Tite 1
1 Paul, serviteur de Dieu et Apôtre de Jésus-Christ — pour annoncer la foi des élus de Dieu et faire connaître la vérité qui a pour objet la piété,
Paul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of the chosen ones of God, and an acknowledging of truth that [is] according to piety,
2 afin d’amener à l'espérance de la vie éternelle promise de tout temps par le Dieu qui ne trompe point, (aiōnios g166)
on hope of continuous life, which God, who does not lie, promised before times of ages (aiōnios g166)
3 et qui, au moment convenable, a révélé sa parole par la prédication qui m'a été confiée par l'ordre de Dieu, notre Sauveur —
(and He revealed His word in [His] own times), in preaching, which I was entrusted with, according to a charge of God our Savior,
4 à Tite, mon véritable enfant en la foi qui nous est commune: que la grâce et la paix te soient données par Dieu, notre Père, et par Jésus-Christ, notre Sauveur.
to Titus—true child according to a common faith: Grace, [[kindness, ]] peace, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Savior!
5 Je t'ai laissé en Crète précisément afin que tu achèves de tout organiser, et que tu établisses des anciens dans chaque ville, comme je te l'ai prescrit.
For this cause I left you in Crete, that you may arrange the things lacking, and may set elders down in every city, as I appointed to you,
6 S'il y a quelque homme d'une réputation intacte, mari d'une seule femme, ayant des enfants qui aient la foi et qui ne soient accusés ni de dissolution ni d'insubordination, choisis-le pour ancien:
if anyone is blameless, a husband of one wife, having believing children, not under accusation of riotous living or insubordinate—
7 car il faut que l'évêque soit irréprochable comme étant un économe de Dieu. Il ne doit être ni arrogant, ni colère, ni buveur, ni violent, ni porté à un gain sordide,
for it is required of the overseer to be blameless, as God’s steward, not self-pleased, nor prone to anger, not given to wine, not an abuser, not given to shameful gain,
8 mais il doit être hospitalier, ami des gens de bien, mesuré, juste, pieux, tempérant,
but a lover of strangers, a lover of [the] good, sober-minded, righteous, holy, self-controlled,
9 attaché à la vraie Parole, telle qu'on la lui a enseignée, afin qu'il soit en état, et d'exhorter par l'instruction morale, et de confondre les contradicteurs.
holding—according to the teaching—to the steadfast word, that he may also be able to exhort in the sound teaching, and to convict the deniers;
10 Il y a, en effet, surtout parmi les circoncis, bien des gens insubordonnés, bavards et séducteurs, à qui il faut fermer la bouche.
for there are many both insubordinate, vain-talkers, and mind-deceivers—especially those of the circumcision—
11 Ils bouleversent des familles entières, en enseignant pour un vil intérêt des choses inconvenantes.
whose mouths must be covered, who overturn whole households, teaching what things it should not, for [the] sake of shameful gain.
12 Un de leurs compatriotes, leur propre prophète, a dit: «Les Crétois sont toujours menteurs; ce sont de méchantes bêtes, des ventres paresseux.»
A certain one of them, a prophet of their own, said, “Cretans! Always liars, evil beasts, lazy bellies!”
13 Ce jugement est vrai: aussi reprends-les vertement, afin qu'ils aient une foi morale,
This testimony is true; for which cause convict them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith,
14 et qu'ils ne s'attachent pas à des fables judaïques, ni à des commandements d'hommes dévoyés.
not giving heed to Jewish fables and commands of men, turning themselves away from the truth.
15 Tout est pur pour ceux qui sont purs; mais pour ceux qui sont souillés et infidèles, rien n'est pur: leur esprit est souillé ainsi que leur conscience.
All things, indeed, [are] pure to the pure, and nothing [is] pure to the defiled and unsteadfast, but even the mind and the conscience of them [is] defiled.
16 Ils font profession de connaître Dieu, mais ils le renient par leurs oeuvres: ils sont abominables, rebelles et incapables de rien de bon.
They profess to know God, but they deny [Him] by their works, being abominable, and disobedient, and disapproved to every good work.
