1 Alors Elie Tisbite, [l'un de ceux] qui s'étaient habitués à Galaad, dit à Achab: L'Eternel le Dieu d'Israël, en la présence duquel je me tiens, est vivant, qu'il n'y aura ces années-ci ni rosée ni pluie, sinon à ma parole.
Now Elijah the Tishbite, who was among the settlers of Gilead, said to Ahab, “As surely as the LORD lives—the God of Israel before whom I stand—there will be neither dew nor rain in these years except at my word!”
2 Puis la parole de l'Eternel fut adressée à Elie, en disant:
Then a revelation from the LORD came to Elijah:
3 Va-t'en d'ici, et tourne-toi vers l'Orient, et te cache au torrent de Kérith, qui est vis-à-vis du Jourdain.
“Leave here, turn eastward, and hide yourself by the Brook of Cherith, east of the Jordan.
4 Tu boiras du torrent, et j'ai commandé aux corbeaux de t'y nourrir.
And you are to drink from the brook, and I have commanded the ravens to feed you there.”
5 Il partit donc, et fit selon la parole de l'Eternel; il s'en alla, dis-je, et demeura au torrent de Kérith, vis-à-vis du Jourdain.
So Elijah did what the LORD had told him, and he went and lived by the Brook of Cherith, east of the Jordan.
6 Et les corbeaux lui apportaient du pain et de la chair le matin, et du pain et de la chair le soir, et il buvait du torrent.
The ravens would bring him bread and meat in the morning and evening, and he would drink from the brook.
7 Mais il arriva qu'au bout de quelques jours le torrent tarit; parce qu'il n'y avait point eu de pluie au pays.
Some time later, however, the brook dried up because there had been no rain in the land.
8 Alors la parole de l'Eternel lui fut adressée, en disant:
Then the word of the LORD came to Elijah:
9 Lève-toi, [et] t'en va à Sarepta, qui est près de Sidon, et demeure-là. Voici, j'ai commandé là à une femme veuve de t'y nourrir.
“Get up and go to Zarephath of Sidon, and stay there. Behold, I have commanded a widow there to provide for you.”
10 Il se leva donc, et s'en alla à Sarepta; et comme il fut arrivé à la porte de la ville, voilà, une femme veuve était là, qui amassait du bois; et il l'appela, et lui dit: Je te prie, apporte-moi un peu d'eau dans un vaisseau, et que je boive.
So Elijah got up and went to Zarephath. When he arrived at the city gate, there was a widow gathering sticks. Elijah called to her and said, “Please bring me a little water in a cup, so that I may drink.”
11 Elle s'en alla pour en prendre; et il la rappela, et lui dit: Je te prie, prends en ta main une bouchée de pain pour moi.
And as she was going to get it, he called to her and said, “Please bring me a piece of bread.”
12 Mais elle répondit: L'Eternel ton Dieu est vivant, que je n'ai aucun gâteau; je n'ai que pleine ma main de farine dans une cruche, et un peu d'huile dans une fiole, et voici j'amasse deux bûches, puis je m'en irai, et je l'apprêterai pour moi et pour mon fils, et nous le mangerons; et après cela nous mourrons.
But she replied, “As surely as the LORD your God lives, I have no bread—only a handful of flour in a jar and a little oil in a jug. Look, I am gathering a couple of sticks to take home and prepare a meal for myself and my son, so that we may eat it and die.”
13 Et Elie lui dit: Ne crains point; va, fais comme tu dis; mais fais m'en premièrement un petit gâteau, et apporte-le-moi, et puis tu en feras pour toi et pour ton fils.
“Do not be afraid,” Elijah said to her. “Go and do as you have said. But first make me a small cake of bread from what you have, and bring it out to me. Afterward, make some for yourself and your son,
14 Car ainsi a dit l'Eternel le Dieu d'Israël: La farine qui est dans la cruche, ne défaudra point, et l'huile qui est dans la fiole ne défaudra point, jusqu'à ce que l'Eternel donne de la pluie sur la terre.
for this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘The jar of flour will not be exhausted and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the LORD sends rain upon the face of the earth.’”
15 Elle s'en alla donc, et fit selon la parole d'Elie; et elle mangea, lui, et la famille de cette femme durant plusieurs jours.
So she went and did according to the word of Elijah, and there was food every day for Elijah and the woman and her household.
16 La farine de la cruche ne manqua point, et l'huile de la fiole ne tarit point, selon la parole que l'Eternel avait proférée par le moyen d'Elie.
The jar of flour was not exhausted and the jug of oil did not run dry, according to the word that the LORD had spoken through Elijah.
17 Après ces choses il arriva que le fils de la femme, maîtresse de la maison, devint malade; et la maladie fut si forte, qu'il expira.
Later, the son of the woman who owned the house became ill, and his sickness grew worse and worse, until no breath remained in him.
18 Et elle dit à Elie: Qu'y a-t-il entre moi et toi, homme de Dieu? Es-tu venu chez moi pour rappeler en mémoire mon iniquité, et pour faire mourir mon fils?
“O man of God,” said the woman to Elijah, “what have you done to me? Have you come to remind me of my iniquity and cause the death of my son?”
19 Et il lui dit: Donne-moi ton fils; et il le prit du sein de cette femme, et le porta dans la chambre haute où il demeurait, et le coucha sur son lit.
But Elijah said to her, “Give me your son.” So he took him from her arms, carried him to the upper room where he was staying, and laid him on his own bed.
20 Puis il cria à l'Eternel, et dit: Eternel mon Dieu! as-tu donc tellement affligé cette veuve avec laquelle je demeure, que tu lui aies fait mourir son fils?
Then he cried out to the LORD, “O LORD my God, have You also brought tragedy on this widow who has opened her home to me, by causing her son to die?”
21 Et il s'étendit tout de son long sur l'enfant par trois fois, et cria à l'Eternel, et dit: Eternel mon Dieu! je te prie que l'âme de cet enfant r'entre dans lui.
Then he stretched himself out over the child three times and cried out to the LORD, “O LORD my God, please let this boy’s life return to him!”
22 Et l'Eternel exauça la voix d'Elie, et l'âme de l'enfant r'entra dans lui, et il recouvra la vie.
And the LORD listened to the voice of Elijah, and the child’s life returned to him, and he lived.
23 Et Elie prit l'enfant, et le fit descendre de la chambre haute dans la maison, et le donna à sa mère, en lui disant: Regarde, ton fils vit.
Then Elijah took the child, brought him down from the upper room into the house, and gave him to his mother. “Look, your son is alive,” Elijah declared.
24 Et la femme dit à Elie: Je connais maintenant, que tu es un homme de Dieu, et que la parole de l'Eternel, qui est dans ta bouche, est la vérité.
Then the woman said to Elijah, “Now I know that you are a man of God and that the word of the LORD from your mouth is truth.”
