Romains 11
1 Je demande donc: Dieu a-t-il rejeté son peuple? à Dieu ne plaise! Car je suis aussi Israëlite, de la postérité d'Abraham, de la Tribu de Benjamin.
So I say, Has God put his people on one side? Let there be no such thought. For I am of Israel, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin.
2 Dieu n'a point rejeté son peuple, lequel il a auparavant connu. Et ne savez-vous pas ce que l'Ecriture dit d'Elie, comment il a fait requête à Dieu contre Israël, disant:
God has not put away the people of his selection. Or have you no knowledge of what is said about Elijah in the holy Writings? how he says words to God against Israel,
3 Seigneur, ils ont tué tes Prophètes, et ils ont démoli tes autels, et je suis demeuré moi seul; et ils tâchent à m'ôter la vie.
Lord, they have put your prophets to death, and made waste your altars, and now I am the last, and they are searching for me to take away my life.
4 Mais que lui fut-il répondu de Dieu? je me suis réservé sept mille hommes, qui n'ont point fléchi le genou devant Bahal.
But what answer does God make to him? I have still seven thousand men whose knees have not been bent to Baal.
5 Ainsi donc il y a aussi à présent un résidu selon l'élection de la grâce.
In the same way, there are at this present time some who are marked out by the selection of grace.
6 Or si c'est par la grâce, ce n'est plus par les œuvres; autrement la grâce n'est plus la grâce. Mais si c'est par les œuvres, ce n'est plus par la grâce; autrement l'œuvre n'est plus une œuvre.
But if it is of grace, then it is no longer of works: or grace would not be grace.
7 Quoi donc? c'est que ce qu'Israël cherchait, il ne l'a point obtenu; mais l'élection l'a obtenu, et les autres ont été endurcis;
What then? That which Israel was searching for he did not get, but those of the selection got it and the rest were made hard.
8 Ainsi qu'il est écrit: Dieu leur a donné un esprit assoupi, [et] des yeux pour ne point voir, et des oreilles pour ne point ouïr, jusqu'au jour présent.
As it was said in the holy Writings, God gave them a spirit of sleep, eyes which might not see, and ears which have no hearing, to this day.
9 Et David dit: que leur table leur soit un filet, un piège, une occasion de chute, et cela pour leur récompense.
And David says, Let their table be made a net for taking them, and a stone in their way, and a punishment:
10 Que leurs yeux soient obscurcis pour ne point voir; et courbe continuellement leur dos.
Let their eyes be made dark so that they may not see, and let their back be bent down at all times.
11 Mais je demande: ont-ils bronché pour tomber? nullement! mais par leur chute le salut est accordé aux Gentils, pour les exciter à la jalousie.
So I say, Were their steps made hard in order that they might have a fall? In no way: but by their fall salvation has come to the Gentiles, so that they might be moved to envy.
12 Or si leur chute est la richesse du monde, et leur diminution la richesse des Gentils, combien plus le sera leur abondance?
Now, if their fall is the wealth of the world, and their loss the wealth of the Gentiles, how much greater will be the glory when they are made full?
13 Car je parle à vous, Gentils; certes en tant que je suis Apôtre des Gentils, je rends honorable mon ministère;
But I say to you, Gentiles, in so far as I am the Apostle of the Gentiles, I make much of my position:
14 [Pour voir] si en quelque façon je puis exciter ceux de ma nation à la jalousie, et en sauver quelques-uns.
If in any way those who are of my flesh may be moved to envy, so that some of them may get salvation by me.
15 Car si leur rejection est la réconciliation du monde, quelle sera leur réception sinon une vie d'entre les morts?
For, if by their putting away, the rest of men have been made friends with God, what will their coming back again be, but life from the dead?
16 Or si les prémices sont saintes, la masse l'est aussi; et si la racine est sainte, les branches le sont aussi.
And if the first-fruit is holy, so is the mass: and if the root is holy, so are the branches.
17 Que si quelques-unes des branches ont été retranchées, et si toi qui étais un olivier sauvage, as été enté en leur place, et fait participant de la racine et de la graisse de l'olivier;
But if some of the branches were broken off, and you, an olive-tree of the fields, were put in among them, and were given a part with them in the root by which the olive-tree is made fertile,
18 Ne te glorifie pas contre les branches; car si tu te glorifies, ce n'est pas toi qui portes la racine, mais c'est la racine qui te porte.
Do not be uplifted in pride over the branches: because it is not you who are the support of the root, but it is by the root that you are supported.
19 Mais tu diras: les branches ont été retranchées, afin que j'y fusse enté.
You will say, Branches were broken off so that I might be put in.
20 C'est bien dit, elles ont été retranchées à cause de leur incrédulité, et tu es debout par la foi: ne t'élève [donc] point par orgueil, mais crains.
Truly, because they had no faith they were broken off, and you have your place by reason of your faith. Do not be lifted up in pride, but have fear;
21 Car si Dieu n'a point épargné les branches naturelles, [prends garde] qu'il ne t'épargne point aussi.
For, if God did not have mercy on the natural branches, he will not have mercy on you.
22 Considère donc la bonté et la sévérité de Dieu: la sévérité sur ceux qui sont tombés; et la bonté envers toi, si tu persévères en sa bonté: car autrement tu seras aussi coupé.
See then that God is good but his rules are fixed: to those who were put away he was hard, but to you he has been good, on the condition that you keep in his mercy; if not, you will be cut off as they were.
23 Et eux-mêmes aussi, s'ils ne persistent point dans leur incrédulité, ils seront entés: car Dieu est puissant pour les enter de nouveau.
And they, if they do not go on without faith, will be united to the tree again, because God is able to put them in again.
24 Car si tu as été coupé de l'olivier qui de sa nature était sauvage, et as été enté contre la nature sur l'olivier franc, combien plus ceux qui le sont selon la nature, seront-ils entés sur leur propre olivier?
For if you were cut out of a field olive-tree, and against the natural use were united to a good olive-tree, how much more will these, the natural branches, be united again with the olive-tree which was theirs?
25 Car mes frères, je ne veux pas que vous ignoriez ce mystère, afin que vous ne vous en fassiez pas accroire, c'est qu'il est arrivé de l'endurcissement en Israël dans une partie, jusqu'à ce que la plénitude des Gentils soit entrée;
For it is my desire, brothers, that this secret may be clear to you, so that you may not have pride in your knowledge, that Israel has been made hard in part, till all the Gentiles have come in;
26 Et ainsi tout Israël sera sauvé; selon ce qui est écrit: le Libérateur viendra de Sion, et il détournera de Jacob les infidélités;
And so all Israel will get salvation: as it is said in the holy Writings, There will come out of Zion the One who makes free; by him wrongdoing will be taken away from Jacob:
27 Et c'est là l'alliance que je ferai avec eux, lorsque j'ôterai leurs péchés.
And this is my agreement with them, when I will take away their sins.
28 Ils sont certes ennemis par rapport à l'Evangile, à cause de vous; mais ils sont bien-aimés eu égard à l'élection, à cause des pères.
As far as the good news is in question, they are cut off from God on account of you, but as far as the selection is in question, they are loved on account of the fathers.
29 Car les dons et la vocation de Dieu sont sans repentance.
Because God's selection and his mercies may not be changed.
30 Or comme vous avez été vous-mêmes autrefois rebelles à Dieu, et que maintenant vous avez obtenu miséricorde par la rébellion de ceux-ci.
For as you, in time past, were not under the rule of God, but now have got mercy through their turning away,
31 Ceux-ci tout de même sont maintenant devenus rebelles, afin qu'ils obtiennent aussi miséricorde par la miséricorde qui vous a été faite.
So in the same way these have gone against the orders of God, so that by the mercy given to you they may now get mercy.
32 Car Dieu les a tous renfermés sous la rébellion, afin de faire miséricorde à tous. (eleēsē g1653)
For God has let them all go against his orders, so that he might have mercy on them all. (eleēsē g1653)
33 Ô profondeur des richesses et de la sagesse et de la connaissance de Dieu! que ses jugements sont incompréhensibles, et ses voies impossibles à trouver!
O how deep is the wealth of the wisdom and knowledge of God! no one is able to make discovery of his decisions, and his ways may not be searched out.
34 Car qui est-ce qui a connu la pensée du Seigneur? ou qui a été son conseiller?
Who has knowledge of the mind of the Lord? or who has taken part in his purposes?
35 Ou qui est-ce qui lui a donné le premier, et il lui sera rendu?
Or who has first given to him, and it will be given back to him again?
