Proverbes 16
1 Les projets que forme le cœur dépendent de l’homme, Mais la réponse que donne la bouche vient de l’Éternel.
It is the part of man to prepare the soul: and of the Lord to govern the tongue.
2 Toutes les voies de l’homme sont pures à ses yeux; Mais celui qui pèse les esprits, c’est l’Éternel.
All the ways of a man are open to his eyes: the Lord is the weigher of spirits.
3 Recommande à l’Éternel tes œuvres, Et tes projets réussiront.
Lay open thy works to the Lord: and thy thoughts shall be directed.
4 L’Éternel a tout fait pour un but, Même le méchant pour le jour du malheur.
The Lord hath made all things for himself: the wicked also for the evil day.
5 Tout cœur hautain est en abomination à l’Éternel; Certes, il ne restera pas impuni.
Every proud man is an abomination to the Lord: though hand should be joined to hand, he is not innocent. The beginning of a good way is to do justice; and this is more acceptable with God, than to offer sacrifices.
6 Par la bonté et la fidélité on expie l’iniquité, Et par la crainte de l’Éternel on se détourne du mal.
By mercy and truth iniquity is redeemed: and by the fear of the Lord men depart from evil.
7 Quand l’Éternel approuve les voies d’un homme, Il dispose favorablement à son égard même ses ennemis.
When the ways of man shall please the Lord, he will convert even his enemies to peace.
8 Mieux vaut peu, avec la justice, Que de grands revenus, avec l’injustice.
Better is a little with justice, than great revenues with iniquity.
9 Le cœur de l’homme médite sa voie, Mais c’est l’Éternel qui dirige ses pas.
The heart of man disposeth his way: but the Lord must direct his steps.
10 Des oracles sont sur les lèvres du roi: Sa bouche ne doit pas être infidèle quand il juge.
Divination is in the lips of the king, his mouth shall not err in judgment.
11 Le poids et la balance justes sont à l’Éternel; Tous les poids du sac sont son ouvrage.
Weight and balance are judgments of the Lord: and his work all the weights of the bag.
12 Les rois ont horreur de faire le mal, Car c’est par la justice que le trône s’affermit.
They that act wickedly are abominable to the king: for the throne is established by justice.
13 Les lèvres justes gagnent la faveur des rois, Et ils aiment celui qui parle avec droiture.
Just lips are the delight of kings: he that speaketh right things shall be loved.
14 La fureur du roi est un messager de mort, Et un homme sage doit l’apaiser.
The wrath of a king is as messengers of death: and the wise man will pacify it.
15 La sérénité du visage du roi donne la vie, Et sa faveur est comme une pluie du printemps.
In the cheerfulness of the king’s countenance is life: and his clemency is like the latter rain.
16 Combien acquérir la sagesse vaut mieux que l’or! Combien acquérir l’intelligence est préférable à l’argent!
Get wisdom, because it is better than gold: and purchase prudence, for it is more precious than silver.
17 Le chemin des hommes droits, c’est d’éviter le mal; Celui qui garde son âme veille sur sa voie.
The path of the just departeth from evils: he that keepeth his soul keepeth his way.
18 L’arrogance précède la ruine, Et l’orgueil précède la chute.
Pride goeth before destruction: and the spirit is lifted up before a fall.
19 Mieux vaut être humble avec les humbles Que de partager le butin avec les orgueilleux.
It is better to be humbled with the meek, than to divide spoils with the proud.
20 Celui qui réfléchit sur les choses trouve le bonheur, Et celui qui se confie en l’Éternel est heureux.
The learned in word shall find good things: and he that trusteth in the Lord is blessed.
21 Celui qui est sage de cœur est appelé intelligent, Et la douceur des lèvres augmente le savoir.
The wise in heart shall be called prudent: and he that is sweet in words shall attain to greater things.
22 La sagesse est une source de vie pour celui qui la possède; Et le châtiment des insensés, c’est leur folie.
Knowledge is a fountain of life to him that possesseth it: the instruction of fools is foolishness.
23 Celui qui est sage de cœur manifeste la sagesse par sa bouche, Et l’accroissement de son savoir paraît sur ses lèvres.
The heart of the wise shall instruct his mouth: and shall add grace to his lips.
24 Les paroles agréables sont un rayon de miel, Douces pour l’âme et salutaires pour le corps.
Well ordered words are as a honeycomb: sweet to the soul, and health to the bones.
25 Telle voie paraît droite à un homme, Mais son issue, c’est la voie de la mort.
There is a way that seemeth to a man right: and the ends thereof lead to death.
26 Celui qui travaille, travaille pour lui, Car sa bouche l’y excite.
The soul of him that laboureth, laboureth for himself, because his mouth hath obliged him to it.
27 L’homme pervers prépare le malheur, Et il y a sur ses lèvres comme un feu ardent.
The wicked man diggeth evil, and in his lips is a burning fire.
28 L’homme pervers excite des querelles, Et le rapporteur divise les amis.
A perverse man stirreth up quarrels: and one full of words separateth princes.
29 L’homme violent séduit son prochain, Et le fait marcher dans une voie qui n’est pas bonne.
An unjust man allureth his friend: and leadeth him into a way that is not good.
30 Celui qui ferme les yeux pour se livrer à des pensées perverses, Celui qui se mord les lèvres, a déjà consommé le mal.
He that with fixed eyes deviseth wicked things, biting his lips, bringeth: evil to pass.
31 Les cheveux blancs sont une couronne d’honneur; C’est dans le chemin de la justice qu’on la trouve.
Old age is a crown of dignity, when it is found in the ways of justice.
32 Celui qui est lent à la colère vaut mieux qu’un héros, Et celui qui est maître de lui-même, que celui qui prend des villes.
The patient man is better than the valiant: and he that ruleth his spirit than he that taketh cities.
33 On jette le sort dans le pan de la robe, Mais toute décision vient de l’Éternel.
Lots are cast into the lap, but they are disposed of by the Lord.
