Proverbes 4
1 Écoutez, mes fils, l’instruction d’un père, Et soyez attentifs, pour connaître la sagesse;
Hear, ye sons, the instruction of a father, And give attention to know understanding.
2 Car je vous donne de bons conseils: Ne rejetez pas mon enseignement.
For good learning I have given to you, My law forsake not.
3 J’étais un fils pour mon père, Un fils tendre et unique auprès de ma mère.
For, a son I have been to my father — tender, And an only one before my mother.
4 Il m’instruisait alors, et il me disait: Que ton cœur retienne mes paroles; Observe mes préceptes, et tu vivras.
And he directeth me, and he saith to me: 'Let thy heart retain my words, Keep my commands, and live.
5 Acquiers la sagesse, acquiers l’intelligence; N’oublie pas les paroles de ma bouche, et ne t’en détourne pas.
Get wisdom, get understanding, Do not forget, nor turn away From the sayings of my mouth.
6 Ne l’abandonne pas, et elle te gardera; Aime-la, et elle te protégera.
Forsake her not, and she doth preserve thee, Love her, and she doth keep thee.
7 Voici le commencement de la sagesse: Acquiers la sagesse, Et avec tout ce que tu possèdes acquiers l’intelligence.
The first thing [is] wisdom — get wisdom, And with all thy getting get understanding.
8 Exalte-la, et elle t’élèvera; Elle fera ta gloire, si tu l’embrasses;
Exalt her, and she doth lift thee up, She honoureth thee, when thou dost embrace her.
9 Elle mettra sur ta tête une couronne de grâce, Elle t’ornera d’un magnifique diadème.
She giveth to thy head a wreath of grace, A crown of beauty she doth give thee freely.
10 Écoute, mon fils, et reçois mes paroles; Et les années de ta vie se multiplieront.
Hear, my son, and receive my sayings, And years of life [are] multiplied to thee.
11 Je te montre la voie de la sagesse, Je te conduis dans les sentiers de la droiture.
In a way of wisdom I have directed thee, I have caused thee to tread in paths of uprightness.
12 Si tu marches, ton pas ne sera point gêné; Et si tu cours, tu ne chancelleras point.
In thy walking thy step is not straitened, And if thou runnest, thou stumblest not.
13 Retiens l’instruction, ne t’en dessaisis pas; Garde-la, car elle est ta vie.
Lay hold on instruction, do not desist, Keep her, for she [is] thy life.
14 N’entre pas dans le sentier des méchants, Et ne marche pas dans la voie des hommes mauvais.
Into the path of the wicked enter not, And be not happy in a way of evil doers.
15 Évite-la, n’y passe point; Détourne-t’en, et passe outre.
Avoid it, pass not over into it, Turn aside from it, and pass on.
16 Car ils ne dormiraient pas s’ils n’avaient fait le mal, Le sommeil leur serait ravi s’ils n’avaient fait tomber personne;
For they sleep not if they do not evil, And their sleep hath been taken violently away, If they cause not [some] to stumble.
17 Car c’est le pain de la méchanceté qu’ils mangent, C’est le vin de la violence qu’ils boivent.
For they have eaten bread of wickedness, And wine of violence they drink.
18 Le sentier des justes est comme la lumière resplendissante, Dont l’éclat va croissant jusqu’au milieu du jour.
And the path of the righteous [is] as a shining light, Going and brightening till the day is established,
19 La voie des méchants est comme les ténèbres; Ils n’aperçoivent pas ce qui les fera tomber.
The way of the wicked [is] as darkness, They have not known at what they stumble.
20 Mon fils, sois attentif à mes paroles, Prête l’oreille à mes discours.
My son, to my words give attention, To my sayings incline thine ear,
21 Qu’ils ne s’éloignent pas de tes yeux; Garde-les dans le fond de ton cœur;
Let them not turn aside from thine eyes, Preserve them in the midst of thy heart.
22 Car c’est la vie pour ceux qui les trouvent, C’est la santé pour tout leur corps.
For life they [are] to those finding them, And to all their flesh healing.
23 Garde ton cœur plus que toute autre chose, Car de lui viennent les sources de la vie.
Above every charge keep thy heart, For out of it [are] the outgoings of life.
24 Écarte de ta bouche la fausseté, Éloigne de tes lèvres les détours.
Turn aside from thee a froward mouth, And perverse lips put far from thee,
25 Que tes yeux regardent en face, Et que tes paupières se dirigent devant toi.
Thine eyes do look straightforward, And thine eyelids look straight before thee.
26 Considère le chemin par où tu passes, Et que toutes tes voies soient bien réglées;
Ponder thou the path of thy feet, And all thy ways [are] established.
27 N’incline ni à droite ni à gauche, Et détourne ton pied du mal.
Incline not [to] the right or to the left, Turn aside thy foot from evil!
