1 Or une veuve d'un des fils des Prophètes cria à Elisée, en disant: Ton serviteur mon mari est mort, et tu sais que ton serviteur craignait l'Eternel, et son créancier est venu pour prendre mes deux enfants, afin qu'ils soient ses esclaves.

And a certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets has cried to Elisha, saying, “Your servant, my husband, is dead, and you have known that your servant was fearing YHWH, and the lender has come to take my two children to himself for servants.”

2 Et Elisée lui répondit: Qu'est-ce que je ferai pour toi? déclare-moi ce que tu as en la maison. Et elle dit: Ta servante n'a rien dans toute la maison qu'un pot d'huile.

And Elisha says to her, “What do I do for you? Declare to me, what do you have in the house?” And she says, “Your maidservant has nothing in the house except a pot of oil.”

3 Alors il lui dit: Va, demande des vaisseaux dans la rue à tous tes voisins, des vaisseaux vides, et n'en demande pas même en petit nombre.

And he says, “Go, ask [for] vessels for yourself from outside, from all your neighbors—empty vessels—let [them] not be few;

4 Puis rentre, et ferme la porte sur toi et sur tes enfants, et verse [de ce pot d'huile] dans tous ces vaisseaux, faisant ôter ceux qui seront pleins.

and you have entered, and have shut the door on you, and on your sons, and have poured it into all these vessels, and the full ones you remove.”

5 Elle se retira donc d'auprès de lui, et ayant fermé la porte sur elle et sur ses enfants, ils lui apportaient [les vaisseaux], et elle versait.

And she goes from him, and shuts the door on her, and on her sons; they are bringing [them] near to her, and she is pouring [it] out,

6 Et il arriva qu'aussitôt qu'elle eut rempli les vaisseaux, elle dit à son fils: Apporte-moi encore un vaisseau; et il répondit: Il n'y a plus de vaisseau; et l'huile s'arrêta.

and it comes to pass, at the filling of the vessels, that she says to her son, “Bring another vessel near to me,” and he says to her, “There is not another vessel”; and the oil stays.

7 Puis elle s'en vint, et le raconta à l'homme de Dieu, qui lui dit: Va, vends l'huile, et paye ta dette; et vous vivrez, toi et tes fils, de ce qu'il y aura de reste.

And she comes and declares [it] to the man of God, and he says, “Go, sell the oil, and repay your loan; and you [and] your sons live off the rest.”

8 Or il arriva qu'un jour qu'Elisée passait par Sunem, où il y avait une femme qui avait de grands biens, elle le retint avec grande instance à manger du pain; et toutes les fois qu'il passait, il s'y retirait pour manger du pain.

And the day comes that Elisha passes over to Shunem, and there [is] a great woman, and she lays hold on him to eat bread, and it comes to pass, at the time of his passing over, he turns aside there to eat bread,

9 Et elle dit à son mari: Voilà, je connais maintenant que cet homme qui passe souvent chez nous, est un saint homme de Dieu.

and she says to her husband, “Now behold, I have known that he is a holy man of God, passing over by us continually;

10 Faisons-lui, je te prie, une petite chambre haute, et mettons-lui là un lit, une table, un siège, et un chandelier, afin que quand il viendra chez nous, il se retire là.

please let us make a little upper chamber of the wall, and we set for him there a bed, and a table, and a high seat, and a lampstand; and it has been, in his coming to us, he turns aside there.”

11 Etant donc un jour venu là, il se retira dans cette chambre haute, et y reposa.

And the day comes that he comes in there, and turns aside to the upper chamber, and lies there,

12 Puis il dit à Guéhazi son serviteur: Appelle cette Sunamite, et il l'appela; et elle se présenta devant lui.

and he says to his young man Gehazi, “Call for this Shunammite”; and he calls for her, and she stands before him.

13 Et il dit à Guéhazi: Dis maintenant à cette femme: Voici, tu as pris tous ces soins pour nous, que pourrait-on faire pour toi? as-tu à parler au Roi, ou au Chef de l'armée? Et elle répondit: J'habite au milieu de mon peuple.

And he says to him, “Now say to her, Behold, you have troubled yourself concerning us with all this trouble; what can [I] do for you? Is it to speak for you to the king, or to the head of the host?” And she says, “I am dwelling in the midst of my people.”

14 Et il dit [à Guéhazi]: Que faudrait-il faire pour elle? Et Guéhazi répondit: Certes elle n'a point de fils, et son mari est vieux.

And he says, “And what can [I] do for her?” And Gehazi says, “Truly she has no son, and her husband [is] aged.”

15 Et [Elisée] lui dit: Appelle-la; et il l'appela, et elle se présenta à la porte.

And he says, “Call for her”; and he calls for her, and she stands at the opening,

16 Et il lui dit: L'année qui vient, [et] en cette même saison, tu embrasseras un fils. Et elle répondit: Mon seigneur, homme de Dieu, ne mens point, ne mens point à ta servante!

and he says, “At this season, according to the time of life, you are embracing a son”; and she says, “No, my lord, O man of God, do not lie to your maidservant.”

17 Cette femme-là donc conçut, et enfanta un fils un an après, en la même saison, comme Elisée lui avait dit.

And the woman conceives and bears a son, at this season, according to the time of life that Elisha spoke of to her.

18 Et l'enfant étant devenu grand, il sortit un jour pour [aller trouver] son père, vers les moissonneurs.

And the boy grows, and the day comes that he goes out to his father, to the reapers,

19 Et il dit à son père: Ma tête! ma tête! et le père dit au serviteur: Porte-le à sa mère.

and he says to his father, “My head, my head”; and he says to the young man, “Carry him to his mother”;

20 Il le porta donc et l'amena à sa mère, et il demeura sur ses genoux jusqu'à midi, puis il mourut.

and he carries him, and brings him to his mother, and he sits on her knees until the noon, and dies.

21 Et elle monta, et le coucha sur le lit de l'homme de Dieu, et ayant fermé la porte sur lui, elle sortit.

And she goes up, and lays him on the bed of the man of God, and shuts [the door] on him, and goes out,

22 Puis elle cria à son mari, et dit: Je te prie envoie-moi un des serviteurs, et une ânesse, et je m'en irai jusqu'à l'homme de Dieu, puis je retournerai.

and calls to her husband and says, “Please send one of the young men and one of the donkeys to me, and I run to the man of God, and return.”

23 Et il dit: Pourquoi vas-tu vers lui aujourd'hui? ce n'est point la nouvelle Lune, ni le Sabbat. Et elle répondit: Tout va bien.

And he says, “Why are you going to him today? [It is] neither new moon nor Sabbath!” And she says, “Peace [to you]!”

24 Elle fit donc seller l'ânesse, et dit à son serviteur: Mène-moi, et marche, [et] ne me retarde pas d'avancer chemin sur l'Anesse, si je ne te le dis.

And she saddles the donkey and says to her young man, “Lead, and go, do not restrain riding for me, except I have commanded [so] to you.”

25 Ainsi elle s'en alla, et vint vers l'homme de Dieu en la montagne de Carmel; et sitôt que l'homme de Dieu l'eut vue venant vers lui, il dit à Guéhazi son serviteur: Voilà la Sunamite.

And she goes, and comes to the man of God, to the hill of Carmel, and it comes to pass, at the man of God’s seeing her from within view, that he says to his young man Gehazi, “Behold, this Shunammite;

26 Va, cours au-devant d'elle, et lui dis: Te portes-tu bien? ton mari se porte-t-il bien? l'enfant se porte-t-il bien? Et elle répondit: Nous nous portons bien.

now please run to meet her, and say to her, Is there peace to you? Is there peace to your husband? Is there peace to the boy?” And she says, “Peace.”

27 Puis elle vint vers l'homme de Dieu en la montagne, et empoigna ses pieds; et Guéhazi s'approcha pour la repousser, mais l'homme de Dieu lui dit: Laisse-la, car elle a son cœur angoissé, et l'Eternel me l'a caché, et ne me l'a point déclaré.

And she comes to the man of God, to the hill, and lays hold on his feet, and Gehazi comes near to thrust her away, and the man of God says, “Leave her alone, for her soul [is] bitter to her, and YHWH has hidden [it] from me, and has not declared [it] to me.”

28 Alors elle dit: Avais-je demandé un fils à mon Seigneur? [et] ne te dis-je pas: Ne fais point que je sois trompée?

And she says, “Did I ask for a son from my lord? Did I not say, Do not deceive me?”

29 Et il dit à Guéhazi: Trousse tes reins, prends mon bâton en ta main, et t'en va; si tu trouves quelqu'un, ne le salue point; et si quelqu'un te salue, ne lui réponds point; puis tu mettras mon bâton sur le visage de l'enfant.

And he says to Gehazi, “Gird up your loins, and take my staff in your hand, and go; when you meet a man, you do not greet him; and when a man greets you, you do not answer him; and you have laid my staff on the face of the youth.”

30 Mais la mère de l'enfant dit: L'Eternel est vivant, et ton âme est vivante, que je ne te laisserai point; il se leva donc, et s'en alla après elle.

And the mother of the youth says, “YHWH lives, and your soul lives—if I leave you”; and he rises and goes after her.

31 Or Guéhazi était passé devant eux, et avait mis le bâton sur le visage de l'enfant; mais il n'y eut en cet enfant ni voix, ni apparence qu'il eût entendu; ainsi [Guéhazi] s'en retourna au devant d'Elisée, et lui en fit le rapport, en disant: L'enfant ne s'est point réveillé.

And Gehazi has passed on before them, and lays the staff on the face of the youth, and there is no voice, and there is no attention, and he turns back to meet him, and declares to him, saying, “The youth has not awoken.”

32 Elisée donc entra dans la maison, et voilà l'enfant mort était couché sur son lit.

And Elisha comes into the house, and behold, the youth is dead, laid on his bed,

33 Et étant entré, il ferma la porte sur eux deux, et fit sa prière à l'Eternel.

and he goes in and shuts the door on them both, and prays to YHWH.

34 Puis il monta et se coucha sur l'enfant, et mit sa bouche sur la bouche de l'enfant, et ses yeux sur ses yeux, et ses paumes sur ses paumes, et se pencha sur lui; et la chair de l'enfant fut échauffée.

And he goes up, and lies down on the boy, and puts his mouth on his mouth, and his eyes on his eyes, and his hands on his hands, and stretches himself on him, and the flesh of the boy becomes warm;

35 Puis il se retirait et allait par la maison, tantôt dans un lieu, tantôt dans un autre, et il remontait, et se penchait encore sur lui; enfin l'enfant éternua par sept fois, et ouvrit ses yeux.

and he turns back and walks in the house, once here and once there, and goes up and stretches himself on him, and the youth sneezes until seven times, and the youth opens his eyes.

36 Alors [Elisée] appela Guéhazi, et lui dit: Appelle cette Sunamite; et il l'appela; et elle vint à lui; et il lui dit: Prends ton fils.

And he calls to Gehazi and says, “Call to this Shunammite”; and he calls her, and she comes to him, and he says, “Lift up your son.”

37 Elle s'en vint donc, se jeta à ses pieds, et se prosterna en terre; puis elle prit son fils, et sortit.

And she goes in, and falls at his feet, and bows herself to the earth, and lifts up her son, and goes out.

38 Après cela Elisée revint à Guilgal. Or il y avait une famine au pays, et les fils des Prophètes étaient assis devant lui; et il dit à son serviteur: Mets la grande chaudière, et cuis du potage pour les fils des Prophètes.

And Elisha has turned back to Gilgal, and the famine [is] in the land, and the sons of the prophets are sitting before him, and he says to his young man, “Set on the great pot, and boil stew for the sons of the prophets.”

39 Mais quelqu'un étant sorti aux champs pour cueillir des herbes, trouva de la vigne sauvage, et en cueillit des coloquintes sauvages pleine sa robe, et étant revenu, il les mit par pièces dans la chaudière où était le potage; car on ne savait point ce que c'était.

And one goes out to the field to gather herbs, and finds a vine of the field, and gathers gourds of the field from it—the fullness of his garment—and comes in and splits [them] into the pot of stew, for they did not know [them];

40 Et on dressa de ce potage à quelques-uns pour en manger; mais sitôt qu'ils eurent mangé de ce potage, ils s'écrièrent et dirent: Homme de Dieu, la mort est dans la chaudière; et ils n'en purent manger.

and they pour out for the men to eat, and it comes to pass at their eating of the stew, that they have cried out, and say, “Death [is] in the pot, O man of God!” And they have not been able to eat.

41 Et il dit: Apportez-moi de la farine; et il la jeta dans la chaudière, puis il dit: Qu'on en dresse à ce peuple, afin qu'il mange; et il n'y avait plus rien de mauvais dans la chaudière.

And he says, “Then bring a meal”; and he casts into the pot and says, “Pour out for the people, and they eat”; and there was no bad thing in the pot.

42 Alors il vint un homme de Bahalsalisa, qui apporta à l'homme de Dieu du pain des premiers fruits, [savoir] vingt pains d'orge, et du grain en épi étant avec sa paille; et [Elisée] dit: Donne [cela] à ce peuple, afin qu'ils mangent.

And a man has come from Ba‘al-Shalishah, and brings to the man of God bread of first-fruits, twenty loaves of barley, and full ears of grain in its husk, and he says, “Give to the people, and they eat.”

43 Et son serviteur lui dit: Donnerais-je ceci à cent hommes? Mais il lui répondit: Donne-le à ce peuple, et qu'ils mangent. Car ainsi a dit l'Eternel: Ils mangeront, et il y en aura de reste.

And his minister says, “How do I give this before one hundred men?” And he says, “Give to the people, and they eat, for thus said YHWH: Eat and leave”;

44 Il mit donc cela devant eux, et ils mangèrent, et ils en laissèrent de reste, suivant la parole de l'Eternel.

and he gives before them, and they eat and leave, according to the word of YHWH.
