Ecclésiaste 7
1 La réputation vaut mieux que le bon parfum; et le jour de la mort, que le jour de la naissance.
A good name is better then a good oyntment, and the day of death, then the day that one is borne.
2 Il vaut mieux aller dans une maison de deuil, que d'aller dans une maison de festin; car en celle-là est la fin de tout homme, et le vivant met cela en son cœur.
It is better to goe to the house of mourning, then to goe to the house of feasting, because this is the ende of all men: and the liuing shall lay it to his heart.
3 Il vaut mieux être fâché que rire; à cause que par la tristesse du visage le cœur devient joyeux.
Anger is better then laughter: for by a sad looke the heart is made better.
4 Le cœur des sages est dans la maison du deuil; mais le cœur des fous est dans la maison de joie.
The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning: but the heart of fooles is in the house of mirth.
5 Il vaut mieux ouïr la répréhension du sage, que d'ouïr la chanson des fous.
Better it is to heare ye rebuke of a wise man, then that a man should heare the song of fooles.
6 Car tel qu'est le bruit des épines sous le chaudron, tel est le ris du fou; cela aussi est une vanité.
For like ye noyse of the thornes vnder the pot, so is the laughter of the foole: this also is vanitie.
7 Certainement l'oppression fait perdre le sens au sage; et le don fait perdre l'entendement.
Surely oppression maketh a wise man mad: and the rewarde destroyeth the heart.
8 Mieux vaut la fin d'une chose, que son commencement. Mieux vaut l'homme qui est d'un esprit patient, que l'homme qui est d'un esprit hautain.
The ende of a thing is better then the beginning thereof, and the pacient in spirit is better then the proude in spirit.
9 Ne te précipite point dans ton esprit pour te dépiter; car le dépit repose dans le sein des fous.
Be not thou of an hastie spirit to be angry: for anger resteth in the bosome of fooles.
10 Ne dis point: D'où vient que les jours passés ont été meilleurs que ceux-ci? Car ce que tu t'enquiers de cela n'est pas de la sagesse.
Say not thou, Why is it that the former dayes were better then these? for thou doest not enquire wisely of this thing.
11 La sagesse est bonne avec un héritage, et ceux qui voient le soleil reçoivent de l'avantage d'[elle].
Wisedome is good with an inheritance, and excellent to them that see the sunne.
12 Car [on est à couvert] à l'ombre de la sagesse, de même qu'à l'ombre de l'argent; mais la science a cet avantage, que la sagesse fait vivre celui qui en est doué.
For man shall rest in the shadowe of wisedome, and in the shadowe of siluer: but the excellencie of the knowledge of wisedome giueth life to the possessers thereof.
13 Regarde l'œuvre de Dieu; car qui est-ce qui pourra redresser ce qu'il aura renversé?
Beholde the worke of God: for who can make straight that which he hath made crooked?
14 Au jour du bien, use du bien, et au jour de l'adversité, prends-y garde; car Dieu a fait l'un à l'opposite de l'autre, afin que l'homme ne trouve rien à [redire] après lui.
In the day of wealth be of good comfort, and in the day of affliction consider: God also hath made this contrary to that, to the intent that man shoulde finde nothing after him.
15 J'ai vu tout ceci pendant les jours de ma vanité; il y a tel juste, qui périt dans sa justice; et il y a tel méchant, qui prolonge [ses jours] dans sa méchanceté.
I haue seene all things in the dayes of my vanitie: there is a iust man that perisheth in his iustice, and there is a wicked man that continueth long in his malice.
16 Ne te crois pas trop juste, et ne te fais pas plus sage qu'il ne faut; pourquoi en serais-tu surpris?
Be not thou iust ouermuch, neither make thy selfe ouerwise: wherefore shouldest thou be desolate?
17 Ne sois point trop remuant, et ne sois point fou; pourquoi mourrais-tu avant ton temps?
Be not thou wicked ouermuch, neither be thou foolish: wherefore shouldest thou perish not in thy time?
18 Il est bon que tu retiennes ceci, et aussi que tu ne retires point ta main de l'autre; car qui craint Dieu sort de tout.
It is good that thou lay hold on this: but yet withdrawe not thine hand from that: for he that feareth God, shall come forth of them all.
19 La sagesse donne plus de force au sage, que dix Gouverneurs qui seraient dans une ville.
Wisedome shall strengthen the wise man more then ten mightie princes that are in ye citie.
20 Certainement il n'y a point d'homme juste sur la terre, qui agisse [toujours] bien, et qui ne pèche point.
Surely there is no man iust in the earth, that doeth good and sinneth not.
21 Ne mets point aussi ton cœur à toutes les paroles qu'on dira, afin que tu n'entendes pas ton serviteur médisant de toi.
Giue not thine heart also to all ye wordes that men speake, lest thou doe heare thy seruant cursing thee.
22 Car aussi ton cœur a connu plusieurs fois que tu as pareillement mal parlé des autres.
For often times also thine heart knoweth that thou likewise hast cursed others.
23 J'ai essayé tout ceci avec sagesse, et j'ai dit: J'acquerrai de la sagesse; mais elle s'est éloignée de moi.
All this haue I prooued by wisedome: I thought I will be wise, but it went farre from me.
24 Ce qui a été, est bien loin, et il est enfoncé fort bas; qui le trouvera?
It is farre off, what may it be? and it is a profound deepenesse, who can finde it?
25 Moi et mon cœur nous nous sommes agités pour savoir, pour épier, et pour chercher la sagesse, et la raison [de tout]; et pour connaître la malice de la folie, de la bêtise, [et] des sottises;
I haue compassed about, both I and mine heart to knowe and to enquire and to search wisedome, and reason, and to knowe the wickednesse of follie, and the foolishnesse of madnesse,
26 Et j'ai trouvé que la femme qui est [comme] des rets, et dont le cœur est [comme] des filets, et dont les mains sont [comme] des liens, est une chose plus amère que la mort; celui qui est agréable à Dieu en échappera, mais le pécheur y sera pris.
And I finde more bitter then death the woman whose heart is as nettes and snares, and her handes, as bands: he that is good before God, shalbe deliuered from her, but the sinner shall be taken by her.
27 Vois, dit l'Ecclésiaste, ce que j'ai trouvé en cherchant la raison de toutes choses, l'une après l'autre;
Beholde, sayth the Preacher, this haue I found, seeking one by one to finde the count:
28 C'est, que jusqu'à présent mon âme a cherché, mais que je n'ai point trouvé, c'est, [dis-je], que j'ai bien trouvé un homme entre mille; mais pas une femme entre elles toutes.
And yet my soule seeketh, but I finde it not: I haue found one man of a thousand: but a woman among them all haue I not founde.
29 Seulement voici ce que j'ai trouvé; c'est que Dieu a créé l'homme juste; mais ils ont cherché beaucoup de discours.
Onely loe, this haue I founde, that God hath made man righteous: but they haue sought many inuentions.
