et l'usage profane que nous voulons faire d'une chose sacrée, sera aujourd'hui sanctifié par l'état de nos personnes.

And David answered the priest, and said to him, Of a truth women have been kept from us about these three days, since I came out, and the vessels of the young men are holy, and the bread is in a manner common, yes, though it were sanctified this day in the vessel.

6 Alors le Prêtre lui remit le pain sacré, car il n'y avait là pas d'autre pain que le pain de présentation, qu'on avait enlevé de devant l'Éternel pour substituer au moment même du pain chaud à celui qu'on ôtait.

So the priest gave him hallowed bread: for there was no bread there but the show bread, that was taken from before the LORD, to put hot bread in the day when it was taken away.

7 [Or là se trouvait en ce jour un homme d'entre les serviteurs de Saül, séquestré devant l'Éternel; il se nommait Doëg, était Iduméen et grand-maître des bergers de Saül].

Now a certain man of the servants of Saul was there that day, detained before the LORD; and his name was Doeg, an Edomite, the most chief of the herdsmen that belonged to Saul.

8 Et David dit à Ahimélech: N'as-tu pas à ta portée une pique ou une épée? Car je n'ai pris avec moi ni mon épée ni mon équipement, car la commission du Roi était pressante.

And David said to Ahimelech, And is there not here under your hand spear or sword? for I have neither brought my sword nor my weapons with me, because the king’s business required haste.

9 Et le Prêtre dit: L'épée de Goliath, le Philistin, que tu as fait tomber sous tes coups dans la vallée des Térébinthes, voici, est enveloppée dans une toile derrière l'Ephod; si tu veux la prendre prends-là; car ici il n'y en a pas d'autre que celle-là. Et David dit: Elle n'a pas sa pareille; donne-la moi.

And the priest said, The sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom you slew in the valley of Elah, behold, it is here wrapped in a cloth behind the ephod: if you will take that, take it: for there is no other save that here. And David said, There is none like that; give it me.

10 Et David se remit en route, continuant le jour même à fuir devant Saül, et il arriva chez Achis, Roi de Gath.

And David arose and fled that day for fear of Saul, and went to Achish the king of Gath.

11 Et les serviteurs d'Achis disaient de lui: N'est-ce pas David, le Roi du pays? N'est-ce pas à lui que dans les chœurs on chantait ces paroles: Saül a tué ses mille, et David ses dix mille!

And the servants of Achish said to him, Is not this David the king of the land? did they not sing one to another of him in dances, saying, Saul has slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands?

12 Et ces discours firent impression sur le cœur de David, qui prit une grande peur d'Achis, Roi de Gath.

And David laid up these words in his heart, and was sore afraid of Achish the king of Gath.

13 Et il contrefit l'insensé devant eux, et il se démenait comme un furieux entre leurs mains, et il grattait les battants de la porte et laissait couler sa salive dans sa barbe.

And he changed his behavior before them, and feigned himself mad in their hands, and scrabbled on the doors of the gate, and let his spittle fall down on his beard.

14 Alors Achis dit à ses serviteurs: Voici, vous voyez que cet homme est hors de sens; pourquoi me l'amenez-vous?

Then said Achish to his servants, See, you see the man is mad: why then have you brought him to me?

15 Manqué-je de fous, que vous m'amenez celui-ci pour m'exposer à ses accès? Doit-il entrer dans ma maison?

Have I need of mad men, that you have brought this fellow to play the mad man in my presence? shall this fellow come into my house?
