Job 2
1 Or il arriva un jour que les enfants de Dieu vinrent pour se présenter devant l'Eternel, et que Satan aussi entra parmi eux pour se présenter devant l'Eternel.
And it came to pass, when on a certain day the sons of God came, and stood before the Lord, and Satan came among them, and stood in his sight,
2 Et l'Eternel dit à Satan: D'où viens-tu? Et Satan répondit à l'Eternel, en disant: Je viens de courir sur la terre, et de m'y promener.
That the Lord said to Satan: Whence comest thou? And he answered and said: I have gone round about the earth, and walked through it.
3 Et l'Eternel dit à Satan: N'as-tu point considéré mon serviteur Job, qui n'a point d'égal sur la terre; homme sincère et droit, craignant Dieu, et se détournant du mal? et qui même retient encore son intégrité, quoique tu m'aies incité contre lui pour l'engloutir sans sujet.
And the Lord said to Satan: Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a man simple, and upright, and fearing God, and avoiding evil, and still keeping his innocence? But thou hast moved me against him, that I should afflict him without cause.
4 Et Satan répondit à l'Eternel, en disant: Chacun donnera peau pour peau, et tout ce qu'il a, pour sa vie.
And Satan answered, and said: Skin for skin, and all that a man hath he will give for his life:
5 Mais étends maintenant ta main, et frappe ses os et sa chair, [et tu verras] s'il ne te blasphème point en face.
But put forth thy hand, and touch his bone and his flesh, and then thou shalt gee that he will bless thee to thy face.
6 Et l'Eternel dit à Satan: Voici il est en ta main; seulement ne touche point à sa vie.
And the Lord said to Satan: Behold be is in thy hand, but yet save his life.
7 Ainsi Satan sortit de devant l'Eternel, et frappa Job d'un ulcère malin, depuis la plante de son pied jusqu'au sommet de la tête.
So Satan went forth from the presence Of the Lord, and struck Job with a very grievous ulcer, from the sole of the foot even to the top of his head:
8 Et Job prit un test pour s'en gratter; et était assis sur les cendres.
And he took a potsherd and scraped the corrupt matter, sitting on a dunghill.
9 Et sa femme lui dit: Conserveras-tu encore ton intégrité? Bénis Dieu, et meurs.
And his wife said to him: Dost thou still continue in thy simplicity? bless God and die.
10 Et il lui répondit: Tu parles comme une femme insensée. Quoi! nous recevrions de Dieu les biens, et nous n'en recevrions pas les maux? En tout cela Job ne pécha point par ses lèvres.
And he said to her: Thou hast; spoken like one of the foolish women: if we have received good things at the hand of God, why should we not receive evil? In all these things Job did not sin with his lips.
11 Or trois des intimes amis de Job, Eliphas Témanite, Bildad Suhite, et Tsophar Nahamathite, ayant appris tous les maux qui lui étaient arrivés, vinrent chacun du lieu de leur demeure, après être convenus ensemble d'un jour pour venir se condouloir avec lui, et le consoler.
Now when Job’s three friends heard all the evil that had befallen him, they came every one from his own place, Alphas the Themanite, and Baldad the Suhite, and Sophar the Naamathite. For they had made an appointment to come together and visit him, and comfort him.
12 Et levant leurs yeux de loin ils ne le reconnurent point, et élevant leur voix ils pleurèrent; et ils déchirèrent chacun leur manteau, et répandirent de la poudre sur leurs têtes [en la jetant] vers les cieux.
And when they had lifted up their eyes afar off, they knew him not, and crying out they wept, and rending their garments they sprinkled dust upon their heads towards heaven.
13 Et ils s'assirent à terre avec lui, pendant sept jours et sept nuits, et nul d'eux ne lui dit rien, parce qu'ils voyaient que sa douleur était fort grande.
And they sat with him on the ground seven days and seven nights, and no man spoke to him a word: for they saw that his grief was very great.
