1 Timothée 6

1 Que tous les esclaves sachent qu'ils doivent à leurs maîtres toute sorte d'honneur, afin qu'on ne blasphème point le Nom de Dieu, et [sa] doctrine.

Let all who are under the yoke of slavery hold their own masters to be deserving of honour, so that the name of God and the Christian teaching may not be spoken against.

2 Que ceux aussi qui ont des maîtres fidèles, ne les méprisent point sous prétexte qu'ils sont [leurs] frères, mais plutôt qu'ils les servent à cause qu'ils sont fidèles, et bien-aimés [de Dieu, étant] participants de la grâce; enseigne ces choses, et exhorte.

And those who have believing masters should not be wanting in respect towards them because they are their brethren, but should serve them all the more willingly because those who profit by the faithful service rendered are believers and are friends.

3 Si quelqu'un enseigne autrement, et ne se soumet point aux saines paroles de notre Seigneur Jésus-Christ, et à la doctrine qui est selon la piété,

So teach and exhort. If any one is a teacher of any other kind of doctrine, and refuses assent to wholesome instructions--those of our Lord Jesus Christ--and the teaching that harmonizes with true godliness,

4 Il est enflé [d'orgueil], ne sachant rien, mais il est malade après des questions et des disputes de paroles, d'où naissent des envies, des querelles, des médisances, et de mauvais soupçons.

he is puffed up with pride and has no true knowledge, but is crazy over discussions and controversies about words which give rise to envy, quarrelling, revilings, ill-natured suspicions,

5 De vaines disputes d'hommes corrompus d'entendement, et privés de la vérité, qui estiment que la piété est un moyen de gagner: retire-toi de ces sortes de gens.

and persistent wranglings on the part of people whose intellects are disordered and they themselves blinded to all knowledge of the truth; who imagine that godliness means gain.

6 Or la piété avec le contentement d'esprit, est un grand gain.

And godliness is gain, when associated with contentment;

7 Car nous n'avons rien apporté au monde, et aussi il est évident que nous n'en pouvons rien emporter.

for we brought nothing into the world, nor can we carry anything out of it;

8 Mais ayant la nourriture, et de quoi nous puissions être couverts, cela nous suffira.

and if we have food and clothing, with these we will be satisfied.

9 Or ceux qui veulent devenir riches, tombent dans la tentation, et dans le piége, et en plusieurs désirs fous et nuisibles, qui plongent les hommes dans le malheur, et dans la perdition.

But people who are determined to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many unwise and pernicious ways which sink mankind in destruction and ruin.

10 Car c'est la racine de tous les maux que la convoitise des richesses, de laquelle quelques-uns étant possédés, ils se sont détournés de la foi, et se sont enserrés eux-mêmes dans plusieurs douleurs.

For from love of money all sorts of evils arise; and some have so hankered after money as to be led astray from the faith and be pierced through with countless sorrows.

11 Mais toi, homme de Dieu! fuis ces choses, et recherche la justice, la piété, la foi, la charité, la patience, la douceur;

But you, O man of God, must flee from these things; and strive for uprightness, godliness, good faith, love, fortitude, and a forgiving temper.

12 Combats le bon combat de la foi; saisis la vie éternelle, à laquelle aussi tu es appelé, et dont tu as fait une belle profession devant beaucoup de témoins. (aiōnios g166)

Exert all your strength in the honourable struggle for the faith; lay hold of the Life of the Ages, to which you were called, when you made your noble profession of faith before many witnesses. (aiōnios g166)

13 Je t'ordonne devant Dieu, qui donne la vie à toutes choses; et devant Jésus-Christ, qui a fait cette belle confession devant Ponce Pilate,

I charge you--as in the presence of God who gives life to all creatures, and of Christ Jesus who at the bar of Pontius Pilate made a noble profession of faith--

14 De garder ce commandement, en te conservant sans tache et irrépréhensible, jusques à l'apparition de notre Seigneur Jésus-Christ,

that you keep God's commandments stainlessly and without reproach till the Appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ.

15 Laquelle le bienheureux et seul Prince, Roi des Rois, et Seigneur des Seigneurs, montrera en sa propre saison;

For, as its appointed time, this will be brought about by the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords,

16 Lui qui seul possède l'immortalité, et qui habite une lumière inaccessible, lequel nul des hommes n'a vu, et ne peut voir; et auquel soit l'honneur et la force éternelle, Amen. (aiōnios g166)

who alone possesses immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light, and whom no man has seen or can see. To Him be eternal honour and power! Amen. (aiōnios g166)

17 Dénonce à ceux qui sont riches en ce monde, qu'ils ne soient point hautains, et qu'ils ne mettent point leur confiance dans l'incertitude des richesses, mais au Dieu vivant, qui nous donne toutes choses abondamment pour en jouir. (aiōn g165)

Impress on those who are rich in the present age that they must not be haughty nor set their hopes on riches--that unstable foundation--but on God who provides us richly with all things for our enjoyment. (aiōn g165)

18 Qu'ils fassent du bien; qu'ils soient riches en bonnes œuvres; qu'ils soient prompts à donner, libéraux.

They must be beneficent, rich in noble deeds, open-handed and liberal;

19 Se faisant un trésor pour l'avenir, appuyé sur un fondement solide, afin qu'ils obtiennent la vie éternelle.

storing up for themselves that which shall be a solid foundation for the future, that they may lay hold of the Life which is life indeed.

20 Timothée, garde le dépôt; en fuyant les disputes vaines et profanes, et les contradictions d'une science faussement ainsi nommée.

O Timothy, guard the truths entrusted to you, shunning irreligious and frivolous talk, and controversy with what is falsely called 'knowledge';

21 De laquelle quelques-uns faisant profession, se sont détournés de la foi. Que la grâce soit avec toi, Amen!

of which some have spoken boastfully in connexion with the true faith, and have erred. Grace be with you all.
