Josué 9

1 Or dès que tous les Rois qui étaient au deçà du Jourdain, en la montagne, et en la plaine, et sur tout le rivage de la grande mer, jusques contre le Liban, [savoir] les Héthiens, les Amorrhéens, les Cananéens, les Phérésiens, les Héviens, et les Jébusiens, eurent appris [ces choses],

And when all the Kings that were beyonde Iorden, in the mountaines and in the valleis, and by all the coastes of the great Sea ouer against Lebanon (as the Hittites, and the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hiuites, and the Iebusites) heard thereof,

2 Ils s'assemblèrent tous pour faire la guerre à Josué et à Israël, d'un commun accord.

They gathered themselues together, to fight against Ioshua, and against Israel with one accord.

3 Mais les habitants de Gabaon ayant entendu ce que Josué avait fait à Jérico, et à Haï;

But the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Ioshua had done vnto Iericho, and to Ai.

4 Usèrent de finesse, car ils se mirent en chemin, et contrefirent les ambassadeurs, et prirent de vieux sacs sur leurs ânes, et de vieux outres de vin qui avaient été rompus, et qui étaient rapetassés.

And therefore they wrought craftily: for they went, and fayned themselues ambassadours, and tooke olde sackes vpon their asses, and olde bottels for wine, both rent and bound vp,

5 Et [ils avaient] en leurs pieds de vieux souliers raccommodés, et de vieux habits sur eux; et tout le pain de leur provision était sec, et moisi.

And olde shoes and clouted vpon their feete: also the raiment vpon them was old, and all their prouision of bread was dried, and mouled.

6 Et étant venus à Josué au camp en Guilgal, ils lui dirent, et aux principaux d'Israël: Nous sommes venus d'un pays éloigné; maintenant donc traitez alliance avec nous.

So they came vnto Ioshua into the hoste to Gilgal, and said vnto him, and vnto the men of Israel, Wee be come from a farre countrey: nowe therefore make a league with vs.

7 Et les principaux d'Israël répondirent à ces Héviens: Peut-être que vous habitez parmi nous; et comment traiterions-nous alliance avec vous?

Then the men of Israel said vnto the Hiuites, It may be that thou dwellest among vs, how then can I make a league with thee?

8 Mais ils dirent à Josué: Nous sommes tes serviteurs. Alors Josué leur dit: Qui êtes-vous? et d'où venez-vous?

And they said vnto Ioshua, We are thy seruants. Then Ioshua saide vnto them, Who are ye? and whence come ye?

9 Ils lui répondirent: Tes serviteurs sont venus d'un pays fort éloigné, sur la renommée de l'Eternel ton Dieu; car nous avons entendu sa renommée, et toutes les choses qu'il a faites en Egypte;

And they answered him, From a very farre countrey thy seruants are come for the Name of the Lord thy God: for we haue heard his fame and all that he hath done in Egypt,

10 Et tout ce qu'il a fait aux deux Rois des Amorrhéens, qui étaient au delà du Jourdain, à Sihon Roi de Hesbon, et à Hog Roi de Basan qui [demeurait] à Hastaroth.

And all that he hath done to the two Kings of the Amorites that were beyonde Iorden, to Sihon King of Heshbon, and to Og King of Bashan, which were at Ashtaroth.

11 Et nos anciens et tous les habitants de notre pays nous ont dit ces mêmes paroles-ci: Prenez avec vous de la provision pour le chemin, et allez au-devant d'eux, et leur dites: Nous sommes vos serviteurs, et maintenant traitez alliance avec nous.

Wherefore our elders, and all the inhabitants of our countrey spake to vs, saying, Take vitailes with you for the iourney, and go to meete them, and say vnto them, Wee are your seruants: now therefore make ye a league with vs.

12 C'est ici notre pain. Nous le prîmes de nos maisons tout chaud pour notre provision, le jour que nous en sortîmes pour venir vers vous; mais maintenant voici, il est devenu sec, et moisi.

This our bread we tooke it hote with vs for vittailes out of our houses, the day we departed to come vnto you: but nowe beholde, it is dried, and it is mouled.

13 Et ce sont ici les outres de vin que nous avions remplies tout neufs, et voici ils se sont rompus; et nos habits et nos souliers sont usés à cause du long chemin.

Also these bottels of wine which we filled, were newe, and lo, they be rent, and these our garments and our shooes are olde, by reason of the exceeding great iourney.

14 Ces hommes donc avaient pris de la provision; mais on ne consulta point la bouche de l'Eternel.

And the men accepted their tale concerning their vittailes, and counselled not with the mouth of the Lord.

15 Car Josué fit la paix avec eux, et traita avec eux [cette] alliance, qu'il les laisserait vivre; et les principaux de l'assemblée leur en firent le serment.

So Ioshua made peace with them, and made a league with them, that he would suffer them to liue: also the Princes of the Congregation sware vnto them.

16 Mais il arriva trois jours après l'alliance traitée avec eux, qu'ils apprirent que c'étaient leurs voisins, et qu'ils habitaient parmi eux.

But at the end of three dayes, after they had made a league with them, they heard that they were their neighbours, and that they dwelt among them.

17 Car les enfants d'Israël partirent, et vinrent en leurs villes le troisième jour. Or leurs villes étaient Gabaon, Képhira, Beeroth, et Kirjath-jéharim.

And the children of Israel tooke their iourney, and came vnto their cities the third day, and their cities were Gibeon, and Chephirah, and Beeroth and Kiriath-iearim.

18 Et les enfants d'Israël ne les frappèrent point, parce que les principaux de l'assemblée leur avaient fait serment par l'Eternel le Dieu d'Israël; mais toute l'assemblée murmura contre les principaux.

And the children of Israel slewe them not, because the Princes of the Congregation had sworne vnto them by the Lord God of Israel: wherefore all the Congregation murmured against the Princes.

19 Alors tous les principaux dirent à toute l'assemblée: Nous leur avons fait serment par l'Eternel le Dieu d'Israël; c'est pourquoi nous ne les pouvons pas maintenant toucher.

Then all the Princes said vnto all the Congregation, We haue sworne vnto them by the Lord God of Israel: nowe therefore we may not touch them.

20 Faisons leur ceci, et qu'on les laisse vivre, afin qu'il n'y ait point de colère contre nous, à cause du serment que nous leur avons fait.

But this we wil doe to them, and let them liue, least the wrath be vpon vs because of the othe which we sware vnto them.

21 Les principaux donc leur dirent qu'ils vivraient; mais ils furent employés à couper le bois, et à puiser l'eau pour toute l'assemblée, comme les principaux [le] leur dirent.

And the Princes sayd vnto them againe, Let them liue, but they shall hewe wood, and drawe water vnto all the Congregation, as the Princes appoint them.

22 Car Josué les appela, et leur parla, en disant: Pourquoi nous avez-vous trompés, [en nous] disant: Nous sommes fort éloignés de vous; puisque vous habitez parmi nous?

Ioshua then called them, and talked with them, and sayd, Wherefore haue ye beguiled vs, saying, We are very farre from you, when ye dwel among vs?

23 Maintenant donc vous êtes maudits, et il y aura toujours des esclaves d'entre vous, et des coupeurs de bois, et des puiseurs d'eau pour la maison de mon Dieu.

Now therefore ye are cursed, and there shall none of you be freed from being bondmen, and hewers of wood, and drawers of water for the house of my God.

24 Et ils répondirent à Josué, et dirent: Après qu'il a été exactement rapporté à tes serviteurs, que l'Eternel ton Dieu avait commandé à Moïse son serviteur qu'on vous donnât tout le pays, et qu'on exterminât tous les habitants du pays de devant vous, nous avons craint extrêmement pour nos personnes à cause de vous, et nous avons fait ceci.

And they answered Ioshua, and sayd, Because it was tolde thy seruants, that the Lord thy God had commanded his seruant Moses to giue you all the land, and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land out of your sight, therefore we were exceeding sore afraid for our liues at the presence of you, and haue done this thing:

25 Et maintenant nous voici entre tes mains, fais nous comme il te semblera bon et juste de nous faire.

And beholde nowe, we are in thine hand: doe as it seemeth good and right in thine eyes to doe vnto vs.

26 Il leur fit donc ainsi, et il les délivra de la main des enfants d'Israël, tellement qu'ils ne les tuèrent point.

Euen so did he vnto them, and deliuered them out of the hand of the children of Israel, that they slewe them not.

27 Et en ce jour-là Josué les établit coupeurs de bois et puiseurs d'eau pour l'assemblée, et pour l'autel de l'Eternel, jusqu'à aujourd'hui dans le lieu qu'il choisirait.

And Ioshua appointed them that same day to be hewers of wood, and drawers of water for the Congregation, and for the altar of the Lord vnto this day, in the place which he should chuse.
