1 Or les fils des Prophètes dirent à Elisée: Voici maintenant, le lieu où nous sommes assis devant toi, est trop étroit pour nous.
And sons of the prophet say unto Elisha, 'Lo, we pray thee, the place where we are dwelling before thee is too strait for us;
2 Allons-nous-en maintenant jusqu'au Jourdain, et nous prendrons de là chacun de nous une pièce de bois, et nous ferons là un lieu pour y demeurer; et il répondit: Allez.
let us go, we pray thee, unto the Jordan, and we take thence each one beam, and we make for ourselves there a place to dwell there;' and he saith, 'Go.'
3 Et l'un d'eux dit: Je te prie qu'il te plaise de venir avec tes serviteurs; et il répondit: J'y irai.
And the one saith, 'Be pleased, I pray thee, and go with thy servants;' and he saith, 'I — I go.'
4 Il s'en alla donc avec eux; et ils allèrent au Jourdain, et ils coupèrent du bois.
And he goeth with them, and they come in to the Jordan, and cut down the trees,
5 Mais il arriva que comme l'un d'eux abattait une pièce de bois, le fer [de sa cognée] tomba dans l'eau; et il s'écria, et dit: Hélas mon Seigneur! encore est-il emprunté.
and it cometh to pass, the one is felling the beam, and the iron hath fallen into the water, and he crieth and saith, 'Alas! my lord, and it asked!'
6 Et l'homme de Dieu dit: Où est-il tombé? et il lui montra l'endroit; alors [Elisée] coupa un morceau de bois, et le jeta là, et il fit nager le fer par dessus.
And the man of God saith, 'Whither hath it fallen?' and he sheweth him the place, and he cutteth a stick, and casteth thither, and causeth the iron to swim,
7 Et il dit: Lève-le; et [cet homme] étendit sa main, et le prit.
and saith, 'Raise to thee;' and he putteth forth his hand and taketh it.
8 Or le Roi de Syrie faisant la guerre à Israël, tenait conseil avec ses serviteurs, et disait: En un tel et un tel lieu sera mon camp.
And the king of Aram hath been fighting against Israel, and taketh counsel with his servants, saying, 'At such and such a place [is] my encamping.'
9 Et l'homme de Dieu envoyait dire au Roi d'Israël: Donne-toi de garde de passer en ce lieu-là, car les Syriens y sont descendus.
And the man of God sendeth unto the king of Israel, saying, 'Take heed of passing by this place, for thither are the Aramaeans coming down;
10 Et le Roi d'Israël envoyait au lieu que lui disait l'homme de Dieu, et il y pourvoyait, et était sur ses gardes; ce qu'il fit plusieurs fois.
and the king of Israel sendeth unto the place of which the man of God spake to him, and warned him, and he is preserved there not once nor twice.
11 Et le cœur du Roi de Syrie en fut troublé, et il appela ses serviteurs, et leur dit: Ne me découvrirez-vous pas qui est celui des nôtres qui envoie vers le Roi d'Israël?
And the heart of the king of Aram is tossed about concerning this thing, and he calleth unto his servants, and saith unto them, 'Do ye not declare to me who of us [is] for the king of Israel?'
12 Et l'un de ses serviteurs lui dit: Il n'y en a point, ô Roi mon Seigneur! mais Elisée le Prophète qui est en Israël, déclare au Roi d'Israël les paroles mêmes que tu dis dans la chambre où tu couches.
And one of his servants saith, 'Nay, my lord, O king, for Elisha the prophet, who [is] in Israel, declareth to the king of Israel the words that thou speakest in the inner part of thy bed-chamber.'
13 Et il dit: Allez, et voyez où il est, afin que j'envoie pour le prendre; et on lui rapporta, en disant: [Le] voilà à Dothan.
And he saith, 'Go ye and see where he [is], and I send and take him;' and it is declared to him, saying, 'Lo — in Dothan.'
14 Et il envoya là des chevaux, et des chariots, et de grandes troupes, qui vinrent de nuit, et qui environnèrent la ville.
And he sendeth thither horses and chariot, and a heavy force, and they come in by night, and go round against the city.
15 Or le serviteur de l'homme de Dieu se leva de grand matin, et sortit, et voici des troupes, et des chevaux, et des chariots qui environnaient la ville; et le serviteur de l'homme de Dieu lui dit: Hélas mon Seigneur! comment ferons-nous?
And the servant of the man of God riseth early, and goeth out, and lo, a force is surrounding the city, and horse and chariot, and his young man saith unto him, 'Alas! my lord, how do we do?'
16 Et il lui répondit: Ne crains point; car ceux qui sont avec nous, sont en plus grand nombre que ceux qui sont avec eux.
And he saith, 'Fear not, for more [are] they who [are] with us than they who [are] with them.'
17 Elisée donc pria, et dit: Je te prie, ô Eternel! ouvre ses yeux, afin qu'il voie; et l'Eternel ouvrit les yeux du serviteur, et il vit, et voici la montagne était pleine de chevaux, et de chariots de feu autour d'Elisée.
And Elisha prayeth, and saith, 'Jehovah, open, I pray Thee, his eyes, and he doth see;' and Jehovah openeth the eyes of the young man, and he seeth, and lo, the hill is full of horses and chariots of fire, round about Elisha.
18 Puis [les Syriens] descendirent vers Elisée, et il pria l'Eternel, et dit: Je te prie, frappe ces gens d'éblouissement; et Dieu les frappa d'éblouissement, selon la parole d'Elisée.
And they come down unto it, and Elisha prayeth unto Jehovah, and saith, 'Smite, I pray Thee, this nation with blindness;' and He smiteth them with blindness, according to the word of Elisha.
19 Et Elisée leur dit: Ce n'est pas ici le chemin, et ce n'est pas ici la ville; venez après moi, et je vous mènerai vers l'homme que vous cherchez; et il les mena à Samarie.
And Elisha saith unto them, 'This [is] not the way, nor [is] this the city; come after me, and I lead you unto the man whom ye seek;' and he leadeth them to Samaria.
20 Et il arriva que sitôt qu'ils furent entrés dans Samarie, Elisée dit: Ô Eternel ouvre leurs yeux afin qu'ils voient. Et l'Eternel ouvrit leurs yeux, et ils virent, et voici ils étaient au milieu de Samarie.
And it cometh to pass, at their coming in to Samaria, that Elisha saith, 'Jehovah, open the eyes of these, and they see;' and Jehovah openeth their eyes, and they see, and lo, in the midst of Samaria!
21 Et dès que le Roi d'Israël les eut vus, il dit à Elisée: Frapperai-je, frapperai-je, mon père?
And the king of Israel saith unto Elisha, at his seeing them, 'Do I smite — do I smite — my father?'
22 Et il répondit: Tu ne frapperas point; frapperais-tu de ton épée et de ton arc ceux que tu aurais pris prisonniers? mets, [au contraire], du pain et de l'eau devant eux, et qu'ils mangent et boivent, et qu'après cela ils s'en aillent vers leur Seigneur.
And he saith, 'Thou dost not smite; those whom thou hast taken captive with thy sword and with thy bow art thou smiting? set bread and water before them, and they eat, and drink, and go unto their lord.'
23 Et il leur fit grand'chère, et ils mangèrent et burent; puis il les laissa aller, et ils s'en allèrent vers leur Seigneur. Depuis ce temps-là les partis de Syrie ne revinrent plus au pays d'Israël.
And he prepareth for them great provision, and they eat and drink, and he sendeth them away, and they go unto their lord: and troops of Aram have not added any more to come in to the land of Israel.
24 Mais il arriva, après ces choses que Ben-hadad Roi de Syrie, assembla toute son armée, et monta, et assiégea Samarie.
And it cometh to pass afterwards, that Ben-Hadad king of Aram gathereth all his camp, and goeth up, and layeth siege to Samaria,
25 Et il y eut une grande famine dans Samarie; car voilà, ils l'assiégèrent si longtemps, que la tête d'un âne se vendait quatre-vingts [pièces] d'argent, et la quatrième partie d'un kad de fiente de pigeons, cinq [pièces] d'argent.
and there is a great famine in Samaria, and lo, they are laying siege to it, till the head of an ass is at eighty silverlings, and a forth of the cab of dovesdung at five silverlings.
26 Or il arriva que comme le Roi d'Israël passait sur la muraille, une femme lui cria, en disant: Ô Roi mon Seigneur! délivre-moi.
And it cometh to pass, the king of Israel is passing by on the wall, and a woman hath cried unto him, saying, 'Save, my lord, O king.'
27 Et il répondit: Puisque l'Eternel ne te délivre point, comment te délivrerais-je? Serait-ce de l'aire ou de la cuve?
And he saith, 'Jehovah doth not save thee — whence do I save thee? out of the threshing-floor, or out of the wine-vat?'
28 Il lui dit encore: Qu'as-tu? Et elle répondit: Cette femme-là m'a dit: Donne ton fils, et mangeons-le aujourd'hui, et nous mangerons mon fils demain.
And the king saith to her, 'What — to thee?' and she saith, 'This woman said unto me, Give thy son, and we eat him to-day, and my son we eat to-morrow;
29 Ainsi nous avons bouilli mon fils, et l'avons mangé, et le jour d'après je lui ai dit: Donne ton fils, et mangeons-le; mais elle a caché son fils.
and we boil my son and eat him, and I say unto her on the next day, Give thy son, and we eat him; and she hideth her son.'
30 Or dès que le Roi eut entendu les paroles de cette femme, il déchira ses vêtements, (or il passait alors sur la muraille) ce que le peuple vit, et voilà il avait un sac sur sa chair en dedans.
And it cometh to pass, at the king's hearing the words of the woman, that he rendeth his garments, and he is passing by on the wall, and the people see, and lo, the sackcloth [is] on his flesh within.
31 C'est pourquoi [le Roi] dit: Dieu me fasse ainsi, et ainsi il y ajoute, si aujourd'hui la tête d'Elisée fils de Saphat demeure sur lui.
And he saith, 'Thus doth God do to me, and thus He doth add — if it remain — the head of Elisha son of Shaphat — upon him this day.'
32 Et Elisée étant assis dans sa maison, et les Anciens étant assis avec lui, le Roi envoya un homme de sa part; mais avant que le messager fût venu à [Elisée], [Elisée] dit aux Anciens: Ne voyez-vous pas que le fils de ce meurtrier-là a envoyé ici pour m'ôter la tête? Prenez garde, sitôt que le messager sera entré, de fermer la porte, et de l'arrêter à la porte; [n'entendez-vous] pas le bruit des pieds de son maître qui vient après lui?
And Elisha is sitting in his house, and the elders are sitting with him, and [the king] sendeth a man from before him; before the messenger doth come unto him, even he himself said unto the elders, 'Have ye seen that this son of the murderer hath sent to turn aside my head? see, at the coming in of the messenger, shut the door, and ye have held him fast at the door, is not the sound of the feet of his lord behind him?'
33 Et comme il parlait encore avec eux, voici le messager descendit vers lui, et [le Roi] dit: Voici, ce mal vient de l'Eternel, qu'attendrai-je plus de l'Eternel?
He is yet speaking with them, and lo, the messenger is coming down unto him, and he saith, 'Lo, this [is] the evil from Jehovah: what — do I wait for Jehovah any more?'
