Exode 20
1 Alors Dieu prononça toutes ces paroles, en disant:
Then God said this [to the Israeli people: ]
2 Je suis l'Éternel ton Dieu, qui t'ai retiré du pays d'Égypte, de la maison de servitude.
“I am Yahweh God, the one you [worship]. I am the one who brought you out of Egypt. I am the one who freed you from being slaves [there].
3 Tu n'auras point d'autres dieux devant ma face.
[So] you must worship [only] me; you must not worship any other god.
4 Tu ne te feras point d'image taillée, ni aucune ressemblance des choses qui sont là-haut dans les cieux, ni ici-bas sur la terre, ni dans les eaux sous la terre;
You must not carve/make for yourselves any idol that represents anything in the sky or that is on the ground or that is in the water under the ground/earth.
5 Tu ne te prosterneras point devant elles, et tu ne les serviras point; car je suis l'Éternel ton Dieu, un Dieu jaloux, qui punis l'iniquité des pères sur les enfants, jusqu'à la troisième et à la quatrième génération de ceux qui me haïssent,
You must not bow down to any idol and worship it, because I am Yahweh God, and I (am very jealous/want you to worship me only). I will punish those who sin and hate me. I will punish not only them, but I will punish (their descendants, down to the third and fourth generation/their children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren).
6 Et qui fais miséricorde jusqu'à mille générations à ceux qui m'aiment et qui gardent mes commandements.
But I will steadfastly love thousands of generations of those who love me and obey my commandments (OR, I will love for thousands of generations.)
7 Tu ne prendras point le nom de l'Éternel ton Dieu en vain; car l'Éternel ne tiendra point pour innocent celui qui aura pris son nom en vain.
Do not use my name carelessly (OR, for wrong/evil purposes), because I am Yahweh God, the one whom you [should worship], and I will certainly punish those who use my name for wrong/evil purposes [LIT].
8 Souviens-toi du jour du repos pour le sanctifier;
Do not forget that the seventh day [of every week] is mine, so dedicate those days to me.
9 Tu travailleras six jours, et tu feras toute ton œuvre;
There are six days each week for you to do all your work,
10 Mais le septième jour est le repos de l'Éternel ton Dieu; tu ne feras aucune œuvre en ce jour-là, ni toi, ni ton fils, ni ta fille, ni ton serviteur, ni ta servante, ni ton bétail, ni l'étranger qui est dans tes portes;
but the seventh day is a day of rest, a day dedicated to me, Yahweh God, the one whom you [should worship]. On that day you must not do any work. You and your sons and daughters and your male and female slaves must not work. You must not even force your livestock to work, and you must not allow foreigners to work, those who are living in your country.
11 Car l'Éternel a fait en six jours les cieux et la terre, la mer et tout ce qui est en eux, et il s'est reposé le septième jour; c'est pourquoi l'Éternel a béni le jour du repos et l'a sanctifié.
I, Yahweh, created the sky, the earth, the ocean, and everything that is in them, in six days. Then I stopped my work of creating everything, and rested on the seventh day. That is the reason that I, Yahweh, have blessed the rest day and set it apart [to be a sacred/special day].
12 Honore ton père et ta mère, afin que tes jours soient prolongés sur la terre que l'Éternel ton Dieu te donne.
Honor/Respect your fathers and your mothers, in order that you may live a long time in the land that I, Yahweh God, will give you.
13 Tu ne tueras point.
Do not murder anyone.
14 Tu ne commettras point adultère.
Do not (commit adultery/have sex with anyone other than your spouse).
15 Tu ne déroberas point.
Do not steal anything.
16 Tu ne diras point de faux témoignage contre ton prochain.
Do not falsely accuse anyone [of committing a crime].
17 Tu ne convoiteras point la maison de ton prochain; tu ne convoiteras point la femme de ton prochain, ni son serviteur, ni sa servante, ni son bœuf, ni son âne, ni aucune chose qui soit à ton prochain.
Do not (covet/desire to have) someone else’s house, someone else’s wife, someone else’s male or female slave, someone else’s livestock, someone else’s donkeys, or anything else that some other person owns.”
18 Or, tout le peuple entendait les tonnerres et le son de la trompette, et voyait les éclairs et la montagne fumante. Le peuple donc, voyant cela, tremblait et se tenait loin.
When the people heard the thunder and saw the lightning, and when they heard the sound of the trumpet and saw the smoke on the mountain, they were afraid and trembled. They stood at a distance,
19 Et ils dirent à Moïse: Parle-nous toi-même, et nous écouterons; mais que Dieu ne parle point avec nous, de peur que nous ne mourions.
and said to Moses/me, “If you speak to us, we will listen. But do not let God speak any more to us. [We are afraid that] if he speaks [any more] to us, we will die.”
20 Et Moïse dit au peuple: Ne craignez point, car Dieu est venu pour vous éprouver, et afin que sa crainte soit devant vous, en sorte que vous ne péchiez point.
Moses/I replied, “Do not be afraid! God has come to determine/test [how you will behave]. He wants you to revere him, and to not sin.”
21 Le peuple donc se tint loin; et Moïse s'approcha de l'obscurité où était Dieu.
Then, as the people [watched from] a distance, Moses/I went close to the black cloud where God was.
22 Et l'Éternel dit à Moïse: Tu diras ainsi aux enfants d'Israël: Vous avez vu que je vous ai parlé des cieux.
Yahweh said to Moses/me, “Say this to the Israeli people: ‘You have heard how I, Yahweh, have spoken to you from heaven. I told you that you must not make any idols of silver or gold [that you will worship instead] of me.
23 Vous ne ferez point, à côté de moi, des dieux d'argent, et vous ne ferez point des dieux d'or.
24 Tu me feras un autel de terre, sur lequel tu sacrifieras tes holocaustes et tes sacrifices de prospérité, tes brebis et tes taureaux. En tout lieu où je ferai célébrer mon nom, je viendrai à toi et je te bénirai.
Make for me an altar from dirt. Sacrifice on it the animals that you will burn completely. Also sacrifice on it the animals that you will not burn completely, to maintain fellowship with me. Worship me [MTY] in any place that I choose for you to honor/worship me; and if you do that, I will come to you and bless you.
25 Que si tu me fais un autel de pierres, tu ne les emploieras point taillées; car si tu levais sur elles ton fer, tu les souillerais.
If you make for me an altar from stones, do not make it from stones that you have cut [to make them look nice], because you will make the altar unsuitable for [worshiping] me if you use tools to cut the stones.
26 Et tu ne monteras point à mon autel par des degrés, afin que ta nudité n'y soit pas découverte.
Do not make an altar that has steps in front of it, because if you do that, [people] could see your naked [buttocks] as you go up the steps.’”
