1 Chroniques 21
1 Et Satan se dressa contre Israël et incita David à dénombrer Israël.
And Satan stood up against Israel, and moved David to number Israel.
2 Alors David dit à Joab et aux chefs du peuple: Allez, comptez les Israélites de Béerséba à Dan et faites-moi rapport, afin que j'en sache le nombre.
And David said to Joab and to the princes of the people: 'Go, number Israel from Beersheba even to Dan; and bring me word, that I may know the sum of them.'
3 Et Joab dit: Puisse l'Éternel augmenter le peuple au centuple de ce qu'il est! Ne sont-ils pas tous, ô roi, mon seigneur, sujets de mon seigneur? Pourquoi mon seigneur a-t-il un tel désir? Pourquoi, mettre Israël en état de délit?
And Joab said: 'The LORD make His people a hundred times so many more as they are; but, my lord the king, are they not all my lord's servants? why doth my lord require this thing? why will he be a cause of guilt unto Israel?'
4 Mais la parole du roi prévalut contre Joab, qui partit, fit la tournée de tout Israël et revint à Jérusalem.
Nevertheless the king's word prevailed against Joab. Wherefore Joab departed and went throughout all Israel, and came to Jerusalem.
5 Alors Joab rendit compte à David du recensement du peuple. Et dans tout Israël il y avait un million cent mille hommes tirant l'épée, et en Juda quatre cent soixante-dix mille hommes tirant l'épée.
And Joab gave up the sum of the numbering of the people unto David. And all they of Israel were a thousand thousand and a hundred thousand men that drew sword; and Judah was four hundred three-score and ten thousand men that drew sword.
6 Mais il ne fit pas la revue de Lévi et de Benjamin parmi eux; car l'ordre du roi était une abomination pour Joab.
But Levi and Benjamin he did not number among them; for the king's word was abominable to Joab.
7 Et la mesure déplut à Dieu qui frappa Israël.
And God was displeased with this thing; therefore He smote Israel.
8 Et David dit à Dieu: J'ai gravement péché en faisant cette chose-là! Et maintenant, oh! pardonne la faute de ton serviteur, car j'ai très follement agi.
And David said unto God: 'I have sinned greatly, in that I have done this thing; but now, put away, I beseech Thee, the iniquity of Thy servant; for I have done very foolishly.'
9 Et l'Éternel parla à Gad, Voyant de David, en ces termes:
And the LORD spoke unto Gad, David's seer, saying:
10 Va et parle à David en ces termes: Ainsi parle l'Éternel: Je te propose trois choses, choisis-en une, afin que je l'exécute sur toi.
'Go and speak unto David, saying: Thus saith the LORD: I offer thee three things; choose thee one of them, that I may do it unto thee.'
11 Et Gad vint trouver David et lui dit: Ainsi parle l'Éternel:
So Gad came to David, and said unto him: 'Thus saith the LORD: Take which thou wilt:
12 Accepte, ou pour trois ans la famine, ou pour trois mois la fuite devant tes adversaires sous l'atteinte de l'épée de tes ennemis, ou pour trois jours l'épée de l'Éternel et la peste dans le pays et l'Ange de l'Éternel répandant le carnage dans toutes les limites d'Israël; vois donc quelle réponse je dois rendre à Celui qui m'envoie.
either three years of famine; or three months to be swept away before thy foes, while the sword of thine enemies overtaketh thee; or else three days the sword of the LORD, even pestilence in the land, and the angel of the LORD destroying throughout all the borders of Israel. Now therefore consider what answer I shall return to Him that sent me.'
13 Alors David dit à Gad: Je suis fort angoissé!…, oh! que je tombe par la main de l'Éternel, car sa miséricorde est infinie; mais que je ne tombe pas par une main d'homme!
And David said unto Gad: 'I am in a great strait; let me fall now into the hand of the LORD, for very great are His mercies; and let me not fall into the hand of man.'
14 Et l'Éternel infligea une peste à Israël, et il périt dans Israël soixante-dix mille hommes.
So the LORD sent a pestilence upon Israel; and there fell of Israel seventy thousand men.
15 Et Dieu envoya un Ange dans Jérusalem pour la ravager, et pendant qu'il ravageait, l'Éternel était témoin, et Il eut regret du désastre et dit à l'Ange destructeur: Assez! ramène ta main. Or l'Ange de l'Éternel se tenait près de l'aire d'Ornan le Jébusite.
And God sent an angel unto Jerusalem to destroy it; and as he was about to destroy, the LORD beheld, and He repented Him of the evil, and said to the destroying angel: 'It is enough; now stay thy hand.' And the angel of the LORD was standing by the threshing-floor of Ornan the Jebusite.
16 Et David levant les yeux vit l'Ange de l'Éternel debout entre la terre et le ciel, ayant en main son glaive nu étendu sur Jérusalem. Alors David et les Anciens, couverts de cilices, tombèrent la face contre terre.
And David lifted up his eyes, and saw the angel of the LORD standing between the earth and the heaven, having a drawn sword in his hand stretched out over Jerusalem. Then David and the elders, clothed in sackcloth, fell upon their faces.
17 Et David dit à Dieu: N'est-ce pas moi qui ai ordonné le dénombrement du peuple? C'est donc moi qui suis le coupable et qui ai forfait; mais ceux-ci, le troupeau, qu'ont-ils fait? Éternel, mon Dieu, oh! que ta main se dirige sur moi et la maison de mon père, mais pas sur ton peuple, pour frapper.
And David said unto God: 'Is it not I that commanded the people to be numbered? even I it is that have sinned and done very wickedly; but these sheep, what have they done? let Thy hand, I pray Thee, O LORD my God, be against me, and against my father's house; but not against Thy people, that they should be plagued.'
18 Cependant l'Ange de l'Éternel dit à Gad de dire à David, que David eût à monter pour ériger un autel à l'Éternel sur l'aire d'Ornan le Jébusite.
Then the angel of the LORD commanded Gad to say to David, that David should go up, and rear an altar unto the LORD in the threshing-floor of Ornan the Jebusite.
19 Et David monta suivant la parole de Gad, qu'il avait dite au nom de l'Éternel.
And David went up at the saying of Gad, which he spoke in the name of the LORD.
20 Et Ornan s'étant retourné vit l'Ange, et lui et ses quatre fils avec lui se cachèrent. Or Ornan foulait alors le froment.
And Ornan turned back, and saw the angel; and his four sons that were with him hid themselves. Now Ornan was threshing wheat.
21 Et David arriva chez Ornan; et Ornan ayant regardé vit David, puis sortit de l'aire et se prosterna devant David la face contre terre.
And as David came to Ornan, Ornan looked and saw David, and went out of the threshing-floor, and bowed down to David with his face to the ground.
22 Et David dit à Ornan: Cède-moi l'emplacement de ton aire pour que j'y élève un autel à l'Éternel, cède-le-moi pour la valeur totale, afin que le fléau soit éloigné de dessus le peuple.
Then David said to Ornan: 'Give me the place of this threshing-floor, that I may build thereon an altar unto the LORD; for the full price shalt thou give it me; that the plague may be stayed from the people.'
23 Et Ornan dit à David: Accepte-le, et que mon seigneur le roi fasse ce qui lui semblera bon; voici, je donne les taureaux pour l'holocauste et les traîneaux pour le bûcher et le blé pour l'offrande; je donne tout cela.
And Ornan said unto David: 'Take it to thee, and let my lord the king do that which is good in his eyes; lo, I give thee the oxen for burnt-offerings, and the threshing-instruments for wood, and the wheat for the meal-offering; I give it all'
24 Et le roi David dit à Ornan: Non! mais je veux l'acquérir pour la valeur totale, car je n'offrirai point à l'Éternel ce qui est à toi et ne sacrifierai point un holocauste qui ne coûte rien.
And king David said to Ornan: 'Nay, but I will verily buy it for the full price; for I will not take that which is thine for the LORD, nor offer a burnt-offering without cost.'
25 David paya donc à Ornan pour l'emplacement, en sicles d'or, six cents sicles pesant.
So David gave to Ornan for the place six hundred shekels of gold by weight.
26 Et David y éleva un autel à l'Éternel et offrit des holocaustes et des sacrifices pacifiques et invoqua l'Éternel, qui lui répondit par le feu du ciel qui vint sur l'autel de l'holocauste.
And David built there an altar unto the LORD, and offered burnt-offerings and peace-offerings, and called upon the LORD; and He answered him from heaven by fire upon the altar of burnt-offering.
27 Et l'Éternel parla à l'Ange, qui remit son épée dans le fourreau.
And the LORD commanded the angel; and he put up his sword back into the sheath thereof.
28 Dans le même temps David voyant que l'Éternel l'exauçait à l'aire d'Ornan, le Jébusite, y offrit des sacrifices.
At that time, when David saw that the LORD had answered him in the threshing-floor of Ornan the Jebusite, then he sacrificed there.
29 Or la Résidence de l'Éternel que Moïse avait faite dans le désert, et l'autel des holocaustes étaient en ce temps sur la hauteur de Gabaon,
For the tabernacle of the LORD, which Moses made in the wilderness, and the altar of burnt-offering, were at that time in the high place at Gibeon.
30 mais David n'osait s'y présenter pour chercher Dieu, parce qu'il avait pris l'épouvante en face de l'épée de l'Ange de l'Éternel.
But David could not go before it to inquire of God; for he was terrified because of the sword of the angel of the LORD.
