Job 15
1 Alors Eliphas Témanite prit la parole, et dit:
Then answered Eliphaz the Themanite, and said,
2 Un homme sage proférera-t-il dans ses réponses une science aussi légère que le vent, des opinions vaines; et remplira-t-il son ventre du vent d'Orient;
Should a wise man utter windy knowledge, and fill his inward parts with the east wind?
3 Disputant avec des discours qui ne servent de rien, et avec des paroles dont on ne peut tirer aucun profit?
Should he reason with a speech which availeth nothing? and with words in which there is no profit?
4 Certainement tu abolis la crainte [de Dieu], et tu anéantis peu à peu la prière qu'on doit présenter au [Dieu] Fort.
Yea, thou truly makest void the fear [of God], and diminishest devotion before God.
5 Car ta bouche fait connaître ton iniquité, et tu as choisi un langage trompeur.
For thy iniquity teacheth thy mouth, so that thou choosest the language of the crafty.
6 C'est ta bouche qui te condamne, et non pas moi; et tes lèvres témoignent contre toi.
Thy own mouth must condemn thee, but not I: yea, thy own lips will testify against thee.
7 Es-tu le premier homme né? ou as-tu été formé avant les montagnes?
Wast thou born as the first man? or wast thou brought forth before the hills?
8 As-tu été instruit dans le conseil secret de Dieu, et renfermes-tu seul la sagesse?
Hast thou listened to the secret counsel of God? and is wisdom therefore of little esteem with thee?
9 Que sais-tu que nous ne sachions? quelle connaissance as-tu que nous n'ayons?
What knowest thou, that we do not know? what understandest thou, which is not with us?
10 Il y a aussi parmi nous des hommes à cheveux blancs, et des gens d'une fort grande vieillesse, il y en a même de plus âgés que ton père.
Both the grayheaded and the very aged are among us, — richer than thy father in days.
11 Les consolations du [Dieu] Fort te semblent-elles trop petites? et as-tu quelque chose de caché par-devers toi?
Are the divine consolations too little for thee? and the word that was so mild with thee?
12 Qu'est-ce qui t'ôte le cœur, et pourquoi clignes-tu les yeux?
Whither doth thy heart carry thee away? and what do thy eyes gaze at?
13 Que tu pousses ton souffle contre le [Dieu] Fort, et que tu fasses sortir de ta bouche de tels discours?
That thou shouldst turn against God thy spirit, and utter [such] words out of thy mouth?
14 Qu'est-ce que de l'homme [mortel], qu'il soit pur, et de celui qui est né de femme, qu'il soit juste?
What is man, that he should be pure? and that he who is born of woman should be declared righteous?
15 Voici, [le Dieu fort] ne s'assure point sur ses saints, et les cieux ne se trouvent point purs devant lui;
Behold, in his holy ones he putteth no trust; and the heavens are not pure in his eyes:
16 Et combien plus l'homme, qui boit l'iniquité comme l'eau, est-il abominable et impur?
How much more then the abominable and corrupt, the man who drinketh like water wrong-doing?
17 Je t'enseignerai, écoute-moi, et je te raconterai ce que j'ai vu;
I will instruct thee, hear me; and what I have seen will I relate;
18 Savoir ce que les sages ont déclaré, et qu'ils n'ont point caché; ce qu'ils avaient [reçu] de leurs pères;
Which wise men have ever told, and have not concealed, as they obtained it from their fathers;
19 Eux à qui seuls la terre a été donnée, et parmi lesquels l'étranger n'est point passé.
Unto whom alone the earth was given, and into whose midst no stranger ever entered.
20 Le méchant est [comme] en travail d'enfant tous les jours de sa vie, et un [petit] nombre d'années est réservé à l'homme violent.
All his days is the wicked plagued with pain, and the number of years which are laid by for the tyrant.
21 Un cri de frayeur est dans ses oreilles; au milieu de la paix [il croit] que le destructeur se jette sur lui.
A sound of terrors is in his ears: during peace will the waster come over him.
22 Il ne croit point pouvoir sortir des ténèbres; et il est toujours regardé de l'épée.
He believeth not that he shall return out of darkness, and he is looked for by the sword.
23 Il court après le pain, en [disant]: où y en a-t-il? il sait que le jour de ténèbres est tout prêt, et il le touche comme avec la main.
He wandereth abroad for bread, [saying, ] Where is it? he knoweth that there is ready at his hand the day of darkness.
24 L'angoisse et l'adversité l'épouvantent, et chacune l'accable, comme un Roi équipé pour le combat.
Distress and anguish terrify him: they assail him with might, as a king prepared for the battle.
25 Parce qu'il a élevé sa main contre le [Dieu] Fort, et qu'il s'est roidi contre le Tout-puissant;
Because he had stretched out against God his hand, and strengthened himself against the Almighty;
26 Il lui sautera au collet, [et] sur l'épaisseur de ses gros boucliers.
[And] he had run against him, with an [extended] neck, with the thick roundings of his bucklers;
27 Parce que la graisse aura couvert son visage, et qu'elle aura fait des replis sur son ventre.
Because he had covered his face with his fat, and had made thick folds of fat on his flanks;
28 Et qu'il aura habité dans les villes détruites, et dans des maisons où il ne demeurait plus personne, et qui étaient réduites en monceaux de pierres.
And he dwelt in abandoned cities, in houses which none inhabited, which were destined to be ruinous heaps.
29 Mais il n'en sera pas plus riche, car ses biens ne subsisteront point, et leur entassement ne se répandra point sur la terre.
[Yet] will he not remain rich, neither will his wealth endure, nor will he attain their perfection on earth.
30 Il ne pourra point se tirer des ténèbres; la flamme séchera ses branches encore tendres; il s'en ira par le souffle de la bouche du [Tout-puissant].
He will never depart out of darkness: the flame shall dry up his shoots, and he will depart by the breath of God's mouth.
31 Qu'il ne s'assure [donc] point sur la vanité par laquelle il a été séduit, car son changement lui sera inutile.
Let him that goeth astray not trust in vanity; for vanity will be what he obtaineth thereby.
32 Ce sera fait de lui avant son temps, ses branches ne reverdiront point.
Even before his time will it be overfull, and his branches will not be green.
33 On lui ravira son aigret comme à une vigne; et on [lui] fera tomber ses boutons comme à un olivier.
He will shake off like the vine his unripe grapes, and cast off like the olive his blossoms.
34 Car la bande des hypocrites sera désolée; le feu dévorera les tentes de [ceux qui reçoivent les] présents.
For the assembly of hypocrites will remain desolate, and fire will consume the tents of bribery.
35 Ils conçoivent le travail, et ils enfantent le tourment, et machinent dans le cœur des fraudes.
They conceive trouble, and bring forth wrong-doing, and their body prepareth deceit.
