Juges 18
1 En ce temps-là il n'y avait point de Roi en Israël, et en ce même temps la tribu de Dan cherchait un héritage pour soi afin d'y demeurer; car jusqu'à ce temps-là il ne lui en était point échu entre les Tribus d'Israël pour le posséder.
In those days there was no king in Israel, and in those days the tribe of the Danites sought for themselves an inheritance to dwell in; for to that day [their lot] had not fallen to them for inheritance among the tribes of Israel.
2 C'est pourquoi les enfants de Dan envoyèrent de leur famille cinq hommes, d'une et d'autre qualité, gens vaillants, de Tsorah et d'Estaol, pour reconnaître le pays, et le reconnaître exactement; et leur dirent: Allez [et] reconnaissez exactement le pays. Ils vinrent donc en la montagne d'Ephraïm jusqu'à la maison de Mica, et y passèrent la nuit.
And the children of Dan sent of their family five men of their whole number, men of valour, from Zoreah and from Eshtaol, to spy out the land, and to examine it; and they said to them, Go, examine the land. And they came to the hill-country of Ephraim, to the house of Micah, and lodged there.
3 Et quand ils furent auprès de la maison de Mica, ils reconnurent la voix du jeune homme Lévite; et s'étant détournés vers cette maison-là, ils lui dirent: Qui t'a amené ici, qu'y fais-tu? et qu'as-tu ici?
When they were by the house of Micah, they knew the voice of the young man, the Levite; and they turned in thither, and said to him, Who brought thee hither? and what doest thou in this [place]? and what hast thou here?
4 Et il répondit: Mica a fait pour moi telle et telle chose; il m'a donné des gages et je lui sers de Sacrificateur.
And he said to them, Thus and thus has Micah done to me; and he has hired me, and I am his priest.
5 Ils dirent encore: Nous te prions de consulter Dieu, afin que nous sachions si le voyage que nous entreprenons prospérera.
And they said to him, Inquire, we pray thee, of God, that we may know whether our way on which we go shall be prosperous.
6 Et le Sacrificateur leur dit: Allez en paix; l'Eternel a devant ses yeux le voyage que vous entreprenez.
And the priest said to them, Go in peace: before Jehovah is your way on which ye go.
7 Ces cinq hommes donc s'en allèrent, et arrivèrent à Laïs, et ils virent que le peuple de cette ville habitait en assurance, et vivait en repos, et se croyait en sûreté, à la façon des Sidoniens; et qu'il n'y avait personne au pays qui leur fît de la peine en aucune chose, parce qu'ils étaient libres de toute ancienneté; et aussi ils étaient éloignés des Sidoniens, et n'avaient commerce avec personne.
And the five men departed, and came to Laish; and they saw the people that were therein, dwelling securely, after the manner of the Zidonians, quiet and secure; and no one was in the land who possessed authority, that might put [them] to shame in anything; and they were far from the Zidonians, and had nothing to do with [any] man.
8 Puis étant revenus à leurs frères à Tsorah [et] à Estaol, leurs frères leur dirent: Que [rapportez]-vous?
— And they came to their brethren at Zoreah and Eshtaol. And their brethren said to them, What [say] ye?
9 Et ils répondirent: Allons, montons contr'eux; car nous avons vu le pays, et nous l'avons trouvé très-bon; et vous êtes sans rien faire? ne soyez point paresseux à partir pour aller posséder le pays.
And they said, Arise, and let us go up against them; for we have seen the land, and behold, it is very good; and ye are still! Be not slothful to go, to enter to take possession of the land.
10 Quand vous y entrerez, vous viendrez vers un peuple qui se tient assuré, et en un pays de grande étendue, car Dieu l'a livré entre vos mains; c'est un lieu où il ne manque rien de tout ce qui est sur la terre.
When ye go in, ye shall come to a people secure, and the land is spacious in every direction; for God has given it into your hands; [it is] a place where there is no want of anything that is on the earth.
11 Il partit donc de là, [savoir] de Tsorah et d'Estaol, six cents hommes armés de la famille de Dan.
And there went from thence of the family of the Danites, out of Zoreah and out of Eshtaol, six hundred men girded with weapons of war.
12 Et montant, ils campèrent à Kirjath-jéharim, qui est en Juda; c'est pourquoi on a appelé ce lieu-là Mahané-dan, jusqu'à ce jour, et il est derrière Kirjath-jéharim.
And they went up and encamped in Kirjath-jearim, in Judah; therefore they call that place Mahaneh-Dan to this day: behold, it is behind Kirjath-jearim.
13 Puis de là ils passèrent à la montagne d'Ephraïm, et arrivèrent à la maison de Mica.
And they passed thence to mount Ephraim, and came to the house of Micah.
14 Alors les cinq hommes qui étaient allés pour reconnaître le pays de Laïs, prenant la parole, dirent à leurs frères: Savez-vous bien qu'en ces maisons il y a un Ephod et des Théraphims, une image de taille et une de fonte? Voyez donc maintenant ce que vous aurez à faire.
Then the five men that had gone to spy out the country of Laish spoke and said to their brethren, Do ye know that there is in these houses an ephod, and teraphim, and a graven image, and a molten image? And now ye know what to do.
15 Alors ils se détournèrent vers ce lieu-là, et vinrent en la maison où était le jeune homme Lévite, savoir en la maison de Mica, et le saluèrent.
And they turned thither, and came to the house of the young man the Levite, the house of Micah, and inquired after his welfare.
16 Or les six cents hommes des enfants de Dan, qui étaient sous les armes, s'arrêtèrent à l'entrée de la porte;
And the six hundred men of the children of Dan, girded with their weapons of war, stood at the entrance of the gate.
17 Mais les cinq hommes qui étaient allés pour reconnaître le pays, montèrent et entrèrent dans la maison, et prirent l'imagé taillée, l'Ephod, les Théraphims, et l'image de fonte, pendant que le Sacrificateur était à l'entrée de la porte, avec les six cents hommes armés.
And the five men that had gone to spy out the land went up, entered in thither, [and] took the graven image, and the ephod, and the teraphim, and the molten image; and the priest stood at the entrance of the gate with the six hundred men that were girded with weapons of war.
18 Etant donc entrés dans la maison de Mica, ils prirent l'image taillée, l'Ephod, les Théraphims, et l'image de fonte. Et le Sacrificateur leur dit: Que faites-vous?
And these came into Micah's house, and took the carved image, the ephod, and the teraphim, and the molten image. And the priest said to them, What do ye?
19 Et ils lui dirent: Tais-toi, et mets ta main sur ta bouche, et viens avec nous, et sois-nous pour père et pour Sacrificateur. Lequel te vaut-il mieux, d'être Sacrificateur de la maison d'un homme seul, ou d'être Sacrificateur d'une Tribu et d'une famille en Israël?
And they said to him, Hold thy peace, lay thy hand upon thy mouth, and go with us, and be to us a father and a priest. Is it better for thee to be a priest for the house of one man, or to be priest for a tribe and a family in Israel?
20 Et le Sacrificateur en eut de la joie en son cœur, et ayant pris l'Ephod, les Théraphims, et l'image taillée, il se mit au milieu du peuple.
Then the priest's heart was glad, and he took the ephod, and the teraphim, and the graven image, and went in the midst of the people.
21 Après quoi ils retournèrent et reprirent leur chemin, et mirent devant eux les petits enfants, le bétail, et le bagage.
And they turned and departed, and put the little ones and the cattle and the baggage before them.
22 Et quand ils furent loin de la maison de Mica, ceux qui [demeuraient] dans les maisons voisines de celle de Mica furent assemblés à grand cri; et ils atteignirent les enfants de Dan.
They were already far from the house of Micah, when the men that were in the houses near to Micah's house were gathered together, and overtook the children of Dan.
23 Et ils crièrent après eux; mais eux tournant visage dirent à Mica: Qu'as-tu, que tu te sois ainsi écrié pour amasser des gens?
And they cried to the children of Dan. And they turned their faces, and said to Micah, What aileth thee, that thou comest with such a company?
24 Il répondit: Vous avez enlevé mes dieux que j'avais faits, vous [avez pris] le Sacrificateur, et vous en êtes allés. Et que me reste-t-il? Comment donc me dites-vous: Qu'as-tu?
And he said, Ye have taken away my gods which I made, and the priest, and ye are gone away; and what have I more? and what is this that ye say to me, What aileth thee?
25 Et les enfants de Dan lui dirent: Ne fais point entendre ta voix après nous, de peur que ces gens en colère ne se jettent sur vous, et que vous n'y laissiez la vie, toi, et tous ceux de ta famille.
And the children of Dan said to him, Let not thy voice be heard among us, lest men of exasperated spirit run upon you, and thou lose thy life and the lives of thy household.
26 Les enfants donc de Dan continuèrent leur chemin, mais Mica ayant vu qu'ils étaient plus forts que lui, tourna visage, et s'en revint en sa maison.
And the children of Dan went their way; and Micah saw that they were too strong for him, and he turned and went back to his house.
27 Ainsi ayant pris les choses que Mica avait faites, et le Sacrificateur qu'il avait, ils arrivèrent à Laïs, vers un peuple qui était en repos, et qui se tenait assuré, et ils les firent passer au fil de l'épée, et ayant mis le feu dans la ville, ils la brûlèrent.
And they took that which Micah had made, and the priest that he had had, and came upon Laish, upon a people quiet and secure; and they smote them with the edge of the sword, and burned the city with fire.
28 Et il n'y eut personne qui la délivrât; car elle était loin de Sidon, et n'avait commerce avec personne, et elle était située en la vallée qui appartenait au [pays de] Beth-réhob: puis ils bâtirent [là] une ville, et y habitèrent.
And there was no deliverer, for it was far from Zidon, and they had nothing to do with [any] man; and it [lay] in the valley that is by Beth-rehob. And they built the city and dwelt therein.
29 Et ils nommèrent cette ville-là, Dan; selon le nom de Dan leur père qui était né à Israël, au lieu que la ville avait nom auparavant Laïs.
And they called the name of the city Dan, after the name of Dan their father, who was born to Israel; howbeit Laish was the name of the city at the first.
30 Et les enfants de Dan se dressèrent cette image taillée, et Jonathan fils de Guerson, fils de Manassé, lui et ses enfants furent Sacrificateurs pour la Tribu de Dan jusqu'au jour qu'elle partit du pays.
And the children of Dan set up the graven image; and Jehonathan, the son of Gershom, the son of Moses; he and his sons were priests to the tribe of Dan until the day of the captivity of the land.
31 Ils y dressèrent donc l'image taillée que Mica avait faite, tout le temps que la maison de Dieu fut à Silo.
And they set up for themselves Micah's graven image, which he had made, all the time that the house of God was in Shiloh.
