Job 4
1 Alors Éliphaz, de Théman, prit la parole, et dit:
Then answered Eliphaz the Themanite, and said,
2 Si l'on tente de te parler, te fâcheras-tu? Mais qui pourrait retenir ses paroles?
If we essay to address a word to thee, wilt thou be wearied? yet who is able to refrain from speaking?
3 Voici, tu as souvent instruit les autres, et tu as fortifié les mains affaiblies;
Behold, thou hast [ere this] corrected many, and weak hands thou wast wont to strengthen.
4 Tes paroles ont relevé ceux qui chancelaient, et tu as raffermi les genoux qui pliaient.
Him that stumbled thy words used to uphold, and to sinking knees thou gavest vigor.
5 Et maintenant que le malheur t'arrive, tu te fâches; et parce qu'il t'a atteint, tu es tout éperdu!
Yet now, when it cometh to thee, thou art wearied: it toucheth even thee, and thou art terrified.
6 Ta piété ne fait-elle pas ta confiance? Ton espérance, n'est-ce pas l'intégrité de tes voies?
Is not then thy fear of God still thy confidence, thy hope equal to the integrity of thy ways?
7 Cherche dans ta mémoire; quel est l'innocent qui a péri, et où des justes ont-ils été exterminés?
Remember, I pray thee, who ever perished, being innocent? or where were the righteous destroyed?
8 Pour moi, j'ai vu que ceux qui labourent l'iniquité et qui sèment la peine, la moissonnent.
Even as I have seen, that those who plough wrong-doing, and sow trouble, have to reap the same.
9 Ils périssent par le souffle de Dieu, et ils sont consumés par le vent de sa colère.
Before the breathing of God they perish, and before the breath of his nostrils they come to their end.
10 Le rugissement du lion, le cri du grand lion cesse, et les dents du lionceau sont anéanties;
The roaring of the lion, and the voice of the fierce lion, and the teeth of the young lions, are broken.
11 Le lion périt faute de proie, et les petits de la lionne sont dispersés.
The old lion perisheth for lack of prey, and the whelps of the lioness have to scatter themselves abroad.
12 Une parole m'est furtivement arrivée, et mon oreille en a saisi le murmure.
But to me a word came by stealth, and my ear took in a scarcely perceptible whisper thereof.
13 Au milieu de mes pensées, pendant les visions de la nuit, quand un profond sommeil tombe sur les humains,
In intense thoughts out of visions of the night, when deep sleep falleth on men:
14 Une frayeur et un tremblement me saisirent, et effrayèrent tous mes os.
Dread came over me, with trembling, and it caused all my bones to shudder.
15 Un esprit passa devant moi, et fit hérisser le poil de ma chair.
Then flitted a spirit past before my face; the hair of my body stood up:
16 Il se tint là et je ne reconnus pas son visage; une figure était devant mes yeux. Il y eut un silence; et j'entendis une voix:
It stood still, but I could not recognize its form; a figure was before my eyes, a slight whisper, then a [louder] voice I heard, saying,
17 “L'homme sera-t-il juste devant Dieu? L'homme sera-t-il pur devant celui qui l'a fait?
Can a mortal be more righteous than God? or can a man be more pure than his Maker?
18 Voici, il ne se fie pas à ses serviteurs, il trouve des défauts à ses anges.
Behold, in his servants he putteth no trust, and his angels he chargeth with folly:
19 Combien plus chez ceux qui habitent des maisons d'argile, qui ont leurs fondements dans la poussière, qu'on écrase comme des vermisseaux!
How much less in those that dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, who are crushed till they come to be eaten by the moth?
20 Ils sont détruits du matin au soir; sans qu'on y prenne garde, ils périssent pour toujours.
From morning to evening are they broken to pieces: without laying it [to heart] they perish for ever.
21 La corde de leur tente est coupée, ils meurent, sans avoir été sages. “
Behold, their excellency which is in them is torn away: they die, and this without wisdom.
