1 Timothée 1
1 Paul, Apôtre de Jésus-Christ par l'ordre de Dieu, notre Sauveur, et de Jésus-Christ, notre espérance,
From Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the appointment of God, our Savior, and Christ Jesus, our hope.
2 à Timothée mon véritable enfant en la foi: que la grâce, la miséricorde et la paix te soient données par Dieu, notre Père, et par Jésus-Christ, notre Seigneur!
To Timothy, my true child in the faith: May God, the Father, and Christ Jesus, our Lord, bless you, and be merciful to you, and give you peace.
3 Je te renouvelle l'invitation que je te fis en partant pour la Macédoine, de rester à Éphèse, afin d'enjoindre à certaines personnes de ne pas enseigner de fausses doctrines,
I beg you, as I did when I was on my way into Macedonia, to remain at Ephesus; so that you may instruct certain people there not to teach new and strange doctrines,
4 et de ne pas s'attacher à des fables et à des généalogies sans fin, qui sont une source de disputes, plutôt qu'elles n'avancent le règne de Dieu, qui repose sur la foi.
nor to devote their attention to legends and interminable genealogies, which tend to give rise to argument rather than to further that divine plan which is revealed in the faith.
5 Le but du Commandement, c'est la charité qui vient d'un coeur pur, d'une bonne conscience et d'une foi sincère.
The object of all instruction is to call forth that love which comes from a pure heart, a clear conscience, and a sincere faith.
6 Quelques-uns, ayant perdu ces choses de vue, sont tombés dans le bavardage,
And it is because they have not aimed at these things that the attention of certain people has been diverted to unprofitable subjects.
7 tout en ayant la prétention d'être des docteurs de la loi, quoiqu'ils ne comprennent ni ce qu'ils disent, ni ce qu'ils certifient.
They want to be teachers of the Law, and yet do not understand either the words they use, or the subjects on which they speak so confidently.
8 Nous savons que la loi est bonne, pourvu qu'on en fasse un usage légitime,
We know, of course, that the Law is excellent, when used legitimately,
9 et qu'on retienne bien qu'elle n'est pas faite pour le juste, mais pour les hommes sans frein ni règle, pour les impies et les pécheurs, pour les scélérats et les profanes, pour les parricides, pour les meurtriers,
by one who recognizes that laws were not made for good people, but for the lawless and disorderly, for irreligious and wicked people, for those who are irreverent and profane, for those who ill-treat their fathers or mothers, for murderers,
10 pour les libertins, pour les infâmes, pour les voleurs d'hommes, pour les menteurs, pour les parjures et pour quiconque enfreint la discipline morale.
for the immoral, for perverts, for slave traders, for liars, for perjurers, and for whatever else is opposed to sound Christian teaching –
11 Ainsi l'enseigne l'évangile, où resplendit la gloire du Dieu souverainement heureux. Cet évangile m'a été confié,
as is taught in the glorious good news of the ever-blessed God, with which I was entrusted.
12 et je rends grâce à Jésus-Christ, notre Seigneur, qui m'a fortifié, de ce qu'il m'a jugé fidèle, en m'appelant au ministère,
I am thankful to Christ Jesus, our Lord, who has been my strength, for showing that he thought me worthy of trust by appointing me to his ministry,
13 quoique je fusse auparavant un blasphémateur, un persécuteur, un homme violent. Mais j'ai obtenu miséricorde, parce que j'agissais par ignorance dans mon incrédulité,
though I once used to blaspheme, and to persecute, and to insult. Yet mercy was shown me, because I acted in ignorance, while still an unbeliever;
14 et la grâce de notre Seigneur a surabondé avec la foi en Jésus-Christ et l'amour pour lui.
and the loving kindness of our Lord was boundless, and filled me with that faith and love which come from union with Christ Jesus.
15 C'est une vérité certaine et digne de toute créance, que Jésus-Christ est venu dans le monde pour sauver les pécheurs, dont je suis le premier.
How true the saying is, and worthy of the fullest acceptance, that ‘Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners’! And there is no greater sinner than I!
16 Mais j'ai obtenu miséricorde, précisément afin que Jésus-Christ fît voir en moi, le premier, sa longanimité tout entière, et que je servisse d'exemple à ceux qui, à l'avenir, mettront leur confiance en lui pour avoir la vie éternelle. (aiōnios g166)
Yet mercy was shown me for the express purpose that Christ Jesus might exhibit in my case, beyond all others, his exhaustless patience, as an example for those who were afterward to believe on him and attain eternal life. (aiōnios g166)
17 Au Roi des siècles, immortel, invisible, seul Dieu, soient honneur et gloire aux siècles des siècles! Amen! (aiōn g165)
To the eternal King, ever-living, invisible, the one God, be ascribed honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen. (aiōn g165)
18 Ce que je te recommande, Timothée, mon enfant, c'est que, suivant les prédictions qu'on a faites autrefois à ton sujet, tu combattes le bon combat, et que tu les réalises
This, then, is the charge that I lay on you, Timothy, my child, in accordance with what was predicted of you – Fight the good fight in the spirit of those predictions,
19 en gardant la foi et une bonne conscience. C'est pour avoir renoncé à cette bonne conscience, que quelques-uns ont fait naufrage par rapport à la foi:
with faith, and with a clear conscience; and it is because they have thrust this aside, that, as regards the faith, some have wrecked their lives.
20 de ce nombre sont Hyménée et Alexandre, que j'ai livrés à Satan, afin qu'ils apprennent à ne point blasphémer.
Hymenaeus and Alexander are instances – the men whom I delivered over to Satan so that they might be taught not to blaspheme.
