1 Samuel 1

1 Et il y avait un homme de Ramathaïm-Tsophim, des monts d'Ephraïm, nommé Elkana, fils de Jeroham, fils d'Elihu, fils de Thobu, fils de Tsouph: c'était un Ephratite.

And there was a certain man, of Ramathaim-zuphi, of the hill country of Ephraim, —whose name, was Elkanah, son of Jeroham, son of Elihu, son of Tohu, son of Zuph, an Ephraimite;

2 Et il avait deux femmes nommées, l'une Hanna, la seconde Peninna; et Peninna avait des enfants, mais Hanna était sans enfants.

and, he, had two wives, the name of the one, Hannah, and, the name of the other, Peninnah, —and Peninnah had children, but, Hannah, had no children.

3 Et chaque année depuis sa ville cet homme faisait le pèlerinage pour offrir ses adorations et ses sacrifices à l'Éternel des armées dans Silo. Or là se trouvaient les deux fils d'Eli, Hophni et Phinées, Prêtres de l'Éternel.

So then that man went up, out of his city, from time to time, to worship and to sacrifice unto Yahweh of hosts, in Shiloh, —and, there, were the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas, priests unto Yahweh.

4 Et le jour où Elkana faisait son sacrifice, il en donnait des parts à Peninna, sa femme, et à tous les fils et filles de celle-ci,

And, when the day came for Elkanah to sacrifice, he used to give, to Peninnah his wife, and to all her sons and her daughters, portions;

5 mais à Hanna il donnait une double part, car il aimait Hanna, mais l'Éternel l'avait frappée de stérilité.

and, unto Hannah, used he to give one portion, —howbeit, Hannah, he loved, although, Yahweh, had restrained her from having children.

6 Et sa rivale la mortifiait jusqu'à l'aigrir dans le but de l'irriter parce que l'Éternel l'avait frappée de stérilité.

And her rival used even to cause her great vexation, for the sake of provoking her, —because Yahweh had restrained her from having children.

7 C'est ainsi qu'il faisait d'année en année toutes les fois que [Hanna] se rendait à la maison de l'Éternel, et c'est ainsi que Peninna la mortifiait; et elle pleurait et ne mangeait point.

And, thus, used she to do, year by year, whenever she went up to the house of Yahweh, thus, used she to vex her, —and she wept, and would not eat.

8 Alors Elkana, son mari, lui disait: Hanna, pourquoi pleures-tu et ne manges-tu pas? et pourquoi ton cœur s'attriste-t-il? Ne suis-je pas pour toi plus que dix fils?

So Elkanah her husband said to her—Hannah! wherefore shouldst thou weep? and wherefore wilt thou not eat? and wherefore should thy heart be sad? Am, I, not better to thee, than ten sons?

9 Et Hanna se leva, après qu'on eut mangé et bu à Silo. Or le Prêtre Eli était assis sur son siège à côté de la Porte du Temple de l'Éternel.

And Hannah rose up, after she had eaten in Shiloh, and after she had drunk, —and, Eli the priest, was sitting upon his chair, by the door-post of the temple of Yahweh;

10 Et elle avait l'amertume dans le cœur, et elle implorait l'Éternel, et était toute en larmes.

and, she being in bitterness of soul, prayed unto Yahweh, and, wept sore.

11 Et elle prononça un vœu en ces termes: Éternel des armées, si tu veux prendre en considération la misère de ta servante, et te souvenir de moi, et ne point oublier ta servante, et donner à ta servante une postérité mâle, alors j'en ferai don à l'Éternel tout le temps de sa vie, et jamais rasoir ne passera sur sa tête.

And she vowed a vow, and said—Yahweh of hosts! If thou wilt, look, upon the humiliation of thy handmaid, and remember me, and not forget thy handmaid, but wilt give unto thy handmaid a man-child, then will I give him unto Yahweh, all the days of his life, and no, razor, shall come upon his head.

12 Et comme elle prolongeait sa prière devant l'Éternel, Eli observa sa bouche.

And so it was, as she continued praying before Yahweh, that Eli was watching her mouth.

13 Or Hanna parlait mentalement, ne remuant que les lèvres, mais sa voix ne se faisait pas entendre; et Eli la crut ivre.

But as for, Hannah, she, was speaking in her heart, only her lips, were moving, but, her voice, could not be heard, —so Eli thought she had been drunken.

14 Et Eli lui dit: Jusques à quand montreras-tu ton ivresse? dissipe le vin qui te maîtrise?

And Eli said unto her, How long, wilt thou be, drunken? Put away thy wine from thee.

15 Et Hanna répondit et dit: Non, mon Seigneur! je suis une femme qui souffre intérieurement, et je n'ai bu ni vin ni cervoise, mais j'épanchais mon cœur devant l'Éternel.

And Hannah responded and said—Nay! my lord; A woman depressed in spirit, am I: neither wine nor strong drink, have I drunk, —but I poured out my soul, before Yahweh.

16 Ne mets pas ta servante au rang des femmes viles; c'est sous le poids de ma pensée et de mon chagrin que j'ai parlé jusqu'ici.

Do not count thy handmaid for an abandoned woman, —for, out of the abundance of my grief and my vexation, have I spoken, hitherto.

17 Et Eli répondit et dit: Va en paix! et que le Dieu d'Israël t'accorde la requête que tu lui as adressée.

Then responded Eli, and said—Go and prosper! And the, God of Israel, grant thy petition which thou hast asked of him!

18 Et elle dit: Puisse ta servante trouver grâce à tes yeux! Là-dessus elle suivit sa route, et elle mangea, et elle n'eut plus le même air.

And she said: Let thy serving-woman find favour, in thine eyes. So the woman went her way, and did eat, and, her countenance, was sad no longer.

19 Et s'étant levés dès le matin, et avant présenté leurs adorations à l'Éternel, ils s'en retournèrent et revinrent chez eux à Rama. Et Elkana connut Hanna, sa femme, et l'Éternel se ressouvint d'elle.

And they rose up early in the morning, and worshipped before Yahweh, and returned, and entered their own house, in Ramah, —and Elkanah knew Hannah his wife, and Yahweh remembered her.

20 Et dans le courant de l'année Hanna devint enceinte et enfanta un fils, et elle lui donna le nom de Samuel (L'Éternel exauce), car [dit-elle] je l'ai sollicité de l'Éternel.

And so it was, when the days had come round during which Hannah was with child, that she bare a son, —and called his name Samuel ["Heard of God"], Because, of Yahweh, I asked him.

21 Et le mari, Elkana, fit le pèlerinage avec toute sa maison pour offrir le sacrifice annuel, et accomplir son vœu;

And the man Elkanah, and all his house, went up, to offer unto Yahweh the yearly sacrifice, and [each] his own vow.

22 mais Hanna ne le fit pas; car elle dit à son mari: Lorsque l'enfant sera sevré, je le mènerai pour qu'il soit présenté à l'Éternel, et qu'il reste là pour toujours.

But, Hannah, went not up, —for she said to her husband—[Not] till the boy is weaned, then will I take him, and he shall appear before Yahweh, and abide there evermore.

23 Et Elkana, son mari, lui dit: Fais ce qui te semblera bon, et attends que tu l'aies sevré. Seulement que l'Éternel mette à effet sa parole! Sa femme resta donc et elle allaita son fils jusqu'au sevrage.

And Elkanah her husband said to her—Do what is good in thine own eyes, tarry until thou have weaned him, only may Yahweh establish his word! So the woman tarried, and nursed her son, until she weaned him.

24 Et quand elle l'eut sevré, elle l'amena avec elle, avec trois taureaux, et un épha de farine et une outre de vin, et elle l'introduisit dans la maison de l'Éternel à Silo. Or l'enfant était encore petit.

Then took she him up with her, when she had weaned him, with a bullock of three years old, and one ephah of meal, and a skin of wine, and took him to the house of Yahweh, at Shiloh, —the boy yet being young.

25 Et ils égorgèrent le taureau, et amenèrent l'enfant à Eli.

So they slew the bullock, —and took the boy in, unto Eli.

26 Et Hanna dit: Pardonne, mon Seigneur! par ta vie, mon Seigneur! je suis cette femme qui me tenais ici debout près de toi adressant ma prière à l'Éternel.

And she said—Pardon, my lord! By the life of thy soul, my lord, —I, am the woman who was standing near thee here, praying unto Yahweh:

27 C'est pour l'enfant ici présent que je le suppliais, et l'Éternel m'a accordé la requête que je lui présentais.

For this boy, I prayed, —And Yahweh hath given me my petition which I asked of him.

28 A mon tour je veux le donner en prêt à l'Éternel: qu'il reste toute sa vie prêté à l'Éternel. Et ils rendirent là leurs adorations à l'Éternel.

Hence, I also, have loaned him unto Yahweh, all the days that he liveth. He, is lent unto Yahweh. And he bowed down there, unto Yahweh.
