Actes 16
1 Il y fit rencontre d'un disciple nommé Timothée, qui était fils d'une Juive fidèle, mais d'un père grec,
Paul came to Derbe and then to Lystra, where he found a disciple named Timothy, the son of a believing Jewish woman and a Greek father.
2 et qui jouissait d'un bon renom parmi les frères de Lystres et d'Icône.
The brothers in Lystra and Iconium spoke well of him.
3 Paul voulut remmener avec lui; il le prit et le circoncit à cause des Juifs qui étaient en ces lieux-là, car tous savaient que son père était grec.
Paul wanted Timothy to accompany him, so he took him and circumcised him on account of the Jews in that area, for they all knew that his father was a Greek.
4 Dans les villes où ils passaient, ils enseignaient aux frères à garder les arrêtés pris par les apôtres et par les anciens de Jérusalem.
As they went from town to town, they delivered the decisions handed down by the apostles and elders in Jerusalem for the people to obey.
5 Les églises s'affermissaient donc dans la foi, et croissaient en nombre de jour en jour.
So the churches were strengthened in the faith and grew daily in numbers.
6 Ils parcoururent la Phrygie et le pays de Galatie, après avoir été empêchés par le Saint-Esprit d'annoncer la Parole dans l’Asie.
After the Holy Spirit had prevented them from speaking the word in the province of Asia, they traveled through the region of Phrygia and Galatia.
7 Arrivés près de la Mysie, ils essayèrent d'entrer en Bithynie, mais l'Esprit de Jésus ne le leur permit pas.
And when they came to the border of Mysia, they tried to enter Bithynia, but the Spirit of Jesus would not permit them.
8 Alors, ayant traversé rapidement la Mysie, ils descendirent à Troas.
So they passed by Mysia and went down to Troas.
9 Là, Paul eut une vision dans la nuit: il vit un Macédonien debout, qui l'appelait, et lui disait: «Passe en Macédoine pour nous secourir.»
During the night, Paul had a vision of a man of Macedonia standing and pleading with him, “Come over to Macedonia and help us.”
10 Aussitôt après cette vision, nous cherchâmes à passer en Macédoine, concluant que le Seigneur nous appelait à y porter l'évangile.
As soon as Paul had seen the vision, we got ready to leave for Macedonia, concluding that God had called us to preach the gospel to them.
11 Étant donc partis de Troas, nous fîmes voile droit vers la Samothrace, et le lendemain nous débarquâmes à Néapolis.
We sailed from Troas straight to Samothrace, and the following day on to Neapolis.
12 De là, nous allâmes à Philippes, colonie romaine, qui est la première ville du district de Macédoine. Nous nous arrêtâmes quelques jours dans cette ville.
From there we went to the Roman colony of Philippi, the leading city of that district of Macedonia. And we stayed there several days.
13 Le jour du sabbat, nous nous rendîmes hors de la porte, vers une rivière, où se trouvait, selon la coutume, un lieu de prière, et nous étant assis, nous nous entretînmes avec les femmes qui s'y étaient assemblées.
On the Sabbath we went outside the city gate along the river, where it was customary to find a place of prayer. After sitting down, we spoke to the women who had gathered there.
14 L'une d'elles écouta: c'était une marchande de pourpre, nommée Lydie, de la ville de Thyatire, femme craignant Dieu. Le Seigneur lui ouvrit le coeur pour qu'elle fût attentive aux choses que Paul disait.
Among those listening was a woman named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth from the city of Thyatira, who was a worshiper of God. The Lord opened her heart to respond to Paul’s message.
15 Lorsqu'elle eut été baptisée, ainsi que sa famille, elle nous adressa cette invitation: «Puisque vous avez jugé que j'ai foi au Seigneur, venez demeurer chez moi.» Et elle nous y contraignit.
And when she and her household had been baptized, she urged us, “If you consider me a believer in the Lord, come and stay at my house.” And she persuaded us.
16 Un jour que nous nous acheminions vers le lieu de prière, nous rencontrâmes une servante qui avait un esprit Python, et qui, en devinant, procurait un grand profit à ses maîtres.
One day as we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a slave girl with a spirit of divination, who earned a large income for her masters by fortune-telling.
17 Elle se mit à nous suivre, Paul et nous, en criant: «Ces hommes-là sont des serviteurs du Dieu Très-Haut, ils nous annoncent la voie du salut.
This girl followed Paul and the rest of us, shouting, “These men are servants of the Most High God, who are proclaiming to you the way of salvation!”
18 Elle fit cela plusieurs jours de suite, et Paul en étant fatigué, se retourna, et dit à l'esprit: «Je te commande, au nom de Jésus, de sortir de cette fille; » et il sortit à l'heure même.
She continued this for many days. Eventually Paul grew so aggravated that he turned and said to the spirit, “In the name of Jesus Christ I command you to come out of her!” And the spirit left her at that very moment.
19 Les maîtres de la servante, voyant que leur espérance de gain s'était évanouie, se saisirent de Paul et de Silas, et les traînèrent à la place publique vers les magistrats.
When the girl’s owners saw that their hope of making money was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them before the authorities in the marketplace.
20 Ils les amenèrent devant les préteurs, et dirent: «Ces hommes troublent notre ville.
They brought them to the magistrates and said, “These men are Jews and are throwing our city into turmoil
21 Ce sont des Juifs; ils prêchent des pratiques qu'il ne nous est pas permis à nous, Romains, d'adopter ni de suivre.»
by promoting customs that are unlawful for us Romans to adopt or practice.”
22 La foule se souleva aussi contre eux, et les préteurs, leur ayant arraché leurs vêtements, ordonnèrent qu'ils fussent battus de verges.
The crowd joined in the attack against Paul and Silas, and the magistrates ordered that they be stripped and beaten with rods.
23 Lorsqu'on les eut chargés de coups, ils les firent jeter en prison en commandant au geôlier de les garder sûrement.
And after striking them with many blows, they threw them into prison and ordered the jailer to guard them securely.
24 D'après cet ordre, le geôlier les mit dans le cachot intérieur, et fixa leurs pieds dans les ceps.
On receiving this order, he placed them in the inner cell and fastened their feet in the stocks.
25 Vers le milieu de la nuit, Paul et Silas, s'étant mis en prière, chantaient des hymnes à Dieu; et les détenus les entendaient.
About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them.
26 Tout à coup il se fit un si grand tremblement de terre, que les fondements de la prison en furent ébranlés; au même instant, toutes les portes s'ouvrirent, et les fers de tous les prisonniers tombèrent.
Suddenly a strong earthquake shook the foundations of the prison. At once all the doors flew open and everyone’s chains came loose.
27 Le geôlier, s'étant réveillé, et voyant les portes de la prison ouvertes, crut que les détenus s'étaient enfuis; il tira une épée et allait se tuer,
When the jailer woke up and saw the prison doors open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself, presuming that the prisoners had escaped.
28 lorsque Paul lui cria d'une voix forte: «Ne te fais point de mal mous sommes tous ici.»
But Paul called out in a loud voice, “Do not harm yourself! We are all here!”
29 Alors, ayant demandé de la lumière, il s'élança dans le cachot, et, tout tremblant, se jeta aux pieds de Paul et de Silas;
Calling for lights, the jailer rushed in and fell trembling before Paul and Silas.
30 puis, les ayant fait sortir, il leur dit: «Seigneurs, que faut-il que je fasse pour être sauvé?»
Then he brought them out and asked, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”
31 Ils lui répondirent: «Crois au Seigneur Jésus, et tu seras sauvé, toi et ta famille; »
They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved, you and your household.”
32 et ils lui annoncèrent la parole du Seigneur, ainsi qu'à tous ceux qui étaient dans sa maison.
Then Paul and Silas spoke the word of the Lord to him and to everyone in his house.
33 A cette même heure de la nuit, le geôlier les prit avec lui, lava leurs plaies, et, immédiatement après, il fut baptisé, lui et tous les siens.
At that hour of the night, the jailer took them and washed their wounds. And without delay, he and all his household were baptized.
34 Après les avoir fait monter dans son logement, il leur servit à manger, heureux qu'il était d'avoir cru en Dieu avec toute sa fa- mille.
Then he brought them into his home and set a meal before them. So he and all his household rejoiced that they had come to believe in God.
35 Quand le jour fut venu, les préteurs envoyèrent dire par les licteurs: «Relâche ces gens-là.»
When daylight came, the magistrates sent their officers with the order: “Release those men.”
36 Et le geôlier annonça cette nouvelle à Paul: «Les préteurs, dit-il, ont envoyé l'ordre de vous relâcher; maintenant donc sortez, et allez en paix.»
The jailer informed Paul: “The magistrates have sent orders to release you. Now you may go on your way in peace.”
37 Mais Paul dit aux licteurs: «Quoi! après nous avoir publiquement battus de verges, sans jugement, nous qui sommes romains, ils nous ont jetés en prison, et maintenant ils nous font sortir secrètement! Non pas; mais qu'ils viennent eux-mêmes nous mettre en liberté.»
But Paul said to the officers, “They beat us publicly without a trial and threw us into prison, even though we are Roman citizens. And now do they want to send us away secretly? Absolutely not! Let them come themselves and escort us out!”
38 Les licteurs rapportèrent ces paroles aux préteurs, qui furent effrayés en apprenant que ces hommes étaient romains.
So the officers relayed this message to the magistrates, who were alarmed to hear that Paul and Silas were Roman citizens.
39 Ils vinrent leur parler, et, en les élargissant, ils les prièrent de quitter la ville.
They came to appease them and led them out, requesting that they leave the city.
40 Au sortir de la prison, les apôtres entrèrent chez Lydie, et, après avoir vu et encouragé les frères, ils partirent.
After Paul and Silas came out of the prison, they went to Lydia’s house to see the brothers and encourage them. Then they left the city.
