Job 31

1 J'avais fait accord avec mes yeux; comment aurais-je donc arrêté mes regards sur une vierge?

I reached an agreement with my eyes, that I would not so much as think about a virgin.

2 Et quelle [serait] la portion [que] Dieu [m'aurait envoyée] d'en haut, et quel eût été l'héritage que le Tout-puissant m'eût [envoyé] des hauts lieux?

For what portion should God from above hold for me, and what inheritance should the Almighty from on high keep?

3 La perdition n'est-elle pas pour l'injuste, et les accidents étranges pour les ouvriers d'iniquité?

Is not destruction held for the wicked and repudiation kept for those who work injustice?

4 N'a-t-il pas vu lui-même mes voies, et n'a-t-il pas compté toutes mes démarches?

Does he not examine my ways and number all my steps?

5 Si j'ai marché dans le mensonge, et si mon pied s'est hâté à tromper,

If I have walked in vanity, or if my foot has hurried towards deceitfulness,

6 Qu'on me pèse dans des balances justes, et Dieu connaîtra mon intégrité.

let him weigh me in a just balance, and let God know my simplicity.

7 Si mes pas se sont détournés du [droit] chemin, et si mon cœur a marché après mes yeux, et si quelque tache s'est attachée à mes mains,

If my steps have turned aside from the way, or if my heart has followed my eyes, or if a blemish has clung to my hands,

8 Que je sème, et qu'un autre mange [ce que j'aurai semé]; et que tout ce que j'aurai fait produire, soit déraciné!

then may I sow, and let another consume, and let my offspring be eradicated.

9 Si mon cœur a été séduit après quelque femme, et si j'ai demeuré en embûche à la porte de mon prochain,

If my heart has been deceived over a woman, or if I have waited in ambush at my friend’s door,

10 Que ma femme soit déshonorée par un autre, et qu'elle soit prostituée à d'autres!

then let my wife be the harlot of another, and let other men lean over her.

11 Vu que c'est une méchanceté préméditée, une de ces iniquités qui sont toutes jugées.

For this is a crime and a very great injustice.

12 Car c'est un feu qui dévore jusqu'à consumer, et qui aurait déraciné tout mon revenu.

It is a fire devouring all the way to perdition, and it roots out all that springs forth.

13 Si j'ai refusé de faire droit à mon serviteur ou à ma servante, quand ils ont contesté avec moi;

If I have despised being subject to judgment with my servant or my maid, when they had any complaint against me,

14 Car qu'eussé-je fait, quand le [Dieu] Fort se fût levé? et quand il m'en eût demandé compte, que lui aurais-je répondu?

then what will I do when God rises to judge, and, when he inquires, how will I respond to him?

15 Celui qui m'a formé dans le ventre, ne les a-t-il pas faits aussi? et ne nous a-t-il pas tous formés de la même manière dans la matrice?

Is not he who created me in the womb, also he who labored to make him? And did not one and the same form me in the womb?

16 Si j'ai refusé aux pauvres ce qu'ils ont désiré; si j'ai fait consumer les yeux de la veuve;

If I have denied the poor what they wanted and have made the eyes of the widow wait;

17 Si j'ai mangé seul mes morceaux, et si l'orphelin n'en a point mangé;

if I have eaten my morsel of food alone, while orphans have not eaten from it;

18 (Car dès ma jeunesse il a été élevé avec moi, comme [chez son père], et dès le ventre de ma mère j'ai conduit l'orphelin.)

(for from my infancy mercy grew with me, and it came out with me from my mother’s womb; )

19 Si j'ai vu un homme périr faute d'être vêtu, et le pauvre faute de couverture;

if I have looked down on him who was perishing because he had no clothing and the poor without any covering,

20 Si ses reins ne m'ont point béni, et s'il n'a pas été échauffé de la laine de mes agneaux;

if his sides have not blessed me, and if he were not warmed with the fleece of my sheep;

21 Si j'ai levé la main contre l'orphelin, quand j'ai vu à la porte, que je pouvais l'aider;

if I have lifted up my hand over an orphan, even when it might seem to me that I have the advantage over him at the gate;

22 Que l'os de mon épaule tombe et que mon bras soit cassé, et séparé de l'os auquel il est joint!

then may my shoulder fall from its joint, and may my arm, with all its bones, be broken.

23 Car j'ai eu frayeur de l'orage du [Dieu] Fort, et je ne saurais [subsister] devant sa majesté.

For I have always feared God, like waves flowing over me, whose weight I was unable to bear.

24 Si j'ai mis mon espérance en l'or, et si j'ai dit au fin or: Tu es ma confiance;

If I have considered gold to be my strength, or if I have called purified gold ‘my Trust;’

25 Si je me suis réjoui de ce que mes biens étaient multipliés, et de ce que ma main en avait trouvé abondamment;

if I have rejoiced over my great success, and over the many things my hand has obtained;

26 Si j'ai regardé le soleil lorsqu'il brillait le plus, et la lune marchant noblement;

if I gazed upon the sun when it shined and the moon advancing brightly,

27 Et si mon cœur a été séduit en secret, et si ma main a baisé ma bouche;

so that my heart rejoiced in secret and I kissed my hand with my mouth,

28 (Ce qui est aussi une iniquité toute jugée; car j'eusse renié le Dieu d'en haut.)

which is a very great iniquity and a denial against the most high God;

29 Si je me suis réjoui du malheur de celui qui me haïssait; si j'ai sauté de joie quand il lui est arrivé du mal.

if I have been glad at the ruin of him who hated me and have exulted that evil found him,

30 Je n'ai pas même permis à ma langue de pécher, en demandant sa mort avec imprécation.

for I have not been given my throat to sin by asking for a curse on his soul;

31 Et les gens de ma maison n'ont point dit: Qui nous donnera de sa chair? nous n'en saurions être rassasiés.

if the men around my tabernacle have not said: “He might give us some of his food, so that we will be filled,”

32 L'étranger n'a point passé la nuit dehors; j'ai ouvert ma porte au passant.

for the foreigner did not remain at the door, my door was open to the traveler;

33 Si j'ai caché mon péché comme Adam, pour couvrir mon iniquité en me flattant.

if, as man does, I have hidden my sin and have concealed my iniquity in my bosom;

34 Quoique je pusse me faire craindre à une grande multitude, toutefois le moindre qui fût dans les familles m'inspirait de la crainte, et je me tenais dans le silence, et ne sortais point de la porte.

if I became frightened by an excessive crowd, and the disrespect of close relatives alarmed me, so that I would much rather have remained silent or have gone out the door;

35 Ô! s'il y avait quelqu'un qui voulût m'entendre. Tout mon désir est que le Tout-puissant me réponde, et que ma partie adverse fasse un écrit [contre moi].

then, would he grant me a hearing, so that the Almighty would listen to my desire, and he who judges would himself write a book,

36 Si je ne le porte sur mon épaule, et si je ne l'attache comme une couronne.

which I would then carry on my shoulder and wrap around me like a crown?

37 Je lui raconterais tous mes pas, je m'approcherais de lui comme d'un Prince.

With each of my steps, I would pronounce and offer it, as if to a prince.

38 Si ma terre crie contre moi, et si ses sillons pleurent;

So, if my land cries out against me, and if its furrows weep with it,

39 Si j'ai mangé son fruit sans argent; si j'ai tourmenté l'esprit de ceux qui la possédaient.

if I have used its fruits for nothing but money and have afflicted the souls of its tillers,

40 Qu'elle me produise des épines au lieu de blé, et de l'ivraie au lieu d'orge. C'est ici la fin des paroles de Job.

then, may thistles spring forth for me instead of grain, and thorns instead of barley. (This ended the words of Job.)
