Actes 5
1 Un homme nommé Ananias, avec Saphira sa femme, vendit une propriété,
Now a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession
2 et ayant, de concert avec elle, détourné quelque chose du prix, il en apporta une partie, et la déposa aux pieds des apôtres.
and kept back part of the price for himself, his wife also being party to it; bringing a certain part he placed it at the Apostles' feet.
3 Mais Pierre lui dit: «Ananias, pourquoi Satan a-t-il rempli ton coeur, que tu mentes au Saint-Esprit, et que tu aies détourné quelque chose du prix de ce fonds?
So Peter said: “Ananias, on what basis has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to keep back for yourself part of the price of the land?
4 S'il demeurait sans être vendu, ne restait-il pas ta propriété? Et, après l'avoir vendu, n'étais-tu pas le maître de disposer du prix? Comment as-tu bien pu concevoir un pareil dessein? Tu as menti, non aux hommes, mais à Dieu.»
While it remained unsold was it not yours, and once sold was it not in your power? How is it that you have conceived this thing in your heart? You did not lie to men but to God.”
5 En entendant ces paroles, Ananias tomba, et expira. Tous les auditeurs furent saisis d'une grande crainte.
Well upon hearing these words Ananias fell down and expired! (Great fear came on all who heard these things.)
6 Les plus jeunes s'étant levés l'arrangèrent et l'emportèrent pour l'enterrer.
So the young men got up and wrapped him, and carrying him out they buried him.
7 Environ trois heures après, sa femme entra, sans rien savoir de ce qui s'était passé.
Now after an interval of some three hours his wife came in, not knowing what had happened.
8 Pierre lui adressa la parole: «Dis-moi si vous avez vendu le fonds tant?» Elle dit: «Oui, tant.»
So Peter addressed her, “Tell me whether you sold the land for so much.” So she said, “Yes, for so much.”
9 Pierre lui dit: «Comment avez-vous bien pu vous entendre pour tenter l'Esprit du Seigneur? Voici, les pieds de ceux qui ont enterré ton mari sont à la porte... et ils t'emporteront»
Peter said to her: “How is it that you have agreed together to test the Spirit of the Lord? Look, the feet of those who buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out!”
10 Au même instant, elle tomba à ses pieds, et expira. Les jeunes gens, en entrant, la trouvèrent morte, ils l'emportèrent et l'enterrèrent auprès de son mari.
So she immediately fell down at his feet and expired! So upon entering the young men found her dead, and carrying her out they buried her beside her husband.
11 Cet événement répandit une grande crainte dans toute l'assemblée, et parmi tous ceux qui en entendirent parler.
So great fear came on the whole assembly and on all who heard these things.
12 Les apôtres faisaient beaucoup de miracles et de prodiges parmi le peuple, et les disciples étaient tous ensemble dans le portique de Salomon;
Now many signs and wonders were being performed among the people by the hands of the Apostles; and they were all in Solomon's Porch with one purpose.
13 aucune autre personne n'osait se joindre à eux, mais le peuple les exaltait.
None of the rest dared to join them, but the people were magnifying them.
14 Des croyants toujours plus nombreux, des multitudes d'hommes et de femmes, s'attachaient au Seigneur,
Believers were increasingly added to the Lord, multitudes of both men and women,
15 en sorte qu'on apportait les malades dans les rues et qu'on les plaçait sur de petits lits et sur des couchettes, afin que, lorsque Pierre passerait, son ombre au moins couvrit quelqu'un d'eux.
to the point that they kept carrying the sick into the streets, placing them on cots and pallets, so that as Peter came by at least his shadow might fall on some of them.
16 On venait aussi en foule des villes d'alentour à Jérusalem; on y apportait des malades et des gens tourmentés par des esprits impurs, et tous étaient guéris.
Further, the multitude from the surrounding cities also kept coming into Jerusalem, bringing sick people and those who were tormented by unclean spirits, and they were all healed.
17 Le souverain sacrificateur et tous ses adhérents, qui forment le parti des sadducéens, étaient pleins de haine contre les apôtres.
Then the high priest rose up, and all those with him (being the sect of the Sadducees); they were filled with jealousy
18 Ils les firent arrêter et les jetèrent dans une prison publique;
and laid their hands on the Apostles and put them in the common prison.
19 mais un ange du Seigneur ouvrit pendant la nuit les portes de la prison, les fit sortir, et leur dit:
But, during the night an angel of the Lord opened the doors of the prison, and leading them out he said,
20 «Allez, tenez-vous dans le temple, et enseignez au peuple toute la parole de vie: »
“Go, stand in the temple and speak to the people all the words of this Life.”
21 ce qu'ayant entendu, ils entrèrent vers le point du jour dans le temple, et se mirent à enseigner. Cependant le souverain sacrificateur et ses adhérents s'étant réunis, convoquèrent le sanhédrin et tout le collège des anciens des fils d'Israël, et ils envoyèrent à la prison pour qu'on amenât les apôtres.
So upon hearing it they entered the temple about daybreak and started to teach. Then the high priest and those with him arrived and convened the Sanhedrin, even all the council of elders of the sons of Israel, and sent to the prison to have them brought.
22 Les agents s'y étant rendus, ne les y trouvèrent point, et revinrent faire leur rapport,
Well, upon arriving the operatives did not find them in the jail, so they returned and reported,
23 disant: «Nous avons trouvé la prison très-bien fermée et les sentinelles aux portes, mais, après avoir ouvert, nous n'avons trouvé personne dedans.»
saying: “We certainly found the prison securely locked, and the guards standing in front of the doors, but upon opening them we found no one inside!”
24 Cette nouvelle jeta le souverain sacrificateur, le commandant du temple et les principaux sacrificateurs dans la perplexité au sujet des prisonniers: ils ne savaient ce que ce pouvait être.
Now when the high priest, the captain of the temple, and the chief priests heard these words, they were really perplexed as to what the implications might be.
25 Cependant on vint leur dire: «Voici, les hommes que vous aviez mis en prison, sont dans le temple, et ils enseignent le peuple.»
But someone came and told them, “Hey, the men whom you put in the jail are standing in the temple and teaching the people!”
26 Alors le commandant partit avec ses agents, et les amena, mais sans employer la force, pour ne pas être lapidés, car ils craignaient le peuple.
Then the captain went with the operatives and brought them without violence, because they were afraid that the people might stone them.
27 Après les avoir amenés ils les introduisirent dans le sanhédrin, et le souverain sacrificateur les interrogea, disant:
So bringing them they set them before the Sanhedrin; and the high priest addressed them
28 «Nous vous avons formellement défendu d'enseigner en ce nom-là, et voici, vous avez rempli Jérusalem de votre enseignement, et vous voulez faire retomber sur nous le sang de cet homme.»
saying: “Did we not emphatically command you not to teach in this name? Just look, you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching, and you intend to bring this man's blood on us!”
29 Pierre et les autres apôtres répondirent: «On doit obéir à Dieu plutôt qu'aux hommes.
So in answer Peter and the Apostles said: “One must obey God rather than men.
30 Le Dieu de nos pères a ressuscité Jésus, que vous avez tué en le pendant au bois;
The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom you murdered by hanging on a tree.
31 il l’a élevé à sa droite, en qualité de Chef et Sauveur, pour donner à Israël la repentance et le pardon des péchés.
Him God has exalted to His right hand as Prince and Savior, to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins.
32 Nous sommes nous-mêmes ses témoins, les témoins de ce que nous avançons, et le Saint-Esprit que Dieu a donné à ceux qui lui obéissent, en est témoin avec nous.»
And we are witnesses to these statements about Him, as also is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those obeying Him.”
33 Exaspérés de ce qu'ils venaient d'entendre, les sénateurs étaient d'avis de les faire mourir,
Well upon hearing it they became infuriated and started plotting to kill them.
34 quand un pharisien, nommé Gamaliel, docteur de la Loi fort considéré de tout le peuple, ordonna de faire sortir un instant ces gens,
But someone in the council stood up (a Pharisee named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law respected by all the people) and commanded to put the Apostles out for a bit.
35 puis il dit: «Israélites, prenez bien garde à ce que vous allez faire à ces hommes.
He then said to them: “Men, Israelites, take heed to yourselves concerning these men, as to what you are about to do.
36 Il n'y a pas longtemps que parut Theudas; il se donnait pour un grand personnage, et environ quatre cents hommes se rallièrent à lui: il a été mis à mort, et tous ceux qui l'avaient suivi ont été défaits et réduits à rien.
For some time ago Theudas rose up, claiming to be somebody; with whom about four hundred men joined up; who was killed, and all who obeyed him were scattered and came to nothing.
37 Plus tard, à l'époque du dénombrement, s'éleva Judas le Galiléen qui entraîna du monde après lui: il a péri aussi, et tous ceux qui l'avaient suivi ont été dispersés.
Later Judas the Galilean rose up, in the days of the census, and drew away many people after him. He also perished, and all who obeyed him were dispersed.
38 Maintenant, je vous le dis, ne vous commettez pas avec ces gens et laissez-les tranquilles. Si cette idée, ou cette oeuvre vient des hommes, elle se détruira;
So now I say to you, keep away from these men and leave them alone; because if this counsel or this work should be of men, it will be abolished;
39 mais si elle vient de Dieu, vous ne pourrez détruire ces gens. Prenez garde que vous ne vous trouviez aussi avoir fait la guerre à Dieu.»
but if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow it—lest you even be found to be fighting against God!”
40 Ils se rangèrent à son avis. Ayant rappelé les apôtres, ils leur défendirent, après les avoir fait battre de verges, de parler au nom de Jésus, et ils les relâchèrent.
Well they were persuaded by him, and summoned the Apostles; after beating them they commanded them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.
41 Pour eux, ils se retirèrent joyeux de devant le sanhédrin, parce qu'ils avaient été jugés dignes de souffrir des opprobres pour ce nom;
So they went out rejoicing from the presence of the council, in that they were counted worthy to suffer dishonor for the name of the Christ.
42 et ils ne cessèrent chaque jour, dans le temple et à la maison, d'enseigner et d'annoncer que Jésus est le Messie.
And every day, in the temple and from house to house, they did not stop teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ.
