Esther 3

1 Après ces choses le Roi Assuérus fit de grands honneurs à Haman fils d'Hammédatha Agagien, il l'éleva, et mit son trône au dessus de tous les Seigneurs qui étaient avec lui.

After these things, by the order of the king, Haman, the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, was lifted up and given a position of honour and a higher place than all the other captains who were with him.

2 Et tous les serviteurs du Roi qui étaient à la porte du Roi s'inclinaient et se prosternaient devant Haman; car le Roi en avait ainsi ordonné. Mais Mardochée ne s'inclinait point, ni ne se prosternait point [devant lui].

And all the king's servants who were in the king's house went down to the earth before Haman and gave him honour: for so the king had given orders. But Mordecai did not go down before him or give him honour.

3 Et les serviteurs du Roi qui étaient à la porte du Roi, disaient à Mardochée: Pourquoi violes-tu le commandement du Roi?

Then the king's servants who were in the king's house said to Mordecai, Why do you go against the king's order?

4 Il arriva donc qu'après qu'ils [le] lui eurent dit plusieurs jours, et qu'il ne les eut point écoutés, ils [le] rapportèrent à Haman, pour voir si les paroles de Mardochée seraient fermes; parce qu'il leur avait déclaré qu'il était Juif.

Now when they had said this to him day after day and he gave no attention, they let Haman have news of it, to see if Mordecai's behaviour would be overlooked: for he had said to them that he was a Jew.

5 Et Haman vit que Mardochée ne s'inclinait, ni ne se prosternait point devant lui; et il en fut rempli de colère.

And when Haman saw that Mordecai did not go down before him and give him honour, Haman was full of wrath.

6 Or il ne daignait pas mettre la main sur Mardochée seul; mais parce qu'on lui avait rapporté de quelle nation était Mardochée, il cherchait d'exterminer tous les Juifs qui étaient par tout le Royaume d'Assuérus, comme étant la nation de Mardochée.

But it was not enough for him to make an attack on Mordecai only; for they had made clear to him who Mordecai's people were; so Haman made it his purpose to put an end to all the Jews, even Mordecai's people, through all the kingdom of Ahasuerus.

7 Et au premier mois, qui est le mois de Nisan, la douzième année du Roi Assuérus, on jeta Pur, c'est-à-dire le sort, devant Haman, pour chaque jour, et pour chaque mois, [et le sort tomba sur] le douzième mois, qui est le mois d'Adar.

In the first month, the month Nisan, in the twelfth year of King Ahasuerus, from day to day and from month to month they went on looking for a sign given by Pur (that is chance) before Haman, till the sign came out for the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, the month Adar.

8 Et Haman dit au Roi Assuérus: Il y a un certain peuple dispersé entre les peuples, par toutes les provinces de ton Royaume, et qui toutefois se tient à part, duquel les lois sont différentes de celles de tout [autre] peuple, et ils ne font point les lois du Roi, de sorte qu'il n'est pas expédient au Roi de les laisser ainsi.

And Haman said to King Ahasuerus, There is a certain nation living here and there in small groups among the people in all the divisions of your kingdom; their laws are different from those of any other nation, and they do not keep the king's laws: for this reason it is not right for the king to let them be.

9 S'il plaît donc au Roi, qu'on écrive pour les détruire, et je délivrerai dix mille talents d'argent entre les mains de ceux qui manient les affaires, pour les porter dans les trésors du Roi.

If it is the king's pleasure, let a statement ordering their destruction be put in writing: and I will give to those responsible for the king's business, ten thousand talents of silver for the king's store-house.

10 Alors le Roi tira son anneau de sa main, et le donna à Haman fils de Hammédatha Agagien, oppresseur des Juifs.

And the king took his ring from his hand and gave it to Haman, the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, the hater of the Jews.

11 Outre cela le Roi dit à Haman: Cet argent t'est donné, avec le peuple, pour faire de lui comme il te plaira.

And the king said to Haman, The money is yours, and the people, to do with them whatever seems right to you.

12 Et le treizième jour du premier mois les Secrétaires du Roi furent appelés; et on écrivit selon le commandement d'Haman, aux Satrapes du Roi, aux Gouverneurs de chaque province, et aux principaux de chaque peuple; à chaque province selon sa façon d'écrire, et à chaque peuple selon sa Langue; le tout fut écrit au nom du Roi Assuérus, et cacheté de l'anneau du Roi.

Then on the thirteenth day of the first month, the king's scribes were sent for, and they put in writing Haman's orders to all the king's captains and the rulers of every division of his kingdom and the chiefs of every people: for every division of the kingdom in the writing commonly used there, and to every people in the language which was theirs; it was signed in the name of King Ahasuerus and stamped with the king's ring.

13 Et les lettres furent envoyées par des courriers dans toutes les provinces du Roi, afin qu'on eût à exterminer, à tuer et détruire tous les Juifs, tant les jeunes que les vieux, les petits enfants et les femmes, dans un même jour, qui était le treizième du douzième mois, qui [est] le mois d'Adar, et à piller leurs dépouilles.

And letters were sent by the runners into every division of the kingdom ordering the death and destruction of all Jews, young and old, little children and women, on the same day, even the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, the month Adar, and the taking of all their goods by force.

14 Les patentes qui furent écrites portaient, que cette ordonnance serait publiée dans chaque province, et qu'elle serait proposée publiquement à tous les peuples, afin qu'on fût prêt pour ce jour-là.

A copy of the writing, to be made public in every part of the kingdom, was sent out to all the peoples, so that they might be ready when that day came.

15 [Ainsi] les courriers pressés par le commandement du Roi partirent. L'ordonnance fut aussi publiée dans Susan, la ville capitale. Mais le Roi et Haman étaient assis pour boire, pendant que la ville de Susan était en perplexité.

The runners went out quickly by the king's order, and a public statement was made in Shushan: and the king and Haman took wine together: but the town of Shushan was troubled.
