Psaumes 78
1 Maskil d'Asaph. Mon peuple, écoute ma Loi, prêtez vos oreilles aux paroles de ma bouche.
The understanding of Asaph. O my people, attend to my law. Incline your ears to the words of my mouth.
2 J'ouvrirai ma bouche en similitudes: je manifesterai les choses notables du temps d'autrefois.
I will open my mouth in parables. I will speak about concepts that are from the beginning.
3 Lesquelles nous avons ouïes et connues, et que nos pères nous on racontées.
We have heard and known such great things, as our fathers have described to us.
4 Nous ne les cèlerons point à leurs enfants, [et] ils raconteront à la génération à venir les louanges de l'Eternel, et sa force, et ses merveilles qu'il a faites.
These things have not been hidden from their sons in any generation: declaring the praises of the Lord, and his virtues, and the wonders that he has done.
5 Car il a établi le témoignage en Jacob, et il a mis la Loi en Israël; et il donna charge à nos pères de les faire entendre à leurs enfants.
And he has received testimony with Jacob, and he has set a law within Israel. Such great things, he has commanded our fathers, so as to make these things known to their sons,
6 Afin que la génération à venir, les enfants, [dis-je], qui naîtraient, les connut, [et] qu'ils se missent en devoir de les raconter à leurs enfants;
so that another generation might know them, and so that the sons, who will be born and who will grow up, shall describe them to their sons.
7 Et afin qu'ils missent leur confiance en Dieu, et qu'ils n'oubliassent point les exploits du [Dieu] Fort, et qu'ils gardassent ses commandements.
So then, may they put their hope in God, and may they not forget the works of God, and may they seek his commandments.
8 Et qu'ils ne fussent point, comme leurs pères, une génération revêche et rebelle, une génération qui n'a point soumis son cœur, et l'esprit de laquelle n'a point été fidèle au [Dieu] Fort.
May they not become like their fathers, a perverse and exasperating generation: a generation that does not straighten their heart and whose spirit is not trustworthy with God.
9 Les enfants d'Ephraïm armés entre les archers, ont tourné le dos le jour de la bataille.
The sons of Ephraim, who bend and shoot the bow, have been turned back in the day of battle.
10 Ils n'ont point gardé l'alliance de Dieu, et ont refusé de marcher selon sa Loi.
They have not kept the covenant of God. And they were not willing to walk in his law.
11 Et ils ont mis en oubli ses exploits et ses merveilles qu'il leur avait fait voir.
And they have been forgetful of his benefits, and of his miracle, which he revealed to them.
12 Il a fait des miracles en la présence de leurs pères au pays d'Egypte, au territoire de Tsohan.
He performed miracles in the sight of their fathers, in the land of Egypt, in the field of Tanis.
13 Il a fendu la mer, et les a fait passer au travers, et il a fait arrêter les eaux comme un monceau [de pierre].
He broke the sea and he led them through. And he stationed the waters, as if in a vessel.
14 Et il les a conduits de jour par la nuée, et toute la nuit par une lumière de feu.
And he led them with a cloud by day, and with illumination by fire throughout the night.
15 Il a fendu les rochers au désert, et leur a donné abondamment à boire, comme [s'il eût puisé] des abîmes.
He broke through the rock in the wasteland, and he gave them to drink, as if from the great abyss.
16 Il a fait, dis-je, sortir des ruisseaux de la roche, et en a fait découler des eaux comme des rivières.
He brought forth water from the rock, and he conducted the waters, as if they were rivers.
17 Toutefois ils continuèrent à pécher contre lui, irritant le Souverain au désert.
And yet, they continued to sin against him. In a waterless place, they provoked the Most High with resentment.
18 Et ils tentèrent le [Dieu] Fort dans leurs cœurs, en demandant de la viande qui flattât leur appétit.
And they tempted God in their hearts, by asking for food according to their desires.
19 Ils parlèrent contre Dieu, disant: le [Dieu] Fort nous pourrait-il dresser une table en ce désert?
And they spoke badly about God. They said, “Would God be able to prepare a table in the desert?
20 Voilà, [dirent-ils], il a frappé le rocher, et les eaux en sont découlées, et il en est sorti des torrents abondamment, mais pourrait-il aussi nous donner du pain? apprêterait-il bien de la viande à son peuple?
He struck the rock, and so waters flowed and the torrents flooded, but would even he be able to provide bread, or provide a table, for his people?”
21 C'est pourquoi l'Eternel les ayant ouïs, se mit en grande colère, et le feu s'embrasa contre Jacob, et sa colère s'excita contre Israël.
Therefore, the Lord heard, and he was dismayed, and a fire was kindled within Jacob, and an anger ascended into Israel.
22 Parce qu'ils n'avaient point cru en Dieu, et ne s'étaient point confiés en sa délivrance.
For they neither put their trust in God, nor did they hope in his salvation.
23 Bien qu'il eût donné commandement aux nuées d'en haut, et qu'il eût ouvert les portes des cieux;
And he commanded the clouds from above, and he opened the doors of heaven.
24 Et qu'il eût fait pleuvoir la manne sur eux afin qu'ils en mangeassent, et qu'il leur eût donné le froment des cieux;
And he rained down manna upon them to eat, and he gave them the bread of heaven.
25 Tellement que chacun mangeait du pain des puissants. Il leur envoya donc de la viande pour s'en rassasier.
Man ate the bread of Angels. He sent them provisions in abundance.
26 Il excita dans les cieux le vent d'Orient, et il amena par sa force le vent du midi.
He transferred the south wind from heaven, and, in his virtue, he brought in the Southwest wind.
27 Et il fit pleuvoir sur eux de la chair comme de la poussière, et des oiseaux volants, en une quantité pareille au sable de la mer.
And he rained down flesh upon them, as if it were dust, and feathered birds, as if they were the sand of the sea.
28 Et il la fit tomber au milieu de leur camp, [et] autour de leurs pavillons.
And they fell down in the midst of their camp, encircling their tabernacles.
29 Et ils en mangèrent, et en furent pleinement rassasiés, car il avait accompli leur souhait.
And they ate until they were greatly satisfied, and he brought to them according to their desires.
30 [Mais] ils n'en avaient pas encore perdu l'envie, et leur viande était encore dans leur bouche.
They were not cheated out of what they wanted. Their food was still in their mouth,
31 Quand la colère de Dieu s'excita contre eux, et qu'il mit à mort les gras d'entre eux, et abattit les gens d'élite d'Israël.
and then the wrath of God came upon them. And he slew the fat ones among them, and he impeded the elect of Israel.
32 Nonobstant cela, ils péchèrent encore, et n'ajoutèrent point de foi à ses merveilles.
In all these things, they continued to sin, and they were not trustworthy with his miracles.
33 C'est pourquoi il consuma soudainement leurs jours, et leurs années promptement.
And their days faded away into vanity, and their years with haste.
34 Quand il les mettait à mort, alors ils le recherchaient, ils se repentaient, et ils cherchaient le [Dieu] Fort dès le matin.
When he slew them, then they sought him. And they returned, and they drew near to him in the early morning.
35 Et ils se souvenaient que Dieu était leur rocher, et que le [Dieu] Fort et Souverain était celui qui les délivrait.
And they were mindful that God is their helper and that the Most High God is their redeemer.
36 Mais ils faisaient beau semblant de leur bouche, et ils lui mentaient de leur langue;
And they chose him with their mouth, and then they lied to him with their tongue.
37 Car leur cœur n'était point droit envers lui, et ils ne furent point fidèles en son alliance.
For their heart was not upright with him, nor have they been living faithfully in his covenant.
38 Toutefois, comme il est pitoyable, il pardonna leur iniquité, tellement qu'il ne les détruisit point, mais il apaisa souvent sa colère, et n'émut point toute sa fureur.
Yet he is merciful, and he will pardon their sins. And he will not destroy them. And he has abundantly turned aside his own wrath. And he did not enflame his wrath entirely.
39 Et il se souvint qu'ils n'étaient que chair, qu'un vent qui passe, et qui ne revient point.
And he remembered that they are flesh: with a spirit that goes forth and does not return.
40 Combien de fois l'ont-ils irrité au désert, et combien de fois l'ont-ils ennuyé dans ce lieu inhabitable?
How often did they provoke him in the desert and stir him to wrath in a waterless place?
41 Car coup sur coup ils tentaient le [Dieu] Fort; et bornaient le Saint d'Israël.
And they turned back and tempted God, and they exasperated the Holy One of Israel.
42 Ils ne se sont point souvenus de sa main, ni du jour qu'il les avait délivrés de la main de celui qui les affligeait.
They did not remember his hand, in the day that he redeemed them from the hand of the one troubling them.
43 [Ils ne se sont point souvenus] de celui qui avait fait ses signes en Egypte, et ses miracles au territoire de Tsohan:
Thus, he positioned his signs in Egypt and his wonders in the field of Tanis.
44 Et qui avait changé en sang leurs rivières et leurs ruisseaux, afin qu'ils n'en pussent point boire.
And he turned their rivers into blood, along with their rain showers, so that they could not drink.
45 Et qui avait envoyé contre eux une mêlée de bêtes, qui les mangèrent; et des grenouilles, qui les détruisirent.
He sent among them the common fly, and it devoured them, and the frog, and it scattered them.
46 Et qui avait donné leurs fruits aux vermisseaux, et leur travail aux sauterelles.
And he gave up their fruits to mold and their labors to the locust.
47 Qui avait détruit leurs vignes par la grêle, et leurs sycomores par les orages.
And he slew their vineyards with hail and their mulberry trees with severe frost.
48 Et qui avait livré leur bétail à la grêle, et leurs troupeaux aux foudres étincelantes.
And he delivered their cattle to the hail and their possessions to fire.
49 Qui avait envoyé sur eux l'ardeur de sa colère, grande colère, indignation et détresse, [qui sont] un envoi de messagers de maux.
And he sent the wrath of his indignation among them: indignation and wrath and tribulation, sent forth by evil angels.
50 Qui avait dressé le chemin à sa colère, et n'avait point retiré leur âme de la mort; et qui avait livré leur bétail à la mortalité.
He made way for the path of his anger. He did not spare their souls from death. And he enclosed their beasts of burden in death.
51 Et qui avait frappé tout premier-né en Egypte, les prémices de la vigueur dans les tentes de Cam.
And he struck all the first-born in the land of Egypt: the first-fruits of all their labor in the tabernacles of Ham.
52 Qui avait fait partir son peuple comme des brebis; et qui l'avait mené par le désert comme un troupeau.
And he took away his own people like sheep, and he led them through the wilderness like a flock.
53 Et qui les avait conduits sûrement, et sans qu ils eussent aucune frayeur, là où la mer couvrit leurs ennemis.
And he led them out in hope, and they did not fear. And the sea covered their enemies.
54 Et qui les avait introduits en la contrée de sa Sainteté, [savoir] en cette montagne que sa droite a conquise.
And he led them to the mountain of his sanctification: the mountain that his right hand had acquired. And he cast out the Gentiles before their face. And he divided their land by lot to them, with a line of distribution.
55 Et qui avait chassé de devant eux les nations qu'il leur a fait tomber en lot d'héritage, et avait fait habiter les Tribus d'Israël dans les tentes de ces nations.
And he caused the tribes of Israel to dwell in their tabernacles.
56 Mais ils ont tenté et irrité le Dieu Souverain, et n'ont point gardé ses témoignages.
Yet they tempted and aggravated God Most High, and they did not keep his testaments.
57 Et ils se sont retirés en arrière, et se sont portés infidèlement, ainsi que leurs pères; ils se sont renversés comme un arc qui trompe.
And they turned themselves aside, and they did not serve the covenant. In the same manner as their fathers, they were turned backwards, like a crooked bow.
58 Et ils l'ont provoqué à la colère par leurs hauts lieux, et l'ont ému à la jalousie par leurs images taillées.
They impelled him to anger on their hills, and they provoked him to rivalry with their graven images.
59 Dieu l'a ouï, et s'est mis en grande colère, et il a fort méprisé Israël.
God listened, and he spurned them, and he reduced Israel greatly, almost to nothing.
60 Et il a abandonné le pavillon de Silo, le Tabernacle où il habitait entre les hommes.
And he rejected the tabernacle of Shiloh, his tabernacle where he had dwelt among men.
61 Et il a livré en captivité sa force et son ornement entre les mains de l'ennemi.
And he delivered their virtue into captivity, and their beauty into the hands of the enemy.
62 Et il a livré son peuple à l'épée et s'est mis en grande colère contre son héritage.
And he enclosed his people with the sword, and he spurned his inheritance.
63 Le feu a consumé leurs gens d'élite, et leurs vierges n'ont point été louées.
Fire consumed their young men, and their virgins were not lamented.
64 Leurs Sacrificateurs sont tombés par l'épée, et leurs veuves ne les ont point pleuré.
Their priests fell by the sword, and their widows did not weep.
65 Puis le Seigneur s'est réveillé comme un homme qui se serait endormi, et comme un puissant homme qui s'écrie ayant encore le vin dans la tête.
And the Lord was awakened, as if out of sleep, and like a powerful man impaired by wine.
66 Et il a frappé ses adversaires par derrière, et les a mis en opprobre perpétuel.
And he struck his enemies on the back. He gave them over to everlasting disgrace.
67 Mais il a dédaigné le Tabernacle de Joseph, et n'a point choisi la Tribu d'Ephraïm.
And he rejected the tabernacle of Joseph, and he did not choose the tribe of Ephraim.
68 Mais il a choisi la Tribu de Juda, la montagne de Sion, laquelle il aime;
But he chose the tribe of Judah: mount Zion, which he loved.
69 Et il a bâti son Sanctuaire comme [des bâtiments] haut élevés, et l'a établi comme la terre qu'il a fondée pour toujours.
And he built up his sanctuary, like a single-horned beast, in the land that he founded for all ages.
70 Et il a choisi David, son serviteur, et l'a pris des parcs des brebis;
And he chose his servant David, and he took him from the flocks of the sheep: he received him from following the ewes with their young,
71 [Il l'a pris, dis-je, ] d'après les brebis qui allaitent, et l'a amené pour paître Jacob son peuple, et Israël son héritage.
in order to pasture Jacob his servant and Israel his inheritance.
72 Aussi les a-t-il fait repus selon l'intégrité de son cœur, et conduits par la sage direction de ses mains.
And he fed them with the innocence of his heart. And he led them with the understanding of his hands.
