1 Samuel 11

1 Or Nahas Hammonite monta, et se campa contre Jabés de Galaad. Et tous ceux de Jabés dirent à Nahas: Traite alliance avec nous, et nous te servirons.

And, about a month afterward, it happened that Nahash the Ammonite ascended and began to fight against Jabesh Gilead. And all the men of Jabesh said to Nahash, “Consider a pact with us, and we will serve you.”

2 Mais Nahas Hammonite leur répondit: Je traiterai [alliance] avec vous à cette condition, que je vous crève à tous l'œil droit, et que je mette cela pour opprobre sur tout Israël.

And Nahash the Ammonite responded to them, “With this will I strike a pact with you: if I may pluck out all your right eyes, and set you as a disgrace against all of Israel.”

3 Et les Anciens de Jabés lui dirent: Donne-nous sept jours de trêve, et nous enverrons des messagers par tous les quartiers d'Israël, et s'il n'y a personne qui nous délivre, nous nous rendrons à toi.

And the elders of Jabesh said to him: “Grant to us seven days, so that we may send messengers to all the borders of Israel. And if there is no one who may defend us, we will go out to you.”

4 Les messagers donc vinrent en Guib-ha-Saül, et dirent ces paroles devant le peuple; et tout le peuple éleva sa voix, et pleura.

Therefore, the messengers arrived at Gibeah of Saul. And they spoke these words in the hearing of the people. And all the people lifted up their voice and wept.

5 Et voici Saül revenait des champs derrière ses bœufs; et il dit: Qu'est-ce qu'a ce peuple pour pleurer ainsi? Et on lui récita ce qu'avaient dit ceux de Jabés.

And behold, Saul arrived, following oxen from the field. And he said, “What has happened to the people that they would weep?” And they explained to him the words of the men from Jabesh.

6 Or l'Esprit de Dieu saisit Saül, lorsqu'il entendit ces paroles, et il fut embrasé de colère.

And the Spirit of the Lord rose up within Saul when he had heard these words, and his fury was enraged exceedingly.

7 Et il prit une couple de bœufs, et les coupa en morceaux, et en envoya dans tous les quartiers d'Israël par des messagers exprès, en disant: On en fera de même aux bœufs de tous ceux qui ne sortiront point, et qui ne suivront point Saül et Samuel. Et la frayeur de l'Eternel tomba sur le peuple, et ils sortirent comme si ce n'eût été qu'un seul homme.

And taking both the oxen, he cut them into pieces, and he sent them into all the borders of Israel, by the hands of messengers, saying, “Whoever will not go out and follow Saul and Samuel, so shall it be done to his oxen.” Therefore, the fear of the Lord entered into the people, and they went out like one man.

8 Et [Saül] les dénombra en Bézec; et il y eut trois cent mille hommes des enfants d'Israël, et trente mille des gens de Juda.

And he took a census of them at Bezek. And there were three hundred thousand of the sons of Israel. And there were thirty thousand of the men of Judah.

9 Après ils dirent aux messagers qui étaient venus: Vous parlerez ainsi à ceux de Jabés de Galaad: Vous serez délivrés demain quand le soleil sera en sa force. Les messagers donc s'en revinrent, et rapportèrent cela à ceux de Jabés, qui [s'en] réjouirent.

And they said to the messengers who had arrived: “So shall you say to the men who are of Jabesh Gilead: ‘Tomorrow, when the sun will be hot, you shall have salvation.’” Therefore, the messengers went and announced it to the men of Jabesh, who became joyful.

10 Et ceux de Jabés dirent [aux Hammonites]: Demain nous nous rendrons à vous, et vous nous ferez tout ce qui vous semblera bon.

And they said, “In the morning, we will go out to you. And you may do whatever you please with us.”

11 Et dès le lendemain Saül mit le peuple en trois bandes, et ils entrèrent dans le camp sur la veille du matin, et ils frappèrent les Hammonites jusques vers la chaleur du jour; et ceux qui demeurèrent de reste furent tellement dispersés çà et là, qu'il n'en demeura pas deux ensemble.

And it happened that, when the next day had arrived, Saul arranged the people into three parts. And he entered into the middle of the camp at the early morning watch, and he struck down the Ammonites until the day grew hot. Then the remainder were dispersed, so much so that not even two of them were left together.

12 Et le peuple dit à Samuel: Qui est-ce qui dit: Saül régnera-t-il sur nous? Donnez-nous ces hommes-là, et nous les ferons mourir.

And the people said to Samuel: “Who is the one who said, ‘Should Saul reign over us?’ Present the men, and we will put them to death.”

13 Alors Saül dit: On ne fera mourir personne en ce jour, parce que l'Eternel a délivré aujourd'hui Israël.

And Saul said: “No one shall be killed on this day. For today the Lord has accomplished salvation in Israel.”

14 Et Samuel dit au peuple: Venez, et allons à Guilgal, et nous y renouvellerons la Royauté.

Then Samuel said to the people, “Come, and let us go to Gilgal, and let us renew the kingdom there.”

15 Et tout le peuple s'en alla à Guilgal; et là ils établirent Saül pour Roi devant l'Eternel à Guilgal, et ils offrirent là des sacrifices de prospérité devant l'Eternel; et là, Saül et tous ceux d'Israël se réjouirent beaucoup.

And all the people traveled to Gilgal. And there they made Saul king, in the sight of the Lord at Gilgal. And there they immolated victims of peace, before the Lord. And there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced exceedingly.
