1 Rois 3
1 Or Salomon s'allia avec Pharaon Roi d'Egypte, et prit pour femme la fille de Pharaon, et l'amena en la Cité de David, jusqu'à ce qu'il eût achevé de bâtir sa maison, et la maison de l'Eternel, et la muraille de Jérusalem tout à l'entour.
Solomon made a marriage alliance with Pharaoh of Egypt. He married Pharaoh's daughter and brought her to live in the City of David until he finished building his palace, the Lord's Temple, and the walls surrounding Jerusalem.
2 Seulement le peuple sacrifiait dans les hauts lieux, parce que jusques alors on n'avait point bâti de maison au Nom de l'Eternel.
In those days, however, the people still sacrificed on the high places because a Temple to honor the Lord hadn't yet been built.
3 Et Salomon aima l'Eternel, marchant selon les ordonnances de David son père, seulement il sacrifiait dans les hauts lieux, et y faisait des parfums.
Solomon showed he loved the Lord by following the instructions of his father David, except that he sacrificed and burned offerings on the high places.
4 Le Roi donc s'en alla à Gabaon pour y sacrifier; car c'était le plus grand des hauts lieux; et Salomon sacrifia mille holocaustes sur l'autel qui était là.
The king went to Gibeon to sacrifice there, for it was the leading high place. Solomon presented one thousand burnt offerings on the altar there.
5 Et l'Eternel apparut de nuit à Salomon à Gabaon dans un songe, et Dieu lui dit: Demande ce que [tu veux que] je te donne.
The Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream at Gibeon. God said to him, “Ask what you want me to give you.”
6 Et Salomon répondit: Tu as usé d'une grande gratuité envers ton serviteur David mon père, selon qu'il a marché devant toi en vérité, en justice, et en droiture de cœur envers toi, et tu lui as gardé cette grande gratuité de lui avoir donné un fils qui est assis sur son trône, comme [il paraît] aujourd'hui.
Solomon replied, “You showed your servant David, my father, great trustworthy love because he lived his life before you with faithfulness, doing what was right and committed to principle. You have continued to show this great trustworthy love by giving him a son to sit on his throne to this day.
7 Or maintenant, ô Eternel mon Dieu! tu as fait régner ton serviteur en la place de David mon père, et je ne suis qu'un jeune homme, qui ne sait point comment il faut se conduire.
Now, Lord God, you have made me king in place of my father David. But I am like an inexperienced young boy who doesn't know what to do.
8 Et ton serviteur est parmi ton peuple, que tu as choisi, [et] qui est un grand peuple qui ne se peut compter ni nombrer, tant il est en grand nombre.
I, your servant, am here in among your chosen people, a great people that are so many they cannot be counted.
9 Donne donc à ton serviteur un cœur intelligent pour juger ton peuple, [et] pour discerner entre le bien et le mal; car qui pourrait juger ton peuple, qui est d'une si grande conséquence?
So please give me a mind that's receptive so I can rule your people well, understanding the difference between right and wrong, for who can rule this difficult people of yours?”
10 Et ce discours plut à l'Eternel, en ce que Salomon lui avait fait une telle demande.
The Lord considered that what Solomon asked for was good.
11 Et Dieu lui dit: Parce que tu m'as fait cette demande, et que tu n'as point demandé une longue vie, et que tu n'as point demandé des richesses, et que tu n'as point demandé la mort de tes ennemis, mais que tu as demandé de l'intelligence pour rendre la justice;
So God told him, “Because you asked for this, and you didn't ask for a long life, or wealth, or the death of your enemies, but instead you asked for understanding to know what is right,
12 Voici, j'ai fait selon ta parole; voici, je t'ai donné un cœur sage et intelligent, de sorte qu'il n'y en a point eu de semblable avant toi, et il n'y en aura point après toi qui te soit semblable.
I am giving you what you asked for. I am giving you a mind that is wise, with an understanding of what is right, more than anyone else before you or after you.
13 Et même je t'ai donné ce que tu n'as point demandé, savoir les richesses et la gloire, de sorte qu'il n'y aura point eu [de Roi] semblable à toi entre les Rois, tant que tu vivras.
I am also giving you what you did not ask for, wealth and status—so much so that no king will compare to you for the whole of your life.
14 Et si tu marches dans mes voies pour garder mes ordonnances et mes commandements, comme David ton père y a marché, je prolongerai aussi tes jours.
And if you follow my ways by keeping my laws and my commands, as your father David did, I will give you a long life.”
15 Alors Salomon se réveilla, et voilà le songe. Puis il s'en retourna à Jérusalem, et se tint devant l'Arche de l'alliance de l'Eternel, et offrit des holocaustes et des sacrifices de prospérités, et fit un festin à tous ses serviteurs.
Then Solomon woke up and realized he'd had a dream. He went back to Jerusalem, and stood in front of the Ark of the Lord's Agreement and he presented burnt offerings and friendship offerings, and he held a feast for all his officials.
16 Alors deux femmes de mauvaise vie vinrent au Roi, et se présentèrent devant lui.
Later two prostitutes came to the king and stood before him for judgment.
17 Et l'une de ces femmes dit: Hélas, mon Seigneur! Nous demeurions cette femme-ci et moi dans une même maison, et j'ai accouché chez elle dans cette maison-là.
One of the women spoke up, saying, “If it please Your Majesty: I share a house with this woman. I had a baby while she was living in the house.
18 Le troisième jour après mon accouchement cette femme a aussi accouché, et nous étions ensemble; il n'y avait aucun étranger avec nous dans cette maison, nous étions seulement nous deux dans cette maison.
Three days after the birth of my baby, this woman also had a baby. We were together; there was no one else in the house, just the two of us.
19 Or l'enfant de cette femme est mort la nuit, parce qu'elle s'était couchée sur lui.
During the night this woman's son died because she rolled over on him.
20 Mais elle s'est levée à minuit, et a pris mon fils d'auprès de moi, pendant que ta servante dormait, et l'a couché dans son sein, et elle a couché dans mon sein son fils mort.
She got up in the middle of the night and took my son from beside me while I was sleeping. She lay him close beside her to cuddle him, and she lay her dead son close beside me.
21 Et m'étant levée le matin pour allaiter mon fils, voilà, il était mort, mais l'ayant exactement considéré au matin, voilà, ce n'était point mon fils, que j'avais enfanté.
When I got up in the morning to nurse my son I saw that he was dead. When I looked closely at him in the light I realized it wasn't my son.”
22 Et l'autre femme répondit: Cela n'est pas [ainsi], mais celui qui vit est mon fils, et celui qui est mort est ton fils. Mais l'autre dit: Cela n'est pas [ainsi]; mais celui qui est mort est ton fils, et celui qui vit est mon fils. Elles parlaient ainsi devant le Roi.
The other woman argued, “No! My son is the one that's alive. Your son is the one that's dead.” The first woman objected, “No! Your son is the one that's dead. My son is the one that's alive.” They went on quarrelling in front of the king.
23 Et le Roi dit: Celle-ci dit, celui-ci qui est en vie est mon fils, et celui qui est mort est ton fils; et celle-là dit, cela n'est pas [ainsi]; mais celui qui est mort est ton fils, et celui qui vit est mon fils.
The king intervened, saying, “So this woman says ‘My son is the one that's alive. Your son is the one that's dead,’ while the other woman says, ‘No! Your son is the one that's dead. My son is the one that's alive.’”
24 Alors le Roi dit: Apportez-moi une épée. Et on apporta une épée devant le Roi.
“Bring me a sword,” the king ordered. So they brought him a sword.
25 Et le Roi dit: Partagez en deux l'enfant qui vit, et donnez-en la moitié à l'une et la moitié à l'autre.
“Cut the child that's alive in two, and give half to one woman and half to another,” he commanded.
26 Alors la femme dont le fils était vivant, dit au Roi; car ses entrailles furent émues de compassion envers son fils: Hélas! mon Seigneur, qu'on donne à celle-ci l'enfant qui vit, et qu'on se garde bien de le faire mourir! Mais l'autre dit: Il ne sera ni à moi ni à toi; qu'on le partage.
But the woman whose son was alive had so much love for him as a mother that she cried out to the king, “Please, Your Majesty, give her the boy! Don't kill him!” But the other woman said, “He won't be mine or yours—cut him in two!”
27 Alors le Roi répondit, et dit: Donnez à celle-ci l'enfant qui vit, et qu'on se garde bien de le faire mourir; celle-ci est la mère.
The king gave his verdict. “Give the child that's alive to the first woman,” he ordered. “On no account kill him, for she is his real mother.”
28 Et tous ceux d'Israël ayant entendu parler du jugement que le Roi avait rendu, craignirent le Roi; car ils reconnurent qu'il y avait en lui une sagesse divine pour rendre la justice.
When everyone in Israel heard about the verdict the king had delivered, they had great respect for the king, because they recognized the wisdom God had given him to judge rightly.
