1 Rois 12

1 Et Roboam se rendit à Sichem, parce que tout Israël était venu à Sichem pour le faire roi.

And Rehoboam went to Shechem: for all Israel were come to Shechem to make him king.

2 Et lorsque Jéroboam, fils de Nebat, qui se tenait encore en Egypte où il avait fui hors de la présence du Roi Salomon, apprit [la mort de Salomon], il revint d'Egypte.

And it came to pass, when Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who was yet in Egypt, heard of it, (for he was fled from the presence of king Solomon, and Jeroboam dwelled in Egypt; )

3 Alors on députa vers lui pour le mander, et Jéroboam arriva, et toute l'Assemblée d'Israël tint à Roboam ce langage:

That they sent and called him. And Jeroboam and all the congregation of Israel came, and spoke to Rehoboam, saying,

4 Ton père nous a chargés d'un joug onéreux, mais à présent, toi, allège le rigide service de ton père et le joug onéreux qu'il nous a imposé, et nous serons tes sujets.

Your father made our yoke grievous: now therefore make you the grievous service of your father, and his heavy yoke which he put on us, lighter, and we will serve you.

5 Et il leur dit: Retirez-vous pour trois jours encore, puis revenez auprès de moi. Et le peuple se retira.

And he said to them, Depart yet for three days, then come again to me. And the people departed.

6 Alors Roboam conféra avec les vieillards qui avaient été au service de Salomon, son père, de son vivant, et il leur dit: Quelle réponse me conseillez-vous de rendre à ce peuple?

And king Rehoboam consulted with the old men, that stood before Solomon his father while he yet lived, and said, How do you advise that I may answer this people?

7 Et ils lui parlèrent en ces termes: Si aujourd'hui tu accordes ce service à ce peuple, et si tu lui cèdes et l'exauces, et si tu leur adresses des paroles de bonté, ils resteront toujours à ton service.

And they spoke to him, saying, If you will be a servant to this people this day, and will serve them, and answer them, and speak good words to them, then they will be your servants for ever.

8 Mais il négligea le conseil que lui donnaient les vieillards, et il conféra avec les jeunes gens qui avaient grandi avec lui et étaient ses ministres.

But he forsook the counsel of the old men, which they had given him, and consulted with the young men that were grown up with him, and which stood before him:

9 Et il leur dit: Quelle réponse me conseillez-vous de rendre à ce peuple-là qui me tient ce langage: Allège le joug que ton père nous a imposé?

And he said to them, What counsel give you that we may answer this people, who have spoken to me, saying, Make the yoke which your father did put on us lighter?

10 Et les jeunes gens qui avaient grandi avec lui, lui parlèrent en ces termes: Ainsi parle à ce peuple qui t'a tenu ce langage et t'a dit: Ton père nous a chargés d'un joug onéreux, mais toi rends-le plus léger pour nous; ainsi parle-leur: Mon petit doigt est plus épais que la taille de mon père;

And the young men that were grown up with him spoke to him, saying, Thus shall you speak to this people that spoke to you, saying, Your father made our yoke heavy, but make you it lighter to us; thus shall you say to them, My little finger shall be thicker than my father’s loins.

11 si donc mon père vous a fait porter un joug onéreux, moi j'ajouterai encore à votre joug; si mon père vous a morigénés avec des lanières, moi je vous morigénerai avec des fouets à pointes.

And now whereas my father did lade you with a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke: my father has chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.

12 Et Jéroboam et tout le peuple se présentèrent à Roboam le troisième jour ensuite des paroles à eux adressées par le Roi: Revenez auprès de moi dans trois jours!

So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam the third day, as the king had appointed, saying, Come to me again the third day.

13 et le Roi répondit au peuple avec dureté, négligeant le conseil des vieillards, qui lui avait été donné par eux, et selon le conseil des jeunes il leur tint ce langage:

And the king answered the people roughly, and forsook the old men’s counsel that they gave him;

14 Mon père vous a chargés d'un joug pesant, mais moi j'y ajouterai encore, mon père vous a morigénés avec des lanières, mais moi je vous morigénerai avec des fouets à pointes.

And spoke to them after the counsel of the young men, saying, My father made your yoke heavy, and I will add to your yoke: my father also chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scorpions.

15 Ainsi le Roi n'exauça point le peuple; car ce fut une dispensation de l'Éternel pour la mise à effet de la parole que l'Éternel avait émise par l'organe d'Ahia, de Silo, à Jéroboam, fils de Nebat.

Why the king listened not to the people; for the cause was from the LORD, that he might perform his saying, which the LORD spoke by Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.

16 Et lorsque tous les Israélites virent que le Roi ne les exauçait pas, le peuple rendit au Roi sa réponse en ces termes: En quoi sommes-nous participants de David? Nous ne sommes point cohéritiers du fils d'Isaï. A tes tentes, Israël! Désormais pourvois à ta maison, David!

So when all Israel saw that the king listened not to them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse: to your tents, O Israel: now see to your own house, David. So Israel departed to their tents.

17 Et les Israélites regagnèrent leurs tentes. Et quant aux Israélites domiciliés dans les villes de Juda, Roboam régna sur eux.

But as for the children of Israel which dwelled in the cities of Judah, Rehoboam reigned over them.

18 Alors le Roi Roboam délégua Adoram, qui était préposé sur la corvée, mais il fut reçu à coups de pierres par tout Israël et il en mourut, et en toute hâte le Roi Roboam monta sur un char pour fuir à Jérusalem.

Then king Rehoboam sent Adoram, who was over the tribute; and all Israel stoned him with stones, that he died. Therefore king Rehoboam made speed to get him up to his chariot, to flee to Jerusalem.

19 C'est ainsi qu'Israël s'est détaché de la maison de David jusqu'à ce jour.

So Israel rebelled against the house of David to this day.

20 Et à la nouvelle du retour de Jéroboam tous les Israélites par députation le mandèrent à l'Assemblée, et ils l'établirent Roi de tout Israël, et il n'y eut plus à la suite de la maison de David que la Tribu de Juda seule.

And it came to pass, when all Israel heard that Jeroboam was come again, that they sent and called him to the congregation, and made him king over all Israel: there was none that followed the house of David, but the tribe of Judah only.

21 Et Roboam rentré à Jérusalem convoqua toute la maison de Juda et la Tribu de Benjamin, cent quatre-vingt mille hommes d'élite portant les armes, pour attaquer la maison d'Israël afin de reconquérir le royaume à Roboam, fils de Salomon.

And when Rehoboam was come to Jerusalem, he assembled all the house of Judah, with the tribe of Benjamin, an hundred and fourscore thousand chosen men, which were warriors, to fight against the house of Israel, to bring the kingdom again to Rehoboam the son of Solomon.

22 Alors la parole de Dieu fut adressée à Semaïa, homme de Dieu, en ces termes:

But the word of God came to Shemaiah the man of God, saying,

23 Parle à Roboam, fils de Salomon, Roi de Juda, et à toute la maison de Juda et de Benjamin et au reste du peuple en ces termes:

Speak to Rehoboam, the son of Solomon, king of Judah, and to all the house of Judah and Benjamin, and to the remnant of the people, saying,

24 Ainsi parle l'Éternel: Ne vous mettez point en campagne et n'attaquez point vos frères, les enfants d'Israël! rentrez chacun chez vous, car cet événement a lieu de par Moi. Et ils obéirent à la parole de l'Éternel et ils s'en retournèrent conformément à la parole de l'Éternel.

Thus says the LORD, You shall not go up, nor fight against your brothers the children of Israel: return every man to his house; for this thing is from me. They listened therefore to the word of the LORD, and returned to depart, according to the word of the LORD.

25 Et Jéroboam édifia Sichem sur la montagne d'Éphraïm et il y résida, puis il en sortit et édifia Pnuel.

Then Jeroboam built Shechem in mount Ephraim, and dwelled therein; and went out from there, and built Penuel.

26 Et Jéroboam disait en son cœur: Maintenant le royaume retournera à la maison de David,

And Jeroboam said in his heart, Now shall the kingdom return to the house of David:

27 si ce peuple s'en va offrir des sacrifices dans la Maison de l'Éternel à Jérusalem, et le cœur de ce peuple retournera à leur Souverain, à Roboam, Roi de Juda, et ils me feront mourir, et retourneront à Roboam, Roi de Juda.

If this people go up to do sacrifice in the house of the LORD at Jerusalem, then shall the heart of this people turn again to their lord, even to Rehoboam king of Judah, and they shall kill me, and go again to Rehoboam king of Judah.

28 Alors le Roi se consulta, puis il fit deux veaux d'or, et il dit au peuple: Vous êtes assez montés à Jérusalem! Israël, voici ton Dieu qui t'a retiré du pays d'Egypte.

Whereupon the king took counsel, and made two calves of gold, and said to them, It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem: behold your gods, O Israel, which brought you up out of the land of Egypt.

29 Et il les plaça, l'un à Béthel, l'autre à Dan.

And he set the one in Bethel, and the other put he in Dan.

30 Et ce fait devint une cause de péché, et le peuple allait en pèlerinage vers l'un jusqu'à Dan.

And this thing became a sin: for the people went to worship before the one, even to Dan.

31 Il construisit aussi un temple sur les hauteurs, et créa des prêtres tirés de la masse du peuple et n'appartenant point à la descendance de Lévi.

And he made an house of high places, and made priests of the lowest of the people, which were not of the sons of Levi.

32 Et Jéroboam institua une fête au huitième mois, le quinzième jour du mois, comme la fête qui existait en Juda, et il offrit des sacrifices sur l'autel. Et à Béthel il s'y prit ainsi: il fit des sacrifices aux veaux qu'il avait fabriqués, et il établit à Béthel les prêtres des tertres qu'il avait élevés,

And Jeroboam ordained a feast in the eighth month, on the fifteenth day of the month, like to the feast that is in Judah, and he offered on the altar. So did he in Bethel, sacrificing to the calves that he had made: and he placed in Bethel the priests of the high places which he had made.

33 et il monta à l'autel qu'il avait érigé à Béthel, le quinzième jour du huitième mois, jour qu'il avait imaginé en son cœur et auquel il fixa une fête pour les enfants d'Israël, et il monta à l'autel pour encenser.

So he offered on the altar which he had made in Bethel the fifteenth day of the eighth month, even in the month which he had devised of his own heart; and ordained a feast to the children of Israel: and he offered on the altar, and burnt incense.
