1 Samuel 8
1 Quand Samuel fut devenu vieux, il établit ses fils pour juges sur Israël.
And it comes to pass, when Samuel [is] aged, that he makes his sons judges over Israel.
2 Son premier-né s'appelait Joël, et le second Abija; et ils jugeaient à Béer-Shéba.
And the name of his firstborn son is Joel, and the name of his second Abiah, judges in Beer-Sheba:
3 Et ses fils ne marchèrent point dans ses voies, mais ils s'en détournèrent pour rechercher le gain; et ils prenaient des présents, et pervertissaient le droit.
and his sons have not walked in his ways, and turn aside after the dishonest gain, and take a bribe, and turn aside judgment.
4 Alors tous les anciens d'Israël s'assemblèrent, et vinrent vers Samuel à Rama;
And all [the] elderly of Israel gather themselves together, and come to Samuel at Ramath,
5 Et ils lui dirent: Voici, tu es devenu vieux, et tes fils ne marchent point dans tes voies; maintenant, établis sur nous un roi pour nous juger, comme en ont toutes les nations.
and say to him, “Behold, you have become aged, and your sons have not walked in your ways; now, appoint a king to us, to judge us, like all the nations.”
6 Et cette parole déplut à Samuel, parce qu'ils avaient dit: Donne-nous un roi pour nous juger; et Samuel pria l'Éternel.
And the thing is evil in the eyes of Samuel when they have said, “Give a king to us, to judge us”; and Samuel prays to YHWH.
7 Et l'Éternel dit à Samuel: Obéis à la voix du peuple, en tout ce qu'ils te diront; car ce n'est pas toi qu'ils ont rejeté, mais c'est moi qu'ils ont rejeté, afin que je ne règne point sur eux.
And YHWH says to Samuel, “Listen to the voice of the people, to all that they say to you, for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected Me from reigning over them.
8 Conformément à toutes les actions qu'ils ont faites, depuis le jour où je les ai fait monter hors d'Égypte jusqu'à ce jour, et de même qu'ils m'ont abandonné et ont servi d'autres dieux, ils agissent aussi de même à ton égard.
According to all the works that they have done from the day of My bringing them up out of Egypt, even to this day, when they forsake Me, and serve other gods—so they are also doing to you.
9 Maintenant donc, obéis à leur voix; seulement ne manque point de protester contre eux, et de leur déclarer comment le roi, qui régnera sur eux, les traitera.
And now, listen to their voice; only, surely you certainly protest to them, and have declared to them the custom of the king who reigns over them.”
10 Alors Samuel dit toutes les paroles de l'Éternel au peuple, qui lui avait demandé un roi.
And Samuel speaks all the words of YHWH to the people who are asking [for] a king from him,
11 Et il dit: Voici comment vous traitera le roi qui régnera sur vous. Il prendra vos fils, et les mettra sur ses chars et parmi ses cavaliers, et ils courront devant son char;
and says, “This is the custom of the king who reigns over you: he takes your sons, and has appointed for himself among his chariots, and among his horsemen, and they have run before his chariots;
12 Il les prendra aussi pour en faire ses chefs de milliers, et ses chefs de cinquantaines; pour labourer ses champs, pour récolter sa moisson, et pour faire ses instruments de guerre, et l'attirail de ses chars.
also to appoint for himself heads of thousands, and heads of fifties; also to plow his plowing, and to reap his reaping; and to make instruments of his war, and instruments of his charioteer.
13 Il prendra aussi vos filles, pour en faire des parfumeuses, des cuisinières, et des boulangères;
And he takes your daughters for perfumers, and for cooks, and for bakers;
14 Il prendra aussi vos champs, vos vignes et vos oliviers les meilleurs, et les donnera à ses serviteurs.
and your fields, and your vineyards, and your olive-yards—he takes the best, and has given to his servants.
15 Il lèvera la dîme de vos grains et de vos vignes, et la donnera à ses eunuques et à ses serviteurs;
And he tithes your seed and your vineyards, and has given to his eunuchs, and to his servants.
16 Il prendra vos serviteurs et vos servantes, et l'élite de vos jeunes gens, et vos ânes, et les emploiera à ses ouvrages;
And your menservants and your maidservants, and the best of your young men and your donkeys, he takes, and has prepared for his own work;
17 Il dîmera vos troupeaux, et vous serez ses esclaves.
he tithes your flock, and you are for servants to him.
18 Vous crierez, en ce jour-là, à cause de votre roi, que vous vous serez choisi, mais l'Éternel ne vous exaucera point.
And you have cried out in that day because of the king whom you have chosen for yourselves, and YHWH does not answer you in that day.”
19 Mais le peuple refusa d'écouter la voix de Samuel, et ils dirent: Non! mais il y aura un roi sur nous,
And the people refuse to listen to the voice of Samuel, and say, “No, but a king is over us,
20 Et nous serons, nous aussi, comme toutes les nations; et notre roi nous jugera, et sortira devant nous, et conduira nos guerres.
and we have been, even we, like all the nations; and our king has judged us, and gone out before us, and fought our battles.”
21 Et Samuel entendit toutes les paroles du peuple, et les rapporta aux oreilles de l'Éternel.
And Samuel hears all the words of the people, and speaks them in the ears of YHWH;
22 Et l'Éternel dit à Samuel: Obéis à leur voix, et établis-leur un roi. Et Samuel dit aux hommes d'Israël: Allez-vous-en chacun en sa ville.
and YHWH says to Samuel, “Listen to their voice, and you have caused a king to reign over them.” And Samuel says to the men of Israel, “Go, each man, to his city.”
