Job 29
1 Et Job continuant, reprit son discours sentencieux, et dit:
Job also added to this, using figures of speech, and he said:
2 Oh! qui me ferait être comme j'étais autrefois, comme j'étais en ces jours où Dieu me gardait.
Who will grant to me that I might be as I was in former months, according to the days when God kept watch over me?
3 Quand il faisait luire sa lampe sur ma tête, et quand je marchais parmi les ténèbres, [éclairé] par sa lumière.
At that time, his lamp shined over my head, and by his light, I walked through the darkness.
4 Comme j'étais aux jours de mon automne, lorsque le secret de Dieu était dans ma tente.
I was then just as in the days of my youth, when God was privately in my tabernacle.
5 Quand le Tout-puissant était encore avec moi, et mes gens autour de moi.
At that time, the Almighty was with me and my children surrounded me.
6 Quand je lavais mes pas dans le beurre, et que des ruisseaux d'huile découlaient pour moi du rocher.
Then, I washed my feet with butter, and a boulder poured out rivers of oil for me.
7 Quand je sortais vers la porte passant par la ville, et que je me faisais préparer un siège dans la place,
When I went to the gate of the city, or to the main street, they prepared a chair for me.
8 Les jeunes gens me voyant se cachaient, les vieillards se levaient, et se tenaient debout.
The youths saw me and hid themselves, and the elders, rising up, remained standing.
9 Les principaux s'abstenaient de parler, et mettaient la main sur leur bouche.
The leaders stopped talking, and they placed a finder over their mouth.
10 Les Conducteurs retenaient leur voix, et leur langue était attachée à leur palais.
The commanders subdued their voice, and their tongue adhered to their throat.
11 L'oreille qui m'entendait, disait que j'étais bienheureux, et l'œil qui me voyait, déposait en ma faveur.
The ear that heard me, blessed me, and the eye that saw me, gave testimony for me.
12 Car je délivrais l'affligé qui criait, et l'orphelin qui n'avait personne pour le secourir.
This was because I had freed the poor, who cried out, and the orphan, who had no helper.
13 La bénédiction de celui qui s'en allait périr, venait sur moi, et je faisais que le cœur de la veuve chantait de joie.
The blessing of him who would have been destroyed came upon me, and I consoled the heart of the widow.
14 J'étais revêtu de la justice, elle me servait de vêtement, et mon équité m'était comme un manteau, et [comme] une tiare.
I put on justice, and I clothed myself with my judgment, like a robe and a diadem.
15 Je servais d'œil à l'aveugle, et de pieds au boiteux.
I was an eye for the blind and a foot for the lame.
16 J'étais le père des pauvres, et je m'informais diligemment de la cause qui ne m'était point connue.
I was the father of the poor; and if I lacked knowledge about any case, I investigated very diligently.
17 Je cassais les grosses dents de l'injuste, et je lui arrachais la proie d'entre ses dents.
I crushed the jaws of the impious, and I took away prey from his teeth.
18 C'est pourquoi je disais: Je mourrai dans mon lit, et je multiplierai mes jours comme les grains de sable.
And I said, “I will die in my little nest, and like a palm tree, I will multiply my days.
19 Ma racine était ouverte aux eaux, et la rosée demeurait toute la nuit sur mes branches.
My root has been spread beside the waters, and the dew will remain with my harvest.
20 Ma gloire se renouvelait en moi, et mon arc était renforcé en ma main.
My glory will always be restored, and my bow will be restored to my hand.”
21 On m'écoutait, et on attendait [que j'eusse parlé]; et lorsque j'avais dit mon avis, on se tenait dans le silence.
Those who heard me, expected vindication, and they listened closely in silence to my counsel.
22 Ils ne répliquaient rien après ce que je disais, et ma parole se répandait sur eux [comme une rosée].
To my words, they dared to add nothing, and my eloquence poured over them.
23 Ils m'attendaient comme on attend la pluie; ils ouvraient leur bouche, comme après la pluie de la dernière saison.
They waited for me as for rain, and they opened their mouth as for belated rains.
24 Riais-je avec eux? ils ne le croyaient point; et ils ne faisaient point disparaître la sérénité de mon visage.
If I had ever laughed at them, they would not have believed it, and the light of my face was not cast down towards the ground.
25 Voulais-je aller avec eux? j'étais assis au haut bout, j'étais entr'eux comme un Roi dans son armée, et comme un homme qui console les affligés.
If I wished to go to them, I sat down first, and, though I sat like a king surrounded by an army, yet I was a comforter to those who mourned.
