1 Pierre 4
1 Puis donc que Christ a souffert pour nous en la chair, vous aussi soyez armés de cette même pensée, que celui qui a souffert en la chair, a désisté du péché;
Since, then, Christ suffered in body, arm yourselves with the same resolve as he; for he who has suffered in body has ceased to sin,
2 Afin que durant le temps qui reste en la chair, vous ne viviez plus selon les convoitises des hommes, mais selon la volonté de Dieu.
and so will live the rest of his earthly life guided, not by human passions, but by the will of God.
3 Car il nous doit suffire d'avoir accompli la volonté des Gentils, durant le temps de notre vie passée, quand nous nous abandonnions aux impudicités, aux convoitises, à l'ivrognerie, aux excès dans le manger et dans le boire, et aux idolâtries abominables;
Surely in the past you have spent time enough living as the Gentiles delight to live. For your path has lain among scenes of debauchery, licentiousness, drunkenness, revelry, hard-drinking, and profane idolatry.
4 Ce que [ces Gentils] trouvant fort étrange, ils vous blâment de ce que vous ne courez pas avec eux dans un même abandonnement de dissolution.
And, because you do not run to the same extremes of profligacy as others, they are astonished, and malign you.
5 Mais ils rendront compte à celui qui est prêt à juger les vivants et les morts.
But they will have to answer for their conduct to him who is ready to judge both the living and the dead.
6 Car c'est aussi pour cela qu'il a été évangélisé aux morts, afin qu'ils fussent jugés selon les hommes en la chair, et qu'ils vécussent selon Dieu dans l'esprit.
For that was why the good news was told to the dead also – that, after they have been judged in the body, as people are judged, they might live in the spirit, as God lives.
7 Or la fin de toutes choses est proche: soyez donc sobres, et vigilants à prier.
But the end of all things is near. Therefore exercise self-restraint and be calm, so that you may be able to pray.
8 Mais surtout, ayez entre vous une ardente charité: car la charité couvrira une multitude de péchés.
Above all things, let your love for one another be earnest, for ‘Love throws a veil over countless sins.’
9 Soyez hospitaliers les uns envers les autres, sans murmures.
Never grudge hospitality to one another.
10 Que chacun selon le don qu'il a reçu, l'emploie pour le service des autres, comme bons dispensateurs de la différente grâce de Dieu.
Whatever the gift that each has received, use it in the service of others, as good stewards of the varied bounty of God.
11 Si quelqu'un parle, [qu'il parle] comme [annonçant] les paroles de Dieu, si quelqu'un administre, [qu'il administre] comme par la puissance que Dieu lui en a fournie; afin qu'en toutes choses Dieu soit glorifié par Jésus-Christ, auquel appartient la gloire et la force aux siècles des siècles, Amen! (aiōn g165)
When anyone speaks, they should speak as one who is delivering the oracles of God. When anyone is endeavoring to serve others, they should do so in reliance on the strength which God supplies; so that in everything God may be honored through Jesus Christ – to whom be ascribed all honor and might for ever and ever. Amen. (aiōn g165)
12 Mes bien-aimés, ne trouvez point étrange quand vous êtes [comme] dans une fournaise pour votre épreuve, comme s'il vous arrivait quelque chose d'extraordinaire.
Dear friends, do not be astonished at the trial of fire that you are passing through, to test you, as though something strange were happening to you.
13 Mais en ce que vous participez aux souffrances de Christ, réjouissez vous; afin qu'aussi à la révélation de sa gloire, vous vous réjouissiez avec allégresse.
No, the more you share the sufferings of the Christ, the more may you rejoice, that, when the time comes for the manifestation of his glory, you may rejoice and exult.
14 Si on vous dit des injures pour le Nom de Christ, vous êtes bienheureux: car l'Esprit de gloire et de Dieu repose sur vous, lequel est blasphémé par ceux qui [vous noircissent] mais pour vous vous le glorifiez.
If you are insulted for bearing the name of Christ, count yourselves blessed; because the divine glory and the Spirit of God are resting on you.
15 Que nul de vous ne souffre comme meurtrier, ou larron, ou malfaiteur, ou curieux des affaires d'autrui.
I need hardly say that no one among you must suffer as a murderer, or a thief, or a criminal, or for interfering in matters which do not concern Christians.
16 Mais si quelqu'un souffre comme Chrétien, qu'il n'en ait point de honte, mais qu'il glorifie Dieu en cela.
But, if someone suffers as a Christian, they should not be ashamed of it; they should bring honor to God even though they bear that name.
17 Car il est temps que le jugement commence par la maison de Dieu; or [s'il commence] premièrement par nous, quelle sera la fin de ceux qui n'obéissent point à l'Evangile de Dieu?
For the time has come for judgment to begin with the house of God; and, if it begins with us, what will be the end of those who reject God’s good news?
18 Et si le juste est difficilement sauvé, où comparaîtra le méchant et le pécheur?
If ‘a good person is saved only with difficulty, what will become of the godless and the sinful?’
19 Que ceux-là donc aussi qui souffrent par la volonté de Dieu, puisqu'ils font ce qui est bon lui recommandent leurs âmes, comme au fidèle Créateur.
Therefore, I say, let those who suffer, because God wills it so, commit their lives into the hands of a faithful Creator, and persevere in doing right.
