Esdras 8
1 Or ce sont ici les Chefs des pères, avec le dénombrement qui fut fait selon les généalogies, de ceux qui montèrent avec moi de Babylone, pendant le règne du Roi Artaxerxes;
This is a list of the names of the leaders of the clans who came with me up [to Jerusalem] from Babylonia when Artaxerxes was the king [of Persia]:
2 Des enfants de Phinées, Guersom; des enfants d'Ithamar, Daniel; des enfants de David, Hattus;
Gershom, from the clan descended from [Aaron’s grandson] Phinehas Daniel, from the clan descended from [Aaron’s son] Ithamar Hattush, the son of Shecaniah, from the clan descended from King David
3 Des enfants de Sécania, qui était des enfants de Parhos, Zacharie, et avec lui, en faisant le dénombrement par leur généalogie selon les mâles, cent cinquante hommes.
Zechariah and 150 [other] men from the clan descended from Parosh
4 Des enfants de Péhath-Moab, Eliehohénaï fils de Zérahia, et avec lui deux cents hommes;
Eliehoenai the son of Zerahiah and 200 other men from the clan descended from Pahath-Moab
5 Des enfants de Sécania, le fils de Jahaziël, et avec lui trois cents hommes;
Shecaniah the son of Jahaziel and 300 other men from the clan descended from Zattu
6 Des enfants de Hadin, Hébed fils de Jonathan, et avec lui cinquante hommes;
Ebed the son of Jonathan and 50 other men from the clan descended from Adin
7 Des enfants de Hélam, Esaïe, fils de Hathalia, et avec lui soixante-dix hommes;
Jeshaiah the son of Athaliah and 70 other men from the clan descended from Elam
8 Des enfants de Sépharia, Zébadia fils de Micaël, et avec lui quatre-vingts hommes;
Zebadiah the son of Michael and 80 other men from the clan descended from Shephatiah
9 Des enfants de Joab, Habadia fils de Jéhiël, et avec lui deux cent dix-huit hommes;
Obadiah the son of Jehiel and 218 other men from the clan descended from Joab
10 Des enfants de Sélomith, le fils de Josiphia, et avec lui cent soixante hommes;
Shelomith the son of Josiphiah and 160 other men from the clan descended from Bani
11 Des enfants de Bébaï, Zacharie fils de Bébaï, et avec lui vingt-huit hommes;
Zechariah the son of Bebai and 28 other men from the clan descended from [another man whose name was] Bebai
12 Des enfants de Hazgad, Johanan, fils de Katan, et avec lui cent et dix hommes;
Johanan the son of Hakkatan and 110 other men from the clan descended from Azgad
13 Des enfants d'Adonicam, les derniers, desquels les noms sont Eliphelet, Jéhiël, et Sémahia, et avec eux soixante hommes.
Also Eliphelet, Jeuel, and Shemaiah, who returned [here] later with 60 men from the clan descended from Adonikam
14 Des enfants de Bigvaï, Huthaï, Zabbud, et avec eux soixante-dix hommes.
And Uthai and Zaccur and 70 other men from the clan descended from Bigvai.
15 Et je les assemblai près de la rivière, qui se rend à Ahava, et nous y demeurâmes trois jours. Puis je pris garde au peuple et aux Sacrificateurs, et je n'y trouvai aucun des enfants de Lévi.
I gathered all of them together at the canal that goes [from Babylon] to Ahava [town]. We set up our tents there and stayed there for three days. [During that time] I checked the lists of names and found out that there were priests [going with us], but no [other] descendants of Levi [who could help them in the temple].
16 Et ainsi j'envoyai d'entre les principaux Elihéser, Ariel, Sémahia, Elnathan, Jarib, Elnathan, Nathan, Zacharie, et Mésullam, avec Jojarib et Elnathan, docteurs.
So I summoned Eliezer, Ariel, Shemaiah, two men whose names were Elnathan, and Jarib, Nathan, Zechariah, and Meshullam, who were all leaders [of the people]. I also summoned Joiarib and another Elnathan, who were wise.
17 Et je leur donnai des ordres pour Iddo, principal chef, [qui demeurait] dans le lieu de Casiphia; et je mis en leur bouche les paroles qu'ils devaient dire à Iddo, [et] à son frère, Néthiniens, dans le lieu de Casiphia, afin qu'ils nous fissent venir des ministres pour la maison de notre Dieu.
I sent them all to Iddo, the leader of the descendants of Levi, who was living in Casiphia [town], to request that he and his relatives and other men who had worked in the temple send to us some men who would [go/come with us to] work in God’s new temple [in Jerusalem].
18 Et ils nous amenèrent, selon que la main de notre Dieu était bonne sur nous, un homme intelligent, d'entre les enfants de Mahli, fils de Lévi, fils d'Israël; [savoir] Sérébia, avec ses fils et ses frères, [qui furent] dix-huit hommes.
Because God was kind to us, they brought to us a man named Sherebiah and 18 of his sons and other relatives. Sherebiah was a very wise man, a descendant of Mahli, [who was a grandson] of Levi.
19 Et Hasabia, et avec lui Esaïe, d'entre les enfants de Mérari, ses frères, et leurs enfants, vingt hommes.
They also sent to us Hashabiah, along with Jeshaiah, descendants of [Levi’s son] Merari, and 20 of their relatives.
20 Et des Néthiniens, que David et les principaux du peuple avaient assignés pour le service des Lévites, deux cent et vingt Néthiniens, qui furent tous nommés par leurs noms.
They also sent 220 other men to work in the temple. Those men’s ancestors had been appointed by King David to assist the descendants of Levi [who helped the priests in the temple]. I listed/wrote the names of all those men.
21 Et je publiai là le jeûne auprès de la rivière d'Ahava, afin de nous humilier devant notre Dieu, le priant de nous donner un heureux voyage pour nous, et pour nos familles, et pour tous nos biens.
There alongside the Ahava Canal, I told them that we all would (fast/abstain from eating food) and pray. I also told them that we should humble ourselves in the presence of our God. We prayed that God would protect us while we traveled, and also protect our children and our possessions/belongings.
22 Car j'eus honte de demander au Roi des forces et des gens de cheval pour nous défendre des ennemis par le chemin; à cause que nous avions dit au Roi en termes exprès: La main de notre Dieu est favorable à tous ceux qui l'invoquent; mais sa force et sa colère est contre ceux qui l'abandonnent.
Previously we had told the king that our God takes care of all those who truly trust in him, but that he becomes very angry with those who refuse to obey him. So I would have been ashamed if I had asked the king to send soldiers and men riding on horses to protect us from our enemies while we were traveling along the road.
23 Nous jeûnâmes donc, et nous implorâmes [le secours] de notre Dieu à cause de cela; et il fut fléchi par nos prières.
So we (fasted/abstained from eating food) and requested God to protect us, and he (answered our prayers/did what we requested.)
24 Alors je séparai douze des principaux des Sacrificateurs; avec Sérébia, Hasabia, et avec eux dix de leurs frères.
I chose twelve of the leaders of the priests, Sherebiah and Hashabiah and ten of their relatives.
25 Et je leur pesai l'argent et l'or et les ustensiles, qui étaient l'offrande que le Roi, ses conseillers, ses gentilshommes, et tous ceux d'Israël qui s'[y] étaient trouvés, avaient faite à la maison de notre Dieu.
I appointed them to supervise carrying to Jerusalem the gifts of silver and gold and the other valuable items that the king and his advisors and other officials, and the Israeli people [who were living in Babylonia], had contributed for the temple of our God.
26 Je leur pesai donc, et je leur délivrai six cent cinquante talents d'argent, et des plats d'argent [pesant] cent talents, et cent talents d'or.
As I gave these various items to those priests, I weighed each of the items. This was the total: 25 tons of silver, 100 items made from silver that altogether weighed 7,500 pounds, (7,500 pounds/3,400 kg.) of gold,
27 Et vingt plats d'or [montant] à mille drachmes, et deux ustensiles de cuivre resplendissant et fin, aussi précieux que s'ils eussent été d'or.
20 gold bowls that altogether weighed (19 pounds/8.6 kg.), and two items made of polished bronze that were as valuable as ones made of gold.
28 Et je leur dis: Vous êtes sanctifiés à l'Eternel; et les ustensiles sont sanctifiés; et cet argent et cet or est une offrande volontaire faite à l'Eternel le Dieu de vos pères.
I said to those priests, “You belong to Yahweh, the God whom our ancestors (worshiped/also belonged to), and these valuable things also belong to him. The people themselves gave these things to be offerings to Yahweh (voluntarily/because they wanted to).
29 Ayez-y l'œil et gardez-les, jusqu'à ce que vous les pesiez en la présence des principaux des Sacrificateurs et des Lévites, et devant les principaux des pères d'Israël à Jérusalem, dans les chambres de la maison de l'Eternel.
So guard them carefully, and [when we arrive] in Jerusalem, weigh them in the presence of the priests, the descendants of Levi [who will help the priests], and the other Israeli leaders there. They will then put them in the storerooms in the new temple.”
30 Les Sacrificateurs donc et les Lévites reçurent le poids de l'argent, et de l'or, et des ustensiles, pour les apporter à Jérusalem, dans la maison de notre Dieu.
So the priests and [other] descendants of Levi took from me all the gifts of silver and gold and the other valuable items, in order to carry them to the temple in Jerusalem.
31 Et nous partîmes de la rivière d'Ahava le douzième jour du premier mois, pour aller à Jérusalem; et la main de notre Dieu fut sur nous; et il nous délivra de la main des ennemis, et de [leurs] embûches sur le chemin.
On April 19, we left the Ahava Canal and started to travel to Jerusalem. Our God took care of us, and while we traveled, he prevented our enemies and bandits from (ambushing us/suddenly attacking us).
32 Puis nous arrivâmes à Jérusalem, et nous étant reposés trois jours,
After we arrived in Jerusalem, we rested for three days.
33 Au quatrième jour nous pesâmes l'argent et l'or, et les ustensiles dans la maison de notre Dieu, et nous les délivrâmes à Mérémoth, fils d'Urija Sacrificateur, avec lequel [était] Eléazar fils de Phinées; et avec eux Jozabad fils de Jésuah, et Nohadia, fils de Binuï, Lévites.
Then on the fourth/next day we went to the temple. There the silver and gold and the other items were weighed and given to the priest Meremoth, the son of Uriah. Eleazar the son of Phinehas and two descendants of Levi, Jozabad the son of Jeshua and Noadiah the son of Binnui, were with him.
34 Selon le nombre et le poids de toutes ces choses, et tout le poids en fut mis alors par écrit.
They counted everything, and wrote down how much they weighed, and wrote [a description of] each item.
35 Et ceux qui avaient été transportés, [et] qui étaient retournés de la captivité, offrirent pour tout Israël, en holocauste au Dieu d'Israël, douze veaux, quatre-vingt-seize béliers, soixante-dix-sept agneaux, [et] douze boucs pour le péché; le tout en holocauste à l'Eternel.
We who had returned from Babylonia offered to God sacrifices on the altar. We offered twelve bulls for all us Israeli people. We also offered 96 rams and 27 lambs. We also sacrificed twelve goats [to atone] for the sins that all the people had committed. These were all completely burned on the altar.
36 Et ils remirent les ordonnances du Roi entre les mains des Satrapes du Roi et des Gouverneurs qui étaient au deçà du fleuve, lesquels favorisèrent le peuple, et la maison de Dieu.
Some of us who returned [from Babylonia] took to the governors and other officials of the province west of the [Euphrates] River the letter that the king had given to us. [After they read the letter, ] they did all [that they were able to do] for us Israeli people and for the temple of God.
