Psaumes 8

1 Au chef des chantres. Sur la guitthith. Psaume de David. Éternel, notre Seigneur! Que ton nom est magnifique sur toute la terre! Ta majesté s’élève au-dessus des cieux.

“To the chief musician upon Gittith, a psalm of David.” O Eternal One our Lord, how excellent is thy name on all the earth! thou who hast set thy majesty above the heavens.

2 Par la bouche des enfants et de ceux qui sont à la mamelle Tu as fondé ta gloire, pour confondre tes adversaires, Pour imposer silence à l’ennemi et au vindicatif.

Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou founded [thy] might, because of thy opponents, that thou mightest bring to silence the enemy and him that seeketh vengeance.

3 Quand je contemple les cieux, ouvrage de tes mains, La lune et les étoiles que tu as créées:

When I behold thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast established: —

4 Qu’est-ce que l’homme, pour que tu te souviennes de lui? Et le fils de l’homme, pour que tu prennes garde à lui?

What is the mortal, that thou rememberest him? and the son of man, that thou thinkest of him:

5 Tu l’as fait de peu inférieur à Dieu, Et tu l’as couronné de gloire et de magnificence.

Yet thou hast made him but a little less than angels, and hast crowned him with honor and glory.

6 Tu lui as donné la domination sur les œuvres de tes mains, Tu as tout mis sous ses pieds,

Thou hast given him dominion over the works of thy hands; every thing hast thou placed beneath his feet:

7 Les brebis comme les bœufs, Et les animaux des champs,

Flocks and herds altogether, and also the beasts of the field;

8 Les oiseaux du ciel et les poissons de la mer, Tout ce qui parcourt les sentiers des mers.

The birds of heaven, and the fishes of the sea, whatsoever passeth through the paths of the seas.

9 Éternel, notre Seigneur! Que ton nom est magnifique sur toute la terre!

O Eternal One our Lord, how excellent is thy name on all the earth!
