Exode 17
1 Et toute l'assemblée des enfants d'Israël partit du désert de Sin, selon leurs traites, suivant le mandement de l'Eternel, et ils se campèrent en Réphidim, où il n'y avait point d'eau à boire pour le peuple.
All the congregation of the children of Israel [God prevails] traveled from the wilderness of Cin [Clay], by their journeys, according to Adonai’s order, and encamped in Rephidim; but there was no water for the people to drink.
2 Et le peuple se souleva contre Moïse, et ils lui dirent: donnez-nous de l'eau pour boire. Et Moïse leur dit: pourquoi vous soulevez-vous contre moi? Pourquoi tentez-vous l'Eternel?
Therefore the people quarreled with Moses [Drawn out], and said, “Give us water to drink.” Moses [Drawn out] said to them, “Why do you quarrel with me? Why do you test Adonai?”
3 Le peuple donc eut soif en ce lieu-là, par faute d'eau; et ainsi le peuple murmura contre Moïse, en disant: pourquoi nous as-tu fait monter hors d'Egypte, pour nous faire mourir de soif, nous, et nos enfants, et nos troupeaux?
The people were thirsty for water there; and the people murmured against Moses [Drawn out], and said, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt [Abode of slavery], to kill us, our children, and our livestock with thirst?”
4 Et Moïse cria à l'Eternel, en disant: que ferai-je à ce peuple? Dans peu ils me lapideront.
Moses [Drawn out] cried to Adonai, saying, “What shall I do with these people? They are almost ready to stone me.”
5 Et l'Eternel répondit à Moïse: passe devant le peuple, et prends avec toi des Anciens d'Israël, prends aussi en ta main la verge, avec laquelle tu as frappé le fleuve, et viens.
Adonai said to Moses [Drawn out], “Walk on before the people, and take the elders of Israel [God prevails] with you, and take the rod in your hand with which you struck the Nile, and go.
6 Voici, je vais me tenir là devant toi sur le rocher en Horeb, et tu frapperas le rocher, et il en sortira des eaux, et le peuple boira. Moïse donc fit ainsi, les Anciens d'Israël le voyant.
Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock in Horeb [Desert]. You shall strike the rock, and water will come out of it, that the people may drink.” Moses [Drawn out] did so in the sight of the elders of Israel [God prevails].
7 Et il nomma le lieu Massa et Mériba; à cause du débat des enfants d'Israël, et parce qu'ils avaient tenté l'Eternel, en disant: l'Eternel est-il au milieu de nous, ou non?
He called the name of the place Massah [Testing], and Meribah [Quarreling], because the children of Israel [God prevails] quarreled, and because they tested Adonai, saying, “Is Adonai among us, or not?”
8 Alors Hamalec vint et livra la bataille à Israël en Réphidim.
Then Amalek [Man who licks up] came and fought with Israel [God prevails] in Rephidim.
9 Et Moïse dit à Josué: choisis-nous des hommes, et sors pour combattre contre Hamalec, et je me tiendrai demain au sommet du coteau, et la verge de Dieu sera en ma main.
Moses [Drawn out] said to Joshua [Yah Salvation], “Choose men for us, and go out, fight with Amalek [Man who licks up]. Tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with God’s rod in my hand.”
10 Et Josué fit comme Moïse lui avait commandé, en combattant contre Hamalec; mais Moïse et Aaron et Hur montèrent au sommet du coteau.
So Joshua [Yah Salvation] did as Moses [Drawn out] had told him, and fought with Amalek [Man who licks up]; and Moses [Drawn out], Aaron [Light-bringer], and Hur went up to the top of the hill.
11 Et il arrivait que lorsque Moïse élevait sa main, Israël était alors le plus fort; mais quand il reposait sa main, alors Hamalec était le plus fort.
When Moses [Drawn out] held up his hand, Israel [God prevails] prevailed. When he let down his hand, Amalek [Man who licks up] prevailed.
12 Et les mains de Moïse étant devenues pesantes, ils prirent une pierre et la mirent sous lui, et il s'assit dessus; et Aaron et Hur soutenaient ses mains, l'un deçà, et l'autre delà; et ainsi ses mains furent fermes jusqu'au soleil couchant.
But Moses [Drawn out]’ hands were heavy; and they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat on it. Aaron [Light-bringer] and Hur held up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side. His hands were steady until sunset.
13 Josué donc défit Hamalec, et son peuple au tranchant de l'épée.
Joshua [Yah Salvation] defeated Amalek [Man who licks up] and his people with the edge of the sword.
14 Et l'Eternel dit à Moïse: écris ceci pour mémoire dans un livre, et fais entendre à Josué que j'effacerai entièrement la mémoire d'Hamalec de dessous les cieux.
Adonai said to Moses [Drawn out], “Write this for a memorial in a book, and rehearse it in the ears of Joshua [Yah Salvation]: that I will utterly blot out the memory of Amalek [Man who licks up] from under the sky.”
15 Et Moïse bâtit un autel, et le nomma: l'Eternel mon Enseigne.
Moses [Drawn out] built an altar, and called its name Adonai our Banner.
16 Il dit aussi: parce que la main [a été levée] sur le trône de l'Eternel, l'Eternel aura toujours la guerre contre Hamalec.
He said, “Yah has sworn: ‘Adonai will have war with Amalek [Man who licks up] from generation to generation.’”
