1 Joram, fils d'Achab, devint roi d'Israël, à Samarie, la dix-huitième année de Josaphat, roi de Juda, et il régna douze ans.
Joram, son of Ahab, became king of Israel in the eighteenth year of the reign of King Jehoshaphat of Judah. He reigned in Samaria for twelve years.
2 Il fit ce qui est mauvais aux yeux de l'Éternel, non pas pourtant comme son père et sa mère; car il ôta la statue de Baal que son père avait faite.
He did evil in the Lord's sight, but not like his father and mother had done, for he got rid of the stone image of Baal that his father had made.
3 Seulement il demeura dans les péchés de Jéroboam, fils de Nébat, qui avait fait pécher Israël. Il ne s'en détourna point.
However, he still held on to the sins that Jeroboam, son of Nebat, had made Israel commit—he did not give them up.
4 Or Mésha, roi de Moab, avait de grands troupeaux; et il payait au roi d'Israël un tribut de cent mille agneaux et cent mille béliers avec leur laine.
Mesha, king of Moab, was a sheep breeder. He used to provide a tribute to the king of Israel of one hundred thousand lambs and the wool of one hundred thousand rams.
5 Mais, aussitôt qu'Achab fut mort, le roi de Moab se révolta contre le roi d'Israël.
But after Ahab died, the king of Moab rebelled against the king of Israel.
6 C'est pourquoi le roi Joram sortit en ce jour de Samarie, et fit le dénombrement de tout Israël.
Immediately King Joram called up the whole Israelite army and left Samaria.
7 Et il envoya vers Josaphat, roi de Juda, pour lui dire: Le roi de Moab s'est révolté contre moi. Viendras-tu avec moi à la guerre contre Moab? Et il répondit: J'y monterai; dispose de moi comme de toi, de mon peuple comme de ton peuple, de mes chevaux comme de tes chevaux.
On his way he sent a message to Jehoshaphat, king of Judah, saying, “The king of Moab has rebelled against me. Will you join me in an attack on Moab?” Jehoshaphat replied, “Yes, I will join you. You and I are as one, my men and your men are as one, and my horses and your horses are as one.”
8 Et il dit: Par quel chemin monterons-nous? Et Joram répondit: Par le chemin du désert d'Édom.
Then he asked, “Which way shall we go?” “We'll take the road through the desert of Edom,” he replied.
9 Ainsi le roi d'Israël partit, avec le roi de Juda et le roi d'Édom; et, faisant le tour, ils marchèrent pendant sept jours; mais l'eau manqua pour le camp et pour les bêtes qui suivaient.
So the king of Israel, the king of Judah, and the king of Edom set off. Having followed an indirect route for seven days, they ran out of water for their army and for their animals.
10 Alors le roi d'Israël dit: Hélas! l'Éternel a sûrement appelé ces trois rois pour les livrer entre les mains de Moab
“What are we doing?” complained the king of Israel. “The Lord has brought us three kings here to hand us over to the Moabites!”
11 Et Josaphat dit: N'y a-t-il point ici quelque prophète de l'Éternel, afin que nous consultions l'Éternel par son moyen? Un des serviteurs du roi d'Israël répondit, et dit: Élisée, fils de Shaphat, qui versait l'eau sur les mains d'Élie, est ici.
But Jehoshaphat asked, “Isn't there a prophet of the Lord here with us? Let us consult the Lord through him.” One of the king of Israel's officers answered, “Elisha, son of Shaphat, is here. He was Elijah's assistant.”
12 Et Josaphat dit: La parole de l'Éternel est avec lui. Alors le roi d'Israël, Josaphat et le roi d'Édom descendirent vers lui.
Jehoshaphat agreed, “The Lord communicates by him.” So the king of Israel, Jehoshaphat, and the king of Edom went to see him.
13 Mais Élisée dit au roi d'Israël: Qu'y a-t-il entre moi et toi? Va-t'en vers les prophètes de ton père et vers les prophètes de ta mère! Et le roi d'Israël répondit: Non! car l'Éternel a appelé ces trois rois pour les livrer entre les mains de Moab.
Elisha said to the king of Israel, “What have I got to do with you? Go to your own prophets, those of your father and your mother.” But the king of Israel said to him, “No—because it's the Lord who has brought these three kings here to hand them over to the Moabites!”
14 Alors Élisée dit: L'Éternel des armées, devant qui je me tiens, est vivant! si je n'avais égard à Josaphat, roi de Juda, je ne ferais point attention à toi, et je ne te regarderais pas.
Elisha replied, “As the Lord Almighty lives, the one I serve, if I didn't respect the fact that Jehoshaphat, king of Judah, is here, I wouldn't even look in your direction or acknowledge you.
15 Mais maintenant, amenez-moi un joueur de harpe. Et comme le joueur de harpe jouait, la main de l'Éternel fut sur Élisée.
Now bring me a musician.” While the musician played, the Lord's power came upon Elisha,
16 Et il dit: Ainsi a dit l'Éternel: Qu'on fasse des fossés par toute cette vallée.
and he announced, “This is what the Lord says: This valley will be filled with pools of water. For the Lord says:
17 Car ainsi parle l'Éternel: Vous ne verrez ni vent ni pluie, et cette vallée se remplira d'eaux et vous boirez, vous, vos troupeaux et vos bêtes.
You won't see any wind, you won't see any rain, but even so this valley will be filled with water. You will drink, and your cattle, and your animals.
18 Et c'est peu de chose aux yeux de l'Éternel: Il livrera encore Moab entre vos mains.
The Lord views this as something trivial to do; and he will also make you victorious over the Moabites.
19 Et vous frapperez toutes les villes fortes et toutes les villes principales; vous abattrez tous les bons arbres, vous boucherez toutes les sources d'eau, et vous couvrirez de pierres tous les meilleurs champs.
You will conquer every fortified town, and every important town. You will chop down every good tree, block up every spring, and spoil every good field by throwing stones on them.”
20 Le matin donc, à l'heure où l'on offre l'oblation, il arriva qu'on vit des eaux venir par le chemin d'Édom, et le pays fut rempli d'eaux.
The next day, around the time of the morning sacrifice, water suddenly flowed from the direction of Edom, filling the whole countryside with water.
21 Or tous les Moabites, ayant appris que les rois étaient montés pour leur faire la guerre, s'étaient assemblés à cri public, depuis l'âge où l'on ceint le baudrier et au-dessus; et ils se tenaient sur la frontière.
All the Moabites had heard that the kings had come to attack them. So everyone who could wear a sword, young and old, was called up and went to guard the border.
22 Et, le matin, à leur lever, comme le soleil se levait sur les eaux, les Moabites virent vis-à-vis d'eux les eaux rouges comme du sang.
But the next morning when they got up the sun was shining on the water, and to the Moabites on the other side it looked blood red.
23 Et ils dirent: C'est du sang! Certainement, les rois se sont entre-tués, et chacun a frappé son compagnon. Maintenant donc, Moabites, au butin!
“This is blood!” they said. “The kings and their armies must have attacked and killed each other! Moabites, let's grab the plunder!”
24 Ainsi, ils vinrent au camp d'Israël; mais les Israélites se levèrent et battirent les Moabites, qui s'enfuirent devant eux; puis ils avancèrent dans le pays, et frappèrent Moab.
But when the Moabites arrived at the Israelite camp, the Israelites ran out and attacked them, and they ran away from them. So the Israelites invaded their country and killed the Moabites.
25 Ils détruisirent les villes, jetèrent chacun des pierres dans les meilleurs champs, et les remplirent; ils bouchèrent toutes les sources d'eau, et abattirent tous les bons arbres, jusqu'à ne laisser que les pierres à Kir-Haréseth, que les tireurs de fronde environnèrent et battirent.
They destroyed the towns, and each soldier threw stones on every good field until it was covered. They blocked up every spring and chopped down every good tree. Only Kir-haraseth still had its walls, but soldiers using slingshots surrounded it and attacked it as well.
26 Et le roi de Moab, voyant qu'il n'était pas le plus fort, prit avec lui sept cents hommes tirant l'épée, pour pénétrer jusqu'au roi d'Édom; mais ils ne le purent.
When the king of Moab realized he'd lost the battle, he led seven hundred swordsmen in an attempt to break through and attack the king of Edom, but they weren't able to do so.
27 Alors il prit son fils aîné, qui devait régner à sa place, et il l'offrit en holocauste sur la muraille. Et il y eut chez les Israélites une grande indignation. Ainsi ils se retirèrent de lui, et s'en retournèrent en leur pays.
So the king of Moab took his firstborn son, who was meant to succeed him, and sacrificed him as a burnt offering on the town wall. Great anger came upon the Israelites, so they left and went back to their own country.
