Genèse 30

1 Alors Rachel voyant qu elle ne faisait point d'enfants à Jacob, fut jalouse de Léa sa sœur; et dit à Jacob: Donne-moi des enfants, autrement je suis morte.

And Rachel having perceived that she bore Jacob no children, was jealous of her sister; and said to Jacob, Give me children; and if not, I shall die.

2 Et Jacob se mit fort en colère contre Rachel, et lui dit: Suis-je au lieu de Dieu, qui t'a empêchée d'avoir des enfants?

And Jacob was angry with Rachel, and said to her, Am I in the place of God, who has deprived you of the fruit of the womb?

3 Et elle dit: Voilà ma servante Bilha; va vers elle et elle enfantera sur mes genoux, et j'aurai des enfants par elle.

And Rachel said to Jacob, Behold my handmaid Balla, go in to her, and she shall bear upon my knees, and I also shall have children by her.

4 Elle lui donna donc Bilha sa servante pour femme, et Jacob vint vers elle.

And she gave him Balla her maid, for a wife to him; and Jacob went in to her.

5 Et Bilha conçut, et enfanta un fils à Jacob.

And Balla, Rachel's maid, conceived, and bore Jacob a son.

6 Et Rachel dit: Dieu a jugé en ma faveur, et il a aussi exaucé ma voix, et m'a donné un fils; c'est pourquoi elle le nomma Dan.

And Rachel said, God has given judgement for me, and listened to my voice, and has given me a son; therefore she called his name, Dan.

7 Et Bilha, servante de Rachel, conçut encore, et enfanta un second fils à Jacob.

And Balla, Rachel's maid, conceived yet again, and bore a second son to Jacob.

8 Et Rachel dit: J'ai fortement lutté contre ma sœur, aussi j'ai eu la victoire; c'est pourquoi elle le nomma Nephthali.

And Rachel said, God has helped me, and I contended with my sister and prevailed; and she called his name, Nephthalim.

9 Alors Léa voyant qu'elle avait cessé de faire des enfants, prit Zilpa sa servante, et la donna à Jacob pour femme.

And Lea saw that she ceased from bearing, and she took Zelpha her maid, and gave her to Jacob for a wife; and he went in to her.

10 Et Zilpa, servante de Léa, enfanta un fils à Jacob.

And Zelpha the maid of Lea conceived, and bore Jacob a son.

11 Et Léa dit: Une troupe est arrivée, c'est pourquoi elle le nomma Gad.

And Lea said, [It is] happily: and she called his name, Gad.

12 Et Zilpa, servante de Léa, enfanta un second fils à Jacob.

And Zelpha the maid of Lea conceived yet again, and bore Jacob a second son.

13 Et Léa dit: C'est pour me rendre heureuse; car les filles me diront bienheureuse; c'est pourquoi elle le nomma Aser.

And Lea said, I am blessed, for the women will pronounce me blessed; and she called his name, Aser.

14 Or Ruben étant sorti au temps de la moisson des blés, trouva des mandragores aux champs, et les apporta à Léa sa mère; et Rachel dit à Léa: Donne-moi, je te prie, des mandragores de ton fils.

And Ruben went in the day of barley harvest, and found apples of mandrakes in the field, and brought them to his mother Lea; and Rachel said to Lea her sister, Give me of your son's mandrakes.

15 Et elle lui répondit: Est-ce peu de chose de m'avoir oté mon mari, que tu m'otes aussi les mandragores de mon fils? Et Rachel dit: Qu'il couche donc cette nuit avec toi, pour les mandragores de ton fils.

And Lea said, [Is it] not enough for you that you have taken my husband, will you also take my son's mandrakes? And Rachel said, Not so: let him lie with you tonight for your son's mandrakes.

16 Et quand Jacob revint des champs au soir, Léa sortit au-devant de lui, et lui dit: Tu viendras vers moi; car je t'ai loué pour les mandragores de mon fils; et il coucha avec elle cette nuit-là.

And Jacob came in out of the field at even; and Lea went forth to meet him, and said, You shall come in to me this day, for I have hired you for my son's mandrakes; and he lay with her that night.

17 Et Dieu exauça Léa, et elle conçut, et enfanta à Jacob un cinquième fils.

And God listened to Lea, and she conceived, and bore Jacob a fifth son.

18 Et elle dit: Dieu m'a récompensée, parce que j'ai donné ma servante à mon mari; c'est pourquoi elle le nomma Issacar.

And Lea said, God has given me my reward, because I gave my maid to my husband; and she called his name Issachar, which is, Reward.

19 Et Léa conçut encore, et enfanta un sixième fils à Jacob.

And Lea conceived again, and bore Jacob a sixth son.

20 Et Léa dit: Dieu m'a donné un bon douaire; maintenant mon mari demeurera avec moi: car je lui ai enfanté six enfants; c'est pourquoi elle le nomma Zabulon.

And Lea said, God has given me a good gift in this time; my husband will choose me, for I have born him six sons: and she called his name, Zabulon.

21 Puis elle enfanta une fille, et la nomma Dina.

And after this she bore a daughter; and she called her name, Dina.

22 Et Dieu se souvint de Rachel, et Dieu l'ayant exaucée, ouvrit sa matrice.

And God remembered Rachel, and God listened to her, and he opened her womb.

23 Alors elle conçut, et enfanta un fils, et dit: Dieu a oté mon opprobre.

And she conceived, and bore Jacob a son; and Rachel said, God has taken away my reproach.

24 Et elle le nomma Joseph, en disant: Que l'Eternel m'ajoute un autre fils!

And she called his name Joseph, saying, Let God add to me another son.

25 Et il arriva qu'après que Rachel eut enfanté Joseph, Jacob dit à Laban: Donne-moi mon congé, et je m'en retournerai en mon lieu, et en mon pays.

And it came to pass when Rachel had born Joseph, Jacob said to Laban, Send me away, that I may go to my place and to my land.

26 Donne-moi mes femmes et mes enfants, pour lesquels je t'ai servi, et je m'en irai; car tu sais de quelle manière je t'ai servi.

Restore my wives and my children, for whom I have served you, that I may depart, for you know the service wherewith I have served you.

27 Et Laban lui répondit: [Ecoute], je te prie, si j'ai trouvé grâce devant toi; j'ai reconnu que l'Eternel m'a béni à cause de toi.

And Laban said to him, If I have found grace in your sight, I would augur [well], for the Lord has blessed me at your coming in.

28 Il lui dit aussi: Marque-moi quel salaire [tu veux], et je te le donnerai.

Appoint me your wages, and I will give [them].

29 Et il lui répondit: Tu sais comment je t'ai servi, et ce qu'est devenu ton bétail avec moi.

And Jacob said, You know in what things I have served you, and how many cattle of your are with me.

30 Car ce que tu avais avant que je vinsse, était peu de chose, mais il est beaucoup accru, et l'Eternel t'a béni à mon arrivée; et maintenant, quand ferai-je aussi [quelque chose] pour ma maison?

For it was little you had before my time, and it is increased to a multitude, and the Lord God has blessed you since my coming; now then, when shall I set up also my own house?

31 Et [Laban] lui dit: Que te donnerai-je? Et Jacob répondit: Tu ne me donneras rien; mais je paîtrai encore tes troupeaux, et je les garderai, si tu fais ceci pour moi:

And Laban said to him, What shall I give you? and Jacob said to him, You shall not give me anything; if you will do this thing for me, I will again tend your flocks and keep them.

32 Que je passe aujourd'hui parmi tes troupeaux, [et] qu'on mette à part toutes les brebis picotées et tachetées, et tous les agneaux roux, et les chèvres tachetées et picotées; et ce sera là mon salaire.

Let all your sheep pass by today, and separate thence every grey sheep amongst the rams, and every one that is speckled and spotted amongst the goats—[this] shall be my reward.

33 Et désormais ma justice rendra témoignage pour moi; car elle viendra sur mon salaire, en ta présence; et tout ce qui ne sera point picoté ou tacheté entre les chèvres, et roux entre les agneaux, sera tenu pour un larcin, s'il est trouvé chez moi.

And my righteousness shall answer for me on the morrow, for it is my reward before you: whatever shall not be spotted and speckled amongst the goats, and grey amongst the rams, shall be stolen with me.

34 Et Laban dit: Voici, qu'il te soit fait comme tu l'as dit.

And Laban said to him, Let it be according to your word.

35 Et en ce jour-là il sépara les boucs marquetés et picotés, et toutes les chèvres picotées et tachetées, toutes celles où il y avait du blanc, et tous les agneaux roux, et il les mit entre les mains de ses fils.

And he separated in that day the spotted and speckled he-goats, and all the spotted and speckled she-goats, and all that was grey amongst the rams, and every one that was white amongst them, and he gave them into the hand of his sons.

36 Et il mit l'espace de trois journées de chemin entre lui et Jacob; et Jacob paissait le reste des troupeaux de Laban.

And he set a distance of a three days' journey between them and Jacob. And Jacob tended the cattle of Laban that were left behind.

37 Mais Jacob prit des verges fraîches, de peuplier, de coudrier, et de châtaignier, et en ôta les écorces en découvrant le blanc qui était aux verges.

And Jacob took to himself green rods of storax tree and walnut and plane tree; and Jacob peeled in them white stripes; and as he drew off the green, the white stripe which he had made appeared alternate on the rods.

38 Et il mit les verges qu'il avait pelées, au devant des troupeaux, dans les auges, et dans les abreuvoirs où les brebis venaient boire; et elles entraient en chaleur quand elles venaient boire.

And he laid the rods which he had peeled, in the hollows of the watering-troughs, that whenever the cattle should come to drink, as they should have come to drink before the rods, the cattle might conceive at the rods.

39 Les brebis donc entraient en chaleur à la vue des verges, et elles faisaient des brebis marquetées, picotées, et tachetées.

So the cattle conceived at the rods, and the cattle brought forth [young] speckled, and streaked and spotted with ash-coloured [spots].

40 Et Jacob partagea les agneaux, et fit que les brebis du troupeau de Laban avaient en vue les brebis marquetées, et tout ce qui était roux; et il mit ses troupeaux à part, et ne les mit point auprès des troupeaux de Laban.

And Jacob separated the lambs, and set before the sheep a speckled ram, and every variegated one amongst the lambs, and he separated flocks for himself alone, and did not mingle them with the sheep of Laban.

41 Et il arrivait que toutes les fois que les brebis hâtives entraient en chaleur, Jacob mettait les verges dans les abreuvoirs devant les yeux du troupeau, afin qu'elles entrassent en chaleur en regardant les verges.

And it came to pass in the time wherein the cattle became pregnant, conceiving in the belly, Jacob put the rods before the cattle in the troughs, that they might conceive by the rods.

42 Mais quand les brebis étaient tardives, il ne les mettait point; et les tardives appartenaient à Laban, et les hâtives à Jacob.

But he did not put them in [indiscriminately] whenever the cattle happened to bring forth, but the unmarked ones were Laban's, and the marked ones were Jacob's.

43 Ainsi cet homme s'accrut fort [en biens], et eut de grands troupeaux, des servantes, et des serviteurs, des chameaux, et des ânes.

And the man became very rich, and he had many cattle, and oxen, and servants, and maidservants, and camels, and asses.
