1 Or David était vieux, avancé en âge, et on le couvrait de vêtements, mais il ne se réchauffait point.

Now, King David, was old, advanced in days, —and they covered him with clothes, but he gat no heat.

2 Et ses serviteurs lui dirent: Que l'on cherche à mon Seigneur le Roi une jeune fille, une vierge, pour faire le service du Roi et le soigner et dormir entre ses bras, afin que mon Seigneur se réchauffe.

Wherefore his servants said unto him—Let there be sought for my lord the king, a young woman—a virgin, so shall she stand before the king, that she may become his companion, —and she shall lie in thy bosom, and my lord the king shall get, heat.

3 Et l'on se mit en quête d'une jeune fille, belle, dans tout le territoire d'Israël, et l'on trouva Abisag, de Sunem, et on l'amena au Roi.

So they sought a fair young woman, throughout all the bounds of Israel, —and found Abishag, the Shunammite, and brought her in, unto the king.

4 Or la jeune fille était extrêmement belle. Et elle soigna le Roi et le servit, mais il ne la connut point.

Now, the young woman, was exceeding fair, —so she became unto the king a companion, and ministered unto him, but, the king, knew her not.

5 Cependant Adonia, fils de Haggith, se mit en avant et dit: C'est moi qui serai Roi! Et il se procura un char et des cavaliers et cinquante hommes pour le précéder comme coureurs.

And, Adonijah son of Haggith, exalted himself, saying—I, will be king. Therefore prepared he for himself chariots and horsemen, and fifty men to run before him.

6 Et son père durant toute sa vie ne lui avait jamais fait de la peine en disant: Pourquoi agis-tu ainsi? Et il était aussi très beau de figure, et [sa mère] l'avait enfanté après Absalom.

Now his father had not displeased him all his days, by saying—Why, thus, hast thou done? Moreover also, he, was of exceeding handsome appearance, and, him, did his mother bear, after Absolom.

7 Et il entra en pourparler avec Joab, fils de Tseruïa, et avec le Prêtre Abiathar qui le suivaient comme auxiliaires.

So then he had speech with Joab, son of Zeruiah, and with Abiathar the priest, —and they gave help, following Adonijah.

8 Alors le Prêtre Tsadoc, et Benaïa, fils de Joïada, et Nathan, le prophète, et Siméï et Réï et les héros de David ne furent point les partisans d'Adonia.

But, Zadok the priest, and Benaiah son of Jehoiada, and Nathan the prophet, and Shimei, and Rei, and the mighty men who belonged to David, were not with Adonijah.

9 Et Adonia tua des moutons et des bœufs et des veaux gras près de la pierre Sohéleth qui est à côté de la Fontaine du Foulon, et il convia tous ses frères fils du Roi, et tous les hommes de Juda au service du Roi.

And Adonijah sacrificed sheep and oxen and heifers, near the stone of Zoheleth, which is beside En-rogel, —and invited all his brethren, sons of the king, and all the men of Judah, servants of the king;

10 Mais il ne convia point Nathan, le prophète, ni Benaïa, ni les héros, ni Salomon, son frère.

but, Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah, and the mighty men, and Solomon his brother, he invited not.

11 Alors Nathan s'aboucha avec Bathséba, mère de Salomon, et dit: N'as-tu pas appris l'avènement d'Adonia, fils de Haggith, à la royauté? Et notre Seigneur, David, l'ignore.

Then spake Nathan unto Bath-sheba mother of Solomon, saying—Hast thou not heard that Adonijah son of Haggith hath become king, and, our lord David, knoweth it not?

12 Eh bien! maintenant reçois de moi un conseil pour mettre en sûreté ta vie et la vie de ton fils Salomon!

Now, therefore, come; let me give thee counsel, I pray thee, —so shalt thou rescue thine own life, and the life of thy son, Solomon.

13 Va et entre chez le Roi David et lui dis: N'as-tu pas, ô Roi, mon Seigneur, fait à ta servante un serment et cette déclaration: Salomon, ton fils, sera Roi après moi, et il s'assiéra sur mon trône? Pourquoi donc Adonia est-il Roi?

Go, and get thee in unto King David, and thou shalt say unto him—Didst not, thou thyself, my lord O king, swear unto thy handmaid, saying—Solomon thy son, shall become king after me, yea, he, shall sit upon my throne? Why, then, hath, Adonijah, become king?

14 Voici, pendant que tu seras encore là en pourparler avec le Roi, moi, j'entrerai après toi, et je compléterai ton discours.

Lo! while thou art yet speaking there with the king, I also, will come in after thee, and confirm thy words.

15 Bathséba entra donc chez le Roi dans l'appartement. Or le Roi était très vieux, et Abisag, la Sunamite, servait le Roi.

So Bath-sheba went in unto the king, into the chamber, now, the king, was very old, —and Abishag the Shunammite, was ministering unto the king.

16 Et Bathséba s'inclina et se prosterna devant le Roi. Et le Roi dit: Qu'est-ce qui t'amène?

And Bath-sheba bowed, and did homage unto the king, —and the king said—What aileth thee?

17 Et elle lui dit: Mon Seigneur, tu as fait par l'Éternel, ton Dieu, à ta servante ce serment: Salomon, ton fils, sera Roi après moi, et c'est lui qui s'assiéra sur mon trône;

And she said unto him—My lord, thou thyself, didst swear by Yahweh thy God, unto thy handmaid, Assuredly, Solomon thy son, shall become king after me, —yea, he, shall sit upon my throne.

18 et maintenant voilà que Adonia est Roi; et cependant, ô Roi, mon Seigneur, tu l'ignores. Et il a tué des bœufs et des veaux gras et des moutons en quantité;

But, now, lo! Adonijah, hath become king; now, therefore, my lord, O king, thou knowest it not:

19 et il a convié tous les fils du Roi, et le Prêtre Abiathar et Joab, le chef de l'armée; mais à Salomon, ton serviteur, il n'a point adressé d'invitation.

and he hath sacrificed oxen and heifers and sheep, in abundance, and hath invited all the sons of the king, and Abiathar the priest, and Joab general of the army, —but, Solomon thy servant, hath he not invited.

20 Et sur toi, ô Roi, mon Seigneur, sont fixés les yeux de tout Israël afin que tu déclares qui doit s'asseoir sur le trône de mon Seigneur le Roi après lui.

Thou, therefore, my lord, O king, the eyes of all Israel, are upon thee, —to tell them, who shall sit upon the throne of my lord the king, after him.

21 Et il adviendra que, lorsque mon Seigneur le Roi ira reposer avec ses pères, nous serons, moi et mon fils Salomon, traités comme coupables.

Otherwise it shall come to pass, when my lord the king shall sleep with his fathers, then shall I and my son Solomon be counted, offenders.

22 Et voilà que comme elle parlait encore avec le Roi, Nathan, le prophète, arriva.

And lo! while yet she was speaking with the king, Nathan the prophet, came in.

23 Et on l'annonça au Roi en ces termes: Voici Nathan, le prophète. Et il se présenta devant le Roi, et il se prosterna devant le Roi le visage contre terre.

So they told the king, saying, Lo! Nathan the prophet! And, when he had come in before the king, he bowed himself down to the king with his face to the ground.

24 Et Nathan parla: Mon Seigneur le Roi, tu as donc dit: Adonia sera Roi après moi, et c'est lui qui s'assiéra sur mon trône!

Then said Nathan—My lord, O king, hast, thou, said, Adonijah, shall become king after me, —yea, he, shall sit upon my throne?

25 car aujourd'hui il est descendu et a tué des bœufs et des veaux gras et des moutons en quantité, et a convié tous les fils du Roi et les chefs de l'armée et le Prêtre Abiathar, et les voilà mangeant et buvant devant lui et disant: Vive le Roi Adonia!

For he hath gone down to-day, and hath sacrificed oxen and heifers and sheep, in abundance, and hath invited all the sons of the king, and the generals of the army, and Abiathar the priest, and, there they are—eating and drinking before him, —and they have said—Long live King Adonijah!

26 Mais à moi qui suis ton serviteur et au Prêtre Tsadoc et à Benaïa, fils de Joïada, et à Salomon, ton serviteur, il n'a point adressé d'invitation.

But, me, even me thy servant, and Zadok the priest, and Benaiah son of Jehoiada, and Solomon thy servant, hath he not invited.

27 Est-ce que ce serait de par mon Seigneur le Roi que telle chose aurait lieu, sans que tu aies notifié à ton serviteur qui doit s'asseoir sur le trône de mon Seigneur le Roi après lui?

If, of my lord the king, this thing had been brought to pass, then wouldest thou not have made known unto thy servant, who should sit upon the throne of my lord the king, after him?

28 Alors le Roi David répondit et dit: Mandez-moi Bathséba! Et elle parut devant le Roi et se présenta au Roi.

Then responded King David, and said, Call me Bath-sheba. So she came in before the king, and stood before the king.

29 Et le Roi prononça le serment en ces termes: Par la vie de l'Éternel qui a délivré mon âme de toutes les détresses!

And the king sware, and said, —By the life of Yahweh, who hath redeemed my life out of every strait,

30 ainsi que je te l'ai juré par l'Éternel, Dieu d'Israël, quand j'ai dit: Salomon, ton fils, sera Roi après moi, et c'est lui qui me remplacera sur le trône, ainsi veux-je l'effectuer aujourd'hui!

even as I sware unto thee by Yahweh, God of Israel, saying, Assuredly, Solomon thy son, shall become king after me, yea, he, shall sit upon my throne, in my stead, even so, will I do this day.

31 Alors Bathséba s'inclina le visage contre terre et se prosterna devant le Roi et dit: Vive mon Seigneur le roi David éternellement!

Then Bath-sheba bowed with her face to the ground, and did homage unto the king, —and said—Let my lord, King David, live to times age-abiding!

32 Et le Roi David dit: Mandez-moi le Prêtre Tsadoc et le prophète Nathan, et Benaïa, fils de Joïada! Et ils se présentèrent au Roi.

Then said King David—Call me Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah son of Jehoiada. And they came in before the king.

33 Et le Roi leur dit: Prenez avec vous les serviteurs de votre maître, et donnez à mon fils Salomon pour monture mon propre mulet et faites-le descendre à Gihon.

Then said the king unto them—Take ye with you the servants of your lord, and cause Solomon my son to ride upon the mule which pertaineth unto myself, —and bring him down unto Gihon;

34 Et que l'onction lui soit conférée là par le Prêtre Tsadoc et le prophète Nathan, pour l'établir Roi d'Israël! et sonnez de la trompette et dites: Vive le Roi Salomon!

then shall Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet anoint him there as king over Israel, —and ye shall blow with the horn, and say—Long live King Solomon!

35 Et remontez à sa suite, et qu'il vienne et se place sur mon trône, et c'est lui qui me succédera dans la royauté, et je l'ordonne Prince d'Israël et de Juda.

Then shall ye come up after him, and he shall enter, and sit upon my throne, yea, he, shall become king in my stead; even, him, have I charged to become leader, over Israel, and over Judah.

36 Alors Benaïa, fils de Joïada, répondit au Roi et dit: Ainsi soit-il! Ainsi prononce l'Éternel, le Dieu de mon Seigneur, du Roi.

Then did Benaiah son of Jehoiada make response unto the king, and say—Amen! so, say Yahweh, God of my lord the king.

37 Que de même que l'Éternel a été avec mon Seigneur le Roi, de même Il soit avec Salomon, et donne à son trône plus de grandeur qu'au trône de mon Seigneur le Roi David!

As Yahweh hath been with my lord the king, so, let him he with Solomon, —and make his throne greater than the throne of my lord, King David.

38 En conséquence le Prêtre Tsadoc et le prophète Nathan, et Benaïa, fils de Joïada, et les satellites et les coureurs descendirent et placèrent Salomon sur le mulet du Roi David, et le menèrent à Gihon.

So Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah son of Jehoiada, with the Cherethites and the Pelethites, went down, and caused Solomon to ride upon the mule of King David, —and they escorted him to Gihon.

39 Et le Prêtre Tsadoc prit la corne d'huile dans la Tente, et il oignit Salomon, et on sonna de la trompette et tout le peuple dit: Vive le Roi Salomon!

Then took Zadok the priest, the horn of oil out of the Tent, and anointed Solomon, —and they blew with a [ram’s] horn, and all the people said, Long live King Solomon!

40 Et tout le peuple monta à sa suite, et tout le peuple formait des concerts de flûtes, et ils se livraient aux transports d'une grande joie, à faire éclater la terre par leurs acclamations.

And all the people came up after him, the people themselves also, playing with flutes, and rejoicing with great joy, —so that the earth rent with the sound of them.

41 Et Adonia entendit, et tous les convives avec lui; or ils étaient a la fin du banquet, et Joab distingua le son de la trompette et dit: Pourquoi cette clameur dans la ville en rumeur?

And Adonijah, and all the guests who were with him, heard it, just as, they, had made an end of eating, —and, when Joab heard the sound of a horn, he said—Wherefore the noise of the city, in tumult?

42 Il parlait encore que voici venir Jonathan, fils du Prêtre Abiathar; et Adonia dit: Viens! tu es un brave, et tu nous donneras de bonnes nouvelles!

While yet he was speaking, lo! Jonathan son of Abiathar the priest, came in, —and Adonijah said—Come in, for, a worthy man, thou art, and, good tidings, dost thou bring.

43 Mais Jonathan répondit et dit à Adonia: Au contraire! notre Seigneur le Roi David a fait Salomon Roi.

But Jonathan responded and said to Adonijah, —Of a truth, our lord, King David, hath made, Solomon, king.

44 Et le Roi a envoyé avec lui le Prêtre Tsadoc et le prophète Nathan et Benaïa, fils de Joïada, et les satellites et les coureurs et ils lui ont donné pour monture le mulet du Roi,

And the king hath sent with him—Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah son of Jehoiada, with the Cherethites, and the Pelethites, —and they have caused him to ride upon the mule of the king;

45 et le Prêtre Tsadoc et le prophète Nathan l'ont oint comme Roi à Gihon, et de là sont remontés joyeux, et la ville est en rumeur; c'est le bruit que vous entendez.

and Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet have anointed him king, in Gihon, and they went up from thence rejoicing, so that the city rang again, —That, is the noise ye have heard.

46 Et de plus Salomon s'est assis sur le trône royal,

Moreover also, Solomon hath taken his seat upon the throne of the kingdom.

47 et de plus les serviteurs du Roi sont entrés pour féliciter notre Seigneur le Roi David en disant: Que ton Dieu rende le nom de Salomon plus beau que le tien, et son trône plus éminent que ton trône!… et le Roi s'est prosterné sur son lit,

Moreover also, the servants of the king have been in, to bless our lord King David, saying—Thy God make the name of Solomon better than thy name, and make his throne greater than thy throne, —And the king bowed himself upon his bed.

48 et de plus le Roi a prononcé ces paroles: Béni soit l'Éternel, Dieu d'Israël, qui en ce jour m'a accordé quelqu'un pour s'asseoir sur mon trône, et m'en a rendu témoin!

Moreover also, thus and thus, hath said the king, —Blessed be Yahweh, God of Israel, who hath given, to-day, one to sit upon my throne, mine own eyes also beholding it.

49 Alors tous les convives d'Adonia prirent l'épouvante et se levèrent et s'en allèrent chacun de son côté.

Then trembled and rose up, all Adonijah’s guests, —and departed, every man his own way.

50 Mais Adonia eut peur de Salomon, et s'étant levé il alla saisir les cornes de l'Autel.

Adonijah also, feared because of Solomon, —and rose and went, and caught hold of the horns of the altar.

51 Et l'avis en fut porté à Salomon en ces termes: Voilà qu'Adonia a peur du Roi Salomon, et voilà qu'il a saisi les cornes de l'Autel, disant: Qu'aujourd'hui le Roi Salomon me fasse le serment de ne pas mettre à mort son serviteur par l'épée.

And it was told Solomon, saying, Lo! Adonijah, feareth King Solomon, —lo! therefore, he hath laid hold of the horns of the altar, saying, Let King Solomon swear unto me at once that he will not put his servant to death with the sword.

52 Alors Salomon dit: S'il veut être un brave homme, pas un seul de ses cheveux ne tombera en terre; mais s'il est pris en flagrant délit, il est mort.

Then said Solomon, If he will be a man of worth, there shall not one hair of him fall to the earth, —but, if mischief be found in him, then shall he die.

53 Là-dessus le Roi Salomon envoya des gens pour le faire descendre de l'Autel, et il se présenta et il se prosterna devant le Roi Salomon et Salomon lui dit: Va dans ta maison.

So King Solomon sent, and brought him down from the altar, and he came in, and bowed himself down to King Solomon, —and Solomon said unto him—Go to thine own house.
