1 Samuel 20
1 Et David s'enfuit de Naioth près Rama et il vint trouver Jonathan et dit: Qu'ai-je fait et quel est mon crime et quel est mon péché contre ton père pour qu'il attente à ma vie?
And David fled from Naioth in Ramah, and came and said before Jonathan, What have I done? what [is] my iniquity? and what [is] my sin before thy father, that he seeketh my life?
2 Et [Jonathan] lui dit: A Dieu ne plaise! Tu ne mourras point. Voici, mon père ne fait rien? chose grande ou petite, sans me mettre en part; et pourquoi mon père se cacherait-il de moi en ceci? Il n'en est rien.
And he said to him, Far be it from thee; thou shalt not die: behold, my father will do nothing, either great or small, but that he will show it to me: and why should my father hide this thing from me? it [is] not [so].
3 Et David fit encore serment et dit: Ton père sait très bien que j'ai trouvé grâce à tes yeux, et il aura dit: Il ne faut pas que Jonathan en soit instruit de peur qu'il ne s'afflige. Mais certainement, par la vie de l'Éternel et par ta vie, il n'y a qu'un pas entre moi et la mort.
And David swore moreover, and said, Thy father certainly knoweth that I have found grace in thy eyes; and he saith, Let not Jonathan know this, lest he should be grieved: But truly [as] the LORD liveth, and [as] thy soul liveth, [there is] but a step between me and death.
4 Et Jonathan dit à David: Je ferai pour toi ce que ton âme dictera.
Then said Jonathan to David, Whatever thy soul desireth, I will even do [it] for thee.
5 Et David dit à Jonathan: Voici, demain, c'est lune nouvelle, et j'ai ma place à la table du Roi; mais laisse-moi libre et j'irai me cacher dans la campagne jusqu'à la troisième soirée.
And David said to Jonathan, Behold, to morrow [is] the new-moon, and I should not fail to sit with the king at meat: but let me go, that I may hide myself in the field to the third [day] at evening.
6 Si ton père remarquait mon absence, dis: David m'a prié de lui permettre de faire une course à Bethléhem, sa cité, à l'occasion d'un sacrifice annuel qui s'y fait pour toute la famille.
If thy father shall at all miss me, then say, David earnestly asked [leave] of me, that he might run to Beth-lehem his city: for [there is] a yearly sacrifice there for all the family.
7 S'il reprend ainsi: C'est bon! il y a paix pour ton serviteur; mais s'il se courrouce, sache que ma perte est arrêtée par devers lui.
If he shall say thus, [It is] well; thy servant will have peace: but if he shall be very wroth, [then] be sure that evil is determined by him.
8 Montre donc de l'affection à ton serviteur, car tu as associé avec toi ton serviteur dans un contrat scellé devant l'Éternel. Or, s'il y a transgression de ma part, donne-moi la mort toi-même; pourquoi m'adresserais-tu à ton père?
Therefore thou shalt deal kindly with thy servant; for thou hast brought thy servant into a covenant of the LORD with thee: notwithstanding, if there is in me iniquity, slay me thyself; for why shouldst thou bring me to thy father?
9 Et Jonathan dit: A Dieu ne plaise! Mais si j'apprends de science certaine que ta perte résolue chez mon père doit t'atteindre, ne t'en informerai-je pas?
And Jonathan said, Far be it from thee: for if I knew certainly that evil is determined by my father to come upon thee, then would not I tell it thee?
10 Et David dit à Jonathan: Qui m'informerait dans le cas où ton père te ferait quelque réponse dure?
Then said David to Jonathan, Who shall tell me? or what [if] thy father shall answer thee roughly?
11 Et Jonathan dit à David: Viens et sortons dans la campagne. Et ils gagnèrent tous deux la campagne.
And Jonathan said to David, Come, and let us go out into the field. And they went out both of them into the field.
12 Et Jonathan dit à David: [Par] l'Éternel, Dieu d'Israël, si dans l'espace de demain à après-demain je sonde mon père, et s'il se montre bien disposé pour David, et que, le cas échéant, je ne te le mande pas et ne t'en informe pas…
And Jonathan said to David, O LORD God of Israel, when I have sounded my father about to-morrow any time, [or] the third [day], and behold, [if there be] good towards David, and I then send not to thee, and show it thee;
13 que l'Éternel fasse ceci à Jonathan et pis encore. Si je vois chez mon père une disposition sinistre à ton égard, je t'en instruirai et te mettrai à même de partir de manière à t'en aller sain et sauf. Et que l'Éternel soit avec toi, comme il fut avec mon père.
The LORD do so and much more to Jonathan: but if it shall please my father [to do] thee evil, then I will show it to thee, and send thee away, that thou mayest go in peace: and the LORD be with thee, as he hath been with my father.
14 Et puisses-tu, si je dois vivre encore, puisses-tu en agir envers moi avec la bonté de l'Éternel,
And thou shalt, not only while yet I live, show me the kindness of the LORD, that I may not die:
15 et, si je viens à mourir, ne jamais retirer ta bienveillance de ma maison. Et si l'Éternel fait disparaître de la face de la terre les ennemis de David jusqu'au dernier,
But [also] thou shalt not withdraw thy kindness from my house for ever: no, not when the LORD hath cut off the enemies of David every one from the face of the earth.
16 que le nom de Jonathan ne disparaisse pas de la maison de David! Mais que l'Éternel tire satisfaction des ennemis de David!
So Jonathan made [a covenant] with the house of David, [saying], Let the LORD even require [it] at the hand of David's enemies.
17 Et Jonathan réitéra son serment à David parce qu'il l'aimait; car il l'aimait comme son âme.
And Jonathan caused David to swear again, because he loved him: for he loved him as he loved his own soul.
18 Et Jonathan lui dit: Demain, c'est lune nouvelle, et ton absence sera remarquée, car ton siège sera vacant;
Then Jonathan said to David, To-morrow [is] the new-moon: and thou wilt be missed, because thy seat will be empty.
19 après-demain donc hâte-toi de descendre et viens à l'endroit où tu t'es caché le jour de l'attentat et tiens-toi vers la pierre Azel.
And [when] thou hast stayed three days, [then] thou shalt go down quickly, and come to the place where thou didst hide thyself when the business was [in hand], and shalt remain by the stone Ezel.
20 Pour moi, je décocherai trois flèches dans cette direction pour tirer au but.
And I will shoot three arrows on the side [of it], as though I shot at a mark.
21 Et voici, j'enverrai le valet en disant: « Va chercher les flèches! » Si je lui dis: « Voici, les flèches sont en deçà de toi, enlève-les! » viens, car tu es en sûreté, il n'y a rien, par la vie de l'Éternel.
And behold, I will send a lad, [saying], Go, find the arrows. If I expressly say to the lad, Behold, the arrows [are] on this side of thee, take them; then come thou: for [there is] peace to thee, and no hurt; [as] the LORD liveth.
22 Mais si j'adresse au jeune homme ces paroles: « Voilà, les flèches sont en avant de toi », va t'en, car l'Éternel te fait partir.
But if I say thus to the young man, Behold, the arrows [are] beyond thee; go thy way: for the LORD hath sent thee away.
23 Et quant à la parole que nous avons prononcée toi et moi, que l'Éternel reste entre toi et moi éternellement!
And [as to] the matter which thou and I have spoken of, behold, the LORD [be] between thee and me for ever.
24 David se cacha donc dans la campagne. Et c'était nouvelle lune et le Roi vint se mettre à table pour prendre son repas.
So David hid himself in the field: and when the new-moon had come, the king sat down to eat food.
25 Et le Roi, cette fois comme les autres, prit place sur son siège, le siège adossé à la muraille; et Jonathan s'étant levé, Abner prit place à côté de Saül et la place de David resta vide.
And the king sat upon his seat, as at other times, [even] upon a seat by the wall: and Jonathan arose, and Abner sat by Saul's side, and David's place was empty.
26 Cependant ce jour-là Saül ne dit mot; car sa pensée était: il aura par aventure contracté quelque souillure; c'est qu'il n'est pas en état de pureté.
Nevertheless Saul spoke not any thing that day: for he thought, Something hath befallen him, he [is] not clean; surely he [is] not clean.
27 Le lendemain de la nouvelle lune, le second jour, comme la place de David était encore vacante, Saül dit à Jonathan son fils: Pourquoi le fils d'Isaï n'a-t-il ni hier ni aujourd'hui paru à table?
And it came to pass on the morrow, [which was] the second [day] of the month, that David's place was empty: and Saul said to Jonathan his son, Why cometh not the son of Jesse to eat, neither yesterday, nor to-day?
28 Et Jonathan répondit à Saül: David m'a prié instamment de le laisser aller à Bethléhem,
And Jonathan answered Saul, David earnestly asked [leave] of me [to go] to Beth-lehem:
29 et il m'a dit: Donne-moi un congé car nous avons dans la ville un sacrifice de famille, et mon frère m'a mandé; si donc j'ai trouvé grâce à tes yeux, laisse-moi libre d'aller afin que je voie mes frères; telle est la raison pour laquelle il ne paraît pas à la table du Roi.
And he said, Let me go, I pray thee; for our family hath a sacrifice in the city; and my brother he hath commanded me [to be there]: and now if I have found favor in thy eyes, let me get away, I pray thee, and see my brethren. Therefore he cometh not to the king's table.
30 Alors la colère de Saül s'enflamma contre Jonathan et il lui dit: Fils d'une perverse obstinée! ne connaissé-je pas la préférence que tu as pour le fils d'Isaï, à ta honte et à la honte du ventre de ta mère?
Then Saul's anger was kindled against Jonathan, and he said to him, Thou son of the perverse rebellious [woman], do not I know that thou hast chosen the son of Jesse to thy own confusion, and to the confusion of thy mother's nakedness?
31 Car tant que le fils d'Isaï sera vivant sur la terre, il n'y aura de position assurée ni pour toi ni pour ta souveraineté! Dépêche donc à l'instant et fais qu'on me l'amène, car c'est un enfant de la mort.
For as long as the son of Jesse liveth upon the earth, thou shalt not be established, nor thy kingdom. Wherefore now send and bring him to me, for he shall surely die.
32 Et Jonathan répondit à Saül, son père, et lui dit: Pourquoi le mettre à mort? qu'a-t-il fait?
And Jonathan answered Saul his father, and said to him, Why shall he be slain? what hath he done?
33 Alors Saül lança contre lui sa pique pour le percer, et Jonathan comprit que c'était parti arrêté chez son père que de faire mourir David.
And Saul cast a javelin at him to smite him: by which Jonathan knew that it was determined by his father to slay David.
34 Et Jonathan se leva de table enflammé de colère, et le second jour de la nouvelle lune il ne mangea point, car il était chagriné au sujet de David parce que son père l'avait outragé.
So Jonathan arose from the table in fierce anger, and ate no food the second day of the month: for he was grieved for David, because his father had done him shame.
35 Et dès le matin Jonathan alla dans la campagne au rendez-vous fixé avec David, ayant avec lui un petit valet.
And it came to pass in the morning, that Jonathan went out into the field at the time appointed with David, and a little lad with him.
36 Et il dit à son valet: Cours, va chercher les flèches que je tire! Le valet courut et Jonathan tira la flèche de manière à le dépasser.
And he said to his lad, Run, find now the arrows which I shoot. [And] as the lad ran, he shot an arrow, beyond him.
37 Et lorsque le valet fut venu jusqu'à la portée des flèches tirées par Jonathan, celui-ci lui cria par derrière: La flèche n'est-elle pas en avant de toi?
And when the lad had come to the place of the arrow which Jonathan had shot, Jonathan cried after the lad, and said, [Is] not the arrow beyond thee?
38 Et Jonathan cria au valet par derrière: Fais diligence, hâte-toi, ne t'arrête pas! Et le valet de Jonathan ramassa les flèches et revint vers sont maître.
And Jonathan cried after the lad, Make speed, haste, stay not. And Jonathan's lad gathered up the arrows, and came to his master.
39 Or le valet ne se doutait de rien, Jonathan et David seuls savaient de quoi il s'agissait.
But the lad knew not any thing: only Jonathan and David knew the matter.
40 Et Jonathan remit ses armes à son valet et lui dit: Va et les porte en ville.
And Jonathan gave his arms to his lad, and said to him, Go, carry [them] to the city.
41 Le valet partit, et David sortit d'auprès [le tas de pierres] qu'il avait devant lui et se jeta la face contre terre et adora par trois fois, et ils se donnèrent l'un à l'autre le baiser, et ils pleurèrent ensemble, David jusqu'au sanglot.
[And] as soon as the lad was gone, David arose out of [a place] towards the south, and fell on his face to the ground, and bowed himself three times: and they kissed one another, and wept one with another, until David exceeded.
42 Et Jonathan dit à David: Va en paix! Nous en resterons à ce que nous avons juré tous les deux par le Nom de l'Éternel en disant que l'Éternel soit éternellement entre moi et toi, entre ma race et la tienne.
And Jonathan said to David, Go in peace, forasmuch as we have sworn both of us in the name of the LORD, saying, The LORD be between me and thee, and between my seed and thy seed for ever. And he arose and departed: and Jonathan went into the city.
