Nahum 1
1 Oracle sur Ninive. Livre de la prophétie de Nahum, d’Elkosch.
The oracle, on Nineveh, —the scroll of the vision of Nahum, the Elkoshite.
2 L’Éternel est un Dieu jaloux, il se venge; L’Éternel se venge, il est plein de fureur; L’Éternel se venge de ses adversaires, Il garde rancune à ses ennemis.
A GOD jealous and avenging, is Yahweh, an avenger, is Yahweh, and a lord of wrath, an avenger, is Yahweh towards his adversaries, and, a retainer [of anger], is he to his foes.
3 L’Éternel est lent à la colère, il est grand par sa force; Il ne laisse pas impuni. L’Éternel marche dans la tempête, dans le tourbillon; Les nuées sont la poussière de ses pieds.
Yahweh, is slow to anger, but great in vigour, He will not leave, unpunished, as for Yahweh, in storm-wind and in tempest, is his way, and, clouds, are the dust of his feet.
4 Il menace la mer et la dessèche, Il fait tarir tous les fleuves; Le Basan et le Carmel languissent, La fleur du Liban se flétrit.
Who rebuketh the sea and hath made it dry, and, all the streams, hath he dried up, —withered are Bashan and Carmel, Even the bloom of Lebanon, is withered:
5 Les montagnes s’ébranlent devant lui, Et les collines se fondent; La terre se soulève devant sa face, Le monde et tous ses habitants.
Mountains, have trembled because of him, and, the hills, have melted, —and the earth, hath lifted itself up, at his presence, the world also, and all who dwell therein.
6 Qui résistera devant sa fureur? Qui tiendra contre son ardente colère? Sa fureur se répand comme le feu, Et les rochers se brisent devant lui.
Before his indignation, who shall stand? And who shall abide the glow of his anger? His wrath, hath been poured forth like fire, and, the rocks, have been broken down because of him.
7 L’Éternel est bon, Il est un refuge au jour de la détresse; Il connaît ceux qui se confient en lui.
Good is Yahweh, as a protection in the day of distress, —and one who acknowledgeth them who seek refuge in him.
8 Mais avec des flots qui déborderont Il détruira la ville, Et il poursuivra ses ennemis jusque dans les ténèbres.
But, with an overflow rolling on, a full end, will he make of them who rise up against him, —and, his foes, will he pursue into darkness.
9 Que méditez-vous contre l’Éternel? C’est lui qui détruit. La détresse ne paraîtra pas deux fois.
What can ye devise against Yahweh? A full end, is he making, —Distress, shall not rise up twice:
10 Car entrelacés comme des épines, Et comme ivres de leur vin, Ils seront consumés Comme la paille sèche, entièrement.
Though they were like thorns intertwined, and as drunkards drenched with their drink, yet have they been devoured, like stubble fully dry.
11 De toi est sorti Celui qui méditait le mal contre l’Éternel, Celui qui avait de méchants desseins.
Out of thee, hath one come forth—plotting, against Yahweh, wickedness, —A counselor of the Abandoned One.
12 Ainsi parle l’Éternel: Quoique intacts et nombreux, Ils seront moissonnés et disparaîtront. Je veux t’humilier, Pour ne plus avoir à t’humilier…
Thus, saith Yahweh, Though they be in full force, and so in great numbers, yet, even so, have they been cut off, and have passed away, —If I humble thee [once], I will not humble thee again.
13 Je briserai maintenant son joug de dessus toi, Et je romprai tes liens…
Now, therefore, will I break his yoke from off thee, —and, thy fetters, will I tear off.
14 Voici ce qu’a ordonné sur toi l’Éternel: Tu n’auras plus de descendants qui portent ton nom; J’enlèverai de la maison de ton dieu les images taillées ou en fonte; Je préparerai ton sépulcre, car tu es trop léger.
Then will Yahweh give command concerning thee, None of thy name shall be sown any more, —out of the house of thy gods, will I cut off carved image and molten image, I will appoint thy grave, for thou art of little esteem.
15 Voici sur les montagnes Les pieds du messager qui annonce la paix! Célèbre tes fêtes, Juda, accomplis tes vœux! Car le méchant ne passera plus au milieu de toi, Il est entièrement exterminé…
Lo! upon the mountains, The feet of one, who bringeth Good Tidings! who publisheth Prosperity! Celebrate, O Judah, thy pilgrim festivals, fulfil thy vows, for, not again, any more, shall the Abandoned One, pass through thee, he hath been wholly cut off.
