Actes 17
1 Ils firent route par Amphipolis, par Apollonie, et arrivèrent à Thessalonique, où se trouvait la synagogue des Juifs.
And having passed through Amphipolis, and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where the synagogue of the Jews was,
2 Paul y entra selon sa coutume, et discuta avec eux pendant trois sabbats de suite.
and according to the custom of Paul, he went in to them, and for three Sabbaths he was reasoning with them from the Writings,
3 Il expliquait et enseignait par les Écritures, que le Messie avait dû souffrir et ressusciter des morts, ajoutant: «Ce Messie, c'est Jésus, que je vous annonce.»
opening and alleging that it was necessary [for] the Christ to suffer, and to rise again out of the dead, and that “this is the Christ—Jesus whom I proclaim to you.”
4 Quelques Juifs furent persuadés, et passèrent du côté de Paul et de Silas, comme aussi une grande multitude de Grecs craignant Dieu, et un assez grand nombre des premières dames de la ville.
And certain of them believed, and attached themselves to Paul and to Silas, also a great multitude of the worshiping Greeks, also not a few of the principal women.
5 Mais les Juifs ayant recruté quelques mauvais sujets des rues, firent un attroupement et du tumulte dans la ville; puis, s'étant portés vers la maison de Jason, ils cherchèrent les apôtres pour les mener devant le peuple:
And the Jews, having been moved with envy, and having taken to themselves certain evil men of the agitators, and having made a crowd, were setting the city in an uproar; having also assailed the house of Jason, they were seeking them to bring [them] to the populace,
6 ne les ayant pas trouvés, ils traînèrent Jason et quelques frères devant les autorités de la ville, criant: «Ces gens qui ont bouleversé le monde, les voilà maintenant ici.
and having not found them, they drew Jason and certain brothers to the city rulers, calling aloud, “These, having put the world in commotion, are also present here,
7 Jason les a reçus, et tous, ils agissent contre les édits de César, disant qu'il y a un autre roi, Jésus.»
whom Jason has received; and all these do contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying another to be king—Jesus.”
8 Ils jetèrent le trouble dans la population et chez les magistrats qui entendirent ces accusations.
And they troubled the multitude and the city rulers, hearing these things,
9 Ce ne fut qu'après avoir reçu satisfaction de Jason et des autres, qu'ils les laissèrent aller.
and having taken security from Jason and the rest, they let them go.
10 Les frères se hâtèrent de faire partir, dans la nuit, Paul et Silas pour Bérée. Quand ils y furent arrivés, ils se rendirent à la synagogue des Juifs.
And the brothers immediately, through the night, sent forth both Paul and Silas to Berea, who having come, went into the synagogue of the Jews;
11 Ceux-ci montrèrent des sentiments plus élevés que ceux de Thessalonique; ils accueillirent la Parole avec beaucoup d'empressement, examinant chaque jour les Écritures, pour voir si ce qu'on leur enseignait était exact.
and these were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they received the word with all readiness of mind, examining the Writings every day [to see] whether those things were so;
12 Un grand nombre d'entre eux crurent, et spécialement beaucoup de femmes grecques de qualité, et un assez grand nombre d'hommes.
therefore, many of them, indeed, believed, and not a few of the honorable Greek women and men.
13 Mais aussitôt que les Juifs de Thessalonique surent que Paul annonçait également la parole de Dieu à Bérée, ils vinrent y agiter aussi la population.
And when the Jews from Thessalonica knew that also in Berea was the word of God declared by Paul, they came there also, agitating the multitudes;
14 Alors les frères firent immédiatement partir Paul, pour qu'il gagnât la mer, mais Silas et Timothée restèrent à Bérée.
and then immediately the brothers sent forth Paul, to go on as it were to the sea, but both Silas and Timotheus were remaining there.
15 Ceux qui s'étaient chargés de Paul, le conduisirent jusqu’à Athènes; ils en partirent avec ordre de dire à Silas et à Timothée de le rejoindre au plus tôt.
And those conducting Paul, brought him to Athens, and having received a command to Silas and Timotheus that with all speed they may come to him, they departed;
16 Pendant que Paul les attendait à Athènes, son coeur était froissé intérieurement de voir cette ville toute pleine d'idoles.
and Paul waiting for them in Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, beholding the city wholly given to idolatry,
17 Il discutait donc dans la synagogue avec les Juifs et avec les hommes craignant Dieu, et tous les jours dans la place avec les premiers venus.
therefore, indeed, he was reasoning in the synagogue with the Jews, and with the worshiping persons, and in the marketplace every day with those who met with him.
18 Quelques philosophes épicuriens et des stoïciens conférèrent avec lui: quelques-uns disaient: «Que veut bien dire ce discoureur?» et d'autres: «Il paraît que c'est un prédicateur de divinités étrangères; » parce que Paul leur annonçait Jésus et la résurrection.
And certain of the Epicurean and of the Stoic philosophers, were meeting together to see him, and some were saying, “What would this seed picker wish to say?” And others, “He seems to be an announcer of strange demons”; because he proclaimed to them Jesus and the resurrection as good news,
19 Alors ils le prirent, et le menèrent à la place de l'Aréopage, disant: «Pourrions-nous savoir quelle est cette nouvelle doctrine que tu prêches?
having also taken him, they brought [him] to the Areopagus, saying, “Are we able to know what this new teaching [is] that is spoken by you,
20 Car tu nous fais entendre des choses étranges: nous désirerions donc savoir ce que cela peut être.»
for you bring certain strange things to our ears? We resolve, then, to know what these things would wish to be”;
21 Or tous les Athéniens et les étrangers qui demeuraient à Athènes, ne passaient leur temps qu'à dire ou à écouter des nouvelles.
and all Athenians, and the strangers sojourning, for nothing else were at leisure but to say something, and to hear some newer thing.
22 Paul, debout au milieu de l'Aréopage, leur dit: «Athéniens, je me suis aperçu que vous êtes, à tous égards, plus dévots que les autres peuples,
And Paul, having stood in the midst of the Areopagus, said, “Men, Athenians, in all things I perceive you as over-religious;
23 car, ayant examiné en passant les objets de votre culte, j'ai trouvé même un autel sur lequel il est écrit: «A un Dieu inconnu.» Eh bien! ce que vous révérez sans le connaître, c'est ce que je vous annonce,
for passing through and contemplating your objects of worship, I also found an altar on which had been inscribed: To God—unknown; whom, therefore—not knowing—you worship, this One I announce to you.
24 le Dieu qui a fait le monde et tout ce qu'il renferme. Lui, qui est le Maître du ciel et de la terre, n'habite pas dans des sanctuaires faits de main d'homme;
God, who made the world, and all things in it, this One, being Lord of Heaven and of earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands,
25 il n'est point servi non plus par des mains humaines, comme s'il avait besoin de quelque chose, lui qui donne à tous la vie, la respiration, et toutes choses.
neither is He served by the hands of men—needing anything, He giving life to all, and breath, and all things;
26 Il a fait habiter tout le genre humain, qui est issu d'un seul et même sang, sur toute la surface de la terre, ayant déterminé la durée précise des nations, ainsi que les limites de leur habitation,
He also made every nation of man of one blood, to dwell on all the face of the earth—having ordained times before appointed, and the bounds of their dwellings—
27 afin qu'elles le cherchent, et le trouvent comme à tâtons. Et certes, il n'est pas loin de chacun de nous,
to seek the LORD, if perhaps they felt after Him and found, though, indeed, He is not far from each one of us,
28 car c'est en lui que nous avons la vie, le mouvement et l'être; et, comme l'ont dit quelques-uns de vos poètes, «nous sommes aussi de sa race.»
for in Him we live, and move, and are; as certain of your poets have also said: For we are also His offspring.
29 Puis donc que nous sommes de la race de Dieu, nous ne devons pas croire que la Divinité soit semblable à une sculpture d'or, d'argent ou de pierre, fruit de l'art et de la pensée de l'homme.
Being, therefore, offspring of God, we ought not to think the Godhead to be like to gold, or silver, or stone, [an] engraving of art and imagination of man;
30 Dieu, passant donc sur ces temps d'ignorance, fait savoir actuellement en tous lieux, à tous les hommes, qu'ils aient à se repentir;
therefore indeed God, having overlooked the times of ignorance, now commands all men everywhere to convert,
31 parce qu'il a arrêté un jour, où il doit juger la terre avec justice, par l'homme qu'il a désigné, en foi de quoi il l'a ressuscité des morts...»
because He set a day in which He is about to judge the world in righteousness, by a Man whom He ordained, having given assurance to all, having raised Him out of the dead.”
32 Lorsqu'ils entendirent parler de résurrection des morts, les uns se moquèrent, les autres dirent: «Nous t'entendrons là -dessus une autre fois.»
And having heard of a resurrection of the dead, some, indeed, were mocking, but others said, “We will hear you again concerning this”;
33 C'est ainsi que Paul se retira du milieu d'eux.
and so Paul went forth from the midst of them,
34 Toutefois quelque personnes s'étant attachées à lui, embrassèrent la foi, savoir Denis l'aréopagite, une femme nommée Damaris, et d'autres avec eux.
and certain men having cleaved to him, believed, among whom [is] also Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman, by name Damaris, and others with them.
