Daniel 2
1 Or en la seconde année du règne de Nébucadnetsar, Nébucadnetsar songea des songes, et son esprit fut ému, et son sommeil finit.
In the second year of his reign, Nebuchadnezzar had dreams that troubled his spirit, and sleep escaped him.
2 Alors le Roi commanda qu'on appelât les magiciens, et les astrologues, et les enchanteurs, et les Caldéens, pour expliquer au Roi ses songes; ils vinrent donc et se présentèrent devant le Roi.
So the king gave orders to summon the magicians, enchanters, sorcerers, and astrologers to explain his dreams. When they came and stood before the king,
3 Et le Roi leur dit: J'ai songé un songe, et mon esprit s'est agité, tâchant de savoir le songe.
he said to them, “I have had a dream, and my spirit is anxious to understand it.”
4 Et les Caldéens répondirent au Roi en langue Syriaque: Roi, vis éternellement! dis le songe à tes serviteurs, et nous en donnerons l'interprétation.
Then the astrologers answered the king in Aramaic, “O king, may you live forever! Tell your servants the dream, and we will give the interpretation.”
5 [Mais] le Roi répondit, et dit aux Caldéens: La chose m'est échappée; si vous ne me faites connaître le songe et son interprétation, vous serez mis en pièces, et vos maisons seront réduites en voirie.
The king replied to the astrologers, “My word is final: If you do not tell me the dream and its interpretation, you will be cut into pieces and your houses will be reduced to rubble.
6 Mais si vous me manifestez le songe et son interprétation; vous recevrez de moi des dons, des largesses, et un grand honneur; quoi qu'il en soit, manifestez-moi le songe et son interprétation.
But if you tell me the dream and its interpretation, you will receive from me gifts and rewards and great honor. So tell me the dream and its interpretation.”
7 Ils répondirent pour la seconde fois, et dirent: Que le Roi dise le songe à ses serviteurs, et nous en donnerons l'interprétation.
They answered a second time, “Let the king tell the dream to his servants, and we will give the interpretation.”
8 Le Roi répondit, et dit: Je connais maintenant que vous ne cherchez qu'à gagner du temps, parce que vous voyez que la chose m'est échappée.
The king replied, “I know for sure that you are stalling for time, because you see that my word is final.
9 Mais si vous ne me faites pas connaître le songe, il y a une même sentence contre vous; car vous vous êtes préparés pour dire devant moi quelque parole fausse et perverse, en attendant que le temps soit changé. Quoi qu'il en soit, dites-moi le songe, et je saurai que vous m'en pouvez donner l'interprétation.
If you do not tell me the dream, there is only one decree for you. You have conspired to speak before me false and fraudulent words, hoping the situation will change. Therefore tell me the dream, and I will know that you can give me its interpretation.”
10 Les Caldéens répondirent au Roi, et dirent: Il n'y a aucun homme sur la terre qui puisse exécuter ce que le Roi demande; et aussi il n'y a ni Roi, ni Seigneur, ni Gouverneur qui ait jamais demandé une telle chose à quelque magicien, astrologue, ou Caldéen que ce soit.
The astrologers answered the king, “No one on earth can do what the king requests! No king, however great and powerful, has ever asked anything like this of any magician, enchanter, or astrologer.
11 Car la chose que le Roi demande est extrêmement difficile et il n'y a que les dieux, lesquels n'ont aucune fréquentation avec la chair, qui la puissent déclarer au Roi.
What the king requests is so difficult that no one can tell it to him except the gods, whose dwelling is not with mortals.”
12 C'est pourquoi le Roi commanda avec grande colère et indignation qu'on mît à mort tous les sages de Babylone.
This response made the king so furious with anger that he gave orders to destroy all the wise men of Babylon.
13 La sentence donc fut publiée, et on tuait les sages; et on cherchait Daniel et ses compagnons, pour les tuer.
So the decree went out that the wise men were to be executed, and men went to look for Daniel and his friends to execute them.
14 Alors Daniel détourna [l'exécution] du conseil, et de l'arrêt donné à Arioc, prévôt de l'hôtel du Roi, qui était sorti pour tuer les sages de Babylone.
When Arioch, the commander of the king’s guard, had gone out to execute the wise men of Babylon, Daniel replied with discretion and tact.
15 Et il demanda et dit à Arioc, commissaire du Roi: Pourquoi la sentence est-elle si pressante de par le Roi? Et Arioc déclara le fait à Daniel.
“Why is the decree from the king so harsh?” he asked. At this time Arioch explained the situation to Daniel.
16 Et Daniel entra, et pria le Roi de lui donner du temps, et qu'il donnerait l'interprétation au Roi.
So Daniel went in and asked the king to give him some time, so that he could give him the interpretation.
17 Alors Daniel alla en sa maison, et déclara l'affaire à Hanania, à Misaël, et à Hazaria, ses compagnons;
Then Daniel returned to his house and explained the matter to his friends Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah,
18 Qui implorèrent la miséricorde du Dieu des cieux sur ce secret, afin qu'on ne mît point à mort Daniel et ses compagnons, avec le reste des sages de Babylone.
urging them to plead for mercy from the God of heaven concerning this mystery, so that Daniel and his friends would not be killed with the rest of the wise men of Babylon.
19 Et le secret fut révélé à Daniel dans une vision de nuit, et là-dessus Daniel bénit le Dieu des cieux.
During the night, the mystery was revealed to Daniel in a vision, and he blessed the God of heaven
20 Daniel [donc] prenant la parole, dit: Béni soit le nom de Dieu, depuis un siècle jusqu'à l'autre; car à lui est la sagesse et la force.
and declared: “Blessed be the name of God forever and ever, for wisdom and power belong to Him.
21 Et c'est lui qui change les temps et les saisons, qui ôte les Rois, et qui établit les Rois, qui donne la sagesse aux sages, et la connaissance à ceux qui ont de l'intelligence.
He changes the times and seasons; He removes kings and establishes them. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning.
22 C'est lui qui découvre les choses profondes et cachées, il connaît les choses qui sont dans les ténèbres, et la lumière demeure avec lui.
He reveals the deep and hidden things; He knows what lies in darkness, and light dwells with Him.
23 Ô Dieu de nos pères! je te célèbre et te loue de ce que tu m'as donné de la sagesse et de la force, et de ce que tu m'as maintenant fait savoir ce que nous t'avons demandé, en nous ayant fait connaître la parole du Roi.
To You, O God of my fathers, I give thanks and praise, because You have given me wisdom and power. And now You have made known to me what we have requested, for You have made known to us the dream of the king.”
24 C'est pourquoi Daniel alla vers Arioc, que le Roi avait commis pour faire mourir les sages de Babylone, et étant arrivé, il lui parla ainsi: Ne fais point mettre à mort les sages de Babylone, [mais] fais-moi entrer devant le Roi, et je donnerai au Roi l'interprétation [qu'il souhaite].
Therefore Daniel went to Arioch, whom the king had appointed to destroy the wise men of Babylon, and said to him, “Do not execute the wise men of Babylon! Bring me before the king, and I will give him the interpretation.”
25 Alors Arioc fit promptement entrer Daniel devant le Roi, et lui parla ainsi: J'ai trouvé un homme d'entre ceux qui ont été emmenés captifs de Juda qui donnera au Roi l'interprétation [de son songe.]
Arioch hastily brought Daniel before the king and said to him, “I have found a man among the exiles from Judah who will tell the king the interpretation.”
26 Et le Roi prenant la parole, dit à Daniel, qui avait nom Beltesatsar: Me pourras-tu faire connaître le songe que j'ai vu, et son interprétation?
The king responded to Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, “Are you able to tell me what I saw in the dream, as well as its interpretation?”
27 Et Daniel répondit en la présence du Roi, et dit: Le secret que le Roi demande [est tel], que ni les astrologues, ni les magiciens, ni les devins, ne le peuvent point découvrir au Roi.
Daniel answered the king, “No wise man, enchanter, medium, or magician can explain to the king the mystery of which he inquires.
28 Mais il y a un Dieu aux cieux qui révèle les secrets, et qui a fait connaître au Roi Nébucadnetsar ce qui doit arriver aux derniers temps. Ton songe, et les visions de ta tête [que tu as eues] sur ton lit, sont telles.
But there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries, and He has made known to King Nebuchadnezzar what will happen in the latter days. Your dream and the visions that came into your mind as you lay on your bed were these:
29 Tes pensées, ô Roi! te sont montées dans ton lit, touchant ce qui arriverait ci-après, et celui qui révèle les secrets t'a déclaré ce qui doit arriver.
As you lay on your bed, O king, your thoughts turned to the future, and the Revealer of Mysteries made known to you what will happen.
30 Et ce secret m'a été révélé, non point par quelque sagesse qui soit en moi, plus qu'en aucun des vivants, mais afin de donner au Roi l'interprétation [de son songe], et afin que tu connaisses les pensées de ton cœur.
And to me this mystery has been revealed, not because I have more wisdom than any man alive, but in order that the interpretation might be made known to the king, and that you may understand the thoughts of your mind.
31 Tu contemplais, ô Roi! et voici une grande statue, et cette grande statue, dont la splendeur était excellente, était debout devant toi, et elle était terrible à voir.
As you, O king, were watching, a great statue appeared. A great and dazzling statue stood before you, and its form was awesome.
32 La tête de cette statue était d'un or très-fin, sa poitrine et ses bras [étaient] d'argent; son ventre et ses hanches [étaient] d'airain.
The head of the statue was pure gold, its chest and arms were silver, its belly and thighs were bronze,
33 Ses jambes étaient de fer, et ses pieds étaient en partie de fer, et en partie de terre.
its legs were iron, and its feet were part iron and part clay.
34 Tu contemplais cela jusqu'à ce qu'une pierre fût coupée sans main, laquelle frappa la statue en ses pieds de fer et de terre, et les brisa.
As you watched, a stone was cut out, but not by human hands. It struck the statue on its feet of iron and clay, and crushed them.
35 Alors furent brisés ensemble le fer, la terre, l'airain, l'argent et l'or, et ils devinrent comme la paille de l'aire d'Eté, que le vent transporte çà et là; et il ne fut plus trouvé aucun lieu pour eux, mais cette pierre qui avait frappé la statue devint une grande montagne, et remplit toute la terre.
Then the iron, clay, bronze, silver, and gold were shattered and became like chaff on the threshing floor in summer. The wind carried them away, and not a trace of them could be found. But the stone that had struck the statue became a great mountain and filled the whole earth.
36 C'est là le songe; nous dirons maintenant son interprétation en la présence du Roi.
This was the dream; now we will tell the king its interpretation.
37 Toi ô Roi! qui es le Roi des Rois; parce que le Dieu des cieux t'a donné le Royaume, la puissance, la force et la gloire,
You, O king, are the king of kings, to whom the God of heaven has given sovereignty, power, strength, and glory.
38 Et qu'en quelque lieu qu'habitent les enfants des hommes, les bêtes des champs, et les oiseaux des cieux, il les a donnés en ta main, et t'a fait dominer sur eux tous, tu es la tête d'or.
Wherever the sons of men or beasts of the field or birds of the air dwell, He has given them into your hand and has made you ruler over them all. You are that head of gold.
39 Mais après toi il s'élèvera un autre Royaume, moindre que le tien, et ensuite un autre troisième Royaume qui sera d'airain, lequel dominera sur toute la terre.
But after you, there will arise another kingdom, inferior to yours. Next, a third kingdom, one of bronze, will rule the whole earth.
40 Puis il y aura un quatrième Royaume, fort comme du fer, parce que le fer brise, et met en pièces toutes choses; et comme le fer met en pièces toutes ces choses, ainsi il brisera et mettra tout en pièces.
Finally, there will be a fourth kingdom as strong as iron; for iron shatters and crushes all things, and like iron that crushes all things, it will shatter and crush all the others.
41 Et quant à ce que tu as vu que les pieds et les orteils étaient en partie de terre de potier, et en partie de fer, c'est que le Royaume sera divisé, et il y aura en lui de la force du fer, selon que tu as vu le fer mêlé avec la terre de potier.
And just as you saw that the feet and toes were made partly of fired clay and partly of iron, so this will be a divided kingdom, yet some of the strength of iron will be in it—just as you saw the iron mixed with clay.
42 Et ce que les orteils des pieds étaient en partie de fer, et en partie de terre, c'est que ce Royaume sera en partie fort, et en partie frêle.
And as the toes of the feet were partly iron and partly clay, so this kingdom will be partly strong and partly brittle.
43 Mais ce que tu as vu le fer mêlé avec la terre de potier, c'est qu'ils se mêleront par semence humaine, mais ils ne se joindront point l'un avec l'autre, ainsi que le fer ne peut point se mêler avec la terre.
As you saw the iron mixed with clay, so the peoples will mix with one another, but will not hold together any more than iron mixes with clay.
44 Et au temps de ces Rois le Dieu des cieux suscitera un Royaume qui ne sera jamais dissipé, et ce Royaume ne sera point laissé à un autre peuple, mais il brisera et consumera tous ces Royaumes, et il sera établi éternellement.
In the days of those kings, the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be destroyed, nor will it be left to another people. It will shatter all these kingdoms and bring them to an end, but will itself stand forever.
45 Selon que tu as vu que de la montagne une pierre a été coupée sans main, et qu'elle a brisé le fer, l'airain, la terre, l'argent, et l'or. Le grand Dieu a fait connaître au Roi ce qui arrivera ci-après; or le songe est véritable, et son interprétation est certaine.
And just as you saw a stone being cut out of the mountain without human hands, and it shattered the iron, bronze, clay, silver, and gold, so the great God has told the king what will happen in the future. The dream is true, and its interpretation is trustworthy.”
46 Alors le Roi Nébucadnetsar tomba sur sa face, et se prosterna devant Daniel, et dit qu'on lui donnât de quoi faire des oblations et des offrandes de bonne odeur.
At this, King Nebuchadnezzar fell on his face, paid homage to Daniel, and ordered that an offering of incense be presented to him.
47 [Aussi] le Roi parla à Daniel, et lui dit: Certainement votre Dieu est le Dieu des dieux, et le Seigneur des Rois, et c'est lui qui révèle les secrets, puisque tu as pu déclarer ce secret.
The king said to Daniel, “Your God is truly the God of gods and Lord of kings, the Revealer of Mysteries, since you were able to reveal this mystery.”
48 Alors le Roi éleva en honneur Daniel, et lui donna beaucoup de grands présents; il l'établit Gouverneur sur toute la Province de Babylone, et le fit plus grand Seigneur que tous ceux qui avaient la surintendance sur tous les sages de Babylone.
Then the king promoted Daniel and gave him many generous gifts. He made him ruler over the entire province of Babylon and chief administrator over all the wise men of Babylon.
49 Et Daniel fit une requête au Roi; et [le roi] établit sur les affaires de la Province de Babylone, Sadrac, Mésac, et Habed-négo, mais Daniel était à la porte du Roi.
And at Daniel’s request, the king appointed Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego to manage the province of Babylon, while Daniel remained in the king’s court.
