Actes 25
1 Festus donc étant arrivé dans la Province, monta trois jours après de Césarée à Jérusalem.
When Festus was come into the province after thre dayes he ascended fro Cesarea vnto Ierusalem.
2 Et le souverain Sacrificateur, et les premiers d'entre les Juifs, comparurent devant lui contre Paul, et ils priaient [Festus];
Then enformed him the hye prestes and the chefe of the Iewes of Paul. And they besought him
3 Et lui demandaient cette grâce contre Paul, qu'il le fît venir à Jérusalem; car ils avaient dressé des embûches pour le tuer par le chemin.
and desired faveour agaynst him that he wold sende for him to Ierusalem: and layde awayte for him in the waye to kill him.
4 Mais Festus leur répondit que Paul était bien gardé à Césarée, où il devait retourner lui-même bientôt.
Festus answered that Paul shuld be kept at Cesarea: but that he him selfe wold shortly departe thither.
5 C'est pourquoi, dit-il, que ceux d'entre vous qui le peuvent faire, y descendent avec moi; et s'il y a quelque crime en cet homme, qu'ils l'accusent.
Let the therfore (sayd he) which amoge you are able to do it come doune with vs and accuse him if ther be eny faute in the man.
6 Et n'ayant pas demeuré parmi eux plus de dix jours, il descendit à Césarée; et le lendemain il s'assit au siège judicial, et il commanda que Paul fût amené.
When he had taried there moare then ten dayes he departed vnto Cesarea and the nexte daye sate doune in the iudgemet seate and commaunded Paul to be brought.
7 Et comme il fut venu là, les Juifs qui étaient descendus de Jérusalem l'environnèrent, le chargeant de plusieurs grands crimes, lesquels ils ne pouvaient prouver.
When he was come the Iewes which were come fro Ierusalem came aboute him and layde many and greveous complayntes agaynst Paul which they coulde not prove
8 Paul répondant qu'il n'avait péché en rien, ni contre la Loi des Juifs, ni contre le Temple, ni contre César.
as longe as he answered for him selfe that he had nether agaynst the lawe of the Iewes nether agaynst the temple nor yet agaynst Cesar offended eny thinge at all.
9 Mais Festus voulant faire plaisir aux Juifs, répondit à Paul, et dit: veux-tu monter à Jérusalem, et y être jugé de ces choses devant moi?
Festus willinge to do the Iewes a pleasure answered Paul and sayde: wilt thou goo to Ierusalem and there be iudged of these thinges before me?
10 Et Paul dit: je comparais devant le siège judicial de César, où il faut que je sois jugé: je n'ai fait aucun tort aux Juifs, comme tu le connais toi-même très bien.
Then sayd Paul: I stonde at Cesars iudgemet seate where I ought to be iudged. To ye Iewes have I no harme done as thou verely well knowest.
11 Que si je leur ai fait tort, ou que j'aie fait quelque chose digne de mort, je ne refuse point de mourir; mais s'il n'est rien de ce dont ils m'accusent, personne ne me peut livrer à eux: j'en appelle à César.
If I have hurte them or comitted eny thinge worthy of deeth I refuse not to dye. If none of these thinges are where of they accuse me no man owght to delyver me to them. I appeale vnto Cesar.
12 Alors Festus ayant conféré avec le Conseil, [lui] répondit: en as-tu appelé à César? tu iras à César.
Then spake Festus with deliberacion and answered. Thou hast appealed vnto Cesar: vnto Cesar shalt thou goo.
13 Or quelques jours après, le Roi Agrippa et Bérénice arrivèrent à Césarée pour saluer Festus.
After a certayne dayes kinge Agrippa and Bernice came vnto Cesarea to salute Festus.
14 Et après avoir demeuré là plusieurs jours, Festus fit mention au Roi de l'affaire de Paul, disant: un certain homme a été laissé prisonnier par Félix.
And when they had bene there a good ceason Festus rehersed Paules cause vnto ye kynge sayinge: ther is a certayne man left in preson of Felix
15 Sur le sujet duquel, comme j'étais à Jérusalem, les principaux Sacrificateurs et les Anciens des Juifs sont comparus, sollicitant sa condamnation;
about whom when I came to Ierusalem the hye prestes and elders of the Iewes enformed me and desyred to have iudgement agaynst him.
16 Mais je leur ai répondu que ce n'est point l'usage des Romains de livrer quelqu'un à la mort, avant que celui qui est accusé ait ses accusateurs présents, et qu'il ait lieu de se défendre du crime.
To whom I answered: It is not the maner of the Romayns to delyver eny man that he shuld perisshe before that he which is accused have the accusars before him and have licence to answer for him selfe concerninge ye cryme layde agaynst him:
17 Quand donc ils furent venus ici, sans que j'usasse d'aucun délai, le jour suivant étant assis au siège judicial, je commandai que cet homme fût amené;
whe they were come hidder wt out delaye on the morowe I sate to geve iudgement and comaunded ye ma to be brought forthe.
18 Et ses accusateurs étant là présents, ils n'alléguèrent aucun des crimes dont je pensais [qu'ils l'accuseraient].
Agaynst who when ye accusers stode vp they brought none accusacion of soche thinges as I supposed:
19 Mais ils avaient quelques disputes contre lui touchant leurs superstitions, et touchant un certain Jésus mort, que Paul affirmait être vivant.
but had certayne questions agaynst him of their awne supersticion and of one Iesus which was ded: whom Paul affirmed to be alyve.
20 Or comme j'étais fort en peine pour savoir ce que c'était, je demandai [à cet homme] s'il voulait aller à Jérusalem, et y être jugé de ces choses.
And be cause I douted of soche maner questions I axed him whyther he wolde goo to Ierusalem and there be iudged of these matters.
21 Mais parce qu'il en appela, demandant d'être réservé à la connaissance d'Auguste, je commandai qu'il fût gardé jusqu'à ce que je l'envoyasse à César.
Then when Paul had appealed to be kept vnto the knowledge of Cesar I commaunded him to be kept tyll I myght sende him to Cesar.
22 Alors Agrippa dit à Festus: je voudrais bien aussi entendre cet homme. Demain, dit-il, tu l'entendras.
Agrippa sayd vnto Festus: I wolde also heare ye man my selfe. To morowe (sayde he) thou shalt heare him.
23 Le lendemain donc Agrippa et Bérénice étant venus avec une grande pompe, et étant entrés dans l'Auditoire avec les Tribuns et les principaux de la ville, Paul fut amené par le commandement de Festus.
And on ye morowe when Agrippa was come and Bernice with greate pompe and were entred into the counsell housse with the captaynes and chefe men of the cite at Festus commaundement Paul was brought forth.
24 Et Festus dit: Roi Agrippa, et vous tous qui êtes ici avec nous, vous voyez cet homme contre lequel toute la multitude des Juifs m'est venue solliciter, tant à Jérusalem qu'ici, criant qu'il ne le fallait plus laisser vivre.
And Festus sayde: kynge Agrippa and all men which are heare present wt vs: ye se this man about whom all the multitude of the Iewes have bene with me both at Ierusalem and also here cryinge that he ought not to lyve eny lenger.
25 Mais moi, ayant trouvé qu'il n'avait rien fait qui fût digne de mort, et lui-même en ayant appelé à Auguste, j'ai résolu de le [lui] envoyer.
Yet founde I nothinge worthy of deeth that he had comitted. Neverthelesse seinge that he hath appealed to Cesar I have determined to sende him.
26 Mais parce que je n'ai rien de certain à en écrire à l'Empereur, je vous l'ai présenté, et principalement à toi, Roi Agrippa, afin qu'après en avoir fait l'examen, j'aie de quoi écrire.
Of whom I have no certayne thinge to wryte vnto my lorde. Wherfore I have brought him vnto you and specially vnto the kynge Agrippa that after examinacion had I myght have sumwhat to wryte.
27 Car il me semble qu'il n'est pas raisonnable d'envoyer un prisonnier, sans marquer les faits dont on l'accuse.
For me thynketh it vnreasonable for to sende a presoner and not to shewe the causes which are layde agaynst him.
