1 Et longtemps après, la parole de l'Éternel fut adressée à Élie, la troisième année, en ces termes: Va et te présente à Achab, puis je laisserai la pluie descendre sur la face de la terre.
After many days, the word of the Lord came to Elijah, in the third year, saying, “Go and show yourself to Ahab, so that I may grant rain upon the face of the earth.”
2 Alors Élie alla se présenter à Achab. Or la famine était extrême dans Samarie;
Therefore, Elijah went to show himself to Ahab. For there was a severe famine in Samaria.
3 et Achab manda Obadia, préfet du palais (or Obadia avait une très grande crainte de l'Éternel,
And Ahab called Obadiah, the manager of his household. Now Obadiah feared the Lord greatly.
4 et lorsque Jézabel extermina les prophètes de l'Éternel, Obadia recueillit cent prophètes et les cacha, cinquante hommes par grotte, et les fournit de pain et d'eau);
For when Jezebel was killing the prophets of the Lord, he took one hundred prophets, and concealed them, fifty and fifty, in caves. And he fed them with bread and water.
5 et Achab dit à Obadia: Va dans le pays à toutes les sources et à tous les courants d'eau, peut-être se trouvera-t-il quelque herbe pour faire vivre nos chevaux et nos mulets, et n'avoir pas à nous défaire d'une partie du bétail.
Then Ahab said to Obadiah, “Go into the land, to all fountains of water, and to all the valleys, for perhaps we will be able to find plants, and save the horses and mules, so that the beasts of burden may not perish entirely.”
6 Et ils se distribuèrent entre eux le pays pour le parcourir; Achab s'achemina par une voie seul, et Obadia s'achemina par l'autre voie, seul.
And they divided the regions among themselves, so that they might travel through them. Ahab went one way alone, and Obadiah went another way by himself.
7 Et comme Obadia était en route, voilà qu'Élie le rencontra; et le reconnaissant, Obadia se jeta la face contre terre et dit: Est-ce toi, mon seigneur Élie?
And while Obadiah was on the way, Elijah met him. And when he had recognized him, he fell on his face, and he said, “Are you not my lord Elijah?”
8 Et il lui répondit: Moi-même. Va, dis à ton maître: Voici Élie!
And he responded to him: “I am. Go and tell your lord that Elijah is here.”
9 Et il dit: En quoi ai-je péché que tu veuilles livrer ton serviteur aux mains d'Achab pour qu'il me fasse mourir?
And he said: “How have I sinned that you would deliver me, your servant, into the hand of Ahab, so that he would put me to death?
10 Par la vie de l'Éternel, ton Dieu, il n'est ni peuple, ni royaume où mon maître ne t'ait envoyé chercher, et quand on disait: Il n'est pas ici, le roi faisait jurer au royaume et au peuple qu'on ne te trouvait pas.
As the Lord your God lives, there is no nation or kingdom to which my lord has not sent, seeking you. And when all responded, ‘He is not here,’ he swore each kingdom and nation to an oath, because you were not found at all.
11 Et maintenant tu dis: Va, dis à ton maître: Voici Élie!
And now, you say to me, ‘Go and tell your lord that Elijah is here.’
12 et si je te quitte et que l'Esprit de l'Éternel te transporte j'ignore où, et que je vienne donner l'avis à Achab, et qu'il ne te trouve pas, alors il me fera mourir, et pourtant ton serviteur a craint l'Éternel dès sa jeunesse.
And when I will have departed from you, the Spirit of the Lord will transport you to a place that I do not know. And entering, I will report to Ahab. And he, not finding you, will put me to death. Yet your servant has feared the Lord from his infancy.
13 Mon seigneur n'a-t-il pas été informé de ce que j'ai fait lorsque Jézabel massacra les prophètes de l'Éternel, que je cachai cent hommes d'entre les prophètes de l'Éternel, cinquante par grotte, et les fournis de pain et d'eau?
Has it not been revealed to you, my lord, what I did when Jezebel was killing the prophets of the Lord: how I hid one hundred men from the prophets of the Lord, fifty and fifty, in caves, and how I fed them with bread and water?
14 Et maintenant tu dis: Va, dis à ton maître: Voici Élie! Il me fera mourir.
And now you say: ‘Go and tell your lord that Elijah is here,’ so that he may kill me!”
15 Mais Élie dit: Par la vie de l'Éternel des armées, aux ordres de qui je me tiens, aujourd'hui je me présenterai à lui.
And Elijah said, “As the Lord of hosts lives, before whose face I stand, this day I will appear to him.”
16 Alors Obadia alla au-devant d'Achab et lui fit rapport. Et Achab vint au-devant d'Élie.
Therefore, Obadiah went away to meet Ahab, and he reported to him. And Ahab went to meet Elijah.
17 Et à la vue d'Élie, Achab lui dit: Est-ce toi, perturbateur d'Israël?
And when he had seen him, he said, “Are you the one who is disturbing Israel?”
18 Et il répondit: Je ne suis point le perturbateur d'Israël, c'est toi au contraire et la maison de ton père, en désertant les commandements de l'Éternel, et quand tu as pris ton chemin après les Baals.
And he said: “I have not troubled Israel. But it is you, and the house of your father, who have abandoned the commandments of the Lord, and have followed the Baals.
19 Maintenant donc dépêche et convoque devant moi tout Israël au mont Carmel et les quatre cent cinquante prophètes de Baal et les quatre cents prophètes d'Astarté qui mangent à la table de Jézabel.
Yet truly now, send and gather to me all of Israel, on Mount Carmel, with the four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal, and the four hundred prophets of the sacred groves, who eat from the table of Jezebel.”
20 Et Achab dépêcha chez tous les enfants d'Israël et convoqua les prophètes au mont Carmel.
Ahab sent to all the sons of Israel, and he gathered together the prophets on mount Carmel.
21 Alors Élie s'avança vers le peuple entier et dit: Jusques à quand boiterez-vous sur les deux jarrets? Si l'Éternel est Dieu, suivez-le! Si c'est Baal, suivez-le. Et le peuple ne lui répondit mot.
Then Elijah, drawing near to all the people, said: “How long will you waver between two sides? If the Lord is God, follow him. But if Baal is, then follow him.” And the people did not respond a word to him.
22 Et Élie dit au peuple: Je suis resté seul prophète de l'Éternel, et de prophètes de Baal il y a quatre cent cinquante hommes.
And Elijah said again to the people: “I alone remain as a prophet of the Lord. But the prophets of Baal are four hundred and fifty men.
23 Qu'on nous procure deux taureaux, ils en choisiront l'un pour eux, puis le dépèceront et le placeront sur le bûcher, mais sans y mettre le feu; moi j'immolerai l'autre taureau et le placerai sur le bûcher, mais sans y mettre le feu.
Let two oxen be given to us. And let them choose one ox for themselves, and, cutting it into pieces, let them set it on the wood. But they may not place fire under it. And I will prepare the other ox, and set it on the wood. But I will not place fire under it.
24 Ensuite invoquez le nom de votre dieu et moi j'invoquerai le nom de l'Éternel, et que le dieu qui répondra par le feu, que celui-là soit Dieu! Et le peuple entier répondit: Bien parlé!
Call upon the names of your gods. And I will call on the name of my Lord. And the God who will have heeded with fire, let him be God.” And in response, all the people said, “Excellent proposition.”
25 Et Élie dit aux prophètes de Baal: Choisissez pour vous l'un des taureaux, et sacrifiez les premiers, car vous faites nombre, et invoquez le nom de votre dieu; mais ne mettez pas le feu.
Then Elijah said to the prophets of Baal: “Choose for yourselves one ox, and prepare it first. For you are many. And call on the names of your gods, but do not place fire under it.”
26 Et ils prirent le taureau laissé à leur choix, et l'immolèrent et invoquèrent le nom de Baal du matin à midi, en disant: Baal, réponds-nous! Mais pas un son, et personne qui réponde. Et ils marchaient en se balançant autour de l'autel qu'on avait élevé.
And when they had taken an ox, which he had given to them, they prepared it. And they called on the name of Baal, from morning even until midday, saying, “O Baal, heed us.” And there was no voice, nor did anyone respond. And so they leaped upon the altar that they had made.
27 Et à midi Élie les railla et dit: Invoquez à voix forte, car c'est un dieu; il est sans doute préoccupé; il est allé à l'écart; sans doute il est en voyage; peut-être sommeille-t-il; alors il se réveillera.
And when it was now midday, Elijah ridiculed them, saying: “Cry out with a louder voice. For he is a god, and perhaps he is talking, or at an inn, or on a journey, or certainly he may be asleep, and must be awakened.”
28 Et ils invoquèrent à voix forte, et ils se firent des incisions selon leur rite avec des poignards et avec des piques jusqu'à faire effusion de leur sang sur eux.
Then they cried out with a loud voice, and they cut themselves, in accord with their ritual, with knives and lancets, until they were entirely covered in blood.
29 Et quand midi fut passé, ils furent en frénésie jusqu'à l'oblation de l'offrande; mais pas un son et personne qui répondît et personne qui écoutât.
Then, after midday had passed, and they were prophesying, the time had arrived when the sacrifice is usually offered. And there was no voice heard, neither did anyone heed or respond to the praying.
30 Alors Élie s'adressa à tout le peuple: Approchez-vous de moi! Et le peuple entier s'approcha de lui; et il remit en état l'autel de l'Éternel, démoli.
Elijah said to all the people, “Draw near to me.” And as the people were drawing near to him, he repaired the altar of the Lord, which had been torn down.
31 Et Élie prit douze pierres d'après le nombre des Tribus des fils de Jacob, à qui la parole de l'Éternel avait été adressée en ces termes: Israël sera ton nom;
And he took twelve stones, in accord with the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of the Lord came, saying, “Israel shall be your name.”
32 et avec les pierres il construisit un autel au Nom de l'Éternel, et il pratiqua autour de l'autel une rigole de la dimension de deux émines de grain,
And he built from the stones an altar to the name of the Lord. And he made a trench for water, like two furrows of plowed land, all around the altar.
33 et il arrangea le bûcher, et il dépeça le taureau et il le plaça sur le bûcher.
And he arranged the wood, and he cut the ox into pieces, and he placed it on the wood.
34 Et il dit: Remplissez quatre brocs d'eau, que vous verserez sur l'holocauste et sur le bûcher. Puis il dit: Réitérez! Et ils réitérèrent. Puis il dit: Faites-le une troisième fois. Et ils le firent pour la troisième fois.
And he said, “Fill four containers with water, and pour it over the holocaust, and over the wood.” And again, he said, “Do this a second time.” And when they had done it a second time, he said, “Do it also a third time.” And they did so a third time.
35 Et l'eau circula autour de l'autel et l'on remplit aussi d'eau la rigole.
And the water was running down around the altar, and the pit of the trench was filled with water.
36 Et au moment de l'oblation de l'offrande, Élie, le prophète, s'avança et dit: Éternel, Dieu d'Abraham, d'Isaac et d'Israël, qu'il soit notoire aujourd'hui que tu es Dieu en Israël et que je suis ton serviteur et que c'est par ton ordre que j'ai fait toutes ces choses.
And when it was now time for the holocaust to be offered, the prophet Elijah, drawing near, said: “O Lord, God of Abraham, and Isaac, and Israel, reveal this day that you are the God of Israel, and that I am your servant, and that I have acted, in all these things, in accord with your precept.
37 Réponds-moi, Éternel, réponds-moi, afin que ce peuple reconnaisse que tu es l'Éternel, le Dieu, et que c'est toi qui, derrière eux, convertissais leur cœur.
Heed me, O Lord, heed me, so that this people may learn that you are the Lord God, and that you have converted their heart again.”
38 Alors le feu de l'Éternel descendit et consuma l'holocauste et le bûcher et les pierres et la terre, et il absorba aussi l'eau dans la rigole.
Then the fire of the Lord fell down and devoured the holocaust, and the wood, and the stones, and even the dust, and it absorbed the water that was in the trench.
39 Et à ce spectacle le peuple entier se jeta la face contre terre en disant: C'est l'Éternel qui est Dieu, l'Éternel qui est Dieu!
And when all the people had seen it, they fell upon their face, and they said: “The Lord himself is God! The Lord himself is God!”
40 Et Élie leur dit: Arrêtez les prophètes de Baal! que pas un d'eux n'échappe! Et ils les arrêtèrent et Élie les fit descendre dans le ravin du Kison et là il les immola.
And Elijah said to them, “Apprehend the prophets of Baal, and do not let even one of them escape.” And when they had apprehended them, Elijah led them down to the torrent Kishon, and he put them to death there.
41 Et Élie dit à Achab: Remonte, mange et bois! car j'entends le bruissement de la pluie.
And Elijah said to Ahab “Ascend; eat and drink. For there is the sound of an abundance of rain.”
42 Alors Achab remonta pour manger et boire. Et Élie gagna le sommet du Carmel, et il se prosterna contre terre, et mit son visage entre ses genoux.
Ahab ascended, so that he might eat and drink. But Elijah ascended to the top of Carmel, and bending down to the ground, he placed his face between his knees.
43 Et il dit à son valet: Monte donc et regarde dans la direction de la mer. Et il monta, et regarda et dit: Il n'y a rien. Et Élie dit: Répète sept fois la course.
And he said to his servant, “Ascend, and gaze out toward the sea.” And when he had ascended, and had contemplated, he said, “There is nothing.” And again, he said to him, “Return seven times.”
44 Et à la septième il dit: Voilà un petit nuage, comme la paume de la main d'un homme, qui surgit de la mer. Alors Élie dit: Monte et dis à Achab: Attelle et descends, afin que la pluie ne t'arrête pas.
And at the seventh time, behold, a little cloud ascended from the sea like the footstep of a man. And he said: “Ascend, and say to Ahab, ‘Yoke your chariot, and descend; otherwise, the rain may prevent you.’”
45 Et en un tour de main le ciel s'obscurcit, il y eut nuages et vent, puis une forte pluie, et Achab monta sur son char et gagna Jizréel.
And as he was turning himself this way and that, behold, the heavens were darkened, and there were clouds and wind, and a great rainstorm occurred. And so Ahab, going up, went away to Jezreel.
46 Et la main de l'Éternel poussa Élie, qui ceignit ses reins et courut en devançant Achab jusqu'à Jizréel.
And the hand of the Lord was upon Elijah. And cinching his waist, he ran before Ahab, until he arrived at Jezreel.
