1 Or Naaman, Chef de l'armée du Roi de Syrie était un homme puissant auprès de son Seigneur, et il était en grand honneur, parce que l'Eternel avait délivré les Syriens par son moyen, mais cet homme fort et vaillant était lépreux.

Now Naiman, the captain of the host of Syria, was a great man before his master, and highly respected, because by him the Lord had given deliverance to Syria, and the man was mighty in strength, [but] a leper.

2 Et quelques troupes sorties de Syrie, avaient amené prisonnière une petite fille du pays d'Israël, qui servait la femme de Naaman.

And the Syrians went forth in small bands, and took captive out of the land of Israel a little maid: and she waited on Naiman's wife.

3 Et elle dit à sa maîtresse; Je souhaiterais que mon Seigneur [se présentât] devant le Prophète qui est en Samarie, il l'aurait aussitôt délivré de sa lèpre.

And she said to her mistress, O that my lord were before the prophet of God in Samaria; then he would recover him from his leprosy.

4 Quelqu'un donc vint et le rapporta à son Seigneur, en disant: La fille qui est du pays d'Israël, a dit telle et telle chose.

And she went in and told her lord, and said, Thus and thus spoke the maid from the land of Israel.

5 Et le Roi de Syrie dit [à Naaman]: Va, vas-y, et j'enverrai des Lettres au Roi d'Israël. [Naaman] donc s'en alla, et prit avec soi dix talents d'argent, et six mille pièces d'or, et dix robes de rechange.

And the king of Syria said to Naiman, Go to, go, and I will send a letter to the king of Israel. And he went, and took in his hand ten talents of silver, and six thousand pieces of gold, and ten changes of raiment.

6 Et il apporta au Roi d'Israël des Lettres de telle teneur. Maintenant, dès-que ces Lettres te seront parvenues, sache que je t'ai envoyé Naaman mon serviteur, afin que tu le délivres de sa lèpre.

And he brought the letter to the king of Israel, saying, Now then, as soon as this letter shall reach you, behold, I have sent to you my servant Naiman, and you shall recover him from his leprosy.

7 Or, dès que le Roi d'Israël eut lu les Lettres il déchira ses vêtements, et dit: Suis-je Dieu pour faire mourir, et pour rendre la vie, que celui-ci envoie vers moi, pour délivrer un homme de sa lèpre? C'est pourquoi sachez maintenant, et voyez qu'il cherche occasion contre moi.

And it came to pass, when the king of Israel read the letter, [that] he tore his garments, and said, [Am] I God, to kill and to make alive, that this [man] sends to me to recover a man of his leprosy? consider, however, I pray you, and see that this [man] seeks an occasion against me.

8 Mais il arriva que dès qu'Elisée, homme de Dieu, eut appris que le Roi d'Israël avait déchiré ses vêtements, il envoya dire au Roi: Pourquoi as-tu déchiré tes vêtements? Qu'il s'en vienne maintenant vers moi, et qu'il sache qu'il y a un Prophète en Israël.

And it came to pass, when Elisaie heard that the king of Israel had tore his garments, that he sent to the king of Israel, saying, Therefore have you tore your garments? Let Naiman, I pray you, come to me, and let him know that there is a prophet in Israel.

9 Naaman donc s'en vint avec ses chevaux, et avec son chariot, et il se tint à la porte de la maison d'Elisée.

So Naiman came with horse and chariot, and stood at the door of the house of Elisaie.

10 Et Elisée envoya un messager vers lui, pour lui dire: Va, et te lave sept fois au Jourdain, et ta chair te reviendra [telle qu'auparavant], et tu seras net.

And Elisaie sent a messenger to him, saying, Go and wash seven times in Jordan, and your flesh shall return to you, and you shall be cleansed.

11 Mais Naaman se mit en grande colère, et s'en alla, en disant: Voilà, je pensais en moi-même: Il sortira incontinent, et invoquera le Nom de l'Eternel son Dieu, et il avancera sa main sur l'endroit de la plaie, et délivrera le lépreux,

And Naiman was angry, and departed, and said, Behold, I said, He will by all means come out to me, and stand, and call on the name of his God, and lay his hand upon the place, and recover the leper.

12 Abana et Parpar, fleuves de Damas, ne sont-ils pas meilleurs que toutes les eaux d'Israël? ne m'y laverais-je pas bien? mais deviendrais-je net? ainsi donc il s'en retournait, et s'en allait tout en colère.

[Are] not the Abana and Pharphar, rivers of Damascus, better than all the waters of Israel? may I not go and wash in them, and be cleansed? and he turned and went away in a rage.

13 Mais ses serviteurs s'approchèrent, et lui parlèrent, en disant: Mon père, si le Prophète t'eût dit quelque grande chose, ne l'eusses-tu pas faite? Combien plutôt donc [dois-tu faire] ce qu'il t'a dit: Lave-toi, et tu deviendras net?

And his servants came near and said to him, [Suppose] the prophet had spoken a great thing to you, would you not perform it? yet he has but said to you, Wash, and be cleansed.

14 Ainsi il descendit, et se plongea sept fois au Jourdain, suivant la parole de l'homme de Dieu; et sa chair lui revint semblable à la chair d'un petit enfant; et il fut net.

So Naiman went down, and dipped himself seven times in Jordan, according to the word of Elisaie: and his flesh returned to him as the flesh of a little child, and he was cleansed.

15 Alors il retourna vers l'homme de Dieu, lui et toute sa suite, et il vint se présenter devant lui; et dit: Voici, maintenant je connais qu'il n'[y a] point d'autre Dieu en toute la terre, qu'en Israël. Maintenant donc, je te prie, prends ce présent de ton serviteur.

And he and all his company returned to Elisaie, and he came and stood before him, and said, Behold, I know that there is no God in all the earth, save only in Israel: and now receive a blessing of your servant.

16 Mais [Elisée] répondit: L'Eternel, en la présence duquel je me tiens, est vivant, que je ne le prendrai point; et quoique [Naaman] le pressât fort de le prendre, [Elisée] le refusa.

And Elisaie said, [As] the Lord lives, before whom I stand, I will not take [one]. And he pressed him to take [one]: but he would not.

17 Naaman dit: Or je te prie, ne pourrait-on point donner de cette terre à ton serviteur la charge de deux mulets? car ton serviteur ne fera plus d'holocauste ni de sacrifice à d'autres dieux, mais seulement à l'Eternel.

And Naiman said, Well then, if not, let there be given to your servant, I pray you, the load [of a] yoke of mules; and you shall give me of the red earth: for henceforth your servant will not offer whole burnt offering or sacrifice to other gods, but only to the Lord by [reason of] this thing.

18 L'Eternel veuille pardonner ceci à ton serviteur; c'est que quand mon maître entrera dans la maison de Rimmon pour se prosterner là et qu'il s'appuiera sur ma main, je me prosternerai dans la maison de Rimmon; l'Eternel, [dis-je], veuille me le pardonner, quand je me prosternerai dans la maison de Rimmon.

And let the Lord be propitious to your servant when my master goes into the house of Remman to worship there, and he shall lean on my hand, and I shall bow down in the house of Remman when he bows down in the house of Remman; even let the Lord, I pray, be merciful to your servant in this matter.

19 Et [Elisée] lui dit: Va en paix. Ainsi étant parti d'auprès de lui il marcha environ quelque petit espace de pays.

And Elisaie said to Naiman, Go in peace. And he departed from him a little way.

20 Alors Guéhazi, le serviteur d Elisée homme de Dieu, dit: Voici, mon maître a refusé de prendre de la main de Naaman Syrien aucune chose de tout ce qu'il avait apporté, l'Eternel est vivant, que je courrai après lui, et que je prendrai quelque chose de lui.

And Giezi the servant of Elisaie said, Behold, my Lord has spared this Syrian Naiman, so as not to take of his hand what he has brought: as the Lord lives, I will surely run after him, and take somewhat of him.

21 Guéhazi donc courut après Naaman; et Naaman le voyant courir après lui, se jeta hors de son chariot au-devant de lui, et [lui] dit: Tout va-t-il bien?

So Giezi followed after Naiman: and Naiman saw him running after him, and turned back from his chariot to meet him.

22 Et il répondit: Tout va bien. Mon maître m'a envoyé pour te dire: Voici, à cette heure deux jeunes hommes de la montagne d'Ephraïm sont venus vers moi, qui sont des fils des Prophètes; je te prie donne-leur un talent d'argent; et deux robes de rechange.

And [Giezi] said, All is well: my master has sent me, saying, Behold, now are there come to me two young men of the sons of the prophets from mount Ephraim; give them, I pray you, a talent of silver, and two changes of raiment.

23 Et Naaman dit: Prends hardiment deux talents; et il le pressa tant qu'on lia deux talents d'argent dans deux sacs; [il lui donna] aussi deux robes de rechange; et il les donna à deux de ses serviteurs qui les portèrent devant lui.

And [Naiman] said, Take two talents of silver. And he took two talents of silver in two bags, and two changes of raiment, and put them upon two of his servants, and they bore them before him.

24 Et quand il fut venu en un lieu secret, il le prit d'entre leurs mains, et le serra dans une maison, après quoi il renvoya ces gens-là, et ils s'en retournèrent.

And he came to a secret place, and took them from their hands, and laid them up in the house, and dismissed the men.

25 Puis il entra, et se présenta devant son maître. Et Elisée lui dit: D'où viens-tu, Guéhazi? Et il lui répondit: Ton serviteur n'a été nulle part.

And he went in himself and stood before his master; and Elisaie said to him,

26 Mais [Elisée] lui dit: Mon cœur n'est-il pas allé là, quand l'homme s'est retourné de dessus son chariot au-devant de toi? Est-ce le temps de prendre de l'argent, et de prendre des vêtements, des oliviers, des vignes, du menu et du gros bétail, des serviteurs et des servantes?

Whence [come you], Giezi? and Giezi said, Your servant has not been hither or there. And Elisaie said to him, Went not my heart with you, when the man returned from his chariot to meet you? and now you have received silver, and now you have received raiment, and olive yards, and vineyards, and sheep, and oxen, and menservants, and maidservants.

27 C'est pourquoi là lèpre de Naaman s'attachera à toi, et à ta postérité à jamais. Et [Guéhazi] sortit de devant [Elisée blanc] de lèpre comme de la neige.

The leprosy also of Naiman shall cleave to you, and to your seed for ever. And he went out from his presence leprous, like snow.
