Actes 19
1 Pendant qu’Apollos était à Corinthe. Paul, après avoir parcouru les hautes provinces de l’Asie, arriva à Éphèse. Il y trouva quelques disciples,
And it came to pass, while Apollo was at Corinth, that Paul having passed through the upper coasts, came to Ephesus, and found certain disciples.
2 et leur dit: «Avez-vous reçu le Saint-Esprit, quand vous avez cru?» Ils lui répondirent: «Mais nous n'avons pas même entendu dire qu'il y ait un Saint-Esprit?»
And he said to them: Have you received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? But they said to him: We have not so much as heard whether there be a Holy Ghost.
3 - «Quel baptême, leur dit-il, avez-vous donc reçu?» Ils répondirent: «Le baptême de Jean.»
And he said: In what then were you baptized? Who said: In John’s baptism.
4 Alors Paul leur dit: «Jean a baptisé du baptême de la repentance en disant au peuple que c'était afin qu'ils eussent foi en celui qui venait après lui, c'est-à-dire, on Jésus.»
Then Paul said: John baptized the people with the baptism of penance, saying: That they should believe in him who was to come after him, that is to say, in Jesus.
5 Là-dessus, ils se firent baptiser au nom du Seigneur Jésus,
Having heard these things, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
6 et Paul leur ayant imposé les mains, le Saint-Esprit vint sur eux: ils parlaient des langues et prophétisaient.
And when Paul had imposed his hands on them, the Holy Ghost came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied.
7 Ils étaient en tout environ douze.
And all the men were about twelve.
8 Paul entra dans la synagogue; il y parla hardiment, et pendant trois mois il s'efforça par ses discours de convaincre les Juifs de ce qui concerne le royaume de Dieu.
And entering into the synagogue, he spoke boldly for the space of three months, disputing and exhorting concerning the kingdom of God.
9 Mais, comme quelques-uns s'endurcissaient et se refusaient à croire, décriant devant la multitude la voie du Seigneur, il se sépara d'eux, prit à part les disciples et se mit à enseigner chaque jour dans l'école d'un nommé Tyrannus.
But when some were hardened, and believed not, speaking evil of the way of the Lord, before the multitude, departing from them, he separated the disciples, disputing daily in the school of one Tyrannus.
10 Cela dura deux ans, de sorte que tous ceux qui habitaient l'Asie, tant Juifs que Grecs, entendirent la parole du Seigneur.
And this continued for the space of two years, so that all they who dwelt in Asia, heard the word of the Lord, both Jews and Gentiles.
11 Et Dieu faisait des miracles prodigieux par les mains de Paul,
And God wrought by the hand of Paul more than common miracles.
12 au point que l'on appliquait sur les malades les mouchoirs et les tabliers qui avaient touché son corps, et les maladies étaient guéries, et les esprits malins étaient chassés.
So that even there were brought from his body to the sick, handkerchiefs and aprons, and the diseases departed from them, and the wicked spirits went out of them.
13 Quelques-uns aussi des exorcistes juifs qui courent les pays, essayèrent de prononcer le nom du Seigneur Jésus sur ceux qui avaient des esprits malins, en disant: «Je vous conjure par Jésus que Paul prêche.»
Now some also of the Jewish exorcists who went about, attempted to invoke over them that had evil spirits, the name of the Lord Jesus, saying: I conjure you by Jesus, whom Paul preacheth.
14 (C'étaient sept fils de Scévas, grand sacrificateur juif, qui faisaient cela).
And there were certain men, seven sons of Sceva, a Jew, a chief priest, that did this.
15 Mais l'esprit malin répondit: «Je connais Jésus, et je sais qui est Paul; mais vous, qui êtes-vous?»
But the wicked spirit, answering, said to them: Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you?
16 Et l'homme en qui se trouvait l'esprit malin, sauta sur eux, se rendit maître de tous deux, et les maltraita si fort qu'ils s'enfuirent de cette maison, nus et blessés.
And the man in whom the wicked spirit was, leaping upon them, and mastering them both, prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.
17 Ce fait étant venu à la connaissance des Juifs et des Grecs qui habitaient Éphèse, ils furent tous saisis de crainte, et le nom du Seigneur Jésus fut glorifié.
And this became known to all the Jews and the Gentiles that dwelt at Ephesus; and fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.
18 Plusieurs de ceux qui avaient cru, venaient confesser et déclarer ce qu'ils avaient fait.
And many of them that believed, came confessing and declaring their deeds.
19 Un grand nombre de ceux qui exerçaient les sciences occultes, apportèrent leurs livres et les brûlèrent devant tout le monde; ils en calculèrent le prix et trouvèrent qu'il s'élevait à cinquante mille drachmes:
And many of them who had followed curious arts, brought together their books, and burnt them before all; and counting the price of them, they found the money to be fifty thousand pieces of silver.
20 telle était la force avec laquelle la parole du Seigneur s'étendait et se montrait puissante.
So mightily grew the word of God, and was confirmed.
21 Après cela, Paul résolut d'aller à Jérusalem en passant par la Macédoine et par l'Achaïe, et il se dit: «Lorsque j'aurai été là, il faut aussi que je voie Rome.»
And when these things were ended, Paul purposed in the spirit, when he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia, to go to Jerusalem, saying: After I have been there, I must see Rome also.
22 Il envoya en Macédoine deux de ses aides, Timothée et Éraste; lui-même resta encore quelque temps en Asie.
And sending into Macedonia two of them that ministered to him, Timothy and Erastus, he himself remained for a time in Asia.
23 Il s'éleva, à cette époque, un grand tumulte au sujet de la voie du Seigneur.
Now at that time there arose no small disturbance about the way of the Lord.
24 Un orfèvre nommé Démétrius, qui faisait de petits temples de Diane en argent, et qui donnait beaucoup d'ouvrage aux artistes,
For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith, who made silver temples for Diana, brought no small gain to the craftsmen;
25 les rassembla, ainsi que les ouvriers qui travaillaient à ce genre d'objets, et leur dit: «hommes, vous savez que cette industrie fait notre aisance;
Whom he calling together, with the workmen of like occupation, said: Sirs, you know that our gain is by this trade;
26 et vous voyez et vous entendez dire, que, non seulement à Ephèse, mais encore dans presque toute l'Asie, ce Paul a fait changer beaucoup de monde, en persuadant par ses discours, que les dieux faits de main d'homme ne sont pas des dieux;
And you see and hear, that this Paul by persuasion hath drawn away a great multitude, not only of Ephesus, but almost of all Asia, saying: They are not gods which are made by hands.
27 de sorte que nous courons le risque, non seulement que notre partie ne tombe, mais encore que le temple de la grande déesse Diane ne soit complètement discrédité, et qu'on ne dépouille de sa majesté celle que toute l'Asie, que le monde entier adore.»
So that not only this our craft is in danger to be set at nought, but also the temple of great Diana shall be reputed for nothing; yea, and her majesty shall begin to be destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worshippeth.
28 Ces paroles les ayant enflammés de colère, ils se mirent à crier: «Grande est la Diane des Éphésiens!»
Having heard these things, they were full of anger, and cried out, saying: Great is Diana of the Ephesians.
29 Et la ville fut remplie de confusion. Ils se portèrent tous ensemble au théâtre, entraînant avec eux Caïus et Aristarque, Macédoniens qui avaient accompagné Paul dans son voyage.
And the whole city was filled with confusion; and having caught Gaius and Aristarchus, men of Macedonia, Paul’s companions, they rushed with one accord into the theatre.
30 Paul voulait se rendre vers le peuple, mais ses disciples ne le lui permirent pas,
And when Paul would have entered in unto the people, the disciples suffered him not.
31 et même quelques-uns des Asiarques, qui étaient de ses amis, envoyèrent vers lui pour le prier de ne pas se présenter au théâtre.
And some also of the rulers of Asia, who were his friends, sent unto him, desiring that he would not venture himself into the theatre.
32 Les uns donc criaient d'une manière, les autres d'une autre, car l'assemblée était tumultueuse, et la plupart ne savaient pas pourquoi ils s'étaient réunis.
Now some cried one thing, some another. For the assembly was confused, and the greater part knew not for what cause they were come together.
33 Cependant on vit sortir de la foule Alexandre, qui était poussé en avant par les Juifs. Il fit signe de la main qu'il voulait parler au peuple;
And they drew forth Alexander out of the multitude, the Jews thrusting him forward. And Alexander beckoning with his hand for silence, would have given the people satisfaction.
34 mais, lorsqu'ils eurent reconnu qu'il était Juif, ils poussèrent tous une clameur, et, durant près de deux heures, ils crièrent: «Grande est la Diane des Éphésiens!»
But as soon as they perceived him to be a Jew, all with one voice, for the space of about two hours, cried out: Great is Diana of the Ephesians.
35 Le chancelier ayant apaisé la foule, dit: «Éphésiens, quel homme au monde ignore que la ville d'Éphèse est la gardienne du temple de la grande Diane et de sa statue tombée du ciel?
And when the town clerk had appeased the multitudes, he said: Ye men of Ephesus, what man is there that knoweth not that the city of the Ephesians is a worshipper of the great Diana, and of Jupiter’s offspring.
36 Puis donc que cela est incontestable, vous devez vous calmer et ne rien faire inconsidérément;
For as much therefore as these things cannot be contradicted, you ought to be quiet, and to do nothing rashly.
37 car ces hommes que vous avez amenés ici, ne sont ni sacrilèges, ni blasphémateurs de notre déesse.
For you have brought hither these men, who are neither guilty of sacrilege, nor of blasphemy against your goddess.
38 Si Démétrius et les artistes qui l'accompagnent, ont quelque plainte à faire contre quelqu'un, il y a des assises et des proconsuls, qu'ils s'y adressent;
But if Demetrius and the craftsmen that are with him, have a matter against any man, the courts of justice are open, and there are proconsuls: let them accuse one another.
39 et si vous avez à débattre d'autres affaires, cela se videra dans l'assemblée légale,
And if you inquire after any other matter, it may be decided in a lawful assembly.
40 car nous risquons d'être accusés de sédition pour le rassemblement d'aujourd'hui, parce qu'il n'y a pas de motif qui puisse justifier cet attroupement.»
For we are even in danger to be called in question for this day’s uproar, there being no man guilty (of whom we may give account) of this concourse.
41 Là-dessus, il congédia l'assemblée.
And when he had said these things, he dismissed the assembly.
